the conference championship and super bowl. it was a mad scramble for players and coaches to get ready. now two-weeks are standard. chris alvarez with a preview of what's to come this week. >> hi, everybody. chris alvarez here in miami for super bowl week between the 49ers and kansas city. this week was the bye week leading up to next week's game. kyle shanahan said if they had to play, he's ready. >> it's nice. if we have to play sunday, we'd be ready. any time you go through a week like this, go through a normal week and not have a game on sunday. nice to have a long plane ride and go through the whole week. we'll start over monday and tuesday where we don't have to reinvent the wheel. we know we have. we have a week of tape where we clean stuff up and take stuff out. some more stuff come to us and put stuff in. >> both teams set to arrive kansas city around 4:40 eastern time. san francisco after 7:00 here local time. one of the first things you'll notice when you get off signed autographs yesterday at the dick's sporting goods on blossom hill road. a huge crowd and people started lining up hours before sanders showed up. this is similar to what happened friday when they signed autographs. there was excitement to see one of the niners stars. >> we got our jersey signed. woo-hoo. emanuel is great. they are going win. >> great to see emmanuel sanders. he brings a lot to the table. stretches the field. he was a great acquisition. he didn't have a bye this year. it was really worth it. it's amazing to have him on the team. >> in my mind, going out to win. tonight. moving on, st. francis district attorney's office put on hold charges against the man in this video seen attacking two police officers. those officers in the video shot the man who is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries. abc 7 reporters lauren martinez has more on the d.a.'s decision about the charges. >> mr. bowoed boudin made it cl >> reporter: the district attorney's office is dropping charges against 24-year-old jamaica hampton, seen here enbody cam footage fighting with two police officers on the morning of december 7th. >> his charging decision to not charge mr. hampton for feloniously assaulting two of my members, not only caused my members and every law abiding person who comes to san francisco. >> chesa boudin said this is not what's happening. they made the decision to withdraw the complaint against hampton. boudin says it's not dropping charges. >> there's an important difference between dismissing the case and withdrawing the complaint. >> that's just lawyer talk. technically they are withdrawing the complaint. if you read between the lines, that's exactly what you're doing, dropping charges. >> he says it's not a decision one way or another whether they will be charging hampton. a decision to wait to charge hampton. >> the decision we made is frankly in the best interest of the officers. they are both being investigated right now by our internal investigation bureau into their use of the firearms in the incident. it would be improper and unfair to put them on the witness stand to testify against mr. hampton while they are being investigated for their use of force. until both investigations can be completed, we are going to withhold making a final decision about how to charge with what. >> internal investigations by the d.a.'s office are standard protocol after an officer-involved shooting. the police department has not released any kind of formal statement about this decision. chief of police bill scott did send a message to his officers indicating boudin informed him about this withdrawal. he said, quote, i want you to know we're committed to working with the d.a. to see justice is done in this case for our officers. boudin also said he called the achieved and the officers involved directly to explain his decision. in the newsroom, abc 7, lauren martinez. a woman is dead and police in san jose say they have arrested a man they suspect killed her. early yesterday morning a man called police asking officers to check on a woman in a home. he said he had not spoken to the woman for several hours. when officers arrived they found the woman dead with stab wounds. police say they later identified the caller as this man, peter rodriguez. investigators believe he's the killer. the relationship between the two is still under investigation. new developments in the search for a suspect wanted in a deadly hit-and-run in berkeley. police say they know who they are looking for and he is, quote, armed and dangerous. abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to the police about the progress and their investigation. >> we consider the suspect armed and dangerous. >> reporter: the search continues for 29-year-old vehicular manslaughter suspect alexander mcgee of oakland. >> officers attempted to arrest the suspect in a location in oakland, but he was able to elude capture. we did recover the vehicle that was used in the fatal hit-and-run. >> monday at 10:30 a berkeley police officer saw mcgee punch a woman in the head in a parked vehicle on 6th street. when the officer approached the vehicle, mcgee made a u-turn while the woman inside the vehicle screamed for help. >> police say the suspect drove the vehicle onto the sidewalk and killed a woman sleeping right here. neighbors confirm she's homeless. >> a homeless person i watched several days previously sleeping in the cold on the ground that died on the street. she lived on the streets and she died on the streets. >> candles and flowers left to remember the 58-year-old victim. this neighbor says two days prior to the hit-and-run, she planned to help the woman. >> you were saying when you saw her first, you thought i'm going to ask her to move out of the way. >> i did. i thought, why is she laying there. she should be more inland maybe in an area that's covered somewhere, and i was too late. >> mcgee has several arrests for his arrest from multiple police departments in the bay area. >> outstanding warrants from contra costa sheriff's department for felony evading and burglary. >> as for the woman inside the vehicle screaming for help, police did not give specifics about her. >> a victim of domestic violence. it could also be something else like human trafficking as well. we know this was a violent assault. >> berkeley police hopes these now released photos lead to his arrest. in berkeley, luz pena, abc 7 news. san francisco welcomed in the lunar new year. dragons, drummers and fireworks took over the streets of china town for the first day of the year of the rat. the festival celebrates the beginning of the new year on the traditional lunar calendar. mayor london breed and other city officials helped ring in the new year at portsmouth square. salvation army also hosted a meal for 