>> yeah. but i'm alive. i'm alive. it started shaking the house. i got down on the floor. my ears popping. i started crying, lord, take us through this. i've been in this house 11 years. >> you ain't never seen a storm like this. >> no, no, no, in panama city, i don't think anybody has. >> reporter: just to the east, mexico beach wiped out. once a beautiful coastal town now transformed into an apocalyptic scene of obliterated homes. so many people still desperate for news and cut off from all communication. >> you swam out? >> yes. >> of your home. >> to a boat. >> yes. >> and that's how you survived. >> reporter: survivors giving ginger phone numbers to call, telling loved ones they're alive. >> your daughter and her husband got on to a boat that was in a trailer and rode out the entire five hours of the storm. >> my husband and i are just beside ourselves. >> reporter: my colleague david muir went to two hospitals that were badly damaged. >> our hospital is full of patients and a lot of them are sick. they have to be moved quickly. >> reporter: they begin medevacing the most critical out. when we continued through the destruction, we discovered humane society workers safe but trapped by fallen trees. >> are you guys stuck in there? >> reporter: putting out an sos call for them and the animals. >> i put out a post because we've got to transport these animals out of here. i put it on facebook. please, everybody share. we've got, what, 35 dogs and 60 to 70 cats? that means you're transporting one or two at a time over all of this. >> reporter: we just called the national guard. hopefully they can help. >> you did? >> they're happy to be alive, i'm sure, but they're not happy right now. they're just so cold and hungry. >> reporter: but making it through the storm safely, now in a shelter up for adoption. i'm rob marciano in panama city. >> michael's strength, by the way, has diminished. still making a mess, though, on its way offshore. you see the radar. the system there is moving north and east and heading towards the atlantic ocean. forecasters predicting it should be fully gone by tonight. >> the storm is bringing intense wind gusts and several inches of rain, triggering widespread flash flooding across north carolina. dozens of swift water rescues and evacuations have been under way across that state and into virginia. that's where this couple found themselves trapped inside their truck in fast-moving floodwaters. emergency crews from roanoke did bring them to safety. >> well, the storm has also left nearly 1.5 million people in six states without power this morning. >> accuweather meteorologist julia wyden joins us now with what's ahead for those people today. good morning. >> lynda, kendis, we saw devastating impacts from michael in the form of high gusting winds and heavy rain. now it's very quickly moving out to sea but maintaining that tropical storm status, even as it moves its way up into cooler waters well off to the north and east on saturday. expecting to continue to see some morning rain in parts of coastal new england, but that is very quickly going to push offshore and we'll get cooler and dryer air to settle in all across the northeast. still some blustery winds could see areas that get upwards to 40-mile-per-hour gusts into the carolinas and that will fade as we head into the afternoon. meanwhile on the west coast, we're watching sergio. that is going to bring rain to new mexico and to arizona as we head through friday. heavier showers working into the texas panhandle on saturday. lynda? the kittens discovered when they fell through the ceiling as a family huddling trying to get out. >> i want you to meet some storm survivors. these are four little kittens. we just discovered them in this home. we talked to the owners of this home and they told us the story of how they rode out the storm. as they were leaving because the ceiling was collapsing on them, these kittens fell out of the ceiling and into the kitchen. they didn't even know that they were alive up there. >> reporter: those kittens now safe at a shelter awaiting adoption. a lone american flag where we saw so much destruction in mexico beach. >> but as we saw with florence, we're seeing there again, there is resilience in the american people that live down there. >> right. people coming together to help and to are there. the scare inside a hospital during the hurricane. doctors working frantically to get the seriously ill to safety. david muir on the scene. and the highly unusual photo-op inside the oval office as president trump hosted kanye west. what the rapper said that drew a reaction from the president. and new york is pretty weird on a normal day, but multiply that by 1,000 during comic con and we're heading to the annual party to find out what drives these diehard fans to dress up. it's friday, october 12th. from abc news, this is "world news now." i think i've seen that joker guy walking around the streets of new york. >> just on a normal tuesday. just normal tuesday. man, just looking at those two pieces of videos back to back, kanye at the white house and comic con next to each other, whoa. it was a circus scene in many places. >> quite a day planned. >> yeah, we do. we will begin with the scene, the utter devastation left behind by hurricane michael. it's now triggering life-threatening flash floods as far north as virginia after ravaging the florida panhandle. >> michael is being blamed for at least six deaths. more than a million homes and businesses are without power and search and rescues are under way for survivors who defied evacuation orders. >> the seaside town of mexico beach is in ruins after taking a direct hit. many homes there barely standing or completely smashed to pieces. emergency crews are struggling to make their way through roads blocked by downed power lines or debris. >> panama city faired a little better. there were reports of looting and hospitals had to evacuate patients. abc's david muir has more. >> reporter: the storm surge in apalachicola taking over streets and homes. in st. joe beach, a family, including a father and son, rescuing neighbors from their roof shortly after the eye of the storm passed. here in panama city, the stunning drone footage revealing a school destroyed. we drove past streets littered with debris, cars smashed, stop lights out. there is no power here. a tractor trailer flipped over on to its side. and then we arrive at bay medical center where we were told there is an urgent effort under way to