minutes away from your accuweather forecast. let's get over to meteorologist mike nicco. hi there, mike. >> it's a little cloudy out there as you can see on this shot from san jose. 87. partly to mostly cloudy. there is some really thick fog developing in fairfield across 86, 87, 37, 101. visibility less than an eighth of a mile from petaluma to santa rosa. a tough morning getting around. thankfully it is much drier. look at my accuweather 12-hour planner. the fog still there. we'll go partly cloudy, brighter and dry with temperatures in the mid-50s to low 60s and upper 50s to mid-60s. so no real spring warmth but at least it's dry. look what happens at 7:00. our next storm starts to move into the north bay. it's a 1 on the storm impact scale. more on that coming up. checking out the roads this morning we do have one new problem in san jose not far from the airport just before the 101 merge. sounds like we have a two to three vehicle collision and the two right lanes are blocked. emergency crews have been sent. as soon as i have more info i will pass that along. a check of one of the east bay commutes, southbound 680 north of 24 and walnut creek right around treat boulevard. a little bit of delay north of 24. that's about it so far this morning. class is back in session at a portland area high school today after a scary situation. >> a coach tackled a student who brought a gun to school, and the sick, 18-year-old angel diaz is due in court today currently being held on half a million dollars bail. this morning we're hearing from that high school football coach who tackled the student. he actually once worked for the 49ers. abc 7 news reporter anser hassan live at levi stadium. anser? >> reporter: natasha and reggie, good morning. the coach used to be an offensive analyst for the 49ers back in 2016. he's winning a lot of praise from around the country this morning. police say back on friday diaz walked into the classroom with a gun, the same classroom coach lowe just happened to be that morning. he says when he saw the gun, he immediately lunged towards diaz, trying to get the gun from him, butudentouldn' let thchays other students he did his best t k these students. coach lowe spoke exclusively with "good morning america" telling them he had to put his life on the line because he had to act. >> i ended up getting the gun from him, you know, getting the gun with my right hand and holding him off with my left hand and calling for a teacher to come grab the gun from me. i feel like i was put in that room in that very moment for a reason. to protect those kids. >> reporter: no one was injured. diaz faces several charges including possession of a loaded firearm in a public space. coach lowe says going forward he wants to do more to end gun violence on school campuses. reporting live anser hassan, abc 7 news. >> what an incredible man and story. thank you. san mateo police expected to release more information after an arrest at a shopping center t. started with reports of a man carrying a gun at hillsdale mall. several people posted on social media saying they were locked inside of the mall as officers flooded the area yesterday. the mall was searched and cleared. the suspect was later arrested about two miles away at laurel wood shopping center. pg&e's power shutoffs during the wildfire season could affect san francisco even though the city is not directly at risk for wildfires. the utility company says it will temporarily cut power to areas with high wildfireries that can includes the east bay which is prone to windy and dry conditions in the summer. "the chronicle" reports some transition lines are connected to power lines in san francisco which means a shutoff there could impact the city. earlier this month cal fire determined pg&e equipment started the campfire, the deadliest wildfire in state history. 5:05. today the city of piedmont is expected to move forward with a plan to stop underaged vaping and tobacco use. the city council will approve a $400,000 state grant to hire a school resource officer. the officer will visit middle and high schools to crack down on vaping and tobacco use as well as drug and alcohol use. the officer will create a diversion program for teens caught using tobacco products. staff at a san francisco high school are trying to plan another prom for their students after the original one got rained out. >> students were supposed to have a fun night out on a boat over the weekend, but mother nature had a different idea. