oakland is at 45. dropped to 39 degrees at the san carlos airport. it is cold and you see a few showers through 10:00. as we get towards 2:00, more rain as this next system drops down from the north. look at the white up there. that's a winter storm warning for lake county and then by 6:00 tonight, it is soggy with those downpours. it's cold, numbers are barely at 50 degrees and we'll talk about that potential for more of that wintery mix in just a few minutes. chris? lisa, thanks. we have an alert for drivers. some lanes of the richmond-san rafael bridge are closed for repairs. this comes after chunks of concrete fell earlier this week. crews started shutting down lanes around 9:00 last night. right now they're making adjustments to the temporary reports. jobina fortson has more from the toll plaza. >> reporter: as a tow truck driver, he sometimes finds himself going over the richmond-san rafael bridge mu i multiple times a day. >> yesterday created quite a lot of chaos, especially on this side of the bay too. >> reporter: caltrans isn't planning to shut down the whole bridge again but from now until 7:00 a.m., traffic will be closed in both directions while crews place a metal plate over the damaged area. >> i appreciat the fact that they're doing it at night because shutting it down in the middle of the day like that makes my job harder, i'm sure make your guys' job harder, makes everyone's job a little bit harder than it should be. >> reporter: the repair is specifically targeting the bridge's expansion joint. caltrans confirmed today what the i-team reported yesterday, that an expansion joint caused the problem. it was worn down from heavy traffic. >> when i was driving back home yesterday i was pretty cautious. i was looking around just in case something else did happen. >> reporter: caltrans insists the bridge is safe. >> people's safety comes first. >> reporter: the repairs could impact saturday travel as well but the commuters we talked to don't seem to mind as long as this kind of back-up doesn't happen again. permanent repairs to the bridge will begin on monday. reporting in richmond, jobina fortson, abc7 news. abc7 news met the driver whose vehicle was struck by the falling debris. graham edwards of sonoma was lucky that the chunks of concrete only damaged his bumper. if it were seconds later, they might have crashed through the windshield. edwards happened to be looking up and saw the falling debris moments before >> i would say eight or ten pieces. >> reporter: rain somethiing? >> a small bucket's worth. there was a fair amount falling down. >> reporter: edwards said he felt lucky enough after the incident to buy his first ever lottery ticket. this b.a.r.t. station in san francisco is back open this morning after a stabbing last night. police responded to a fight on a train at 16th and mission around 7:30 last night. one person was taken to the hospital. police have a person of interest in custody. the station was closed as police investigated. federal investigators are trying to figure out what happened when a gas pipeline exploded in san francisco. the ntsb plans to develop a timeline of wednesday's events and conduct follow-up interviews. one thing investigators will be looking into is why it took more than two hours to shut off the gas. a third party breached the pg&e pipeline at parker avenue. the ntsb decided to investigate because of the extent of the damage. >> we were able to secure three or four -- three to four feet of the pipeline that we may be sending back to our lab in d.c. for further evaluation. >> the california public utilities commission is also conducting an investigation. thankfully, no one was hurt but several buildings were damaged. abc7 news reporter shows us the effort to help businesses that are impacted. >> reporter: for the last two years, sean and brittany have made hong kong lounge 2 their second home. >> we've probably spent most time with them than we have with anyone else in san francisco. they know our order by heart. >> reporter: at first, they tell me that dim sum was their selling point but with time, the staff and cooks became their friends. >> they were one of the first families we experienced in san francisco. >> reporter: so much so, this saturday, they had a reservation, now abruptly cancelled by the gas line explosion that damaged multiple buildings. >> after we saw the news, we started gofundme, put together a story and we just started reaching out to everybody we knew in san francisco. >> reporter: so far, the couple has raised over $2,000. their goal, to hopefully surpass the $10,000 mark. >> oh, goodness. we just kind of want the doors to be back open. we hope the best for them during this hard time. >> reporter: the second building directly affected by the fire is the huckleberry youth programs. >> there's water damage, all three floors are damaged completely. the building's unusable. >> reporter: the last two days, they have gotten calls from multiple businesses in the area ready to extend a helping hand. >> we have agencies, our peer agencies in the community, who have stepped up and said, we have office space, if you need something, you know, come and let us know. >> reporter: going back to that reservation of sean and brittany, they're still planning to come back to hong kong lounge today but