incredibly dangerous. >> a good samaritan risks her life to race into a burning home and rescue a victim trapped inside. >> and i dropped my phone right here, and i just -- i just went in. >> good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. it certainly took a lot of courage and some brute strength to get the man out before he was overcome by smoke and flames. >> abc 7 reporter with the story. >> reporter: firefighters wear protective gear to clear this burned antioch apartment on peppertree way but moments earlier samantha saved a man's life with her bare hands. samantha and her family stepped outside around 11:00 to head to the park and that's when she saw smoke. she looked around to see if anybody was responding and when she realized she was the only one there to help she ran across the street. >> the fire's roaring and everything. >> and then she said i can't, she's crying at me, i can't, my roommate, he's paralyzed. he can't get out, i can't get him out, you have to help me. >> samantha ran past the burning stove and kitchen to the bedroom. once she reached 77-year-old lovis burton she grabbed the office chair he was sitting in and pulled. >> i look back in the hallway squ & it's black. >> reporter: she put a robe over burton's face to protect from the smoke. >> obviously incredibly dangerous. >> reporter: the chair cut on the table but samantha yanked it and the two fell out the front door. >> the fire was blowing out of pretty much all front windows as well as that front door. >> reporter: burton reinjured his hip during the rescue. his son says he underwent surgery tonight but he's doing well. >> i'm just happy that he's still alive and he's not hurt from the fire. >> reporter: a brave, quick-thinking neighbor is the reason why. heroics not lost on samantha's husband of ten years. >> oh, i'm amazed by her. she is the most amazing person in the world. >> in antioch katie utehs, abc 7 news. we are learning more tonight about the florida high school shooter. a child welfare report reveals a long list of behavioral disorders. >> at the same time survivors are speaking up demanding gun control laws be stricter. abc's linda lopez wraps up the latest developments. >> reporter: new details are emerging about the young man who authorities say confessed to killing 17 people at this florida high school. classmates who knew him when he was a student there say he was troubled. >> i feel like he was just alone and off. there was something off about him. >> reporter: and now a new and disturbing report from the department of children and family services that says nikolas cruz cut himself in september of 2016, sharing video of his wounds on snapchat and saying he wanted to get a gun. >> every sign that you're asked to look at was there. >> reporter: the dcf report first obtained by the sun sent nell and confirmed to abc news by the public defender also shows crews had a history of autism, adhd, depression, and was on medication, which cruz's public defender tells us he stopped taking. this report the latest in a string of what appeared to be missed warning signs. the fbi never investigated worrisome tips it received last month. and over the past few years the local sheriff says they responded to 20 calls regarding cruz. the high school massacre now sparking a call for less firepower. >> enough is enough. >> reporter: anger and frustration boiling over at this gun safety rally in ft. lauderdale. >> if all our president can do is send thoughts and prayers, then it's time for victims to be the change we need to see. >> reporter: protesters calling on the florida legislature to restrict the sale of guns. >> no one should be able to buy an ar-15. n one. okay? >> reporter: cruz had just turned 18 when he bought his semi-automatic weapon. investigators believe he fired approximately 150 shots in the minutes he was inside the school. linda lopez, abc news, new york. nearly two dozen bay area residents graduated from marjory stoneman douglas high school. many gathering today at baker beach to make a video in support of those back home in florida. >> abc 7 news reporter lisa aminute gulezian spoke with some locke app lums and joins us live in the newsroom. lisa. >> reporter: even high-profile alums are getting involved including oakland a's minor league pitcher jesus lizardo. one of the dead was his mentor and coach. >> and he was a really nice guy. at a baseball game, supporting us, help us out if we're in trouble. >> reporter: a's pitcher jesus lizardo is talking about athletic director chris hixon. hixon tried to help students escape during the deadly shooting. now lizardo has started this you caring fund for hixon's family. >> this is my graduation announcement from class of '99 at marjory stoneman douglas high school. >> reporter: san francisco transplant jennifer blancas admits she's still in shock after wednesday's shooting. >> i feel helpless because i don't understand. i can't normalize it. i can't make sense of it. >> reporter: these are photos from her time at what alumni call msd. her senior portrait, prom pictures, and her drama class. >> it's hard to believe. it's just hard to believe. >> reporter: what's even harder to accept for jennifer's sister and abc 7's own catherine fisher, who's another msd alum, is that assistant football coach aaron feis, who also died, was in her graduating class. >> i was honored to be a part of both the student body, the same year that he was there. i thought he -- he is a true hero. >> reporter: feis played football, while fisher was in the marching band. feis jumped between a student and the shooter. >> it's too close to home. >> reporter: blancas, meantime, who hasn't returned to msd in over a decade, plans to attend her 20-year high school reunion next year, specifically because of what's happened. in san francisco lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> the principal of marjory stoneman douglas high has this message for students and the public. >> i will hug each and every one of you as many times as you need and i will hold you as long as you need me to for all 3,300 of you and your families. and we will get through this together. our community is strong, our students are strong. we