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen tells us how the school is trying to make it up. >> reporter: this group of san francisco students spent the entire school year planning and fund-raising for their prom on a yacht. but mother nature clearly did not get the invite. >> once we started setting sail to san francisco, it got crazy. the currents were out of control. >> reporter: a senior at thurgood marshall academic high school boarded the prom boat in alameda saturda afternoon to set off their beauty and the beast themed party. it was anything but smooth sailing. >> it was even hard to stand and, yeah, we all got nauseous. it was a terrible experience. >> reporter: while the boat was out here on the bay struggling to dock in the storm, students spent most of their prom night here huddled by the gates of oracle park trying to stay dry. >> we were screaming when we saw the boat. >> reporter: he got all dressed up in a tuxedo and rented a limo for his first ever prom night, but it was too dangerous for the boat to dock and set sail with 125 students onboard. >> it was not possible. >> we come from a community that's already facing a lot of challenges and we just want our students to be able to experience what every normal high schooler experiences. and they were ready for that last night. >> reporter: a teacher at thurgood marshall took this video of students who spent their hard-earned cash on tickets, outfits, hair, makeup, flowers and rides. >> they looked so beautiful. they were ready for a great party and now they -- we need to do it all over again and they need some help. >> reporter: school staff set up this go fund me page and the boat charter is trying to help as well, but they need to squeeze it in in less than three weeks before graduation. kate larsen, abc 7 news. >> that's all i kept thinking about all last week when i was forecasting rain for a weekend in may, what is it going to mess up? we are looking at dry pavement this morning. we've had quite a few crashes, unfortunately. a couple in the santa cruz mountains. we're hearing the roadway is clear. folks are slowing down to take a look at that as they get through the area. northbound 17 glenwood drive, a spinout crash. someone lost control and hit the center barrier there. it bounced back, they're blocking the slow lane and that is causing about a ten-minute delay. next traffic update at 5:30. alexis, thank you. in today's "gma's first look" they helped rescue the girl hours after she was kidnapped. here's marcus moore. >> reporter: in this morning's "gma first look" you are watching every parent's worst nightmare play out in real time. >> help me! help me, please! my daughter just got kidnapped! >> reporter: 8-year-old salem sabatka taken from her mother's arms. they were out for a walk when this man, 51-year-old michael webb, pulled up beside them and grabbed salem. her mother is pushed out of the car. the car was spotted about ten miles from where salem was taken. police find salem safe inside. >> we've got her. we've got her. he's in custody. >> reporter: coming up at 7:00 a.m. we'll hear from one of the heroes who helped track down the alleged kidnapper. i'm marcus moore, abc news, ft. worth. 5:20. a new report out this morning says government agencies in nearly all states use drones. the associated press obtained a copy of the report from the american association of state highway and transportation officials and found agencies are rapidly adopt iing drone technology, look search for endangered birds and more. how would you like to get paid six figures to live and work on a private island in the bay area? hollyfield live at james logan high school. >> reporter: good morning. talks broke down over the weekend, teachers will be walking off the job going on strike today. about 600 teachers and counselors in the new haven school district will be on the picket line in front of schools today. administrators say they know it is a personal decision whether to cross a picket line but school will be open and students not in class will be given an unexcused absence. here is what they can expect in school today. >> a place for students to check in. once we see how many students we have, we will have them go in groups with staff on site. students are going to be given enrichment activities that are . >> teachers warn these will be substitute teachers in classes today not regular teachers. the two sides are arguing over salaries. the district is offering a 3% bonus and a 1% salary increase the following year. the strike is set to start pretty soon here at 7:00 this morning. live in union city, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. in the east bay the ghost ship trial will resume and it will be a tough one. jurors are going to hear some of the final words of the people who died. prosecutors will play voice mails left and read text messages sent while the inferno is closing in on the victims. 