on his way back from that interview. >> yeah, it's good to see he's sitting down taking those questions. we have a lot of other news to get to, starting with that high-stakes battle over the classified republican memo that criticizes the fbi and the justice department over the russia investigation. president trump wants it released to the public. the fbi has questions about its accuracy and the compromising of classified information. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has all the latest on the showdown. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. that memo is here at the white house and despite that warning from the fbi, sources here tell us the president is still expected to release it. as soon as today president trump's showdown with his own fbi director could come to a head if he releases that controversial classified memo accusing the justice department of political bias. the microphones catching the president's pledge to a republican congressman. >> let's release the memo. >> oh, yeah, don't worry, 100%. >> reporter: and chief of staff john kelly promising the same. >> it'll be released here pretty quick i think and the whole world can see it. >> reporter: but in an extraordinary public clash with the white house, the fbi warned against releasing that memo saying officials only had a limited chance to review it and, quote, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy. republicans on the house intelligence committee wrote the four-page memo and sources tell abc news it alleges the justice department acted inappropriately when it obtained a surveillance warrant to spy on a trump campaign adviser suspected of being a russian agent. while some republicans say the memo casts a shadow over the integrity of the russia investigation, democrats are outraged. >> this is the president of the united states acting to defend himself legally and politically at the expense of our national security. >> reporter: and now this morning, new allegations of president trump demanding yet another loyalty pledge from a top law enforcement official involved in that russia probe. this was the man overseeing the special counsel inquiry, deputy attorney rod rosenstein testifying before congressional investigators in december. >> nobody asked me to take a loyalty pledge other than the oath of office. >> reporter: but a source tells abc news the president recently asked if rosenstein was "on his team" and wanted to know about the direction of the russia probe. questions catching rosenstein by surprise. and this appears to be the third loyalty pledge asked by president trump, of course, there was former fbi director james comey, sources tell us the president also asked former acting director andrew mccabe how he voted in 2016. george, you know this, the big question right now, will the current fbi director stay on the job if president trump in fact goes around him and still releasing this memo, the departure of a second fbi director would be an astounding development. >> it would be extraordinary. meanwhile, it comes with this memo being right in the middle of all these questions. there are now questions about whether the house intelligence committee actually worked with the white house in preparing the memo. >> reporter: yeah, george, in a committee hearing the top republican, the chairman was asked point-blank if anyone on his staff worked with the white house and he refused to answer that question. but this morning, the top democrat on that who is accusing chairman nunes of secretly altering that memo before sending it to the white house. nunes' team say they were minor edits. >> okay, cecilia, thanks very much. robin. george, also new questions about hope hicks and the russia investigation. the president's communications director facing new scrutiny over comments she may have made about that trump tower meeting with russians. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is here with more. good morning, pierre. >> robin, good morning. explosive new allegations from the one-time spokesman for the trump legal team putting him at direct conflict with the white house. this morning, white house communications director hope hicks under fire. at issue that controversial statement written by don junior about the reason for the infamous trump tower meeting with a group of russians during the summer of 2016. don junior released a statement saying the meeting was primarily about russian adoptions but we later learned that the meeting was for the trump campaign to receive dirt about hillary clinton from vladimir putin to help trump win the election. hope hicks and other white house advisers, along with the president, decided to help don junior write a response while on board air force one during a flight back from the g20 summit after learning that "the new york times" knew about the trump tower meeting. abc news has learned that mark corallo at the time, the spokesman for the trump legal team, became concerned about the statement's misleading nature. this morning, "the new york times" is reporting about a tense conversation with hope hicks in which corallo alleges hicks knew the real reason for the trump tower meeting, i.e., to get dirt on hillary clinton. and told him that it would never get out. corallo was apparently concerned that the misleading statement would create the perception of obstruction of justice. after corallo's concerns about obstruction were published in that new book by michael wolff, abc news first learned that the special counsel contacted corallo for an interview, but a lawyer for hicks released a statement to "the new york times" flatly denying corallo's account. as always the key question, what did the president know and when did he know it? >> just one of so many questions, pierre, thank you. >> and that's one of the questions robert mueller is looking at. let's talk to dan abrams about this right now. so you've got this meeting on air force one, the president is there. hope hicks, one of his closest