this time around to look for the workers and give them the funds they've collected so far. in san francisco, abc7 news. abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area by looking for improvements and solutions. that includes public transportation. in the south bay, a welcome and long-awaited sight for commuters. b.a.r.t. trains will be running between fremont and san jose and while it will be some time before riders are able to get on board, testing along the new extension begins next week. abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo has more from the station. >> reporter: testing on the long awaited ten mile line to san jose starts next week. the santa clara valley transportation authority is heading up current testing. b.a.r.t. will take control later this year. >> there's been some technical difficulties that have delayed the opening of it, but this is a good step forward. >> reporter: council member emphasizes the extension is a big deal for the bay area, built in his district, a distance way at fremont b.a.r.t., commuters are hoping it will develop a better sense of timing. >> i'm going to take a lyft to san jose so it would be pretty convenient. >> reporter: daily b.a.r.t. rider monique says the extension would ease her track to see family in the south bay, traveling from richmond, having to stop for lyft is leaving her out in the cold. how much does that put you back? >> it's about $30 and like an hour or 45 minutes. >> reporter: when trains finally carry travelers along the bay area extension, ridership is estimated to start at 23,000 a day, doubling after 15 years. many say they're already on board. >> maybe it's millennial inconvenience where i'm just like i'd rather be more convenient with public transportation and it's more green. >> reporter: but more than millennial inconvenience, many say it just makes sense. >> how does this build a better bay area? >> i think having a ring of rail to completely circle the bay area is very important. >> reporter: the opening of this b.a.r.t. station is tentatively set for november. there are also plans to extend b.a.r.t. into downtown san jose. in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. all next week, abc7 news follows the bay area b.a.r.t. experience. see what it's like to ride now and what track the transit system will take next because a safer b.a.r.t. means a better bay area for all of us. if you rely on b.a.r.t. in the early morning hours, you'll notice a big change starting monday. b.a.r.t. trains will start running one hour later at 5:00 instead of 4:00. that's because of overnight seismic retrofitting inside the transbay tube. this change will affect about 2,900 commuters. buses will stop at selected stations to get riders across the bay. you can find the new schedule online at abc7news.com, just search b.a.r.t. developing now, a dangerous winter storm is hitting the pacific northwest. this is new video from the seattle area. you can see cars stuck on the roads as the snow started falling yesterday. accumulations could reach 8 inches in some areas. hundreds of flights at seatac have been cancelled or delayed. this is the second round of snow this week. many people stocked up on essentials. at some grocery stores, customers cleared the shelves and waiting in some very long checkout lives. yosemite national park is reporting significant damage from the snowfall earlier this week. the park says about 50 cabins and another 50 to 75 employee housing units were either damaged or destroyed. all visitor services at half dome village are closed as officials work to assess the damage. lisa is tracking the forecast for us. going back to all that snow happening in the seattle area, that could impact flights out of sfo because alaska airlines is the major hub up there. many people connect. so it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out. >> some of the wet tarmac out here in the bay area, certainly impacting the flights, and we do have some winds that will be picking up later on today, some gusty southwesterly winds as another cold area of low pressure drops down from the north, allowing for even a wintery mix here. it is 46 in the city. upper 30s in the outlying areas, and the damp pavement. but we are exiting one system, another arrives. i'll time it out for you next. lisa, thank you. i mean, i feel like i'm in a movie or something. that's strange. i mean, nothing ever happens like that in pleasanton. >> a shock for people who live there and bank at this wells fargo. the serious crimes that police are investigating this morning. also a beaver rescued from a busy road. the unusual behavior the animal is now showing oh! oh! oh! ♪ ozempic®! ♪ (announcer) people with type 2 diabetes are excited about the potential of once-weekly ozempic®. in a study with ozempic®, a majority of adults lowered their blood sugar and reached an a1c of less than seven and maintained it. oh! under seven? (music throughout) in the east bay, police are on the hunt for a group of people who robbed a bank in pleasanton . the took hostages and even shot a police officer yesterday. they forced three people to go into the bank at gunpoint around 11:00 a.m. the robbery was cut short when they tripped the alarm trying to enter the vault. a pleasanton police officer chased them down, firing at them, but