[ applause ] >> it is so exciting to be here. it's great to see the whole gang in person and it is nice to have a little bit of an escape from wild washington. although with this weather i'm just happy i made it at all and the holiday weekend is going to last a little bit longer for some students who are waking up to school closings and delays here on the east coast as that nor'easter strengthens. >> the storm already creating a mess as millions of folks still trying to get home from the holiday, and take a look at this. this was at the giants/packers game in new jersey sunday. they actually -- well, they had to shovel the field at times to try to play that game. well, that didn't help the giants at all whether you could see the field or not, but that's how nasty the snow and weather was. >> and more snow is on the way. stephanie ramos is going to start us off in albany, new york, where the snow is coming down right now, stephanie. how are you? >> reporter: it is, george, and we'll likely see about 20 inches here in albany. that's including snowfall from yesterday, some of it piled up right here and what we're expecting later today, governor cuomo has placed the national guard on standby as this winter storm moves through the state leaving behind a mess across the country. this morning, extreme blizzards barreling through the midwest and heavy snow in the northeast. as travelers head home after the holiday weekend conditions starting out icy in upstate new york. cars seen on the side of the interstate after skidding off the road. state police and emergency crews attempting to assist stranded drivers. in albany, a total whiteout. vehicles struggling to maneuver through more than a foot of snow. drivers abandoning their cars including semis altogether. neighborhoods left completely buried as plow trucks brave the treacherous conditions. the new england region also preparing for a similar predicament. massachusetts deploying an army of salt trucks as residents hit the grocery stores to stock up on supplies. at the nation's airports, chaos as more than 500 flights canceled sunday. this plane stuck in the grass after sliding off a taxiway in buffalo. and in connecticut, frustration mounting as delays and cancellations ensued at bradley airport. ramps and runways blanketed in inches of snow while passengers are left stranded trying to book new flights home. this dad and his 4-year-old spent more than 15 hours at o'hare international airport in chicago after multiple flights to minnesota were grounded. >> when you're traveling with a kid for the first time be prepared for anything and just pretend like everything is fine and the kids will believe it too so it's been not fun. >> reporter: here in albany, it is snowing lightly right now, but it's expected to pick up later today. just to put this all into perspective for you, here in albany typically gets about 13 inches of snow for the spire month of december. they will likely surpass that snow total today. so many neighborhoods completely buried right now. you can see piles of snow piled up on street corners. cars like those behind me are covered in snow. police are advising drivers to stay off the roads if they can. new york city police say they have responded to about 550 storm-related crashes over the last day or so. the state department of transportation says, if you can stay home, go ahead and do that. guys? >> stephanie, thank you. now get inside and warm up. >> a lot of people trying to make their way home after the holiday. some getting an extended holiday. the whole team is tracking this for us. good morning to you, rob. >> good morning, t.j. we had to beat this. it's a slow-moving system, and growing in size. it started off with sleet and freezing rain and snow, and now it's going to be all freezing snow. we have warnings posted up to the spine of the appalachians and really the core of it is across parts of the northeast. let's zoom into that. it has been all snow all the time for parts of central and eastern new york. if you go an hour north of city, it's a mess. it's been all snow. winter storm warnings still posted there. 6 to 12 inches additionally. syracuse, you get over towards albany, across the border, to massachusetts, where they'll see significant amounts of snow, and 1 to 3 in new york city, philadelphia. up through boston could see another 5 to 6 inches of snow. 6:30 tonight, after the afternoon rush, all snow, i-95, and tomorrow morning all snow in boston. this is a long duration event here for the first week of december, george. >> okay, rob, thanks very much. we'll go to washington now where the impeachment showdown enters a new phase. as president trump heads to london, house intelligence committee members will have a look at adam schiff's report that makes the case for impeachment. on tuesday, they will vote to send it to the house judiciary committee which will hold its first impeachment hearings wednesday. