seeing any. we're tracking the fog this morning with the visibility. you can see town to nothing up in the north bay, east bay, and peninsula. it's all around the bay. a foggy look at san jose, 280 where temperatures are from the upper 40s down the to the low 40s in gilroy. santa cruz will have a cooler kay today. winds up to 15 to 20 more than a. looking at mid-50s for you here at the beach. 40, santa rosa, and throughout the afternoon it's a cooler day today. we'll talk about how much cooler and that wind you talked about, julian, in a few minutes. we start with the developing news this morning on the latest with the coronavirus. a u.s. citizen has now died of the virus in china. a u.s. embassy spokesperson telling abc 7 the 60-year-old died in wouhan. "the new york times" says the person was a woman and did have underlying health conditions. it's believed this is the first death of a u.s. citizen from the outbreak. the embassy said they are not providing additional information out of respect for the family's privacy. so far we know at least 722 people have died from the virus worldwide. the virus has infected more than 30,000 people. trapped off the coast of japan, more than 61 passengers have the virus and 11 of themselves are americans. luz pena has the latest. >> this is what quarantined at sea looked like. >> yesterday i was on a cruise ship, really happy, have employment. i can do swimming. now today i'm just in jail. >> julie choy's 15-day vacation started january 20th. five days later a man on board tested positive for the coronavirus. the latest count is 64 people testing positive, including at least 11 americans. now, the diamondba"diamond prin off the coast of japan. >> when i tried to find out who actually got sick, who is it, nobody say anything. >> even though choy is not symptom mat tick, her day begins with taking her own temperature. food is left at her door and she's only allowed to leave her cabin every three or four days for an hour and a half. >> anxious attack because the room that i'm in right now is an interior room without window. >> royal caribbean international announced that it's bands all passengers with chinese, hong kong, or macao passports. the cdc confirmed four patients who arrived at the travis air force base from china china chia symptom mattic. she and the other passengers on board are being told their quarantine will be lifted february 19th. back to you. >> luz, thank you. uc santa cruz is helping researchers worldwide examine the new strain of the coronavirus. the team at the university's genome browser is looking at the virus online. this will let scientists examine how it could be possibly manipulated or how the virus could be attacked in order to find a cure. meanwhile, a bay area nonprofit is donating a stockpile of 1.8 million medical masks to china. it is in storage in but it will be used to protect against the coronavirus. they're shipping 200,000 plastic isolation gowns. for the latest information on the symptoms of the coronavirus in all of the latest reporting, go to our website, abc7news.com. a preschool aged child in solano county has been diagnosed with measles. the public health department says the child was vaccinated but had only one dose of the vaccination. now learning the child's parents were vaccinated. so far they don't know how the child may have come down with the measles. health officials say they need to trace the child's steps so they can determine if anyone else needs to be notified that they are at risk. >> we are trying to identify any events, any locations, any gatherings where the child might have been in those days prior to the diagnosis. >> we're hearing the child was not very active while sick, but officials think the child may have spent time in parts of contra costa county. men kick in the front door in pleasant hill. but the situation takes a turn when the homeowner confronts the group. we have the story. >> when no one answered tuesday morning, four masked men returned, kicked down the door, and broke into boast boastdebbi house. >> it's very solid and it took one kick. >> boast doesn't think her family was targeted. the suspects just thought no one was home, but they were. and her husband was able to chase them out. >> i looked for a second, didn't recognize them, and then i yelled, robert! that's when my husband came running out. >> her husband grabbed one of the burglars but let him go when the driver threatened to run them down. this woman has lived on this street for 40 years. she says this has never happened but it has mobilized neighbors. >> we're thinking of doing a neighborhood watch meetings so the neighbors get involved. >> police arrested two of the burglars at the concord b.a.r.. station on unrelated charges on thursday. brose's advice, even if you don't open the door -- >> let them know somebody's home. >> because? >> so they go away. >> the suspects did make off with a purse and xbox but she's happy her family is safe. an sar a rape suspect has been arrested in orinda. this man, david martin justice, sped away from the officers yesterday when they arrived to interview him about a sexual assault in walnut creek. he led police on a chase back to the home. he barricaded himself with a shotgun to his head, and after negotiation after hours, he surrendered peacefully around 6:00 last night. he faces two charges of rape. police in richmond are looking for a person who hit a 6-year-old with their suv and just drove away. who would do something like this? it happened around 5:00 p.m. yesterday on caling ga avenue. the child