rain and snow and stef steady showers from livermore toward tesla road and mixed resip over mt. diablo in pink and tracking showers in the santa cruz mountains so north bay getting a spottier return around napa, the cord elia junction out of town, it could be rough across i'll show you what it looks like around lake county. we're seeing the mix of wintry precip on the storm impact scale this is a level 1. showers and tonight brief downpours. rai rain/snow mix and a chance of thunder. tonight still seeing widespread activity. and showers become a little less numerous in coverage. but this is just the first storm. another storm coming. i'll be back to time it out for you as we head towards your weekend, coming right up. >> thanks a lot. now track the weather any time with the abc 7 app. we have live doppler 7 on the app for you. enable the push alerts to get weather advisories on your phone or tablet. now we have breaking news out of campbell. a police standoff with a man holed up in a denny's restaurant an bascom avenue is now over. that is almost 12 hours after the situation began. this is video abc 7 news shot just in the past half hour. look at that. the suspect was taken into custody by police and the man was reportedly armed. the 11-hour standoff started when he threw coffee at a truck operator and then pulled out a gun and pointed it at the worker. the suspect then went back into the restaurant and sat down at a booth. that was around 5:30. >> he looked like he didn't know what he wanted to do. he was walking back and forth like he was panicking. like he was just -- he was like -- like what someone does in that situation. panics. >> police at one point used a flash bang device to try to get the man's attention. she say bascom avenue from campbell to dry creek remains closed until the situation is resolved. >> federal authorities arrested a vallejo couple charged with running a pill manufacturing operation at an elderly care facility and con taped methamphetamine. we are live in the newsroom with the story. where are the eldery residents now. >> five of them are still at the licensed facility. tonight the department of social services has launched an investigation and employees at the facility tell abc 7 news they had no idea. drug enforcement administration agents were the unlikely visitors to genesis care home for the elderly in vallejo on thursday. >> this is something that just shocked the heck out of all of us. >> reporter: the assisted living facility raid on the 11 hub block of lewis was the culmination of an investigation beginning in 2017 for a counterfeit pill-making operation. according to the criminal complaint, the facility's owner and her husband both california state lightensed elder care providers were pedaling ecstasy bearing cool-aid and tesla and the pills actually contained methamphetamine, not mdma. this employee who didn't want to show her face told us she runs the facility. >> it wasn't here. it was on the other side in the building separated. so this is where it starts. >> reporter: she invited us inside and showed us where five residents reside, along with a door covered by a curtain and movable shelves separating the assisted living facility from the alleged pill mill. they were living on the other side. according to the criminal complaint, the couple was involved in the distribution of similar tablets as far back as 2008. an one of the alleged sellers would meet at the assisted living facility to obtain the pills. 17 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and a pill press were con fis katded. >> if we had any inclination we would have not allowed it. we would have told the authorities. we would have stopped it. >> reporter: the department of social services is now investigating. it lastin speblgted the facility in august of 2018 while the dea called sip re ano the owner, according to dss, her parents are listed as the licensee and she is the licensee of a second facility in fairfield. barbara rim said she's been delivering prescription medications to the elderly residents at the vallejo location for ten years. >> i would have suggested a family member to come here. >> reporter: agents say the couple would often receive pill manufacturing-related deliveries bens motherlsoved in ve mailboxs all of this. there is not an arrest warrant for her but the dea said this case is ongoing. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> thank you. federal investigators are now on the scene of wednesday's gas line rupture and explosin in san francisco. sky 7 was overhead as fbi agents and investigators from the national transportation safety board toured the site on geary boulevard in the jordan park neighborhood. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas joins us live. eric? >> reporter: one of the big questions everybody is had today is why was the fbi involved? the ntsb said they're assisting in gathering evidence and processing information. there is no criminal investigation involving the fisch at th-- involving the fbi this does happen from time to time and not all that usual. and on geary and parker, this is the site of the big fire, the natural gas pipeline that was breached and the fire reaching 40 feet into the air. the hong kong lounge ii burned out structure lind it had a big hole in the ground while investigators decide what they need to look at and what they don't need to look at. pg&e is also on the scene as well. now the ntsb held a news conference just a little while ago, about an hour ago and told us many things they are looking at. here is what they had to say. >> a key air the ntsb will examine is the same one we wondered about. >> one area that we're still interested in is the length of time that it took to shut off the gas. >> reporter: it took pg&e two hours to put out the flames that shot 40 feet into the air. fortunately no one was hurt. ntsb has examined the seven valves crews used to shut off the flow and looking closely at a chunk of the pipe itfself. >> we're able to secure three to four feet of the pipeline that we may be sending back to our lab in d.c. for further evaluation. >> reporter: among the agencies, the ntsb met with others providing facts in this investigation are the cpuc, the san francisco fire department and the national pipeline safety organization. part of the department of transportation. live here at geary and parker. eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. after falling concrete shut down the rich mand san rafael bridge for hours yesterday. tonight caltrans insists the bridge is safe. an expansion joint failed causing several chunks of concrete to fall from the upper to the lower deck. they allow structures to move under changing weather conditions and earthquakes. and caltrans shut down the bridge for several hours yesterday to inspect it making a mess of the evening commute. work begins next week to replace the joints that passed inspection last august. >> the work is being designed right now. that is why we anticipate starting work on monday. we're working our -- our enginecora tom . >> a w freedman met the driver whose car was struck by the concrete. he'll bring you more on that story at -- on abc 7 news at 6:00. big changes starting monday for b.a.r.t. riders. the agency is pushing the start from 4:00 to 5:00 a.m. to perform seismic safety work. buses will run from select stations to help affected riders get around. an estimated 2900 people will be affected. trains in the evenings will run every 24 minutes instead of every 20. and on sundays b.a.r.t. will cut the number of trans-bay trains in half. only the pittsburg answer line will operate to the east bay. could you find the schedule on abc7news.com, search b.a.r.t. and the search continues r for -- for four men who robbed a wells fargo in pleasanton and shot a police officer. the suspects forced people outside at the atm and forced them inside. one of the people forced inside was the father of abc 7 news assistant editor dave russo. >> the bank employees had said they did not get into the vault. that they did trip the alarm. >> as the suspects drove off, police say they shot at a patrol car. that officer was taken to its hospital with a nonlife-threatening injury. the suspects were last seen in this suv which police say they carjacked in merewood drive and hill view court about two miles away from the robbery. david louie is at the bank right now. he will have a live report for you with the very latest coming up on abc 7 news at 6:00. students from six oakland high schools participated in a sick out showing support for teachers striking. some students marched four miles from oakland technical high school to the district offices. education reporter lyanne melendez explains today's action was not financially beneficial for the district. [ chanting ] >> reporter: oakland schools were open today but many high school students called in sick. to show their support for teachers. some students stayed home, others marched to district headquarters. >> what do you say to people who say you should be in school? >> i think if school is underfunded and underperforming, why should we be in a cool when the district clearly has no respect for students. >> reporter: oakland teachers are threatening to strike if they're demands are not met. they've been without a contract since july 2017. teachers continue to ask for higher wages and smaller class sizes. >> i'm going to be missing so much of what i could be learning and i do like my teachers. i just don't like they have to go so extreme to get what they should already have. >> teachers are enormously popular in oakland. they work too hard for too many hours and i feel like the strike issin kreeszingly inevitable but they don't want to strike. >> this week the superintendent revealed the school district must find ways to reduce thult in tsoces. both sides remain divided on how much the district can really afford to pay teachers. >> the staff is looking. they're trying to find it. they're turning over every rock and looking at every crack to try to find the money. >> reporter: by having the sick day the district gets to ada funding from the state. the teachers got paid it appears raiders days in oakland may not be over after all. they are in negotiations to play in oakland next season. the talks began this week and are the first the two sides have had since the city of oakland filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the raiders and the nfl in december. that kind of touched off a bit of controversy and difficulty between the city and team. it was reported this week that the raiders had reached a deal to play at oracle park in san francisco. but those talks are reportedly dead after pushback from san francisco officials. say it ain't so. one of our favorite san francisco giants is going to texas. the rangers have signed huntder pence to a minor league contract with invitation to major league spring training and he made all-star three times and won two world series