niagara falls frozen over. that's niagara falls. of course, the cold is dangerous, it's relentless, the temperatures forcing schools across the midwest and northeast to close this morning and alex perez is in icy chicago for us this morning. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. this deep freeze has had a tight grip for many days now. take a look. you can see the steam rising from lake michigan here in this cold. it takes just a few minutes outside for it to become very dangerous. the new year off to a brutally cold start. subzero temps cold enough to freeze part of the atlantic ocean off the coast of delaware. and creating dangerous driving conditions. this vehicle crashing into icy waters in connecticut. in indianapolis, a woman rescued from the top of her car after it sank ten feet into an icy pond. >> report of an suv fully submerged. >> reporter: she's now in critical condition. in texas, a police officer slipping on a frozen highway nearly hit by an oncoming car and a whiteout in michigan leading to this multi-car pileup. in st. paul, minnesota, ten people rushed to the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning believed to be caused by a faulty boiler. the bitter cold conditions impossible for battling fires. in nebraska, negative 10 degree temperatures instantly turning the spray into ice. firefighters in d.c. forced to use flares to thaw their extension ladders. and we want to give you an idea of just how cold it is outside. this is a hard boiled egg. we left it out overnight and take a look. this is a nail right here, and you can see it's frozen solid. you can use it almost as a hammer. that's just how cold it is outside. officials say if you don't have to be outside, don't. stay inside. robin. >> wow. thank you. ginger, this cold is not going away any time soon and there is another storm on the way. >> yes and it's how prolonged the cold has been. so many of us subfreezing or subzero in some spots since christmas day. look how deep the cold goes. midland, texas, 18, all the way to the gulf coast, louisiana, look at this frozen fountain. that gives you the picture of just how cold it is and how far this reaches but, yes, that next storm, robin, starts tonight through tomorrow and there are winter storm watches that begin in florida. lake city, florida, all the way up the coast, charleston and wilmington included there. it's an ocean storm but the proximity to how close it gets to the coast is going to depend -- help you depend on how much snow you'll end up getting. i can promise you wind, snow and ice, coastal north and south carolina through the mid-atlantic wednesday into thursday. again eastern massachusetts, rhode island and, of course, parts of connecticut going to pick up some of the heaviest snow totals but we have to watch this thing because every ten miles is going to make a huge difference, robin and george. >> there's just no relief. >> no. we're going to move on now to that nationwide computer outage that's caused trouble at airports all across the country. look at these lines at customs at the end of the holiday travel rush and abc's david kerley is at dulles airport with the latest. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. the latest wave of arrivals coming in now from customs. less than 12 hours ago, at airports across the country, a rude welcoming to the new year for travelers who those customs computers went down, and lines and waits got long. the lines grew long from miami to seattle when those computers went down. >> angry, tired. frustrated. >> worst airport ever. terrible. >> reporter: those customs kiosks not working according to some passengers. >> nobody seems to know what's going on. >> reporter: meaning all international travelers coming into the u.s., many returning home, had to get in line, thousands of them and that's why those lines grew so long. >> by the time we arrived they said for two hours the system was down so hundreds of people were just waiting and waiting. >> reporter: the two-hour outage started at 7:30 last night. a customs and border protection spokesperson saying officers had to use backup procedures to screen all those arriving from overseas. the outage coming on new year's day. a day with heightened security. >> i would hope, i mean being from u.s. they will have a backup plan when something like that goes wrong. >> reporter: in a statement the agency says the officers were able to access national security databases and process travelers, quote, as quickly as possible while maintaining the highest levels of security. >> the frustrating thing was that nobody told us anything, why we were waiting. >> reporter: customs and border protection says it has no reason to believe something malicious caused its processing system to shut down. but this is not the first time this has happened. customs and border protection has not told us whether last night's shutdown was related to the earlier ones. we're still waiting for word on that, george. >> but thank goodness they're able to solve it. okay, david, thanks very much. turning to that new threat from north korea. its leader sending a mixed new year's message claiming he has a nuclear button on his desk with the entire u.s. in range, but also opening the door to dialogue with south korea. martha raddatz is tracking the latest from washington. how is the u.s. responding this morning? >> reporter: good morning, robin. president trump who has in the past talked of fire and fury had an uncharacteristically muted response saying simply we'll see but trump is well aware of north korea's nuclear capabilities and while kim jong-un may not have an actual nuclear button sitting on his desk, north korea's ability to hit the u.s. with a nuclear weapon increases every day. i spoke to the former chairman of the joint chiefs admiral mike mullen on "this week" who said he believes we are closer to a nuclear war with north korea than we have ever been, robin. >> kim also going on to say that they may talk