500 residents of china town. i know lisa and i have been having fun looking up traits for the divot officials say a traveler from wuhan, china, epicenter of the outbreak tested positive for the pneumonia-like virus. that patient is in isolation at the hospital and in good condition. there are two other confirmed cases in the u.s., i would. the u.s. consulate on tuesday will be evacuating staff and private citizens on a charter flight from wuhan to san francisco. i notice from the embassy in beijing stated there will be a limited number of seats. those most at risk of coronavirus get priority. so far the virus has killed 56 people and infecte nearly 2,000. abc 7 news reporter dine macedo has the latest from new york. >> reporter: the potentially dead deadly coronavirus is on the rise. on friday a second case was confirmed in chicago. a patient in her 60s visited wuhan. >> she had cold-like systems, shortness of breath, fever and many times would present like a cold. >> cdc testing travelers at five u.s. airports concentrating on those returning from wuhan. >> it's also important as an opportunity to educate returning travelers about the potential risk of coronavirus. >> concern over a large scale outbreak in the u.s. is minimal. >> the thing that you need to be watching out for is sustained person-to-person transmission. >> with confirmed cases in at least 13 other countries or territories, officials in china, including president xi jinping, met on saturday to discuss how to halt the spread. chinese authorities are also canceling many lunar new year events, closing major tourist sites, even implementing a travel ban. >> convenience stores or small places anti-abortion activists marched down san francisco street saturday in this year's walk for life. many say their cause has been strengthened since president trump vowed his support. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story. ♪ >> reporter: thousands of activists sang songs and marched down market street. the walk for life marks the anniversary of roe versus wade when the u.s. supreme court legalized abortion in 1973. maria lopez brought her three kids from stockton. >> the unborn life has to be respected because it's a creation of god. >> before the march, there was a rally at the civic was peaceful. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. in three days private vehicles will be banned from a stretch of market street in san francisco. it will include the area where these cars are here on market at davis, pine and beal streets near embarcadero b.a.r.t. station. drivers will be able to cross market but not drive down it for about two miles. this will affect commuters, tourists, business people. this map shows the affected area we're talking about from roughly the foot of market to van ness. public transit, commercial vehicles and taxis but no exception for uber and lyft drivers. abc 7 news reporter kate larson explains the change and how it can be part of efforts to build a better bay area. >> wednesday morning signs everywhere all along here. >> reporter: those signs will indicate no private cars, ubers and lifts included, will be allowed postage two-mile stretch of market street. the director of san francisco wub works. >> this transformation is really going to make it easier for people who walk up and down market street or people who ride bicycles or people who use public transportation. >> what about people who ride and drive cars? >> people who ride and drive cars has been the problem. >> bridget phillips who lived in san francisco all her life feels like the closure is the problem, not people like herself who drive. >> it doesn't make getting around san francisco even crazier than it is now. are they going to close more streets off? >> however, people who already use public transportation don't see the new road rules as overly restrictive. >> i use public transportation. i don't think it's a terrible thing. there's plenty of side streets. people can walk or take a lyft if they need to get there. >> what's the impetus for the closure? >> market street is out of whack with how it's used and how we want it to be used. >> the san francisco supervisor, most of the car closure area runs through his district according to sfmta, market street is home to half of the intersections with pedestrian and bicycle collisions. >> safety is a huge motivating factor here. but also the potential and power of having, you know, a shower activity and now sinking south and east. from half moon bay, a little shower activity from san mateo, 92 going over the bay there and around pescadero could get wet this morning. otherwise we're looking at snow levels really high. about 7,000 feet. temperatures near 40 degrees here. so some rain pushing into the mountains. it is in the 50s, 56 in san jose, 54 in napa. a live look here at sfo where there are some delays being reported. you can see the wet tarmac. rain is ending about now. see a few isolated showers through 10:00 and partly cloudy this afternoon. it will be dry for the week ahead. one opportunity for rain in the north bay, visibility over a mile here, half moon bay three miles to san carlos airport. the rest of you doing okay. so this level 1 system is pushing out of here. by about 10:00, we will be seeing some partly cloudy skies, or sooner, and looking at a pretty good afternoon. breezy winds on the coast. hour by hour, notice lingering showers here through 9:00, stopping at 10:00. we're beginning to see a little more sun in the north bay pushing across east by by 5:00. it's a pretty nice afternoon and high temperatures from the mid-50s at the coast with northwesterly winds to about 60 in san rafael, fremont and palo alto. low 60s, a bit above average for you in the south bay. with that wet pavement, we'll still have a little fog. looking at that patchy fog certainly for tonight. numbers in the low 40s in the north bay. elsewhere mid-40s, it's a dry night tonight. a dry start to your monday. then as we look at the week ahead, you'll notice the level one system is the only panel where we have rain over the next seven days. the next opportunity, though, there is one but not for many of you. we'll start with monday with sunny skies turning partly clear, 60s around the bay. here is the next chance of rain, late monday into tuesday. a weak system riding north of the bay area so maybe up in petaluma, sebastopol. otherwise dry, a mix of clouds throughout the week. low- to mid-60s around the bay and everyone warm up and we'll look at numbers near 70 by the end of the week. so this is about it. it turned out to be a pretty decent system. a quarter inch to about almost a half inch in the north bay. otherwise we're just looking at the rain, couple hundreds in the south bay. we need more but this is all we have. >> a
