>> twitter. >> welcome to the 2020 oscars. ♪ >> reporter: it was a night of memorable performances, including one from best actress nominee, cynthia erivo. ♪ while the clouds roll back and the stars fill the night ♪ >> reporter: the big winner of the night, "parasite" becomi the first foreign language film to take home the academy award for best picture. >> we never imagined this to ever happen. >> paying tribute to martin scorsese as he accepted his award for directing. >> the most creative. >> that came to us from our great martin scorsese so -- [ applause ] >> reporter: there were no surprises in the acting categories. brad pitt taking home the supporting actor award. >> "once upon a time in hollywood," ain't that the truth. >> reporter: laura dern with her first academy award as her supporting actress for her role in "marriage story." >> i share this award with my legend and heroes, diane ladd and bruce dern. >> reporter: renee zellweger for playing judy garland. >> miss garland, you are certainly among the heroes who unite and define us, and this is certainly for you. >> reporter: and joaquin phoenix with his first oscar for his portrayal in "joker." >> i have been a scoundrel in my life, and i have been grateful, and so many of you in this room have given me a second chance. >> reporter: those four actors, only the second slate of acting nominees, to win all five award shows in the same year. in hollywood, romina puga. back to you, kenneth and elizabeth. >> thank you. historic night, and there was some criticism of the ceremony last night concerning the in memoriam segment. >> thor or is -- the ceremony l out luke perry and cameron boyce who both died over the last year. perry even appeared in "once upon a time in hollywood." >> much more from the oscars coming up later this half hour. we explain eminem's surprise performance. plus the big fashion statements coming up. now to the breaking news overnight about the coronavirus, and a significant surge in cases. authorities in china reported more than 3,000 new cases today bringing the total to more than 40,000. the death toll is now over 900 which is more than the sars outbreak, and the number of cases on a cruise ship quarantined in japan has doubled today to more than 130, including at least 12 americans. we spoke to one of them who's hospitalized and her husband who remains on the ship. >> it doesn't even feel like a cold to be perfectly honest. i wouldn't have known that there was anything wrong with me if they hadn't tested me. the only thing that i ever experienced was a cough and a mild fever. both of which have basically resolved. >> i have been in this room for six -- six days now. so it's pretty surreal. i have another eight more days to go. >> meanwhile, a cruise ship that was quarantined in hong kong has been cleared after testing found no infections. the pentagon has identified two soldiers killed in afghanistan this weekend. javier gutierrez from texas. they were both 28 from north carolina and new mexico. they were reportedly shot by an afghan soldier after an argument. six other u.s. troops were wounded. this could jeopardize ongoing peace talks in afghanistan. we turn to the race in 2020 with the candidates stepping up their attacks on the eve of the new hampshire primary. >> senator bernie sanders is leading in the polls, but there's still a cloud of uncertainty over iowa. sanders wants officials in iowa to take another look at the caucus results. amy klobuchar says she raised $3 million since her debate performance on friday. >> abc's trevor ault joins us with the latest from manchester, new hampshire where each candidate hopes to pick up momentum. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. yeah. it might not yet be the circular firing squad that president obama had warned about, but the democratic primary race is heated and it's only getting more fiery, and with new hampshire voters now heading to the polls tomorrow, the pressure on all these candidates is mounting even higher. with now less than 24 hours before new hampshire casts its votes, democratic presidential candidates aggressively campaigning down to the final moment. mayor pete buttigieg has been surging since his strong showing in iowa. [ chanting ] he's pushing back against claims from former vice president joe biden that he's trying to brand himself as the next obama. >> well, he's right. i'm not barack obama, and neither is he. neither is anyone running for president right now, and this isn't 2008. it's 2020. >> reporter: with buttigieg siphoning some of his supporters, biden now sitting in fourth in the latest new hampshire polls. this weekend, he continued to unleash more pointed attacks on buttigieg's lack of experience. >> what has he done? who has he pulled together? does he know any of the foreign leaders? >> reporter: senator amy klobuchar riding momentum from a strong debate showing, seeing some of her largest crowds yet. >> every step of the way, we have defied expectations. >> reporter: but right now, the new hampshire front-runner is still senator bernie sanders who dominated in 2016 and is confident he can pull off a repeat. >> if we win here in new hampshire, and with your help, i think we can win, it will make it easier for us to win in nevada and in south carolina and in california. >> reporter: another candidate to watch is senator elizabeth warren hoping to break out of the middle of the pack, and while her poll numbers have been slipping, she alongside senator klobuchar and vice president biden all say no matter what happens here in new hampshire, their campaigns are built for the long haul. kenneth, elizabeth? >> thank you. we will bring you live coverage of tomorrow's primary results beginning at 8:00 p.m. eastern on our streaming channel, abc newslive. in the weather department a winter storm is racing east after slamming the midwest. a state of emergency has been declared in minneapolis, and snow as far south as georgia. meanwhile, lake tahoe, wind gusts hit 209 miles per hour. wow. let's take a look now at your forecast for this monday morning. >> good morning. a wet start to the workweek on tap for us across the northeast. rain showers to the mid atlantic, in new england coast. interior parts of new england, northern new england, that's where we're expecting 3 to 6 inches of snow across some of the highest terrain. problems for the southeast being flooding downpours as this front gets hung up. that threat continuing all the way through the middle part of this week. we're tracking wet weather across california as well with winds upwards of 90 miles per hour. i'm accuweather meteorologist adam del rosso. coming up, the debate over parallel parking and whether new drivers need to know how to do it. also ahead, the rare handwritten note from dr. martin luther king jr. going up for sale. what he said about love. but first, when we come back, two new york police officers are ambushed for 12 hours. what we're learning about the gunm we are back with a boeing 737 that crash landed on its belly at a russian airport after problems with the landing gear. it happened about 1,200 miles from moscow. all 100 people on board safely evacuated down emergency slides. the man accused of shooting two new york city police officers in a 12-hour period is facing attempted murder charges today. video shows the suspect walking into a police station in the bronx sunday and opening fire. one officer was wounded. officials say the shooting only stopped when the suspect ran out of bullets and dropped to the floor. on saturday, the same man allegedly walked up to a patrol van and shot one officer who was also expected to recover. the suspect has a long criminal record and was free on parole, but his family is struggling to understand the attacks. >> he never said anything about a vendetta against cops? >> no. he never said that. >> what do you think happened here? >> i can't understand what happened. that's what i -- that's what i'm trying to figure out. why would he go over to the precinct to do that?
