Live where you live, this is abc7 news. A powerful winter storm is slamming the bay area right now. Live doppler 7 is lit up in various shades of green. Tonight, were seeing downpours, trees down, as well as Power Outages. Good evening. Thanks for joining us. Im ama daetz. And im dan ashley. Weve seen waves of rain, sweeping through and gusty winds. Lets get over to meteorologist sandhya patel with live doppler 7. Take a look at live doppler 7 right now. Im going to get you into street level radar. First in the north bay, right around south santaro, petaluma street, steady rain. It has picked up in intensity. As we look at the east bay, san pablo road, it is coming down hard across 680, walnut creek, danville boulevard, concord. In the south bay, spottier showers, but steady from san jose to coyote, heading into the santa cruz mountains. This is just the beginning of whats to come. This storm is a vigorous storm. Its going pick up more moisture off the coastline here and impact the entire state. Look at this moisture train. Atmospheric river is what its tapping into. Its a strong level three on our exclusive abc 7 storm impact scale. Tonight, tomorrow, heavy rain, urban flooding, one to two inches in the valleys, three to four in the hills. Winds are gusting about 33 miles an hour in fairfield. Weve seen 50mileanhour wind gusts in the hills. A high wind warning until 10 00 a. M. Could take down more trees and powerlines. Rapid rises are expected on streams and creeks. Do not cross flooded roadways. The high tide als will lead to e flooding across the region. Ill be back with a closer look coming up. Long night. Sandhya, thank you very much. We do have Live Team Coverage spread across the bay area tonight. Well start in south bay. Amanda del castillo is live in san jose where it is really coming down, amanda. Reporter yeah, dan, ama, the rain has been calling since before 9 00 tonight. Its not the rain i wind, but the win thats paired wit. Ive had to adjust my stance to remain upright as weve been preparing for this broadcast. As we mentioned, more weather is on the way. Now, the city of san jose, they take winter storm preparations in the summer. How is that for preparation . All that work is made more difficult when debris clogs leading to flooding. Flooding is a possibility tonight. The winter storm is expected to intensify. Good news for san jose. The citys Transportation Department has about 20 crews standing by to respond as the storm grows. Meantime, you can still take safety into your own hands. One south bay neighbor was taking no chances. He filled his truck with sandbag after sandbag. His family home suffered quite a bit of flooding in the last strong storm. Im not even ready. Im just concerned about what happened last week. I dont want to be flooded wen. Reporter six sandbag stations are spread across the south bay. Helpful tools provided by the santa clara water district. You can see the rain still continuing to fall. It has been pretty steady, intensifying at times. But that wind, i have to tell you, that is kind of you can see it right now. Its whats really, really bothering me tonight. Still struggling to keep up, but im reporting live in san jose. Amanda del castillo, abc7 news. Youre doing a good job of staying upright, amanda. It is really intense. Thats what it looks like if the south bay. Lets turn your attention now to the east bay. Reporter katie utehs is in fremont where there has been a power outage tonight. Reporter people in this neighborhood have been without power going on five hours now, and the wind picked up, as well, which is making that tree trimming behind me a precarious job this evening. But that tree is the culprit of this power outage as the limbs got tangled in the lines. Now, im told the delay in restoration of power is because pg e is expecting the worst of the storm to hit overnight. So they staffed crews to start at midnight. So there was some delay in getting folks out here to work on those trees. No word exactly on when theyre going to restore power here. The outage here canfield drive started around 6 00. 98 customers are without fire. Neighbors salines sparked as the wind whipped the winds so they called 911. I came down and i looked, and it looked like two power lines were hitting each other within a tree. As it did, it just sparkled like fireworks. Reporter fortunately, theres no damage to my property, just an outage. The pg e outage map shows small Power Outages in union city, pleasanton, and of course, here in fremont. Pg e does have a very helpful, interactive map on their website where you can check outages and estimated restoration times. Abc7news. Com. Katie utehs, abc7 news. Katie, thank you. Now to the north bay. Jobina fortson is live at the park and ride. It closed thunderstois morni because of flooding. How are things now . Reporter the winds have picked up, although this area is not experiencing flooding at the moment, the threat is still there, which is why you see these yellow barricades set up along the lowlying areas of the parking lot here, along with the sign that greets drivers as soon as they pull into this lot, letting them know of the risk in this area. About ten minutes up the road, the health and wellness campus set up a Severe Weather emergency shelter. We stopped by and did see people come in. The shelter has food, a space for 80 people to sleep, and they are not at capacity. Tonight, people can check in as the storm is affecting the areas they may be inhabiting, the creeks