aides is there. don trump jr. on the phone. it turns out to be a misleading statement. so the big question there is, would the president being involved in basically lying to the public be part of an obstruction of justice case? >> it could be. certainly any lies can be part of an obstruction case, right. when you're putting together possible obstruction and different pieces and lies become part of those pieces, but, remember, in the case of bill clinton, when ken starr recommended the articles of impeachment, one of them was strictly based on lying to the public. now, i don't think that would be the case here just a lie in and of itself. >> but one piece. >> but it becomes an important piece in the puzzle if true. >> let's talk about the >> let's talk about the showdown between the fbi and the white house right now. at the heart of it, the dossier, which implicated -- excuse me, that was used in this -- right now i got a little confused. the dossier the republicans are saying is biased and that's why it shouldn't have been used to get scrutiny of carter page, the trump campaign -- >> and they're saying it was paid for. part of their argument it was paid for by the clinton campaign and therefore it can't be trusted. let's take this out of the politics and bring it into the law for a minute. which is, let's assume for a minute that that dossier was used. let's assume that was part of the reason they were able to get a warrant. as a legal matter this happens every day. every day there are snitches and criminals and thieves and people with agendas who provide information that is used to get warrants in this country. that's just not unusual. so, for this to have any real bite, they're going to have to be able to show it was basically entirely this dossier, which is what led them to get the warrant and, b, they'll have to be able to show that there was political motivation, not just on the part of the people paying for it, but on the part of the people who were requesting the information in some way, shape or form and i think that's going to be very hard. >> pierre, you've been covering the justice department an awful long time. this showdown between the fbi and the white house is extraordinary. >> it is. think about yesterday. the fbi put out this unusual statement in which the fbi director and his team were trying to point out, number one, the house republicans, your report is crap. it's nothing. it's not based on any good, sound information. number two, he was telling the president of the united states, i disagree with what you're about to do. it's the first sign that's trying to signal independence and we'll see how it turns out, george. >> the memo also critical of rod rosenstein is reportedly asked about a loyalty pledge from the president, and would the report become the basis for the firing of rod rosenstein? >> that would be monumental. remember, rod rosenstein is the one thing standing between robert mueller and a job right now. and if rod rosenstein is gone, many believe that the next person to have that position would be someone who would be very willing and ready to fire robert mueller. so, if you view rosenstein as a piece of the mueller investigation, it's a critical question. >> dan abrams, pierre thomas, thanks very much. now to those storms on the move bringing snow to the east and the arctic plunge moving into the midwest just in time for the super bowl. ginger, windchills expected to drop below zero in minneapolis. >> well below zero. minneapolis is going to show off and show the world what they can do cold and snowwise after a nearly snowless start to the season, they're catching up, the month of january has been good to them and that snow drought, you can see a couple inches fell between yesterday and today. now that has virginia. more than 100 republican lawmakers were on board when the train collided with a garbage truck. several lawmakers with mds scrambled to help the injured and the ntsb is now investigating. abc's linzie janis is on the scene in crozet, virginia. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you can see that devastating crash scene behind me. that garbage truck split in two. trash everywhere. some of those lawmakers who were also medical professionals jumped into action to help the injured but they were unable to save one man. this morning, authorities identifying 28-year-old christopher foley as the man who died in the deadly train crash in virginia. >> mass casualty incident, level one, train versus truck. >> reporter: the train packed with more than 100 lawmakers. their staffers and families traveling from washington to a gop retreat at the greenbrier resort in st slammed into a garbage truck. foley was a passenger on that truck. >> boom, jarring type of sound and feeling. strange. almost like an explosion. >> we are transporting another critical to a helicopter right now. >> reporter: a group of lawmakers who are also doctors scrambling to help the injured. >> i got blood on my shirt. forgive me. i did cpr and it didn't look good for him but the other gentleman we were able to keep a pulse. >> reporter: senators jeff flake and bill cassidy helping those rendering medical aid carrying this passenger on a stretcher. the scene eerily familiar to those who were there at that republican baseball practice in june. >> i thought i never want to experience a day like this again and, unfortunately, it came too soon. >> reporter: in total six people, including minnesota congressman jason lewis who suffered a concussion, were sent to the hospital. this morning, one person in critical condition. the ntsb is trying to figure out why that truck was on the tracks despite there being crossing gates here. they expect to recover two data recorders from the train. as for those lawmakers they are now on their retreat. they began with a prayer for the victims. robin. >> and we pray, as well. all right, linzie, thank you. let's go now to new concerns about what's become the worst flu season in years. a consulting