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega is tracking the latest. cecilia, overnight, we learned that the president's lawyers have decided not to participate at least for now, in those judiciary committee hearings. >> reporter: yeah, exactly, george, good morning to you. it came in the form of a letter to jerry nadler blasting him and this next phase and say that the president's not going to participate because they have no idea who the witnesses are that are going to be called and they say an invitation to participate in an academic discussion gives the president no semblance of fairness in all of this process. now we heard from some democrats this weekend. they are suggesting that if the president is innocent, he should want to participate and they want to hear his explanation for all of this. it was just a few weeks ago, you'll remember, george, that the president himself suggested that he actually might want to participate in this. at least for now it seems like that is not happening and the white house is going to continue with this defense of stonewalling this investigation. >> none of the president's top aides have testified. meantime, though, they are at least leaving open, the white house lawyers, leaving open the possibility of participating later in the process. >> reporter: yeah, and they're asking nadler for some details on his plans for upcoming proceedings. they want to know if he'll allow more witnesses to testify. they want to know if he could call witnesses and if they'll be able to cross-examine some of these witnesses. george, we are though seeing some semblance of cracks in the ranks among republicans, at least a few are discussing whether the president should or should not participate. there's some difference and division on that. some suggest that the president might want to participate and especially if he can present evidence but others are saying he should stay out of this. this has not been a fair process from the start. >> in the meantime, cecilia, the president is flying to london this morning for that nato summit and those meetings have been very fractious meetings under president trump. >> reporter: oh, certainly so, george, and you know this because president trump has suggested that nato should be obsolete. this comes at a time when the u.s. is reducing its contbutions to nato's budget. but he's got a number of meetings scheduled with world leaders, of course, all this happening in the midst of the british elections, those are happening in a few days. the brits want him to stay out of their domestic policies. we shall see. >> cecilia vega, thanks very much. mary? should be a busy week in washington. now, of course, to the race of 2020. another candidate dropping out. steve bullock joins the 12 others but the field still remains very crowded. 16 are still in the race and now the top contenders are barnstorming across iowa with just a few weeks left before the first big test there. our eva pilgrim is there and, eva, joe biden is hoping to get a boost with a new bus tour with an unusual but very classic biden name. >> reporter: that's right. mary. joe biden's launching his biggest push yet here in iowa with this right here, this bus. the "no malarkey" bus tour. he says he came here because he knows he has to show up in order to earn votes, and that's what we're seeing from a lot of candidates here as they try to get face time with voters. this morning, the battle for iowa. with just nine weeks until the iowa caucuses, the democratic candidates out in full force. former vice president joe biden and senator elizabeth warren have been leading in iowa, but the latest polling in the hawkeye state shows the competition heating up. the most recent "des moines register" poll putting mayor pete buttigieg on top. >> andrew yang. >> bernie sanders. >> joe biden. >> reporter: this, as voters are being bombarded with the candidates' pitches. over 5,000 ads airing just this week including this buttigieg ad about limiting tuition-free college. >> we should move to make college affordable for everybody. that's some voices saying, well, that doesn't count unless you go even further unless it's free for the kids of millionaires. i only want to make promises that we can keep. >> reporter: alexandria ocasio-cortez, a bernie sanders supporter, slamming the front-runner tweeting, this is a gop talking point used to dismantle public systems and it's sad to see a dem candidate adopt it. meanwhile, biden kicking off an 8-day, 18-county, 800-mile road trip across the state. the "no malarkey" bus tour making stops in many rural communities. >> we're going to win this race. we're going to beat donald trump and i promise you we're going to change america. >> reporter: and warren trying a new campaign tactic at a town hall, she took questions from the crowd after speaking for just eight minutes. >> i was wondering if there was ever a time in your life where somebody you really looked up to maybe didn't accept you as much. >> reporter: leading to this emotional moment with a young voter. >> you got to take care of yourself first and do this. give me a hug. [ applause ] >> reporter: this morning, some of those candidates are feeling the pressure with less than two weeks to qualify. just six of those 16 candidates in that crowded field of democratic hopefuls have made the cut for the next debate. mary. >> eva, thank you. it is going to be quite the sprint over these next few weeks. t.j. all right, mary. we're going to turn to this urgent investigation under way in new orleans after a mass shooting in the city's french quarter. gunfire erupted there on sunday injuring at least ten people. abc's victor oquendo is on scene for us. victor, hello to you. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. it all happened along this sidewalk here behind us. canal street was packed at the time. police are investigating. they're looking at surveillance from the area but this morning, no arrests and no motive. this morning, new orleans police on the hunt for the people behind the mass shooting just outside the famed french quarter over the holiday weekend. >> we got a total [ inaudible ] at charters and canal. we're going to need ems here as well. >> reporter: two transported to the hospital in critical condition. one shot in the chest. the other in the torso. tens of thousands of college football fans in town for the bayou classic between grambling and southern universities. additional officers on duty for the big game just feet away when they heard the first shots on canal street. >> we were right there when it occurred. they heard the shots. again, they were under the impression that may have been fired upon because the shots were so close. >> reporter: officers swarming the scene but amid the chaos with so many people out hours after the game, authorities say it was initially tough to tell where the shots were coming from. one person of interest taken into custody near the scene interrogated by police. the mayor of new orleans calling the shootings an ugly disruption of an otherwise beautiful holiday weekend adding that the tragedy will not define us. three years ago to the date an almost identical scene on bourbon street after the bayou classic. ten people shot the sunday after thanksgiving in 2016. that shooting in 2016 happened just a few blocks away. as for this weekend, police are urging the public to come forward. offering a reward for information. george. >> they got to the bottom of this one. thanks very much. we're going to go overseas now to a brutal crackdown in iran. hundreds have been killed by government forces confronts mass protest after a sudden spike in fuel prices. it's the deadliest political unrest there since the revolution in 1979, and our foreign correspondent james longman has the latest details. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. these protests broke out after an at least 50% increase in gas prices. after a crackdown, they morphed into a wider call to bring down the iranian government. information is patchy because of internet blackout initiated by the government but over the last two weeks local journalists say at least 180 people have been killed, 2,000 wounded and 7,000 detained. now, all is this is linked to u.s. sanctions on oil exports which are clearly taking their toll. that was a move by donald trump to force iran back to the negotiating table over its nuclear program. it's putting real pressure on the government and the ruling clerics especially since these protests are concentrated in poorer areas normally loyal to the regime. huge protests back in 2019 gained worldwide attention but the current demonstrations look to be more widespread. they have already left more people dead. this represents a major challenge to the government's power and authority. mary? storm in the northeast strengthening leaving hundreds of flight cancellations and delays on the heels of that record holiday travel weekend. also this morning, as president trump heads to london, for the nato summit, the impeachment showdown entering a new phase. the first look at adam schiff's report making the case for impeachment. it goes to the judiciary committee wednesday. pat sajak on the road to recovery. the "wheel of fortune" host appeared in public for the first time since his emergency surgery a few weeks ago, the washington capitals hockey game enjoying it with his daughter maggie. >> so great to see him doing so well. and now to a terrifying vacation incident. a mother says her 10-year-old daughter was attacked by dolphins while swimming in a pen that was supposed to be safe. paula faris is here with that story. >> good morning to you, mary. good morning, everyone. this little girl was swimming with dolphin, it was a vacation excursion when her mother claims the dolphins tried dragging the 10-year-old underwater. the mother says she thought her daughter was going to die. this morning, a family is still in shock after they say their dream vacation in paradise turned into a real-life nightmare claiming 10-year-old lexi yeo was attacked by dolphins. her mother tells "the sun" it was terrifying. i thought she was going to die. saying she watched in horror as her daughter began screaming as the couple of dolphins tried dragging her child underwater and she claims the mammals ignored their pleas to stop the attack. in these photos you can see puncture wounds, cuts and gashes the family say were a result of the attack. the brave 10-year-old managed to escape further harm by clinging to the top of her body board until one of the trainers finally managed to pull her to safety. according to "the sun," the dolphin discovery experience in cancun blamed poor sea conditions causing the dolphins to become distressed pointing a finger at a male dolphin that shouldn't have been in the pen creating a frenzy among the other dolphins. >> those dolphins can get frisky. the sexual drive in dolphins is powerful and when those hormones take over they can become unpredictable and dangerous. >> reporter: the incident occurring in october but mom laura says tour operator tui has washed their hands of us and i've not even have a card, flowers or teddy bear from tui. while reports of dolphins attacking humans is extremely rare, experts do warn people to be cautious around these friendly-looking creatures. >> they are not tame animals. they are not pet animals. there's that old saying again you can take an animal out of the wild. you cannot take the wild out of the animal. >> and the tour operator tui tells abc news they are conducting an internal investigation and reaching out to the family as well and reassuring customers this is extremely rare, which is what you heard in the piece, and it's what our animal experts told us as well. keep in mind, the animal experts say dolphins can weigh up to 500 pounds, boast 100 teeth. if they really want to hurt this girl they could have. i can't imagine being that mother feeling so helpless loughlin's daughter olivia jade is breaking