with south korean delegation about possibly sending a team to the olympics? >> reporter: exactly, and south korea says this morning that by proposing high-level talks with north korea next week there on the border, they'll meet with them, they say they share that border and talk about whether north korea could be part of the winter olympics next month. south korea has been uncomfortable with donald trump's fiery rhetoric and wants to ease tensions, but that could dilute trump's message of force and his insistence that north korea give up its nuclear program before any talks could be held but, robin, there is little doubt this will be president trump's number one foreign policy challenge this year. >> little doubt. all right. martha, thank you. >> could be driving a wedge between the u.s. and south korea. overseas deadly protests in iran overnight. sixth straight day of clashes between security forces and anti-government protesters who have drawn support from president trump. our chief foreign correspondent terry moran is tracking the latest from london. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. these are stunning developments in iran, a nemesis of the u.s. for decades, a major sponsor of terrorism and unrest throughout the middle east now being rocked with the biggest protest there in almost a decade and they're spreading. overnight, nine more were killed in clashes with police according to iranian state television. the death toll is now at least 20 since those protests began last thursday and on social media we're seeing extraordinary scenes in this tightly controlled country, burning buildings and cars, broken windows, crowds refusing to disperse. these protests began with economic demands but as they spread, some of the streets are now calling for the downfall of the regime itself and in response, a hard line. iran's supreme leader this morning accused, quote, enemies of iran of fomenting unrest while president trump, as you say, has tweeted his support for the protests declaring, quote, it is time for change in iran. >> any sense of how serious the threat to the regime this is, terry? >> reporter: well, the sense right now is that they are responding in such a hard line way, they are frightened. we're hearing while they're spreading geographically they're not enormous. you aren't seeing hundreds of thousands or millions on the street yet. >> okay, terry moran, thanks very much. george, president trump is facing those tensions in north korea and iran as he prepares for the year ahead returning to washington last night and now setting the agenda for 2018. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega is there in washington and, cecilia, what's topping the president's to do list? >> reporter: he's feeling good coming into 2018 fresh off that tax victory. at the end of the week he'll meet with mitch mcconnell and paul ryan to map out the year's legislative agenda. so right out of the gate they want to tackle infrastructure. we're told the president is pushing for at minimum a $200 billion program to fix things like the nation's roads and airports. the president has called infrastructure the easiest of all to achieve. also on this to do list, welfare reform. the president wants to overhaul the welfare system and, of course, they have this issue with daca still, those undocumented immigrants who came to the country as young children. robin, all of this as those midterms are right around the corner, republicans really looking to keep their hold here in washington. >> midterm will be here before we know it. thank you. >> let's get more from matthew dowd and, matthew, we heard some of the items on president trump's agenda right there but there's also so much unfinished business from last year, all the spending bills left over from last year, the children's health insurance program. they got the tax bill passed at the end of the year, put up a lot of tough decisions for january. >> yeah, absolutely. they have a whole bunch of things that need to get done not only politically but for the country as a whole as we have seen in the "planes, trains and automobiles." the difficulty the republicans face is they're in a very bad year. akin to jacksonville playing in the sun and then having to play up in buffalo in the winter. they're moving into the winter in 2018. their margin in the senate as of tomorrow goes from four to two and there's a democratic wave building in the course of 2018, so though the needs are great the opportunities are few in an election year like a midterm with the democrats doing well. >> it would suggest with just a one-vote margin in the senate the only real option to get anything done is bipartisanship but that is going to be so difficult given the stand that president trump has taken, especially on that border wall. >> i think there's a huge opportunity for the president to demonstrate like he did on the debt ceiling when he compromised with nancy pelosi and chuck schumer where his numbers actually went up but the problem is, the more he compromises the more he makes republicans vulnerable in their own primaries so it helps in a general election, but it hurts in a primary and now the democrats have no incentive with this wave as i say building to not surf that wave and try to obstruct everything that the president wants to do. >> challenging year ahead. matt dowd, thanks very much. now to the investigation into that vacation tragedy this costa rica. a charter plane crashing killing all 12 people on board including two american families. federal investigators are on the scene this morning and abc's gio benitez is here with the latest. this is an unbelievably tragic accident. >> unbelievable, robin. good morning to you, a sad one. the families were on vacation, before that plane crashed into a wooded area leaving no survivors. >> reporter: this morning, investigators search for clues on what caused the accident that took ten american lives, including two families on vacation and a tour guide. irene steinberg was on vacation with her husband bruce and three sons, william, zachary and matthew, the close-knit family loved to travel the world together. >> i have to tell you the only comfort from talking to our other friends is that they were all together and they will be together. they'll be together forever. >> reporter: according to a witness the plane was in the air about a minute after takeoff before it seemed to do a cartwheel then a nosedive. hanna weiss was one of those victims, a sophomore at columbia university traveling with her parents and her 16-year-old brother. her friend telling us she will be greatly missed. >> not having her in our lives is going to be just -- it's unfathomable. >> reporter: 33-year-old amanda geisler was in her first year as a personal vacation leader for back roads. her family said in a statement she lived her life with no regrets. