A juror overslept his alarm, missed court and ended up in jail for more than a week. Eileen from our sister station in los angeles has the story. Deandre summerville learned a lesson the hard way. The 21yearold received a summons for jury duty. His first time in a courtroom. He was chosen to serve as a juror on a civil case and told to come back the next day, 9 00 in the morning. I woke up and looked at the time. I was like, oh, shoot, its past the time. Instead of calling in to court to let them know he overslept, he went to work. Days later, he received a subpoena to go before the judge. I stay at the beginning of every trial, i talk about the importance of jury service. I just said, sir, i honestly, i overslept. And i didnt understand the seriousness of it. He asked if i had a criminal record. I said ive never been arrested. What happened next stunned him. Despite apologizing, he sentenced him to ten days in jail. His failure to appear delayed the trial by 45 minutes. He lives with his grandparents. He says he could only think of his grandfather who he helps care for by taking him to therapy. He depends on me. So i was like, you know, its hard for him. He appealed the punishment. The same judge reduced the sentence after he had served the time. His probation was lowered from one year to three months. Instead of 150 hours of community service, hell perform 30 hours. The judge also says he would consider a motion to drop the contempt of court charge in the future. Ill take it as a learning experience. Keep moving. I wish it could have got thrown out.
