million people were watching on television. >> one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. >> reporter: that moment was made possible in large part because of the men and women sitting in this room. this is the new fully-restored mission control from apollo 11, and everything is exactly as it was on that day. it took 400,000 people, working on everything from the spacecraft to computers to spacesuits. >> cap con, we're straight for team one. >> reporter: he led them through the critical moments. five decades later, he says it's time we keep going and prove what america is really capable of >> it really demonstrated the power of free and open society. it's time for americ to wake up, get moving, build the energy and passion and say what america and will america can do. >> reporter: the celebration is in full swing here at johnson space center. this place is more than just a party. we walked past active mission control, that's the place where today's scientists are working on the next generation of space travel. nasa plans to put people on the moon by 2034 and maybe they'll be able to hake it all the way to mars. >> how cool is that. space exploration was forever changed with the apollo 11 mission. the uss hornet which is docked in alameda played a critical role, not at the beginning, but at t at the end. cornell bernard joins us live. you actually talked with some of the people involved. how neat is that, too? >> reporter: i did, you know how often do you get to walk in the footsteps of astronauts? you can here at the uss hornet. the navy ship that recovered the apollo 11 astronauts back in 1969. we spoke with the original recovery crew. they say they will never forget playing a part in space history. >> that's one small step for man. one giant leap for mankind. >> reporter: 50 years ago, the entire nation stopped to watch history in the making as neil armstrong and buzz aldrin walked on the moon. >> the courage and fortitude just blows me away. >> reporter: they came on board the uss hornet. the ship picked up the astronauts after splashdown. bruce johnson, co-pilot of the helicopter that plucked the astronauts from the ocean, he says it all happened very fast. >> they splashed down at 5:20 and we had them back on board before 6:00. >> i was the flight crew surgeon. >> reporter: the first to communicate with aldrin, armstrong and collins. he needed to know if they were okay. but only hand signals would work. noise from the helicopter was too loud. >> i got a thumbs up. one, two, three, as i say, my life was complete. they were okay. >> reporter: what a relief. >> what a relief. >> reporter: on board the hornet, not everything went according to plan. >> several nights prior to that, they painted a nice, white pathway to the mqm from the helicopter. the paint wasn't drying. >> reporter: a few glitches, but somehow it all worked, despite so many odds and low technology. >> my phone right here has about 200,000 more computing power than the computers used to go to the moon and back. >> reporter: yeah, even some of the recovery crew that we talked to still wonder after all of these years, how did we do it back then. many of them battle of two features on our map. this area of high pressure over the four corners right now is slowly going to move west over the next couple days. that will supply the warmer weather in our inland spots away from the coast tomorrow. however, this area of low pressure over the pacific northwest, that's going to help to keep the coast line cool. so it won't be a widespread heat wave we are