and rivers and such, and theyll be asked to leave by 6 30 in the morning and a shuttle will take them for breakfast if they like or leaving on their own. Reporter and while riding around the north bay, we did observe people, lots of people on the road, driving rather quickly for the conditions out here. So remember, everyone, please slow down on the road waist. Reporting live, jobina fortson, abc7 news. Thank you so much, jobina. Taking a live look at sfo, where windy weather is proving to be a headache for flyers. More than 400 flights delayed, 90 canceled. Now, if you were planning to drive to tahoe, dont travel to see sierra. A winter storm is in effect through monday. And you can check conditions on the abc7 news app. Stay with us. What would she do without me . Heres a look at live doppler 7. There is a lot of green, that means a lot of rain. Sandhya will have your full forecast in just a few minutes. A potential danger to wildlife is working beneath the waters of the monterey bay marine sanctuary. Its been there for a hundred years and only now coming to surface because of the curiosity of a teenage girl. The problem is golf balls, tens of thousands of them. Dan noyes is here to explain why the top public golf course in the country is part of the problem. Take a look at this picture taken of what is supposed to be protected waters. That is a california sea otter, and its not holding a clam or muscle, its a golf ball and its a serious issue. Pebble beach is where the rich and famous come to play golf. It sits directly on the california shoreline, just steps away from the most environmentally sensitive waters on the west coast. But look below the surface and this is what youll find. Seeing the sea floor covered in trash was a straight shot to the heart. Reporter the coast has been part of alex webers life since she was is born. She went diving and was stunned at what she found. We would dive and pick up 2500 golf balls and two weeks later we would pick up another 2500 golf balls. Reporter she wondered just how many golf balls are there . The more we researched, the more we discovered, no one has ever looked at golf balls in the ocean. She said she had read some of the scientific articles that came out of my ph. D. Work. Reporter she picked up with researcher matthew soboku to determine how big the problem is. Its so rubbery. I said lets put together a report and try to publish a scientific article of your own that states the scope of the problem, the intensity of the problem, and what we can do about the problem. Reporter with ma shoe overseeing her research, alex went to work collecting golf balls in the ocean and on the beach new three coastal golf courses, sorting them by their condition. We start with Something Like this, obviously with the polyurethane shell and the gloss. As that breaks down, it loses the paint and the shell. Reporter over time, the balls roll around on the ocean floor and break into pieces. This rubber band that was in this golf ball, theres 275 yards of it. That will continue to unraffle and get tangled up in the kelp, so it sits on the surface of the ocean. Reporter the balls had been deteriorating for decades. Pebble beach has been a course since 1919. Its not the problem of golf balls constantly being hit into the ocean, theres 100 years of golf ball pollution out there, and thats continuing to wear down. Reporter that waste could potentially impact wild life, including fish, the sea otter and sea lions and coastal birds who may eat tiny pieces of plastic. Theres not a lot of study done on the chemical compounds in golf balls and how that affects organisms consuming this material. Until alex looked at this problem, no one had really studied this probl a potential effects at all. Reporter after two years of work, alex and matthew published their paper that concluded post of the balls came from pebble beach. They found more than 35,000 in the water off the golf course. When alex added those balls to ones collected in the same area by the marine sanctuary and pebble beach ion, the total found went up to 50,000 golf balls. Since then, weve collected approximately 20,000 additional golf balls. The fact there were so many offshore in certain locations was new to us. Because unless somebody dove in that area and brought it to our attention, we didnt know. Reporter pebble beach is now telling caddies and golfers to make sure their balls stay out of the ocean. They have worked with the monterey marine bay sanctuary and aquarium to identify key areas to clean up. We now have a collection planned to go 18 years this time to 11arep satelocations, and pick up golf balls that are accidently hit into the ocean. Reporter the marine sanctuary agreed to work closely with the course to make sure the cleanup is done right. Were going to be looking over their shoulder. Reporter the sanctuary protects 276 miles of california coast. Its been interesting to get to the bottom of the golf ball issue and realize there could be other areas on the coast that we need to look at. Reporter alex will be heading to Uc Santa Barbara to study marine ecology. Golf courses should be responsible for picking up these balls. Reporter its reallyor naot Commission Says plasticol gf acceptable. Theyre looking at all options to clean them up and keep it from happening. Good for her. So sad to see. But a great change from her work. Absolutely. Thats true. She does have a bright future. Thanks, dan. We have a lot of rain to talk about tonight. We do a whole lot.