with the team and fans would argue we wouldn't have won those championships without his team spirit that earned him the nickname the reverend. pence was about town with his electric scooter before it became hip. he hid signed hatss and jerseys around the city for fans to find. he always wins at halloween. especially when he channels napoleon dynamite. hunter pence and his wife alexis stopped by abc 7 in december, before he left for winter camp in the dominican republic and they told us how their hearts were always in san francisco. and going to show you that right there. check pledges to stop underage vaping. today scott glodly sent letter that makes marlboro cigarettes an called for a joint meeting to discuss whether they're honoring commitments on this issue. the companies say they are moving ahead with plans to stop teenagers from getting their products. juul controls most of the u.s. e-cigarette market, key player. police arrested a 23-year-old woman after she was seen vandalizing a church. police say this video shows 23-year-old jacqueline cheferia inside of a saint patrick's church and seen pushing over a 15 foot crucifix as you could see. afterward police say she destroyed art work and a statue in front of praying parishioners. she's being held on $25,000 bond. san jose police are looking for other possible victims of a -- of a tae kwon do instructor accused of lewd acts on two teenagers. police arrested andrew su on wednesday after he owns and operates a tae kwon do studio on blossom hill road. investigators say he allegedly touched one of the girls inappropriately in 2013. the other in late 2017. anyone with additional information about this case or related cases is asked to contact the san jose police department immediately. well authorities are warning north bay residents of a phone scam involving callers posing as calistoga police department officers asking for money. be on the lookout for this. police say the calls show up on caller i.d. a b ins le. the cal remind residents that officers will never call to request money over the phone on behalf of any agency. it is a scam. hi there, it is a wet, chilly end to move around to other parts of the bay area. seeing some pretty good rain around san leandro across 185. i'll track this and show you where it is heading. to be prepared, san leandro toward danville and 551 and mt. diablo after that turning to rain/snow mix. danville boulevard across 680 walnut creek steady showers and as we look at the santa cruz mountains, moderate pockets of rain. lake county, the wintry mix around cobb mountain near our radar site and we'll continue to see this. so there is a winter storm warning until 4:00 p.m.ond sunday. limited visibility. they'll see snow accumulating there. so definitely travel difficulties. and if you are thinking about going to tahoe, go now. right now the only chain restrictions are on state route 4 but a winter storm warning in effect until 4:00 a.m. on monday. i advise you to hold off on travel after a few more hours as the snow starts to pick up. up to five feet expected for peaks. snow level dropping a bit. very much lowering to about 2,000 feet and whiteout conditions are expected. look at this lovely view from our tahoe camera. we'll pan around to show you the view because the snow has been piling up. and they will be counting that snow in feet in the coming days. here is a look at storm system. it is a compact system spinning up moisture and we're seeing modder at to heavy rainfall. here is your travel forecast. if you are traveling tomorrow out of our bay area airports, breezy with showers. low to mid-50s as you take a look at other airports. honolulu showers but warm. 76. and new york city and chicago will be sunny but very cold. los angeles some rain and 58 degrees. right now here in the bay area, feeling that winter chill. 30s, 40s across the region. richmond-san rafael bridge showing you a slippery view so take it easy on the roads. showers continue overnight. a wintry mix this weekend and unsettled pattern will greet us next week. first thing in the morning, patches of valley fog and a few showers and a cold morning. 30s for many of you and a few 40s and tomorrow afternoon make sure you have your umbrella. you'll notice it is scattered showers across the bay area, 40s and 50s for your saturday. on our storm impact scale, this is a level one. showers, brief downpours. look for a mix of precipitation over the higher terrain of rain/snow and a chance of thunder. into 8:30, light to moderate rain still moving across the region. not as numerous as we head into 11:00 p.m. as far as shower activty concerned. 1:30 in the morning still seeing snow over mt. hamilton and then a little bit of a breather. tomorrow morning just some spotty showers before it actually starts to pick back up again for the afternoon and evening hours. we'll start to see more activity going into saturday night. and we are looking at rainfall potential through saturday night. this is of course quite a range across the region. many of you in that tenth to half an inch category. tomorrow is the giants fan fest. take the poncho with you. 47 in the morning. a few showers. chilly in the afternoon. and some rain. sunday we are tracking a rain/snow mix as the colder storm comes through here, you will notice very scattered in nature. and it is pretty much done by the afternoon hours. so after about 5:00 p.m. you are good to go if you have out door activities. level one for saturday and sunday wintry mix and