get the patients out. the most critical are being moved first. the hospital was hit by the hurricane. windows breaking, the power going out, the emergency doors blown in. the wind suddenly racing through the e.r. so you literally put this sign up to let people know they had to go around the building? the doctors taking us through the other entrance describing those hurricane force winds with patients in dire need. >> the wind took a path. when it broke those doors out, it broke these doors out. it made a wind tunnel through the emergency department and we had to physically block off the doors which was actually fairly difficult to do. >> how did you do that? >> we put stretchers up and bars across the doors to keep the doors from flying open. >> reporter: on an upper floor, this cardiologist taking us down the hallway where cardiac patients, some awaiting heart surgery, were there when the hurricane hit. moved away from windows for safety. they had to carry some of the patients down stairwells to safety and they began medevacing the most critical first, including a woman pregnant with twins who they say had gone into premature labor. back in front of the hospital, dr. patel reassuring this wife, her husband awaiting double bypass surgery. >> water everywhere and the building was shaking. the noise was terrifying. >> reporter: all of this playing out as first responders now go through this community knocking on front doors. butch browning is the louisiana state fire marshal. >> as soon as you can get people out of the desolate conditions, the better off that you are. >> so you're literally going to go door to door? >> right. >> search and rescue. >> reporter: we were imbedded with his team. they spent all day looking for possible survivors. many of the homes here with trees on top of them. >> hello? >> reporter: authorities fearing there could still be people trapped inside. >> search and rescue. >> we can only hope they were able to get out ahead of this storm. david muir reporting there from panama city. nearly 1,400,000 people are without power. >> power company officials warn many customers are facing days, possibly weeks before they have electricity again. >> there is a small glimmer of hope today because cleanup crews in some areas will get help from today's forecast. >> accuweather meteorologist julia wyden joins us now. good morning. >> lynda, kendis, good morning. michael has been a very fast-moving storm. in this case it's now moving well out to sea at a very quick pace, but maintaining that tropical storm status even as it moves well off to the north and east and heads over towards europe. wet weather associated with michael is going to be leaving land areas. we'll still see some wet weather throughout parts of massachusetts as we go through the early morning but by the afternoon it should be significantly dryer. blustery winds still going to cause some rip currents and rough seas in the coastal portions of the carolinas, through virginia and up into the delmarva. folks recovering in the panhandle, looking like nice quiet, calm weather. temps in the high 70s to low 80s. now to washington, d.c. where kanye west's v many people expecting the unexpected. pretty much what they got. it left many political observers speechless. reporter: a most unusual day at the white house. >> i love this guy right here. >> reporter: president trump invited the cameras in to the oval office for his meeting with rapper and provocateur kanye west and football great jim brown. west launched into an extended soliloquy about donald trump and his red make america great again hat. >> you know, they tried to scare me to not wear this hat, my own friends, but this hat, it gives me -- it gives me power in a way. it was something about when i put this hat on, it made me feel like superman. you made -- that's my favorite superhero and you made a superman cape for me. >> reporter: the rapper's meandering monologue touched on more than a dozen topics. the president seemed almost at a loss for words. >> i'll tell you what, that was pretty impressive. >> reporter: the meeting capped a frenetic 24 hours for the president that included a bill signing with kid rock and a campaign rally in erie, pennsylvania. >> all those beautiful red hats. make america great again. >> reporter: in spite of all this, the president says he is focused intently on the devastation of hurricane michael. >> do you have enough time to focus on the hurricane. a very busy day at the white house. >> yeah, i do. a very busy day. yesterday i had a tremendous rally in pennsylvania. i wasn't going to disappoint thousands and thousands of people who had been standing in line for in some cases a day and a half. >> the president is scheduled to take part in a campaign rally friday night in ohio and another one saturday in kentucky. the white house says he will go to the hurricane disaster zone as soon as he is able to do so without interfering with recovery efforts, likely early next week. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. >> what a day at the white house there for jonathan karl, who did get a hug from kanye as well. in the meantime, the president's former fixer has made a political change. michael cohen is now a registered democrat. his attorney tweeted cohen is distancing himself from the current administration's values. cohen is awaiting sentencing on charges connected to trump's 2016 presidential run. and wall street has one more day this week to try to recoup its stunning losses. the markets opened this morning with the dow off another 545 points, closing in at above 25,000. it's a two-day loss, about 5%. investors concerned about rising interest rates and trade tensions spread the selloff across the board, dumping shares from technology as well as other industries, including energy companies to health care stocks. and we have more news ahead, including a royal carolina. we'll have more about michael ahead. and here in new york, prosecutors have dropped part of the sexual assault case against harvey weinstein. >> the dismissed count involves allegations made by actress lucia evans stemming from a 2004 encounter. she was one of the first women to publicly accuse weinstein of sexual assault. weinstein is still charged with five felony sex crimes. he has repeatedly denied accusations of nonconsensual sex. the founder of the fyre festival has been sentenced to six years behind bars for orchestrating a $26 million scam. the festival was promoted as an upscale music weekend