they fired back, striking the patrol car's front windshield and hood. an assignment editor for abc7 news is the son of one of the hostages. he describes a conversation during the hold-up. >> one of the people forced inside of the bank had made the comment to the suspects, don't hurt me, i have a family. and the suspect shot back quickly, at that victim, well, we have families too. >> the suspects were seen in a brown honda cr-v. a police dog helped officers end a standoff in campbell. abc7 news was on the scene when officers captured a man who barricaded himself inside a denny's restaurant for nearly 12 hours. police say the man tossed coffee on a truck driver, pulled a gun on him, and then ran inside the restaurant. about six denny's workers and customers escaped safely after police called them and told them the suspect could be armed. in the north bay, a bald eagle has died after it was shot in petaluma. sonoma county wildlife rescue shared this video and pictures of the eagle. veterinarians at uc davis had to euthanize the eagle after discovering it had lead poisoning. it is a federal crime to harm eagles. in the east bay, vets are trying to figure out how a beaver ended up in a busy street. the animal was rescued in martinez last week. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley has more from lindsay wildlife rehabilitation hospital in walnut creek. >> she's got a small fracture of the tail. >> reporter: there are plenty of beaver x-rays veterinarians are poring over. nibbling on willow branches, this beaver looks content, but a week ago, it was found looking dazed in the middle of this busy intersection along alhambra avenue in martinez. a good samaritan wrapped the beaver in a blanket and rushed it to lindsay wildlife rehabilitation hospital. >> because she was found in the road, we were concerned she could have been hit by a car, she could have head trauma from being hit by a car. there's also a concern about was there something else going on and that's why she wandered out. >> reporter: this beaver is a young, basically teenaged female. she's not behaving appropriately. she should be afraid of me right now. so they're concerned about vision problems and neurological problems. her condition is guarded. she may not survive. the martinez beavers famously made headlines in 2007 when they built a dam on alhambra creek in the middle of the urban downtown. an effort to save them and prevent flooding put martinez on the national conservation map. >> we were in "national geographic" this year the martinez beaver story is a big part of our history. >> reporter: heidi started a nonprofit called worth a dam. there are t-shirts and an annual beaver festival. at their peak, there were seven beavers but they've moved uptheresa m upstream to a more secluded spot and now it's believed there are only three left. could the one found in the road be one of them or is it an outsider moving into the area? doctors are working to save its life. in walnut creek, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. good saturday morning to you. here's our storm impact scale. it's a 1 today. showers with brief downpours throughout the afternoon. the early evening hours a wintery mix in the hills, we've been seeing that, and the possibility of a thunderstorm. we've got rain in san francisco, southern marin, mill valley, the golden gate bridge, the sunset, daly city, down through 280 so we just have a few areas of rain but as we go up toward san pablo bay, into the east bay, emeryville and berkeley, 80 up towards hercules and martinez, highway 4, it's wet out there and we're looking at more rain arriving later on today. up in the upper elevations above 3,000 feet, that pink representing snow from mt. diablo to mt. hamilton and we will look for more of that possibly late tonight as that second system arrives with a colder air. you think it's cold already, that was the mountains, heavy snow in the sierra nevada. 8 to 12 inches of snow here from clear lake to middletown, so it is going to be a little bit dicey throughout the afternoon, and into the mountains, once again, not a good idea to be traveling there over the weekend. 2 to 4 feet above 3,000 feet and looking up to 5 feet on the peaks. whiteout conditions and local resorts picking up easily 3 feet from kirkwood up to incline, maybe 2 feet, tahoe city and if you've seen the pictures there, it looks just like walls and walls of snow, unbelievable. and compared to last year, we're doing fantastic. in the central sierra, 126% of normal and as you add up the north, central, and south, we're at 123% of average. so, certainly good news keeping the snow pack there but hopefully in the next several systems will stay cold enough. we don't want to add any rain to that snow pack. 41 in fremont, 45 in san rafael. 