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: the small plane crashing just minutes after takeoff on new year's eve. the cause still a mystery but officials now say wind may have played a role. abc news learning the aircraft was operated by the local airline nature air and was similar in size to this one. it's the largest carrier in costa rica and has a good safety record. the faa finding that costa rica upholds strict safety standards, ones almost as high as the u.s. but experts warn to be cautious when flying with smaller carriers you're not familiar with, especially in foreign countries. and they say don't be afraid to cancel if anything appears unsafe, including ominous weather. and the airline could not be reached for comment but the touring company tells abc news they're extremely heartbroken and working with the local authorities to understand the cause of the crash. >> everybody wants to know that. you know, people on vacation want to take these types of flights. what are other things they can do to stay safe? >> experts told us you need to look for these planes with multiple engines and look for them with multiple pilots and those pilots should be seasoned pilots with at least 2,000 hours, flight hours in that area. >> all right. gio, thanks. >> such a sad story. we're going to switch gears now, big change for miss america. former winner gretchen carlson who led the charge against sexual harassment at fox news has been chosen to chair the pageant after its own harassment scandal becoming the first miss america to lead the organization. abc's linsey davis with the story. good morning, linsey. >> good morning, george. i can't sing so i'll spare you, but here she is, miss america's new chairman, gretchen carlson. in 1989 she was crowned miss america, this morning not only does she have a new crown but she's making history. ♪ miss america >> reporter: for the first time ever, a woman is in charge of the miss america organization. >> miss america is gretchen carlson. >> reporter: former fox news anchor and miss america 1989 gretchen carlson, confirmed her new role with this tweet saying, honored to move this iconic program forward with so many amazing volunteers. the historic new role for carlson comes on the heels of former ceo sam haskell's resignation over leaked e-mails exposing alleged crude, sexist and derogatory comments about contestants and winners. the fallout for the 96-year-old pageant has been significant with several key board members resigning as well. 2013 miss america mallory hagan targeted by haskell for her weight and love life spoke out on "good morning america." >> so i really think this is an opportunity to see how women can come together, support each other, rise up, take over the things that they want to see happen and move forward. >> reporter: in an open letter 50 former winners spoke out about the culture of abuse at miss america and demanded that haskell step down. carlson is no stranger to this culture of abuse, saying she experienced it firsthand at fox news. >> you fear you're not going to be believed. you'll lose your job. >> reporter: before the #metoo movement, carlson went public famously about allegations of sexual harassment at fox news and later settled a lawsuit for $20 million against then-fox news ceo, roger ailes. in addition to carlson's new title three former miss americas are now joining the board so quite a makeover from top to bottom. >> smart choice, thanks, linsey. did you see this stunning time's up is also urging women to wear black to next sunday's golden globes and use red carpet interviews to speak out against sexual harassment as well as gender and racial inequality in hollywood and organizers say they have already heard of male actors who plan to do the same which is a pretty cool united way to confront this. >> getting involved and so, amy, we'll talk to two of the founders of time's up, they're joining us exclusively. attorney nina shaw and tina tchen who helped spearhead and was chief of staff of former first lady michelle obama. thank you both so much for being with us. nina, let me start with you. >> good morning. >> good morning. tell us how this group came together. >> i would like to say that we're outrage funneled into action. you have a group of women all of us were obscenely disturbed as was all of america as was all of the world about what had happened and we immediately started to say, what can we do? what can we do to make a difference? and it began as a series of meetings and the attendance grew and it grew and because we were all people who were in -- used to getting things done, they say you get something done, ask a busy woman and here we are today. >> and as amy said in her report, nina, this is about getting solutions, i mean it's great the me too, to continue the conversation but time's up is about solutions. nina. >> it is. yeah, the solutions that we're looking for are, for example, the legal defense fund. time's up legal defense fund that we started now has $13.5 million in donations on our go fund me page including $5 and $10 donations and the purpose of the fund is the