will persevere in these trying times. >> the principal in his message also thanked students and staff for what he called heroic efforts. you can make a difference for the victims and the families in florida. this go fund me page has raised more than a million dollars in just two days. we posted the link on our website. go to abc7news.com. the florida high school massacre has led to an ultimatum tonight from a major donor to the republican party. "the new york times" reports al hoffman jr. will not make contributions to groups or candidates that do not support a ban on military-style weapons. the message came through an e-mail sent to several republican leaders including florida governor rick scott. it reportedly said, "i will not write another check unless they all support a ban on assault weapons. enough is enough." well, lebron james and steph curry are responding to controversial comments from fox news host laura ingramm. she said players should stay out of politics and just shut up and dribble. >> we will definitely not shut up and dribble. i will definitely not do that. >> people kind of try to put athletes and black athletes in a box, to say you know, basketball's the only thing that you can provide in this kind of -- i mean obviously very upsetting. >> ingram was responding to a video james released earlier this week where he and warriors' kevin durant were highly critical of president trump. durant, lebron and weather and a live look outside at our emeryville camera. you can't see to be, but it's chilly out there. >> yeah, those temperatures about to take a nose dive. let's get to meteorologist drew tuma on more about this. >> yeah, you know those numbers over the next 24 hours are really going to plummet. it's thanks to a cold front that will be moving through tomorrow. the 60s and 70s we experienced this afternoon will be long gone tomorrow. right,00040s and 50s the name of the game. a bit of a chill in the atmosphere but not frigid by any means. the winds right now right along the coast are beginning to pick up. you can see sfa and half moon bay gusting to 22 and 23 miles per hour respectively. but the dramatic difference that will happen on sunday will be because of those winds. they will gust as much as 40 miles per hour. that's going to pull in colder air, and by the evening wind chills will be in the 30s. with that front moving through there is the chance that a sprinkle could pop up, even some snow on some hilltops. hour by hour future weather, we'll time out the temperatures for you and how long the winter temperatures will last. >> all right, drew, thanks. the cold weather system is expected to bring a few inches of snow over the mountains sunday and into monday. take a look. the national weather service posted this map you see here on facebook, and you can see there a lot of tahoe is expected to get four to six inches with even more snow expected in those yellow areas up at the top. now, snow levels could drop to about 1,000 feet. for the latest on the snow hurt this morning when a car plowed into the front of the a little caesars pizzeria in fremont. this photo from the bay area news group shows what happened. the car ended up inside the restaurant. a contractor working outside the building was pinned between a game machine and the car. he was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. police say the 80-year-old driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00, neighbors becoming crime fighters. >> how san francisco residents are taking matters into their own hands tonight. >> also, the conference started by a bay area high school student that's helping level the playing field for girls in tech. and a cruise ship brawl. what started this all out. neighbors in san francisco are standing together to fight property crime, which has increased dramatically over the last year. abc 7 news reporter elissa harrington has the story. >> reporter: at the base of san francisco's famous tiled steps in the sunset are these signs warning people about car break-ins. the city didn't post these. these are homemade. the work of residents fed up with what they call a lack of leadership. they started their own crime watch called stop crime sf. >> there's a lot of frustration in this city. and so people are banding together to really hold the criminal justice system accountable. every aspect from the police to prosecutors to judges and the politicians. >> reporter: saturday the group invited assembly member phil ting to speak at a community meeting. >> san francisco's getting hit like crazy. >> reporter: ting recently introduced a bill aiming to close loopholes that result in many car break-ins being classified as misdemeanors. >> we can only create the laws or fix the laws and then once the laws are fixed or created then there needs to be -- they nooed need to be implemented. >> there needs to be more community activism. >> reporter: neighbor rachel miller garcia says the warning signs are helping. some residents have installed security cameras. they shared images of car burglars smashing windows in broad daylight. >> they're doing everything from breaking into many tourists' cars in the neighborhood to running up and down our streets and ringing our door bebells toe if someone's home and then breaking in. >> reporter: stop crime sf also follows court cases. members say too many criminals are immediately let back out on the street. the group plans to hold more meetings and attend public hearings on this issue. elissa harrington, abc 7 news. a tech conference today brought together high school girls from around the bay area to inspire them to pursue an education in science and math. abc 7 news was in san francisco, where the girls heard from female tech leaders from some of the most powerful names in tech, including linkedin, netflix and medium. each imparted a powerful message about why there should be more women pursuing a stem education. >> the stem field's like more powered over by males. so yeah. >> you want to get in the game. >> yeah. >> great message. the event was organized by a fremont high school student who wants to close the gender gap in partly to mostly cloudy tonight. temperatures chilly but not