her silence posting her first youtube video since her parents were arrested back in march. linsey davis here with the details. good morning, linsey. >> good morning, olivia jade is back. she describes being terrified at making a return to youtube after a nearly nine-month absence from posting her tutorials. as for the big elephant in the room she addresses it only by saying she can't talk about it. >> hi, everybody, it's olivia jade. welcome back to my youtube channel. >> reporter: this morning olivia jade giannulli, the daughter of lori loughlin anfashion designer mossimo giannulli, is speaking out. appearing on her youtube channel after nearly nine months of silence. >> obviously i've been gone for a really long time and as much as i wish i could talk about all of this, it's really hard for me to say this just because i know that it's something that needs to be addressed. >> reporter: in the two-minute clip entitled hi again released to her nearly 2 million followers, the 20-year-old chooses her words carefully, not addressing those bombshell federal charges leveled on her parents earlier this year. prosecutors accuse them of paying $500,000 in bribes and fees to get olivia jade and her younger sister admitted into the university of southern california posing them as fake athletic recruits. >> thank you so much for reporter: giannulli is the first student to speak on camera following the scandal. but prior to the charges she built a brand around herself posting video blogs documents her life as a child of fame and privilege. >> i don't really care about school as you guys all know. >> reporter: the 20-year-old was a prolific social media influencer, a rising mogul, the up-and-coming makeup star landing deals with tresemme and sephora. >> today i get to review and announce my highlight palette with sephora collection. >> reporter: both companies have since cut ties with her. she says that the moral of the story is that she missed her fans and is excited to start filming again. of course, olivia jade's parents are among the 35 parents indicted on charges. both have entered pleas of not guilty and face serious jail time if convicted. >> but presumably the fact olivia jade is coming out means she's unlikely to face legal jeopardy. >> the general consensus is that it would be highly unlikely without new evidence so it's possible she could be charged but not expected. >> okay. thanks very much, linsey. t.j. we turn to a rescue of someone who was trying to get down a chimney. no, not the big guy. it was actually a teenager who was locked out of her house so she decided to shimmy down the chimney to get back in. erielle reshef is here. look, if santa can get down a chimney surely a teenager can. >> it's hard to believe that we're reporting on this kind of story but that girl somehow managed to call for help from inside her family's chimney. her santa claus-style plan to get back into her house undetected going up in smoke. the rescue operation caught on camera. this morning, an arizona teen narrowly escaping danger. her rescue caught on camera. watch as phoenix firefighters pull the 17-year-old girl out of her family's chimney covered in soot from head to toe but in good spirits showing a huge smile after being stuck for more than an hour. according to a friend, she was attempting to get back into the house after they were locked out late at night. >> i don't know what we were thinking. >> reporter: but she learns quickly it's not as easy as santa claus makes it look. >> she was panicking. she was like i don't know what to do. call 911. >> reporter: the teenage girl apparently climbing to the roof hoping the chimney would connect directly to the inside of her home and she could make her way in but no such luck. firefighters eventually using a tripod to hoist her to safety. >> we don't see it very often, not in a chimney. this is definitely something that [ drum roll ] >> let's bring it down. whoa! there's robin and george and michael. they're spreading a holiday message of joy and happiness. you know what, guys, this is a great place to take a picture. come on, let's get some elves in here. all right. one, two. boom, selfie. i don't know if i did that write. tommy, billy, i will send that one to you. we want to see your selfies as well. if you come by one of these windows and hashtag it, #gmawindows. more holiday windows to reveal now to a struggle some moms may be facing called motherhood impostor syndrome. actress and comedian casey wilson coining the term in a parenting article and paula faris sat down with her to talk about it. good morning, paula. >> good morning, lara. this resonates with so many parents. we don't believe we're good enough or we feel as if we're a fraud. for casey wilson who wrote about motherhood impostor syndrome, she was forced to confront those feelings when her son suffered a host of medical issues. this morning, hollywood comedian, actress and mother of two, casey wilson, is opening up about something she calls motherhood impostor syndrome. >> you just suddenly feel like i'm doing it wrong. whatever i'm doing is wrong. >> i've heard of impostor syndrome, never heard of motherhood impostor syndrome. >> i'd like to take credit for it if it's going to be out there. >> reporter: the otherwise confident actress revealed she felt unprepared for motherhood. >> there were signs that things were kind of i felt my son was engaged with me but then sometimes would click out of engagement and he would lie on the ground frankly a lot and just stare off with his blanket and it happened a lot where he would kind of like -- we called it powering down. >> he's not acting like