36 people died in december 2016. firefighters say many of them had no chance to escape. the warehouse lieutenant face involuntary manslaughter charges in the case. 5:33 now and protests over abortion rights are not slowing down. over the weekend demonstrators marched in alabama and missouri in protest of recent anti-abortion measures passed in both states. the details in washington. >> reporter: good morning. the new laws set up a legal fight likely to go all the way to the supreme court to challenge landmark ruling in roe v. wade. hundreds marching to the alabam. >> my body, my choice. >> reporter: thousands more chanting a similar message in kansas city, missouri. >> abortion ban has got to go. >> reporter: protesting anti-abortion measures recently passed in both states which once in effect criminalizes the procedure for doctors and makes no exceptions for rape or incest. alabama and missouri are part of a wave of conservative states aiming to legally challenge roe v. wade. this year alone four other states have passed heartbeat bills. some prominent pro-life republicans are distancing themselves from the new state laws. >> you're seeing laws on both sides of this argument in the extreme. i don't support the alabama law. >> reporter: president trump weighing in tweeting he is strongly pro-life with three exceptions for, quote, rape, incest, and protecting the life of the mother. as soon as this week we could learn the supreme court will hear challenges to earlier abortion restriction laws in indiana and louisiana. and a memorial will take place in washington this morning for former east bay congresswoman ellen tauscher. the 67-year-old died last month following a battle with cancer. tauscher represented parts of contra costa and alameda counties on capitol hill for 13 years. she later served in the state department during president obama's administration. former secretary of state hillary clinton and california's senior senator dianne feinstein will deliver eulogies for tauscher. the latest now on the push for a free muni. another proposal has t time the suggestion comes due to the impact of services like uber and lyft. city leaders and community groups have called for free muni in the past. right now muni is free for senior citizens along with some young people. now "the examiner" reports a group of graduate students examined transit pricing and the team found that reducing or eliminating muni fares will make it competitive with uber or lyft. whether they ran for fun or competed for a title, thousands of runners may be sore after finishing bay to breakers. >> rain soaked the starting line about two weather with meteorologist mike nicco. let's look at what's going on with our temperatures. we'll start in the east bay. a lot of mid to upper 40s here. only pittsburg and concord are milder at 50 degrees so dress warmer this morning and we've got 50 in hayward, oakland, san francisco, 51. everybody else in the mid to f theainsolding off u look at . woopeninsula. roads, mass transit, ferry rides, giving them all pretty good numbers, if you will, or ut 7:00 this evening and that's when the chance of wet weather returns. here in the north bay, you can see we've got 48 at 7:00. still in the 50s at 11:00. more sunshine in afternoon. mid-60s. by 7:00 it's 57 degrees and just about ready to rain in the north bay. for the east bay in the 50s up until 11:00 and more sunshine. low 60s this afternoon. increasing clouds at 7:00 and 57 degrees. and here is our last stop, san francisco where we're in and out of the cloud cover through 11:00 with low 50s. 51, up to 57. we'll hang in the upper 50s with a little more sunshine until 5:00. the clouds start rolling in. and by 7:00 we'll start to see some showers just offshore and rolling in. if you're heading out this evening, have our and sunday. thanks, mike. some parts of the u.s. can expect another round of dangerous storms today. thunderstorms are expected to hit the midwest and the northeast. at least 38 tornadoes have hit since friday. they damage buildings across several states and you are looking at the aftermath in kansas. the home's owner said the home had been in her family for years. >> it was fast moving storm. it was about 15 seconds. we started hearing scraping sounds and things that we knew were shifting and so we weren't quite sure what we were going to find when we come out. >> rescuers had to free a woman from her severely damaged home in geronimo, oklahoma. several families are vowing to rebuild. a private boat damaging the habitat and driving away birds. researchers studied the local ecosystem. the new report says the number of boats anchored in the bay has increased by about 90 to 240 boats in 2016. boat anchors and other equipment are tearing up eel grass beds and driving away birds that feed on the eel grass. officials say the boats damaged nearly 41% of the habitat. a key part of abc 7's commitment to building a better bay area is every child has a chance to succeed. abc 7 news at the st. mary's center in oakland as the end child poverty bus tour arrived yesterday. almost 2 million california kids live in poverty. that's according to a state task force. the goal is to build