firm estimates the virus could lead to $9.4 billion in lost productivity as a million americans miss at least four days of work. abc's linsey davis here with the latest. the number of cases just keeps growing. >> they certainly do. good morning to you, george. using data from smart thermometers, the health tech company has been tracking the spread of it since january until now and you can see the map grows red to illustrate how many are sick, up 23% from last week to this week alone. the data suggests more than 16 million people, or 5% of the population, might be infected. this morning, health officials confirm several more child flu deaths across the united states. including 15-year-old kira molina of georgia. >> on january 30th at 7:07 a.m., ms. molina succumbed to liver failure due to the flu. >> reporter: and 5-year-old eli snook died due to complications from the virus. he had been experiencing flu-like symptoms for two weeks, even briefly returning to school before taking a turn for the worse. >> school called me and said that he had 101-degree fever. >> reporter: cases are also being reported in new jersey. a 4-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy in california both now confirmed to have died from the flu. this, as doctors in clinics across the country try to stave off what officials say is one of the worst flu seasons in nearly a decade. offering free flu shots at this clinic in florida. in new york, this doctor tells us the rapid test used to quickly diagnose flu, they're in short supply. >> if somebody feels they're getting sick they should be able to see a doctor and they don't need a test to be treated. >> reporter: in new hampshire, 38-year-old mother of four amanda franks chose to forgo taking the prescribed antiviral medication after she was diagnosed with the flu because she was worried about side effects. >> she was just getting rest and fluids and doing everything that she thought was right. >> reporter: two days later she got sicker and died on her way to the hospital. and while side effects of tamiflu can include headache, nausea and vomiting, health officials say serious side effects are rare and it's proven to be effective and that heart-wrenching story with that mom but planning to take her by helicopter to the hospital, but weather grounded the helicopter and then she died on the way to the hospital. >> thank you, linsey. counting down to the super bowl now, it's just three days away, minneapolis is tightening up security. t.j. with a bird's-eye view of how the city is preparing. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. we have thousands of officers on the ground trying to protect the people in minneapolis, but you got six of these babies that are going to be in the air. u.s. customs and border protections air and marine unit which is normally having the job of keeping illegal things out of the country, well, they have the job of making sure everything stays out of a particular 32-mile radius around u.s. bank stadium on sunday. while 100 million people watch the big game, these guys will watch the skies above it. customs and border protections air and marine unit patrolling in blackhawks will intercept any aircraft that flies too close to u.s. bank stadium during the super bowl. >> we want to keep the american people safe, right? we want viewers to enjoy the day, relax, and have the state of mind that somebody is out there watching potential targets. >> reporter: that's just one layer of security for the super bowl. a level one national security event, the highest designation, homeland security secretary kristen nielsen came to town to get an update. on security preps. >> we have no credible or specific information that we're actively monitoring so, we're talking to our international partner, state, local and all federal assets to make sure it will be a safe and secure, fun day. >> well, you have all this coordination, all these agencies, helicopters that will be in the air. everybody concerned about security, but you know what, guys, one of the biggest security concerns they have, the weather. yes, you heard ginger talking about it. but as i speak to you this morning, it's 2 below here in minneapolis. that causes some special concerns about even moving people around, getting around traffic, but for the helicopters, they love it. they said it's good for their aircraft to actually be in that cold air so it's at least good for somebody. >> good for somebody. glad they're benefiting we begin this half hour with the exclusive with logan paul, the youtube star, superstar who has millions of young followers and has made millions with his zany videos online and recently came under fire for showing the body a person who took their own life. now he's sitting down with michael for his first interview, first tv interview since that decision. >> it's been tough. because ironically i'm being told to commit suicide myself which -- >> really. >> millions of people literally telling me they hate me to go die in a fire. the most horrible horrific things. >> you don't feel like the criticism is fair. >> that's -- that's the thing. i do. >> reporter: this is the logan paul his fans have never seen before. one month ago the social media superstar with over 16 million youtube subscribers was at the top of his game, breaking records with his wild viral videos. >> hit myself in the face again. >> reporter: that is until he posted a clip from his visit to japan's so-called suicide forest, what happened next would change his life forever. in an instant he was met with fierce backlash. what made you decide to go to this forest? >> the idea was do another fun vlog. go camp for a night and make an entertaining piece of content in a forest and things obviously changed pretty drastically and quickly. >> the group came across an actual suicide victim. >> so it was 100 yards away from the parking lot. it doesn't make any sense. and i believe it happened for a reason and i think that reason is so i could take this