himself and you start blaming yourself. >> i felt like i'm working too much or i didn't cook enough vegetables or didn't eat the right stuff in utero or i didn't breast-feed enough. >> then he starts experiencing some medical issues. he breaks a leg. he has a seizure. he loses a bunch of weight. what is going through your mind then? >> then i thought there's something very wrong. he became this beyond picky eater. they call it food jagging where kids start jagging even from favorite foods where they're whittled down to two or three foods which is -- he was just eating pasta. >> reporter: after visiting a series of specialists and getting no real answers her son finally received a surprising diagnosis in january. celiac disease, an immune disorder in which gluten causes damage to the digestive system. >> i was flooded with relief in the sense of having an answer. i will never forget googling all the symptoms and seeing it's quite a list and it was like an umbrella of every single thing that we had experienced. seizures to depression to fatigue to kind of lack of engagement to tantrums to irritability to brittle bones. >> reporter: since then the family has made their home gluten free and her 4-year-old son is now prospering. >> thriving, excited. energetic, joyful. engaging, running around. >> do you still feel like you're dealing with motherhood impostor syndrome? >> it has lifted so much. >> why do you think mothers in general are so tough on themselves? >> we're expected to lean in and we're expected to be helicopter parents. it's like -- to have it all is just this kind of notion to me that it just makes me laugh. i do think it's a lot for one gal. >> how do you manage to give yourself enough grace? [ cheers and applause ] >> thank you. very excited. i'm very excited about this. >> sounds so efficient. >> i was going to call you, george, give me a good title. >> that one works. also here to share recipes from his new cookbook, "fix it with food." that's coming out tomorrow. hope you had a good thanksgiving. >> had a wonderful thanksgiving. we had -- i was telling you we had 25 people over. i cooked for 50 because that's what i do. but everybody seemed very happy. we gave everybody plenty of leftovers. the celebration continued. >> working holiday. >> i would have it no other way. i love to cook and feed people. >> we'll focus, if you're tired of cooking but still want to have something healthy a little bit after thanksgiving. >> this is a one-sheet tray meal from my new book, "fix it with food." as some people know i have suffered from autoimmune diseases for over 20 years now so i have ra and external lupus. it's okay. that's why we have the book. we'll fix it. what's really caused a lot of inflammation in my body so i -- i wanted to focus on food to reduce inflammation. this is a recipe that will helpe it's a one-tray dish so you can make it easy cleanup. we have -- butternut squash. we'll cut that in quarters. but then with the spices. >> we already did it. >> so we have cayenne, cinnamon, ginger and a little bit of smoked paprika. the cayenne and ginger and cinnamon. you whisk those together. once you whisk those together i'll put in extra virgin olive oil. a little bit of cracked black pepper and a little bit of salt. and then, george, if you want to just start brushing with -- >> on here, okay. that's what i'll do. >> yep. so now as this is getting brushed what i like to do, when you cut -- george is doing it. [ cheers and applause ] >> look, george is greek. when you're greek you are born to cook. he's got it down. >> go to a diner. >> best diner you can find. so the key to doing dishes like this on one sheet tray is making sure that things cook evenly. i have bone-in skin on chicken, so that the squash is large. >> my question, i love to cook but i actually find the one pan thing can be tricky because some things are a little undercooked. some are overcooked. how do we avoid that here? >> we look at like, you know, i cut the squash essentially as thick as the chicken thighs are and you can do that visually and then when you put it in the oven, you know they'll cook at the same time so you end up with crispy, juicy chicken and cooked butternut squash. >> this looks amazing. >> this is once we seasoned it all up which george is doing now we put in a 375-degree oven until thighs reach 165 degrees. use a thermometer. they're invaluable. one thing i learned the difference of, at home we have to clean up so liz insists -- >> that's where this help. >> liz insists you put a little bit of foil on there so we're not scrubbing pans until the wee hours of the night. it's a hard message for me to learn. >> talk about the salad. >> so this -- i like to serve this with a little power salad. this is quinoa, spinach, tart cherries, walnuts, all ingredients with great healing ability and then you just take your chicken, a little bit of squash and you have this beautiful complete meal that is going to reduce inflammation, make you feel better and most importantly always know with the cookbook it's got to taste good. >> what is in that? >> a lot of the seasonings and the cherries and thing that is we use are anti-inflammatory. ingredients that reduce inflammation which was big for me but what i had to do and i taught people how to do it in the book is finding your triggers. like for me my triggers are dairy and sugar. so i had to eliminate those from my diet. some people, it's gluten. we showed you how to do that. if it's meat we show you how to do that. it's about finding triggers and cooking food that doesn't make you inflamed for lack of better terms. >> michael symon, our chef in residence.