was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. we want you to pay attention to the surveillance video that shows the suspect driving away in what appears to be a 1994 to 2000 green ford explore. it shou it was last seen on 23rd street. happening today, bay area students will get a chance to browse for summer jobs thanks to san francisco mayor london breed. parents, if you don't want your kids in the house all summer, this is for you. it gives a chance for kids to stay off the smartphone during summer. more than 140 employers are expected to connect families to a variety of programs, including science, art, technology, sports, music, outdoors, and so much more. today's fair runs from 11 until 2:00 at the county fair building on 9th avenue. > pg&e will continue to shut off power to prevent starting wildfires. the utility was criticized year because they went beyond areas at risk of burning. the outages are to be more targeted. pg&e says future outages would be, quote, smaller in scope and shorter in duration. strong winds are expected for parts of the bay area this weekend. that and things are blown over. >> it is unusual. we have fog in february, fire season is year round in southern california. we haven't had rain in february, so certainly an unusual day today with not only the fog to start out. it's still dense, but the fact that we're seeing that marine layer. temperatures in our east bay hills right now in the mid-40s. that fog will lift. we have a cooler day on the way. still a little bit warmer than average, but we'll talk about when and if we're going to see any rain and how windy it's going to get with that advisory coming up. >> lots to track there. next up, voice of the american people. . welcome back. now we want to get to the investigation into that deadly helicopter crash that claimed the life of kobe bryant, his daughter, and seven other people, their friends. the ntsb says the helicopter was just 100 feet from clear skies before the crash happened and could have emerged from the clouds in just 12 more seconds. abc 7 news reporter zachary quiche has the latest on the preliminary reporter from the ntsb. >> as investigators piece together what's buried in the wreckage, overnight new details released by the ntsb. officials now say there were no signs the rotors failed, adding they appeared to be operating at the time of the crash. >> i heard a helicopter go over me. it went over my head. it's thick in clouds and then i heard a pop and it immediately stopped. >> the helicopter carrying kobe bryant, his daughter, gigi, and seven others, fell from the sky in los angeles killing everyone on board. >> they'll have to dig deeper and look at other parts of the helicopter, but as of now, the airplane was functioning normally right up to impact. >> according to the report, this is a photo of that helicopter disappearing into the sunday morning fog and clouds. investigators are trying to determine whether that heavy fog played a role. the pilot radioed in to air traffic control saying he was going to climb above the bad weather. the helicopter climbs, but this image also shows the helicopter turning left. then suddenly, a quick descent into the cal be a sass hillside. >> was it because he was disoriented or was there mechanical malfunction that caused a loss of control and doomed the helicopter? >> zachary quiche, abc news, new york. getting ready for the oscars tomorrow. idina menzel and multiple elsas around the hayward. hasn't been bad at the coast, but at pier 39 in the city, it's cool. we'll wait throughout the afternoon to warp up into the fixtures. winds will kick of, it's a cooler day in san francisco, but the sun will be out by mid-morning. dense fog, cooler in the afternoon, strong, gusty winds tomorrow night for most of you lasting through monday morning. that dry pattern with us through the weekend into next week. here's a look at the cooler highs today, santa rosa, even though you're warmer than average at 65 today, much cooler than yesterday. 61 in san jose, that's two degrees above average. livermore, still a little milder than you should be. redwood city, 61. oakland, just a degree above average. in the city with the stronger winds it's going to be certainly a cooler day. here's the wind advisory. not right around the bay shore, but you can see from the north bay to east bay, even the valleys looking at winds to 40 miles an hour. 7:00 tonight right through monday morning the higher elevations, 50-mile-an-hour wind gusts. 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts through livermore into oakland and all day long. here's your sunday night into monday morning. it won't ease up until the middle of the day on monday. so certainly blustery, that dries out the atmosphere. winds today along the coast up to 30 and 40 miles an hour. 58 today in san francisco. 