in the bahamas with ticket prices ranging up to $100,000. people were left stranded without enough food, water or bathrooms. colin kaepernick is now a harvard award winner. >> the former san francisco 49ers quarterback was among eight people honored for their contributions to black history and culture. he hasn't played since 2016, at least for the nfl. the season he began kneeling during the national anthem to protest social injustice. kaepernick is suing the nfl for colluding to keep him out of the league. he said on his instagram he was very honored by it. and beach community and now look at it. almost looking as if a bomb went off. many of the homes just no longer standing. >> another photo from springfield, florida shows a woman walking inside a store in disarray. the store open to the sky with its roof torn off. at tyndall air force base near panama city, an airplane hangar is obliterated. the entire base has catastrophic damage. at least six people have died and rescuers are going door to door searching for survivors. more than 1 million homes and businesses have no power. an early estimate puts the losses caused by michael at least $8 billion. >> and many reporters had to scramble to get to mexico beach by air, land or sea after the storm passed. >> but abc's ginger zee was already on the ground there, hunkered down in a condo as the storm moved in. she ventured out to get a closer look at the aftermath. >> reporter: this is all that's left, homes, entire neighborhoods shredded. >> this is where we rode out the storm. the cement, the pylons did very well. debris still filling the streets. we're going to make the hike out because there is no other way. >> reporter: one of the few buildings still standing, that yellow condo complex where we rode out hurricane michael. as the storm swept in, we were reporting on a balcony across from a blue house. the wind driving us inside and then that moment we'll never forget. >> i just saw something i have never seen in real life. i saw an entire home taken off of its foundation and rolled down the street. >> reporter: moments later, our live broadcast signal cutting out. mexico beach taking a direct hit. when it was possible to venture out again -- >> that is where the house used to be. >> reporter: -- the reality sets in. >> now the home that i saw floating away that used to be standing there, it is no longer. >> reporter: take another look at that image from above. there is the condo where we rode out the storm. across from it where was once a blue house, now only an empty hole. >> the smell of destruction is thick. >> reporter: we set out on foot to see what was left. >> we've now made it about ten blocks and the destruction hasn't ended. >> reporter: a local bulldozer working to clear a path. one man trying to do everything he could. in this wasteland we meet a husband and wife. they stayed behind in their home as the water rushed in. >> you swam out? >> yes. >> out of your home to a boat -- >> yes. >> and that's how you survived? >> yes. >> reporter: they credit a pair of life jackets with keeping them alive. >> the wind is going 120 miles an hour. >> we let the current take us to the next stop and then we'd grab on to a tree. >> reporter: they asked us to try to get word out to their mother that they were okay. finally we got a signal. >> they rode out the entire five hours of the storm. >> my husband and i are just beside ourselves. >> reporter: so many people desperate for news and then we hear from someone else, jenny caputo, who tells us she watched our report and she is the owner of that blue house now gone. >> hello, this is jenny. >> reporter: we reach her by phone in atlanta. >> i can't imagine if it were my home. >> i'm heartbroken. we've only had the house five months. we've been coming to mexico beach for over ten years. >> wow. >> we just love it. we finally bought a place there that we were going to enjoy with our young family now. we'll be back. we will rebuild. we'll come back. we have lots of -- they're just good people there. >> what a good attitude about all of that, that resident there. meteorologist ginger zee reporting from mexico beach. by the way, the florida governor said so many lives have been changed forever. >> and he referred to this hurricane as an absolute monster. abc's david muir brings us a stunning bird's eye view. >> reporter: the scene is unimaginable, the devastation on mexico beach as seen from above. hurricane michael making landfall at 155 miles per hour, and this is what a strong category 4 hurricane will do. >> it's almost impossible to describe the destruction from hurricane michael here on mexico beach. there are some buildings still standing, others are completely destroyed. >> reporter: from the sky, nearly every building we fly over is damaged in some way. the rooftops blown right off of these homes. entire blocks reduced to splintered piles of debris. >> you can see in so many places homes that have been simply swept away. homes sitting in the middle of streets. clearly swept away by the storm surge. >> reporter: there is another view from this drone flying over mexico beach. entire rooftops blocking the streets. the sheer power of michael, nearly a category 5 hurricane, ravaging this coastline community. >> our thanks there to david. the remnants of hurricane michael are still packing a punch before heading offshore. the radar shows the system moving northward where it's expected to bring a few showers later today as far as northern new england. >> the storm is sparking major flooding, flash flooding situations in west virginia. several streets in roanoke are closed, completely swamped by water. now, further north, heavy winds have downed dozens of trees in southern massachusetts leaving a wide path of destruction. >> today's forecast should bring some relief to those in the storm zone. >> let's check in with julia wyden. >> good morning. we're tracking tropical storm michael which is moving very quickly offshore. by 8:00 a.m. should be well out to sea. could strengthen a bit. even as it heads well off to the north and east. wet weather because of michael and a cold front in the northeast this morning across parts of massachusetts and eastern long island. the air continues to dry out as we go on throughout the later morning hours. kendis? lynda? >> it's been summerlike for the mid-atlantic and the northeast for a while. julia, thank you. we're following breaking news in the case of "the washington post" journalist jamal khashoggi.
