will be effective warming us up. by 4:00, temperatures above average for this time of year again for another day. topping out in the upper 50s to mid 60s. weather looking great. how is traffic? >> looking great as well. looking at this overall map, you can see the green across the board. green is good. so no major delays that we're seeing. live look right now at the bay bridge. smooth ride morning. and it's really just looking good pretty much everywhere right now. >> thanks. new this morning, crews are mopping up and making repairs after a water main break in this happened just before 3:30 this morning in the area of pierce road and ringwood avenue. the water department shut off water on pierce road between alpine and menlo oaks. repairs could take 24 hours. tensions between the u.s. and iran are very high this morning after a u.s. air strike killed iranian general qasem solemani. >> the order for the strike at the baghdad airport in iraq came from president trump. the pentagon argues that solemani was actively developing plans to attack american dilomats and other service members throughout the region. top officials also say he was behind recent attacks on a u.s. coalition based in iraq and the strike that killed an american contractor. defense secretary mark esper said the united states is ready for what's to come. >> enough is enough. we have all the capabilities inherent in the united states military to either respond to further attacks er to take preemptive action if additional attacks are being prepared. >> the president responded to the attack by tweeting out an image of the american flag. iran's supreme leader is warning a harsh retaliation is waiting for the u.s. anti-government protesters ae gathering now in central baghdad this morning. they have mixed reactions to the deaths of iran's top general. not only was the lead general killed but the deputy commander of an iran-backed militia in iraq was also killed. some thought it was a good thing thinking it would eliminate corrupt parties destroying iraq. others say the united states and iran should solve their problems outside of iraq. retaliation from the air strike will likely not just affect the united states but israel as well. kumasi? >> thanks. the sit-in enate is back in session today. mitch mcconnell might address the house impeachment of president trump. nancy pelosi has not yet sent the senate the two articles of impeachment. most lawmakers will not be turning to washington, d.c. until next week. developing news in the death of a man who got his laptop stolen from an oakland starbucks. we expect to learn more about the men who were arrested in that case. as people leave a memoial for the victim at the store, we are hearing from his friends and family. notes outside of a starbucks where there is a growing memorial to remember that victim who was killed on his birthday, on new year's eve when he was trying to stop three thieves from stealing his laptop at this starbucks. the entire community wrapping their arms around this man this morning. abc7 news is honoring the family's request not to identify the victim at this point in time. he was killed on new year's eve, which was actually his birthday. the laptop was stolen at this mon montclair starbucks. this morning we're hearing from the victim's cousin about why he fought those three for his laptop. his work as a software engineer was saved on it. >> i know he had a lot of research on his laptop and also he's a great photographer. he's always so caring and he's always looking after me. i just saw him last week on a trip together. >> the message from his cousin there now flying from new york to identify his body. this morning we're working to learn more about two of the suspects who have been arrested so far thanks to security cameras installed by the montclair village association, they could be making their first court appearance today. a third suspect is still out there. back here live, you can see that growing memorial outside of this starbucks here where that man died. our hearts break for his family, his parents now flying from china to identify his body. a mission to find the driver responsible for a hit and run that sent her to the hospital new year's eve. maria ortega is in a neck brace. she pulled up to a red light at winchester and williams road. that's when she said a driver rammed into the back of her car right where her two children were seated and pushed the car into the intersection. >> i feel good. it's only a little pain in my arm. a little pain here, not too much. my stomach, i'm fine. i'm fine. >> i'm surprisingly wondering how me and my sister are still walking and not having that much injuries. >> aside from a few scratches, both kids are okay. san jose police believe the person responsible turned eastbound on williams road and eith they were in a truck or suv. in san carlos, city leaders aring loe inlooking to build mo affordable housing but it may mean demolishing an apartment building that already houses tenants. >> reporter: there are plans in the works to demolish this six affordable housing units to build 25 to 30 additional units in its place. >> it's not easy at all. >> reporter: the mayor says the decision to move ahead was not easy. >> any time we have to do a housing project we have to find them housing first. >> reporter: we talked to residents of those six units off cherry street. they say they first heard of these plans through the paper. >> that's a pretty bad way to find out anything is to find out in the paper that you're targeted for a demolition or a change that's going to disrupt your life. >> reporter: rick sandoval is retired and has lived in this apartment for over ten years. he says even though there is word their landlord will find them alternate housing, he has more questions than answers. >> the issue is where is that going to be? do i move out to tracy? to the east bay? is it going to be someplace here in san carlos? i'm single and i can adjust a little bit, but, you know, there are people here that got families. >> reporter: as far as where plans stand the mayor says they're currently in escrow right now, and they're continuing negotiations with hip housing. lauren martinez, abc 7 news. time is 5:08 a.m. we are starting out this morning on a cooler note compared to yesterday. the 24-hour temperature change showing you most spots, anywhere from 2 to 7 degrees cooler. the outlier, half moon bay, along the coastline, we're 11 degrees cooler now than this time see just about one car moving on 280 at the moment. so it's really just been a clear friday start. hopefully