Abcs chief medical editor dr. Jennifer ashton sorts it out with our friend diane macedo. How effective are these twoweek isolations in stopping the spread of coronavirus . When you talk about distancing measures, they can be effective in flattening the curve, that means slowing the spread, protecting other vulnerable populations like those people who may have contact with lets say the elderly. And it buys us time. So how much of a help this will be is tbd, to be determined, because time is a factor. I want to get to some of our viewer questions. If im in a situation where i cant wash my hands right away, is Hand Sanitizer the best option until i can get to a bathroom . So many claim Hand Sanitizer really doesnt do anything. Right, and thats incorrect. It is true that if you can get to a sink, soap and water is preferable. But i think people are overthinking this. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, dry your hands. If thats not possible, use an alcoholbased Hand Sanitizer. Keep your hands clean. It will be interesting to see what happens to our other circulating infections like influenza. What precautions should i be taking at home, what vitamins should i be taking, if i should be taking my vitamins, should i be stocking up on food and water . First question with vitamins, theres no evidence that vitamins protect us from any virus. But things we can do to keep our immune system functioning at its optimum level, getting enough sleep. Getting regular exercise. That has been associated with a lower risk of getting the common cold virus, for example. And eating well actually can help. Just keep our immune system where it should be. The second question, what should you be stocking up on . The same things that you would be getting if there were a major blizzard or storm coming. So think about what you use on a daily basis. But hoarding, not necessary. Enough for roughly two weeks . Thats what the cdc is recommending. Are we safe to eat in restaurants or pick up fast food from starbucks . What risk are we at with doing this . I think we really have to put this into perspective. We cant live our lives in a plastic bubble. You have to evaluate certain behaviors and say, if i alter this, what kind of risk is involved and what kind of benefit . Incubation period, we see a lot about what happens prior to getting coronavirus, but nothing about when someone stops being contagious after they get it. With a cold or flu, its usually 24 hours after the fever is gone. What is it with coronavirus . We dont know. This virus is not even three months old so we dont know the transmission dynamics. One of those things is how long someone can be infectious after testing positive. We just had a small study we reported on just this morning that suggested the average incubation period is just over five days, with 97 of people who are infected showing symptoms by two weeks. Certainly by 11 days. So were still learning that, but five days is on average. Again, remember, not everyone will show symptoms. Thanks to dr. Jen and our friend diane. Doctors are still researching this, still trying to understand the full scope of the symptoms. My biggest takeaways, dont overthink this, dont live your life in a plastic bubble.