30s in los gatos. you can see how wet it is here from the golden gate bridge. cool showers, wintery mix possible for today and tomorrow, and looking at that unsettled weather pattern, right into next week. hour-by-hour, notice things not too active early, but you saw the showers out there. then by 1:00, 2:00, here comes the next system, dropping down from the north, the one that brought the snow to seattle and portland also bringing the cold air here. the rain through 6:00, 7:00, and then perhaps that snow up through cobb mountain, lake county, into our east bay and in the south bay, mt. bibdiablo or should say mt. hamilton getting a chance of that snow. mt. tam, maybe not likely and as we go through sunday, maybe we'll dry half so the wetter half of the weekend is today. a quarter to a third of an inch and then as we add in sunday's totals, could take us up to about a half inch in san francisco. so highs today, 54 in fremont, just in the 40s, lake port, and if you're headed over to fan fest at oracle, notice that the temperatures barely at 50 degrees. the accuweather 7 day forecast, a 1 on or storm impact scale today and tomorrow but it's a brutal one because it's so cold. and then looking at the break monday, more showers on tuesday. download our accuweather app. we could get heavier rain by the end of the week. so it's been really an unbelievable season so far. >> yeah, at least we don't have temperatures in the 40s or 30s or even lower than that in other parts of the country. perspective, right? chris nguyen. let's start with a quick look at the forecast. let's start with meteorologist lisa argen. >> certainly chilly out there. in fact, the trend continues for more snow levels getting lower around the bay area as a second cold system visits us this afternoon. we've got a 1 on our storm impact scale today for showers, brief downpours, that wintery mix, we're already seeing it and a chance of thunderstorm taking you to the east bay. berkeley and richmond, taking you back into san francisco, chinatown, the sunset, a light shower, and further south, just some scattered showers down the peninsula. but look at that. over on mt. hamilton and mt. diablo we are looking at temperatures hovering right around freezing, so some of that coming down as snow. 45 in oakland. it is 44 in castro valley. so the showers increase by midday today, and we'll talk about how it lasts into your sunday. chris? happening now, crews are making adjustments to a temporary fix on the richmond-san rafael bridge. here's a closer look at our richmond-san rafael bridge camera showing 580. one lane of traffic will be closed in each direction until 7:00 this morning. chunks of concrete fell from the bridge thursday. crews had to shut it down for 10 hours, backing up traffic for miles. the abc7 news i-team confirmed an expansion joint worn down from heavy traffic caused the problem. this morning, engineers are putting a larger metal plate over that expansion joint. >> i appreciate the fact that they're doing it at night because shutting it down in the middle of the day like that makes my job harder, i'm sure makes your guys' job harder, makes everyone's job a little bit harder than it should be. >> drivers could see another round of lane closures at 9:00 tonight if more work needs to be done. developing news, amazon ceo jeff bezos is accusing the parent company of the "national enquirer" of extortion and blackmail. now federal prosecutors are getting involved. here's abc's lindsey davis. >> reporter: federal prosecutors are now reviewing those bombshell allegations by jeff bezos, who claims "the national enquirer" attempted to extort and blackmail him by threatening to release compromising photos. the tabloid saying they acted lawfully and what they called negotiations with the amazon founder. but after he says he was threatened with those photos, he decided to go public, posting a lengthy blog which allegedly contained e-mails between him and representatives of the "national enquirer," leaving in embarrassing details, writing, of course i don't want personal photos published but i also don't want to participate in their well known practice of blackmail, political favors and political corruption. it all started last month when just days after bezos and his wife announced they were divorcing after 25 years, private text messages with his alleged mistress, lauren sanchez, were published by the "enquirer." bezos, who also owns "the washington post," which reports extensively on the trump administration, hired his own investigators, he says, to determine how the tabloid got pictures of him and if they were politically motivated, referencing ami chairman and ceo david peckerer's close relationship with the president who has frequently gone after bezos. >> "washington post," i have to tell you, i have respect for jeff bezos, but he bought "the washington post" to have political influence. >> reporter: bezos says he started receiving threatening e-mails referring to those personal photos that included a below the belt selfie and one of bezos naked wearing a white towel and a wedding ring. according to the e-mails, the company would agree not to publish, distribute, share or describe unpublished texts and photos. in exchange, bezos would stop his investigation and publicly state that he has no knowledge that the enquirer's reporting was politically motivated and one more major turn as prosecutors will now be reviewing whether the owners of the "national enquirer" violated an immunity agreement they reached with feds looking into a campaign finance violation that involved "the national enquirer" killing stories potentially damaging to the president just before the election. >> if the prosecutors in their discretion believe that a crime has been committed, that could wipe out that immunity agreement and lead to