woman on b.a.r.t. >> john cowell scheduled to take the stand in his trial following emotional testimony from the family of the victim nia wilson. reporter amy hollyfield with more on this. >> reporter: he hasn't even been in the courtroom. he was kicked out during opening statements because he kept interrupting the prosecutor and has refused to return. it will be interesting to see if he will appear today on the stand and if he will answer the questions he is asked. john lee cowell's attorney says he suffers from schizophrenia and he hears voices in his head. the judge ruled he was competent to stand trial. the victim's family believes he is faking it. nia wilson's family had an emotional day in court. both sisters tearfully took the stand. one had to be helped out of the courtroom. prosecutors also showed surveillance video of wilson's ride on b.a.r.t. just before she was stabbed to death at macarthur station. >> i would never imagine that my daughter's last moments would be filmed all the way to the demise of her. that is so terrible. >> reporter: wilson was killed a year and a half ago in july of 2018. she and her sister were stabbed. her sister survived. the attack was unprovoked and random. cowell's attorney doesn't deny he stabbed them but says cowell did it while suffering delusions. the prosecution has wrapped up its case. the defense is expected to start with cowell on the stand if he decides to appear. the new hampshire primary is under way this morning. there have been a few surprises already this morning. senator amy klobuchar is leading in three small townships. michael bloomberg won for both democrats and republicans in another township though he's not on the ballot. polls have shown bernie sanders, who hails from neighboring vermont, with the lead followed by former mayor pete buttigieg. new hampshire's ballot is much easier than the iowa caucuses. results could be in as soon as tonight. reggie? >> please, we don't need any more has exceeded 1,000. and china has reported the flu like disease killed more than 100 people in just a day. >> reporter: overnight a new case of coronavirus confirmed in california. a passenger tested positive for the illness. >> they come by every few hours and take my temperature, pulse, check my lungs. >> reporter: 23 of the confirmed cases aboard this cruise ship in japan have been identified as american travelers. >> they brought us new masks. now we only wear these if we get the chance to go up on deck, and they want us to now wear these when we open the door to get our food. >> reporter: experts say the best way to control the outbreak is identify symptoms, isolate the patient, diagnosis and treat. >> there's no treatment, all i'm doing is sitting here in isolation. >> reporter: officials are taking drastic measures to ensure patients are isolated. this man even forcibly removed from his home over concerns about the virus spreading. back in the u.s. health officials are reiterating coronavirus, which is slightly more contagious than the average flu, cannot spread from person to person simply by being in the same room but they do say people should stay at least six feet away from anyone who is sick. and there is a bit of good news. a quarantine lifted for some on a military base in california. as for another group they only have two days left in their incubation period. med share and partners are helping fight coronavirus. the humanitarian aid group announced it was sending masks and gowns. they've had the supplies now for a couple months. just thank you. developing news on the coronavirus outbreak. the worldwide death toll has topped 1,000. >> almost all died in china where the outbreak started. reporting more than 100 deaths. 43,000 people infected worldwide. a person in san diego county has tested positive for coronavirus and that person had been evacuated from wuhan. there are now 13 cases in the united states. a local health emergency to help fight coronavirus. and right now there are two confirmed cases in the county. supervisors voted to declare that yesterday. they believe it will help with the financial side of battling an outbreak. >> we can spend resources as necessary and get reimbursed from the federal and state government. >> health officials say the disease has not been spread person to person. they possibility enter plays for charges in the death of a man killed when his laptop was stolen. shuo zeng died on his 34th birthday while trying to get his laptop back. oakland police say zeng was dragged by the getaway car. they believe lee took zeng's computer and byron reid drove the getaway car. wiggins also faces charges in his death. a chp officer faces several charges of sexual assault involving a girl. 34-year-old brian watkins is accused of having a sexual relationship that began when the victim was 16. police launched an investigation in july and say he continued the relationship even after he learned he was under investigation. the chp says they've put him on administrative leave. berkeley city council will consider a plan to let people camp inside their rvs. a survey found people lived in 193 rr vs and other vehicles and many feel that number has ground. the plan only includes space for 25 vehicles and critics say that doesn't go far enough. a heads-up along the peninsula. get ready to deal with some lane closures. julian? >> reporter: good morning, reggie. around this time tomorrow morning is when the first round of road work will be wrapping up. about a 22-mile stretch of highway 101 from the existing hol lanes and converting or creating new express lanes. here is a map to give you a better idea if your drive will be affected there. between san mateo county line and whipple avenue here and new express lanes will be constructed north all the way to 380 in south san francisco. when completed those express lanes will allow people to drive for free. others can pay with a fastrak varying from a couple bucks up to $10 depending on traffic and the time of day. it is being done to make sure it does not impact the morning commute when the road work