61 for you over in oakland. oscars could s oscars could see a passing shower tomorrow. cool, gray day there. the accuweather seven-day forecast, 50s at the coast. a blustery day. but throughout the rest of the bay it will be pleasant, not as warm. low to mid-60s. tomorrow we get the winkling all throughout the afternoon and the morning. looking at monday a repeat start to the day, less windy, very cold on tuesda issue. that's why it's a focus of our efforts to build a better bay area. in the south bay a social media post by a homeless woman is gaining plenty of attention. abc 7 news amanda dell castillo explains why. >> there's no shortage of content on the internet. a recent post is racking up comments for a homeless woman in san jose. >> my connection on reddit has helped keep me from being alienated from society. it's very easy to become that way. >> robin powers has been homeless for five years. she used reddit to share promising news posting i got a call from housing today. the county's office of support of housing called to begin the process of putting a roof over her head. >> i had a two bedroom apartment, i worked in accounting. >> now she's divorced and is suffering from a connective tissue disorder keeping her from work. she lives under the freeway. but powers isn't the only one out there. so we reached out to the office of supportive housing to learn about their process. no one was immediately available for comment, but the office shared this graphic. it details the county's system. essentially all homeless people complete a standard assessment tool, sort of like a survey. it will consider the person's need and identify the right type of housing. powers says the system is helping to build a better bay area. >> every building that has gone up, i know someone there, i know someone there, you know. so it's really happening for people that i know. it's not just a few people here and there. it's not just people in shelters. >> powers says her push started two years ago. now that process is finally picking up. >> don't know where they're going to put me, but it will be better than where i am. >> she will complete necessary verification before elementary school to teach kids a message of anti-bullying, which is always on time. they did this through basketball zoi drills to strengthen the body. the best part might have been this, kristen sze of the rat this year. it starts at 5:15 p.m. at 2nd and market streets. heads around union square before ending at kearny street. the parade is free to attend. there are some bleacher seats going for $40. it is recommended you find your spot, get in place along the route by 4:30. it's expected to last around 2 1/2 hours. it should be so much fun. it's going to be packed out there. and the weather today the warriors will be honoring the memory and legacy of kroeobe brt and his 13-year-old daughter, gianna. it's the first game for the warriors since the helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant morning's sports. >> good morning, everybody. the warriors have turned into extreme makeover basketball edition trading away five players, including d'angelo russell. they acquire andrew wiggins plus draft picks. still not sure if wiggins will make his debut tonight. when the warriors signed d'angelo russell, there were questions about how a pick-and-roll guard would fit in with golden state. injuries made it impossible to find out because steph got hurt so early. they are raising the obvious questions, why did you even sign russell in the first place? >> the vision would have been steph, klay, d'angelo and what that looks like. it's three 25-point a night guys. it's enticing. >> for most players, this league is about the right fit, you know. there are some guys that are going to fit despite the fog as we started off this morning, lisa. >> that's right, julian. in fact, a mix of clouds and some sun. the clouds have been low clouds. the marine layer. we have a weak cold front on the way that's going to mix that fog out of here. we'll return to sunshine, but breezy, west-northwest winds today, gusty along the coast. this is a 24-hour profile starting at 10:00 this morning. winds will be kicking up. 22 miles an hour, stronger at the coast. and then they ramp up overnight. it's gustiest in the upper elevations, but then the gusts will be with us all throughout the day on sunday, a lot like last sunday if you remember, lasting through monday. you can see the clouds out there from the exploratorium camera. as you look at our satellite and radar composite, there's rain in the pacific northwest. looking at a visible image, this is the weak front that is pushing through. it's a dry cold front and will allow for breezy winds out of the west-northwest, bringing the cooler temperatures today and the windy day setting up tomorrow as that low drops down to the south. even bricking a a chance of showers for oscar sunday. looking live right now, our sutro tower to 35 miles an hour potentially. the higher gusts will be in the north and east bay hills, up to 60 miles an hour. not out of the question. as we look at the wind profile throughout 7:00 tonight into tomorrow, you can see them ramping up. this is 2:00 in the morning. it's windy everywhere. you can see the colors into sunday afternoon. still gusty to 30 miles an hour. this is monday morning. by midday nond winds will dial back. so highs today cooler. san francisco, 58. 61 in fremont. temperatures just a few degrees above average. fan fest, 53 for the next couple hours. and then upper 50s with sun, breezy winds. the accuweather seven-day forecast, stronger winds tonight into tomorrow. lasting through the first half of monday. cold start on tuesday, and then we're a little bit warmer. tech computer scenes. >> it's working out great because there are young animators that i trained so it gives them an opportunity to work on a "star wars" movie and get a screen credit, so it works out. >> one of them, of them, of the his animation started because of the first "star wars." >> i saw that chess set and i sd was -- something in my head clicked, that first integration of that chess set was so remarkable that it just lingered if she decades. of course years later find out it was phil. and then much later than that i would get to do the chess set again. >> and hopefully more stop