experience, learn from it, spread the message the right way about suicide prevention and suicide prevention awareness. >> and so did you know -- let's fast forward. so you go in. you film it and you film it. then you edit it and then you put it out there for the world to see. >> yeah. >> was there a point when you said, hmm, maybe this is not a good decision? maybe i should not show that? >> yeah, yeah, the idea was to shock and show the harsh realities of suicide and get people talking about something that i don't think people are talking about much and still that's the goal today. >> and you have 16 million followers, which is amazing amount, amazing amount of influence that you have. my kids, my kids know who you are. when you put out content like that, do you realize the age of your audience? >> it's odd because, michael, i'm 22. it's not like i'm making content necessarily for kids. sometimes i cuss. sometimes i make inappropriate jokes. i want to make jokes that kids my age are going to like. i have my own demographic. now i will say i'm much more aware of the impact that my actions have on myself and others. >> for parents out there, because, you know, as a father of 13-year-old twin girls it's very hard to know everything your kids watch and there are a lot of parents. >> a lot of parents. >> who were saying, you know what, i heard about logan paul, i didn't really know who he was until this happened. who are really going to monitor their kids now. what would you like to say to them. >> i'm going to be honest with you, michael, i think -- i think parents should be monitoring what their children are watching more. i -- every parent i meet, whose kids are under the age of like 12, i go, hey, you let your kids watch my stuff and they go, yeah, what am i going to do? but at the same time, it's not like i'm a bad guy. i am a good guy who made a bad decision. >> google preferred dropped you from their service. >> yeah. >> do you think that was fair of them to do? >> i understand that they needed to take a stance and while i don't necessarily maybe agree with it, i do respect it. i do respect it. >> how does that affect your bottom line? >> want to know the real answer? >> yeah, of course. >> it hurts, but it's not like i'm drowning. it's -- i don't -- i try not to live my life thinking about money because money doesn't make me happy. creating and making other people happy makes me happy. creating content to make people smile and laugh is what makes me happy. >> so you did the suicide be here tomorrow so what was that project about? [ applause ] we've been looking at what it takes to nurture and support strong and powerful women and deborah roberts taking a lead. you had a fascinating conversation with a group of college age women. >> i sure did, george. this was fascinating for me as a mom of a college freshman to hear how young women are processing this new reality. in the case, women who are just beginning to own their womanhood. i sat down with seven 18-year-olds to 22-year-olds to talk about everything from the me too movement to the time's up movement and their own dating experiences and relationships with men and how they're navigating a changing world where they're getting a much bigger voice. show of hands, how many of you would say you feel like you're a strong woman? >> yes. >> definitely. >> all of you. > what is being a strong woman mean? >> i feel like in today's society like women, themselves, are bringing themselves up instead of putting each other down. >> reporter: at miami-dade college seven 18 to 22-year-old women give me insight on their biggest influencers. >> my mom is a single parent so she's always been her. i look up to her. she's done everything. she's gone above and beyond for me. >> reporter: when you hear the word empowering, what does that mean to you, lila? >> i think to me you feel like nothing can compromise you or your situation and you're strong and firm in yourself. >> reporter: with their parents and adolescent psychologist jamie howard watching, i asked for one word that describes a good woman. >> confident. encouraging. empathy. honest, genuine and compassion. >> i say compassion because i think you need to be aware of other people. >> how about you, gabby? what did you write? >> confident. society for a very long time is that we're supposed to be silent and submissive. >> reporter: one in five undergrad women experience sexual assault and more than 90% don't report it. but with the me too and time's up movements, this generation could change. how do you differentiate between some of these cases when you're talking about harvey weinstein, and then you're talking about somebody who is maybe clumsily saying something, or maybe a dating situation. >> we have to be wary of having a zero tolerance policy. there are different degrees of sexual harassment, from rape to hand on the shoulder are different. >> reporter: the young women seem troubled by the report involving aziz ansari when a woman called him out on social media saying he was sexually demanding on a date in 2017. >> i don't think that's 100% fair. if she's kind of taking a situation that she also took part in and at that time was like, okay, well, there's -- i gave consent for it and it wasn't an issue, maybe now she -- i don't know -- >> yeah, not on social media. >> i kind of disagree. i don't think that it should be posted on social media but there is a responsibility on definitely both sides for communication and that's where the problem lies. >> reporter: then their parents and dr. howard join us. >> i know she was mature but i didn't know she was that mature. >> as a single mom i tried really, really hard to make sure she didn't always see me struggle, so that her life was a lot easier. >> reporter: but the world of dating is rarely easy. so, dr. howard cautions the young women for any bad situation. >> what will i do? what will i say? what are the words i can use and have a specific script in mind? when it comes to more blatant sexual