it stays that way. highway 4 to the maze, 12 minutes. bay bridge, about 11 minutes going across. no metering lights now. san francisco to sfo, a nine-minute ride. a new state report shows police officers are more likely to stop black drivers compared to other drivers. >> the report is the first attempt in the nation to track racial profiling by police. according to the report, black people accounted for 15% of all stops in the state from the second half of 2018 to april of 2019. they only made up about 6% of the state's population. it also shows the biggest racial disparity was by san francisco police who on average were five times more likely to stop black people. oakland police are cracking down on illegal side shows this weekend. police say in the past, side show activity has led to death or serious injuries and it will not be tolerated. officers say if necessary, citations will be issued, vehicles will be towed and arrests will be made. officers will be looking for impaired drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. coming up next, 7 things to know as you start so these numbers are above average for this time of year. overnight tonight, we'll find an increase in cloud cover and some showers returning to the forecast. the storm impact scale comes back early tomorrow morning. level 1 light system with scattered showers. the best chance of that wet weather is in the north bay. if you have plans tonight, do not worry. it's dry. the rain arrives in the north bay at 2:00 in the morning. it is weak and will fall apart. by 5:00 a.m., it's just isolated showers. when you wake up tomorrow morning, you will say what rain. it's out of here. it leads to a dry day been missing since september is talking publicly for the first time. >> in this morning's "gma" first look, a dramatic twist in the search for two missing children. authorities say they strongly believe the lives of 17-year-old tilee ryan and her brother, 7-year-old joshua are in danger and their mother is refusing to help find them. >> i have absolutely no idea where they are. i can't imagine. i just hope and what i thought and prayed for and everything is that everybody is safe. >> colbie ryan, their older brother, says he has no idea if their mother knows anything about wants thought. the proof is in this video. state officials have the results of the first sierra snow survey of the season. it's good news. yesterday's test showed the snow pack measured at 97% of normal for this time of the year. it's pretty healthy. it measured about 33 inches near south lake tahoe. the survey provides a forecast of how much water california will have for the coming year. a healthy snow pack leads to a good supply of water for us in the summertime. great news out of the sierra yesterday. talking temperatures now, hour-by-hour, we're in the 30s and 40s at 7:00 a.m. heading throughout the afternoon, we'll warm up quickly. 50s and 60s already by midday. so the next three days, shaping up to be pretty nice. mild afternoon today. we top out in the upper 50s to mid 60s. early tomorrow tons of sunshine and temperatures in the mid 50s to low 60s. enjoy. >> it's another sign of the time. california's oldest weekly newspaper shutting down by the end of the month. don russell, owner of the mountain messenger, is planning on retiring. he said he's been trying for months to sell the paper but now he's giving up. the paper was established in 1853 in the sierra nevada. its major claim to fame is mark twain who wrote for the paper in the 1850s while he was hiding out from the law. in the east bay, bill's footwear and men's shop will close this sprint after nearly 60 years. it's owner, 70-year-old marty berg is retiring. he started working at the store in 1966 when he was a freshman at cal. he became part owner in 1974 and full owner in 1979. he said he's going to miss his long-time customers but he's looking forward to spending more time with his grandkids in seattle. samsung is starting the new year with a big within to celebrate. the south korean tech giant said it shipped 6.7 million 5g smartphones in 2019. samsung says sales make up more than half of the global market. the company has five different 5g phones under the galaxy series. samsung says they're planning to release more in the first quarter of 20206789 >> i've always been a fan of the puffin, now we're learning they're perhaps not as bird branned as first thought. this video shows the first evidence of tool use by a sea bird. look at that. motion activated cameras in july of 2018 caught the moment a puffin picked up a stick from the ground and used it to scratch its chest. experts guess the bird may have been trying to dislodge a tick it also makes a quite sound. a second instance of the tool use was observed by a puffin in wales. >> you're impressed. >> i am impressed. i also enjoy authorized by president trump killed a top iranian general. >> now iran's leader says revenge awaits. ines de la cuetara has reaction from both sides this morning. >> reporter: tensions between the u.s. and iran reaching a boiling point. the department of defense confirming in a statement, at the direction of the president, the u.s. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect u.s. personnel abroad by killing qasem soleimani. abc news learning soleimani was killed by a drone strike conducted by u.s. joint special operations that hit a convoy carrying soleimani as he was leaving baghdad's airport. >> mr. soleimani is not just a general. he is something -- almost a demigod within the eyes of the iranian people. he's been a hero of the iranian people for a long time. >> reporter: the pentagon argues soleimani was actively developing plans to attack american diplomats and service members throughout the region and says it was soleimani who was behind the recent attacks on u.s.