additional prosecution. >> reporter: lindsey davis, abc news, new york. now to the political crisis in virginia. this morning, there are new calls for the lieutenant governor to resign, including one from california senator kamala harris. abc news reporter tom has more on the new sexual assault allegation against justin fairfax. >> reporter: the week began with demands that virginia governor ralph northam resign after admitting he once wore black face. it ends with calls for virginia's second in command to step down as well. >> we'll have our say. i'm confident in the truth. thank y'all so much. >> reporter: lieutenant governor justin fairfax now facing a new accusation of sexual assault. meredith watson, one of his classmates at duke, says fairfax raped her in 2000. tonight, the lieutenant governor calling the allegation demonstrably false, insisting, i have never forced myself on anyone ever. watson is the second woman to come forward this week. dr. vanessa tyson alleges fairfax forced her to perform oral sex in a hotel room at the 2004 democrat national convention. fairfax says their encounter was consensual. the lieutenant governor calling for a full investigation to clear his name. abc news, new york. new this morning, results of the president's second annual check-up are in. physician sean conley says he is in very good health. conley performed a medical check-up yesterday with 11 board certified specialists. details like weight and blood pressure were not released. dr. conley said the 72-year-old would likely remain healthy for the duration of his presidency. today, oakland teachers are gathering to take notes on the los angeles teachers strike as they prepare to possibly hold their own. students from six oakland high schools staged a sickout yesterday to show support for teachers threatening to strike. some students stayed home. others marched to district headquarters but schools did remain open. this afternoon, the oakland education association will hold a public forum to discuss strike tactics. oakland teachers are asking for higher wages and smaller class sizes. >> i don't think it was a hard decision at all to walk out because i want these teachers to get at least a livable pay and more. >> they're trying to find it. they're turning over every rock and looking in every crack. they're trying to find the money somewhere. >> 40s. it's cold there, and back home in the bay area, we're looking at not only cold conditions here but looking like this pattern is going to continue. so, current numbers right now, 38 in santa rosa, 37 in gilroy, and elsewhere in between, some of the milder numbers in oakland at 45, 39 in brentwood and behind me, wow, look at that. that is a snowy sierra nevada where we have that winter storm warning effect into monday. snow continues in parts of the bay area with lowering levels once again. live doppler 7 but the yellows indicate the showers, which are offshore and also into san francisco. look at daly city here. also looking at wet weather, guadalupe canyon parkway and as we go further to the east, the bay view looking wet and further south, looking at san bruno, wet pavement. emeryville, the bay bridge, some slick roadways for you and also into piedmont, highway 13 so it is certainly wet out there. it's cold and you go up a thousand feet or 2,000 feet and some of this coming down is a wintery mix. pleasant hill and concord, 680, the wet weather and further over the hills you can see the showers and this is where from mt. hamilton, temperatures just above 30 degrees, looking at the mountains here, where it continues to be in the 20s with the snow coming down. lake county today, that next system dropping down quickly so allowing for a wintery mix through 4:00 tomorrow, 8 to 12 inches of snow. middletown and with the winter storm warning through monday, common to see 4 to 5 feet here, some of the highest peaks in the resorts looking at 2 to 3 feet, no problem here from kirkwood to tahoe city. above it, you can see the clear skies. cool with showers. the wintery mix possible through the weekend and next week, we are still looking quite unsettled. it's a 1 on our storm impact scale with brief downpours throughout the middle of the afternoon, the evening hours, chance of a thunderstorm. that's that cold, unstable air dropping quickly from the north throughout the day today. and as we look at our computer animation by 3:00 in the afternoon, we have those showers all around the bay and it's going to continue throughout the evening hours. this is 7:00 and we'll see most of the moisture being swept south through the overnight hours but that's when the cold air moves in and you can see the white there and the pink representing the possible snow from the higher elevations around here. tomorrow, looking at less moisture, so rainfall totals mostly today anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 inch but more than that in the north bay and we add in your sunday for another tenth or 0.2, perhaps maybe 0.4 in hayward total for the weekend. highs today in the 40s to the low to mid 50s and another chilly afternoon in the accuweather 7 day forecast, a 1 on our storm impact scale today and tomorrow, the scattered showers, the wintery mix, bit of a break midday tomorrow into monday and then more cold weather for tuesday and wednesday and