assault the onus is really on men, that's what we've been talking about. >> is this a new feminist revolution or too early to say that? >> i hope so. maybe too early to say but certainly this generation of women is talking about things that previous generations were sort of afraid to talk about. it was taboo and it's not anymore and that tends to be the stuff that makes big change. >> impressive, gals. they are definitely talking a lot these days about what is acceptable behavior, what's not acceptable, and in moments of honesty some even willing to share their own missteps when talking about the desire to be with men who are respectful and good guys, some of the women confess that they're often attracted to the guys who aren't, "the bad boys," who may not treat them as well and admit that as women, george, that they need to sort of own this and sort of feel that they are worthy of somebody who treats them well. >> and they seem like they're starting to do that and saw dr. jamie howard who is a clinical psychologist joining us, as well. let's talk about that. how do you get young women to want to build a good healthy relationship with a man they can trust. >> so, young women tend to be attracted to men with status, power, sort of athleticism, good looks and so they put up with mean behavior in order to sort of keep that, but we need to have these young women thinking of themselves as equals. that can reduce mystery and intimidation and they can be more assertive and communicate directly and be willing to walk away if someone doesn't treat them the way they want to be treated. >> and we saw it there how important it is to have this conversation with others. >> yes, absolutely. i was impressed about how they supported one another. they talked about encouraging one another and they were very different from one another, yet, they were respectful and gave everyone a chance to speak. i was really encouraged by that. >> they had just met and from different background, some are single-parent families, some have both parents involved, and maybe some had parents not that involved but they're finding people they can speak with, and they can talk with about these things. >> what about us as parents? you're a little ahead of me. i have them in high school and below. how do we prepare them for those moments when they're going to be away? >> mental rehearsal is one of the most important things. have a plan in mind. so run through various scenarios like you're going to be offered alcohol in college. like, how much do you want to drink? shots are probably not a good idea. a lot of young women are doing shots these days when they get to college and the problem is you're impaired and all your good judgment goes out the window. the other thing is dating, what is safe behavior? how can you be assertive? what words can you specifically use like give them really specific things they can do to keep themselves safe. >> start the conversation when? >> start it when they're young, you know, and then so you're just continuing to have this conversation as they get older. >> and what i liked you said to have a plan, to be thinking about what they want to do when they go out. how should i react? it is really a very fast dog. congrats, abbey, on your speed. i feel like that's a world record. please do put your "gma" moment on my facebook page and we can share your pet, your child or your friend with the world. all right, for now a che good morning i'm meteorologist mike nicco from abc 7 mornings. stagnant pattern but the air remains claim and it's going to get warmer this weekend with clean air and record highs possible. lasting the first two weeks of the month. mid upper 60s in the coast and into the bay and santa cruz 72, tonight mid to upper 40s most neighborhoods, low to mid all right. we have a "gma" health alert for you about coffee and cancer. shops in california may soon be forced to post the sign warning customers about a possible link between the two and dr. jen, explain it to us. >> the pendulum keeps swinging. back and forth. this is really about a chemical compound called acrylamide. it is not an ingredient. it's not a contaminant. it forms when coffee beans are roasted at high temperatures and by the way, it's not just coffee. it's in toast, particularly burnt toast. it's in french fries, it's in other foods and like anything else that potentially could be cancer-causing it's about frequency and dose in small amounts, we're exposed to it. it doesn't generally do any harm. in higher amounts that could be a concern. >> people watching at home right now, this is their go-to. >> it's my go-to. i think overwhelmingly the data supports massive health benefits to coffee that we have known for decades. among other things, coffee consumption has been shown to reduce the risk of parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers like liver, uterine, skin cancer and, listen, it's like anything risk versus benefit. we did reach out to the national coffee association, they gave us this statement. coffee has been shown over and over again to be a healthy beverage. the u.s. government's own dietary guidelines state that coffee can be part of a healthy lifestyle and i agree with that. >> so, what's your bottom line? >> i think we have to put it into context. we hear cancer and it can be paralyzing. we can't live our lives in a plastic bubble. if you get on an airplane to take a flight you're exposed to radiation. you go outside you're exposed to sun, that's a carcinogen. the world health organization actually removed coffee from a list of possible cancer-causing compounds. so we have to put this in context and live a healthy lifestyle. most things in moderation and try not to be paralyzed with fear that every single thing you do because it's about the sum total, not just one thing. >> okay, and drink more water. >> that's our thing. >> tomorrow we're going to be talking about it, our water challenge. >> our water challenge for february. we're going to do that.
