Were stand at 2,100 square feet where weve been watching this aerial fire fight go on throughout the day. You can also see on the ground just beyond the pinkish fire retardant, you can see a bulldozer on the ground. For the most part theyre trying to fight this fire from the air. Its a battle thats being fought mostly from the air as the kinkade fire marched up the hills east of geyserville. Its in such rugged terrain, its mostly inaccessible from ground crews. Thats why a convoy of spotters and air tankers are cord nagt it. The fire turned out to be fueled by what we believe to be 60mileanhour winds plus or minus, and the terrain up in that area is very rugged. Reporter cal fire says the fire broke out at 9 27 wednesday night near the geysers geothermal plant. But at this point theres no indication of how the fire started. Theres still a lot of trauma from Sonoma County two years ago. Waking up today brings up a lot of bad memories. Reporter its destroyed about a dozen structures. It also forced the evacuation of about 2,000 residents, many of the same people who experienced the devastating fires from 2007. Its an emotional time. Its only been two years since a fire devastated our community. Reporter firefighters have come in to help. The goal now to get it mostly contained before the weekend. Going forward, we expect the same dry conditions, a little less wind, however, were expecting more winds coming up this weekend. Were back live here. You can see one of these huge helicopters coming in. Theyve been coming in every few minutes making water drops. Occasionally well see big tanker spotter planes. Theyre the ones dropping the pink fire retardant. This is a race against time because subset as you know has gotten earlier and earlier. Its about 20 minutes after 6 00 before the sun goes down. Just behind us, a helicopter not 15 seconds ago dropped more water on these flames. Were in the parking lot of River Rock Casino. Flames came very close. That was before evacuation orders turned the sky brown and this place into a ghost town. He and his wife debbie were with the last to leave. I cried a lot. Its scary. You feel like youre going to lose everything a few miles east, people did lose eerything. This is wine country where homed burned, and by mid afternoon, new hot spots flaired in the districts. This would be one of them. The River Rock Casino where flamesned right to the edge of the property and outlying buildings. Within an hour, an effort to keep the fire advancing from across the road. And those drops continue. We have ae picture here of that same helicopter from a few moments ago, lining up, getting ready to do another one. The drops have been going on for a couple of hours now. Crews are trying to get that work in before the wind changes, but in the last hour, the wind has grown a bit stronger. Watch it buck a little. There you see it. Great vantage point. Wayne, thank you. The wine burned up to the vineyas and fires in the alexander valley. You can see the vine silhouetted there in the flames. There are five major wineries including Robert Young Vineyards. Thats where thomas spent the day with the owners as they struggled to keep the property from burning. Eric . Reporter dan and kristen, two years ago, the fire appeared, didnt get within two miles of the Robert Young Vineyards. This one got awfully close. Lets show you. There were some losses here. Most of the vines are okay, but you can see this one burned. And look at the grapes. Look at what happened to them. These were pretty much turned to raisins by the heat. You see that grayish smoke damage right there. This is exactly what hurts if youre a raising grapes. Most of this burned. About 50 acres of if 450 acres they own up here and have owned since the 1850s. That was close. This is even a better example of what they were going through today. We were here as this storage sheds burned practically skeletonized dacal fiream up and put this fire out while we were here, although, the owners of the Robert Young Vineyards brought their own water tan and were prepared to do battle themselves they had to. What make this especially bad . They were hoping to harvest these grapes tonight. We started around 6 00 tonight, and the guys would pick with the machine all night, and at about 3 00 in norng we would have our trucks rea to go. Reporter so they have a generator going. Have power to their tasting room and to all the houses around here which means they could be in operation if they were allowed to be, but they cant be. The roads, red winery road, which is what theyre just off of is st down. Theyre not going to have any customers able to get in re they figure, until monday at the earliest. And, oh, yeah, theyll have to go through this all over again this weekend because the fire danger will be elevated once again. Cal fire investigators are looking closely at an area near a jer me Geothermal Power plant. The utility turned off the power at 9 48 last nate. Thats nearly half an hour after the fire started. Also we found this document filed by pg e saying that, quote, became aware of a transmissionlevel outage at the site at 9 27 p. M. Its reported as in the geysers. Its going to be on john kinkade road. This time lapsed video shows how quickly the fire spread over Sonoma County. Firefighters quickly identified caus lines are a possible power lines are down in the area. Reporter but take a look at another angle of the fire a about 9 20 last night. Theres something glowing in the distance. Them it fades, and there is fire. Firefighters arrived at 9 27 to already find a large fire spread over 700 acres. This animation from google earth gives you an idea of the topography of the area before the fire began and its proximit plant. Cal fire investigators are now on the scene looking for evidence in an area identified as kinkade road and the now aptly named Burned Mountain road. Close attention is being paid to those power lines. Cal pine who owns the geysers power plant provided the iteam with a state, quote, consistentour Fire Prevention protocols due to the wind conditions we had deenergized our local power line systems before the fire started. We do not believe our facilities caused the fire. There are power lines on railed by third parties across the geysers. This report also mentioned a cal fire employee informed pg e that there appeared to be some broken equipment on the same tower where that outage occurred. So earlier this morning we visited a restaurant, and they did not have power, but i texted just about 15 or 20 minutes ago with the owner. He told me the following the power returned for an hour, went down, and came back on for 20 minutes 20 minutes later, so thats good news.
