routine nose procedure. her family speaking out this morning. cash no longer king. we take you to the restaurants now accepting only cards. the growing trends nationwide. plus, forget coffee. the new way to mix a cocktail in an instant. and -- stonthintones eet th. y odern day caveman had cops saying yabba dabba do ♪ they're a place right out of history ♪ well, the fashion was definitely a crime there, no doubt. i'm kendis gibson. >> good morning. i'm lynda lopez. we begin with breaking news. a new fire burning out of control in california overnight forcing more families to flee their homes. this fire erupted near a freeway in san bernardino county where people packed up their cars to escape the fast-moving wall of flames. >> and cameras caught the moment a palm tree was catching on fire. you can see the embers there just flying off in the wind. the statewide death toll from these historic fires is now 50 with the bodies of 6 more people found in the rubble. this morning, the terror rages on in southern california. >> the terrain is too steep. you can't get hand crews in here now. >> reporter: with an all-out aerial assault on new flare-ups surrounding the woolsey fire. but to the north the new battle is how to recover from the devastation. in the charred remnants of what was once the town of paradise, small reminders still stand, a sign, a steeple, a flag post. >> i should have been there. >> reporter: with hundreds of people unaccounted for, the search for loved ones is becoming more desperate. >> i think that there's hope. but also we have to prepare ourselves for the worst. >> reporter: but in the midst of the destruction, an emotional reunion. >> it's pretty rough. >> reporter: this family of 19 people was forced to flee their homes. now they've set up tents in this parking lot finally reuniting days after the fire burned down their town. >> we'll rebuild one day, but it's definitely been tough, you know. >> reporter: jennifer kramer drove through the flames to escape, her car clothes, their dogs and her 1-year-old twins. >> just seeing things blow up and hearing it blow up and stuff like that was pretty, pretty scary. >> reporter: and this extended family of 65 aunts, uncles, grandparents lost all 15 of their homes in the area. >> right now everybody in our family is accounted for, and we're really thankful for that. >> reporter: we're getting a new look at the extent of the destruction. this drone video showing block after block of blackened houses. >> you can see there's still, you know, some things survived. so, again, there's glimmers of hope. >> reporter: as rebuilding begins, a silver lining begins as well. we told you yesterday about the nurse who risked everything to help his patients get to safety. >> it was just constant explosions. >> reporter: well, toyota saw the picture of his burned pickup truck on facebook, and the company left this comment, don't worry about your truck. we're honored to get you a new one. and both major fires are about 35% to 40% contained. the winds are expected to die down slightly today, but any rain, several days away. we turn to the white house and new evidence of a growing power struggle involving everyone from first lady melania trump to chief of staff john kelly. in a stunning moment, the first lady called for a senior white house aide to be fired at the very moment that aide was seen with the president yesterday. abc's kenneth moton has the latest on what may be happening next. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, lynda. it's no surprise or secret the spouse of a president has some type of influence on his staff, but it's highly unusual for it all to play out so publicly. this morning from the east wing of the white house, first lady melania trump's rare and public call for the firing of mira ricardel, the deputy national security adviser was seen smiling yesterday behind president trump at an event. an hour later this statement from the first lady's spokeswoman on ricardel. "it is the position of the office of the first lady that she no longer deserves the honor of serving in this white house." sources in the west wing tell abc news the feud stems from mrs. trump's first solo trip to africa last month. the first lady irritated with ricardel and felt she had treated her staff disrespectfully. on that trip abc's tom llamas spoke with the first lady about the people surrounding the president. >> it's very difficult sometimes because i'm so busy with my office, i don't get involved with west wing. >> do you think there's still people there that he can't trust? >> yes. >> reporter: "the wall street journal" reports the first lady's office believed ricardel recruited by national security adviser john bolton was behind negative stories and clashed with james mattis who was asked about ricardel. >> i don't comment on other people's staffing issues. >> reporter: those latest staffing issues come as the president considers another shakeup. multiple sources say trump is looking for possible replacements for chief of staff john kelly and preparing to remove department of homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen. the time line for a staff shake-up remains unclear. for now ricardel still has her job. the white house and the national security council have not commented about the potential departures. lynda, kendis. >> kenneth moton, thank you. also out of washington, the so-called never nancy movement may be gaining momentum on capitol hill. a group of house democrats who oppose nancy pelosi for speaker now claims they have enough votes to deny her the speaker's gavel. pelosi has said she remains 100% confident she'll get the job. in the meantime, the election recount in florida has run into a new snag. the machines in palm beach county overheated last night and gave incorrect totals. so they have to start all over again. officials are racing to make tomorrow's 3:00 p.m. deadline. a state judge has granted palm beach county more time for the recount while a judge hears a lawsuit today brought by senator bill nelson. he wants all counties to get more time. the trial of notorious mexican drug lord el chapo is now under way after an explosive bribery claim. the defense claims el chapo is actually a fall guy for another drug kingpin who bribed the president of mexico. the mexican government denies taking any bribe. two jurors were dismissed from the trial tuesday. one saying she was suffering from anxiety. we turn now to the weather and the coldest air of the season is moving into the northeast today while parts of the south damage. >> reporter: when 36-year-old laura avila decided to have a simple rhinoplasty procedure, she opted to drive 20 minutes south into mexico to save some money. >> the price, of course, you know, comparing those prices to the ones in the u.s., i mean, it was less than one-third of it. >> reporter: avila arrived at the clinic and went into the operating room as normal. doctors telling her fiance to come back in four hours. but avila never got the surgery and her fiance says doctors refused to let him see her. >> i was really concerned, and i got upset because they wouldn't let me see her. >> reporter: after hours of waiting, the awful truth was finally revealed. >> they injected anesthesia to her spine at the body, it went to her brain, which caused severe swelling. >> reporter: doctors say the anesthesia used in the surgery did not work as intended. avila going into cardiac arrest leaving her with severe brain damage and little hope of recovery. >> we're just shocked and numb and don't want to believe it's true. she will never be our laura again. >> reporter: her family now faced with a terrible decision. >> we felt that, you know, she still had a lot of fight in her. >> as a family we need to decide whether we want to remove her from life support. >> avila's family now says she's opening her eyes and moving her hands, but doctors are concerned she may never fully recover. monica lewinsky is revealing new details about her affair with former president clinton. speaking to "vanity fair" magazine, she says that she decided to take part in a p op m the affair began. >> i kind of looked into the open doorway, and bill happened to be standing there, and he motioned me in. i don't think my heart had ever beat as fast. unbeknownst to me, i was on the precipice of the rabbit hole. i felt terrible. i was scared, and i just -- i was mortified and afraid of what this was going to do to my family, and, you know, i still was in love with bill at the time. >> she