-led coalition bases in iraq and the strike that recently killed an american contractor. the u.s. then retaliating by taking out 25 members of an iranian-backed militia, a move that kicked off two days of chaotic protest outside the american embassy in baghdad. defense secretary mark esper with a warning on msnbc on thursday. >> you know, enough is enough. we have all the capabilities inherent in the united states military to either respond to further attacks or to take pre-emptive action if additional attacks are being prepared. >> reporter: the president responding to the attack by tweeting out the image of an american flag but just days ago insisting he did not want to go to war. >> i want to have peace. i like peace. iran should want peace more than anybody. >> reporter: and reaction from congress has been swift and polarized. republicans are praising the president's actions while democrats warn of war and question whether the president needed congressional approval. ines de la cuetara, abc news, new york. at the live desk, the air strike may cause more violence against the u.s. according to house speaker nancy pelosi. she issued a warning saying the air strike risks provoking further dangerous escalation of violence and that america and the world cannot afford to have tensions escalate to the point of no return. she said the president carried out the strike without consulting congress. a man is fighting for his life after he was hit by a car in san francisco. the victim was taken to sf general where he underwent surgery. sanfrancisco police say a white honda driving westbound on fulton street hit a 20-year-old man at 43rd avenue just after 6:00 last night. the honda had the green light. police say the victim was walking in the crosswalk against the light and they're looking into whether he was distracted by his cell phone. police in the east bay say it was self-defense when a dublin resident fired a gun at his ex-girlfriend and another man during an attempted home invasion. the woman died. officers were called to the townhouse late wednesday night. police say the man woke up to banging on his door. when he looked out the window he saw his ex-girlfriend and opened the door. officers say then a man forced his way inside with the resident's ex. >> the male was holding a firearm. at that point, the resident had his own firearm and scared for his life and shot his way out of his residence and then called police. >> for there to be a shooting here three doors down is very alarming. this a very safe neighborhood. >> the man with the ex-girlfriend was shot once and allegedly fired his gun and is in the hospital. the resident escaped unharmed and is not facing charges. now to the north bay. authorities are investigating a deadly crash that happened near the bon air shopping center in greenbrae. sky 7 was over sir frances drake boulevard where the driver of that silver truck died. chp says they came upon the man last night. he was standing between two cars at anderson drive with a tire iron in his hand and glass at his feet. he took off in the pickup truck and officers followed. they believe he ran a red light and a white pick up t-boned his vehicle. the driver of that vehicle suffered minor injuries. palo alto police want to assure the community they are patrolling places of worship after a church was vandalized last weekend. someone spray painted angry messages on the area's oldest african-american church saturday morning. the university amz zion church of middlefield road is a christian-based church between san mateo and san jose. police believe the suspect is a white man, 35 to 45 years old with blond hair. if any crime occurs they will do their best to find the person responsible. this morning we're learning new information about crime trends in san jose. our media partner, the "mercury news" reviewed numbers from san jose police and the fbi and they say that home burglaries in the city dropped by nearly 40% between 2014 and 2018. the decrease is largely due to a tougher police response and the rise in popularity of home security cameras. commercial burglaries increased by nearly 25%. coming up, so long golden state. more people are taking a leap and moving out of california. we'll tell you where they're going instead. and genie watching over robin williams' daughter. [ dramatic music ]ing ] ahhhh! -ahhhh! elliott. you came back! look at these monster waves off the coast of santa cruz. a high surf advisory for much of the day yesterday along our coastline expired at 9:00 last night. waves were expected to reach more than 20 feet in some areas. >> today is the biggest, i think. it's big, strong, powerful waves. you have to be careful out there. >> of course surfers in pacifica took full advantage of the back-to-back swells, but powerful waves broke two pilings near the heavy small boat hoist on capitola wharf on new year's day forcing the closure through at least this weekend. the waves have really calmed down. we have a nice weekend on the way at our beaches. right now, we have fog out there working through the delta. three quarter os afts of a mile visibility in napa. we have a cooler start this morning compared to this time yesterday. sunrise at 7:25. 30s and 40s out the door. a lot of sunshine throughout the day a nice looking day. by 4:00, mostly sunny skies, mild temperatures. upper 50s to mid 60s. another above-average day later on today. now to the deadly wildfires raging across australia right now. tens of thousands have been forced to leave and mass evacuations and more than 12 million acres have been scored. the fires have killed 19 people and more than 1,400 homes have burned. the u.s. embassy is warning american tourists to get out of the fire zone. one american firefighter who is helping battle the flames says it's out of control. >> totally unprecedented. the drought conditions, the fire behavior, just the amount of fire that exists, it's -- it's not like anything i've seen before. >> these are the worst wildfire conditions to hit australia in recorded history. unfortunately it will likely get worse. strong winds, hot temperatures and dry conditions are in the forecast for this weekend. good-bye golden state. for the first time in nearly a decade, more californians have moved out of the state than moved in according to the state department of finance. in a new study by united van lines, california ranked among the top ten of the most moved from states. new jersey was first. california was seventh. building a better bay area means making this a place where people want to stay. high housing costs, crime, traffic, those are factors we can't ignore. forbes reports that boise, idaho is the fastest growing metro area in the u.s. with 7% job growth. united van lines released a study showing there's an increase of 67% of people moving to that state. one woman we spoke with grew up in southern california and moved to boise for a job and she says idaho has a lot to offer. >> the way of life is so much easier. you can do daily tasks way easier. you can go to the grocery store, drive, park, pick up your stuff and head back home. you don't have to worry about the traffic. >> so those who moved to idaho say the cost of living and gas prices are so much more affordable than here in california. she has very valid points, reggie. >> points were made. >> points were made. you know what?