frigid just yet. upper 30s to mid 40s your starting temperatures for your sunday morning. but changes are upon us. live doppler 7 along with satellite the past 12 hours you can see a cold front defined very nicely right there, pretty much on the border of oregon and california right now, and this is going to sink through the bay area over the next 24 hours and bring in some colder weather. unfortunately, it doesn't have a lot of moisture associated with it. we really want to see some storms line up, but this is not going to be one of them. however, there is a chance of a sprinkle early in the morning. sunday 8:30 in the morning there's an isolated shower chance mainly along the coast. i think that's the best spot that we could see any wet weather. but what we're watching, later on in the evening future weather showing you by 8:30 we could be tracking a little bit of wintry precipitation, especially in a higher elevations above 1,000 feet and north bay hills and perhaps even in the santa cruz mountains. couldn't be out of the question to see a couple of snowflakes flying. but the bigger story is going to be the blustery winds and the colder temperatures. futuretracker wind gusts, tomorrow morning we get you out the door early in the morning. winds are breezy. generally between 15 and 20 miles per hour. throughout the afternoon they'll start to strengthen. by 2:00 we see those winds over 25 miles per hour and they will strengthen even more later at night. by 8:00, 9:00 at night on sunday we expect those winds gusting over 30 miles per hour. that will just drag in some colder air throughout the day on sunday. highs tomorrow some 15 to perhaps 20 degrees cooler than we were today. no 60s or 70s on the board. it's 40s and 50s to round out the weekend. 54 in san francisco. about 55 in oakland. 57 in san jose. only 53 in santa rosa. but that wind will make it feel much cooler than that. futuretracker wind chill, we rarely break out this map in the bay area but when the winds are blustery and the cold air is moving through, by 8:00 tomorrow night that wind will make it feel like we're in the 30s areawide. even chillier, by monday morning, by 4:00 monday morning that wind chill will feel like the 20s to low 30s. little bit of snow coming our way in the sierra. winter weather advisory in effect. about four to six inches of snow. not a lot. but any fresh powder we can get is much appreciated. some travel delays likely with gusty winds. freeze watch will go into effect peppertree lane in antioch. a neighbor went into a burning home and pulled a 77-year-old man out. the two fell as they exited. he suffered a broken hip and went through surgery but is expected to recover. in san francisco neighbors in the inner sunset are banding together to fight the rise in car break-ins. they've put together their own signs warning people not to leave anything of value in their cars. assemblyman phil ting went to their community meeting today promising to toughen laws that crack down on auto burglaries. new details are coming out about the suspected gunman in the florida high school massacre. a report says the suspect nikolas cruz cut himself in 2016 and shared the video on social media, saying he wanted to get a gun. it also shows cruz had a history of autism, adhd, depression and was on medication. his public defender says he had stopped taking it. now to the russia investigation. after 13 russian nationals and three russian companies are accused of interfering with the 2016 election, president trump tweeted that the indictment vindicates his campaign. >> but that conclusion is premature. and as abc's kenneth mouton tells us, special counsel robert mueller is still hard at work. >> reporter: tonight president trump is claiming vindication in the bombshell indictment of 13 russians accused of meddling in the 2016 election. tweeting "russia started their anti-u.s. campaign in 2014, long before i announced that i would run for president. the results of the election were not impacted. the trump campaign did nothing wrong. no collusion." a white house spokesman going a step further. >> there are two groups that have created chaos more than the russians, and that's the democrats and the mainstream media. >> reporter: still investigators are charging the russians spread fake news on fake social media accounts, and allegedly lured unsuspecting americans to campaign-style rallies like this one in florida three months before the election. >> the defendants allegedly conducted what they called information warfare against the united states. >> reporter: and now a superpower war of words. >> and as you can see with the fbi indictment the evidence is now really incontrovertible. >> reporter: president trump's national security adviser at a security conference in germany. the russians in the same room. fighting back. their foreign minister saying until we see the facts everything else is just blabber. while this latest indictment does not mention collusion between the russians and the trump campaign, it's just one piece of the broader mueller investigation. the probe is also looking into the 2016 trump tower meeting between donald trump jr., jared kushner, paul manafort, and a russian lawyer. and there's a possible obstruction of justice investigation. >> just because this indictment has no mention of collusion or of knowing participation by americans doesn't mean it isn't going to happen in the next indictment. >> that was kenneth mouton reporting. well, moving on now, what was supposed to be a relaxing cruise in the south pacific turned into a violent nightmare for some passengers. all of this after vicious brawls broke out over the course of several days on board. the carnival legend set sale from melbourne, australia but had to return to port after several days of fistfights. the brawls, anymore. >> reporter: jaime's dance school starting a social media movement called orange ribbons for jaime to honor her memory, and responses are pouring in from all over the world. we dance for finland. this group of teens joining hands before a dress rehearsal. and even a salute from the professionals. the american ballet theater honoring jaime at their performance tonight. their caption