attorneys stepping up to help them is to help low income women like the janitors, like the farm workers or home health workers who don't have the means to get representation that they need to protect themselves when they speak out and to assert their rights. >> tina, this is the difference with the legal defense fund because the me too movement was started in 1997 by tarana burke, an activist but it wasn't until hollywood became involved last year that it got so much attention, and there are women of color and lower income women who felt they have been left out of the conversation and this will address this, this fund will, tina. >> well, that's the whole purpose of it. i mean the real object of the fund is to make sure women who are voiceless who don't have representation and are afraid to come forward know now they have access to legal resources, so anyone who needs those, we have partnered with the national women's law center who you know, robin, is a 45-year-old women's rights organization, well respected, fighting for these rights for decades. they will be the home for the time's up legal defense fund. they have a portal and button for legal assistance on their website. i urge folks who need help to go to that and i urge attorneys who want to volunteer to go to the website as well to volunteer and folks who want to donate to go to the go fund me page because we need to -- litigation is expensive. legal representation is expensive and we want to make sure people have the resources to speak out. >> and the fund is growing and, nina, just explain a little bit more about how those funds will be used. >> well, as of this morning, 4,100 people had donated more than $13 million to the fund. and one of the wonderful things about having the national law center involved is we have an in place organization with a history of standing up for the rights of women who will be able to both help people who come to the fund and also help attorneys who are interested in being part of the representation. i think it matches the best of both worlds. >> last question and start with you, nina. a lot of men have felt left out of the conversation, the me too movement and such, and you all are addressing that as well, and you know that men need to be involved in this movement. >> oh, absolutely, robin. we're all in this together, at the end of the day, these are about abuses of power and these abuses of power will end when we have parity and we'll only have parity when we all come to the table together. so me too and time's up is -- it's really about -- i should say this about time's up, it's really about bringing all people to the table including our allies. when you look at the men who have donated to the go fund me, and they've said wonderful things and talked about wanting to be involved, i think that's proof of their need to be involved. our need to have them involved and we are all going forward together. >> we are seeing that with time's up and our time is almost up but i'll give you the final word, tina. >> well, it's not just about sexual harassment, it's about really changing the way our workplaces work to make them fairer for everyone and need men and women and everyone involved so thank you. >> that's a good bottom line, tina, good to see you again, nina, thank you both very, very much. i'm sure we'll have more conversations and solutions going forward. thank you so much. >> real constructive movement. coming up, that warning about one of the most popular stars that kids watch on youtube. logan paul's post overnight is causing an uproar. or struggle with obesity lose weight and keep it off. contrave is believed to work on two areas of the brain: your hunger center... i'm so hungry. [ applause ] we have the latest research on women drinking. their health, more than 5 million women have what's known as alcohol use disorder. now, one mother is sharing her story about how she became dependent on wine and fought to take back control of her life. whether it's a casual drink with friends. >> is that apple juice. >> why don't have you this instead. >> reporter: or instead a "bad mom" house party. there's no doubt many women love even crave their so-called mommy juice. that drink or two that takes the edge off after a long hectic day. >> you feel like you deserve something and so wine becomes that something. >> reporter: for 39-year-old annie grace that drinking habit started at work. >> i actually got taken aside one day and told the bar is kind of like the golf course. that's where the deals happen. >> reporter: in her book "this naked mind" the mother of three describes how her relationship with alcohol got to a point where there was never a reason not to drink about four glasses of wine a night. >> it was two or three:00 in the afternoon saying, okay, well, it's almost 5 and then i'll be able to pour that glass of wine. >> reporter: grace didn't consider herself an alcoholic, but she says she was tired of living with the guilt she felt. >> i basically made a list of every reason i drank and just looked it up, learned everything i could and at the end of the year it was as if my conscious desired to drink less and my unconscious conditioning around alcohol had gone away. >> reporter: approximately 5.3 million women in the u.s. have alcohol use disorder or aud, a condition in which they are unable to stop or control their alcohol use. women who consume more than three drinks a day or more than seven a week are at higher risk for aud. but grace says she was able to take back that control and kick her emotional dependence on alcohol once she realized she didn't need it to relax, wok or socialize. while she hasn't had a sip in three years she doesn't like to say she doesn't drink. >> i like to say i drink as much as i want whenever i want. best of all if my kids ask for a sip of what's in my glass i can always give it to them in we're glad grace is doing so well. yelp is here. there's this new study showing women are catching up to men when it comes to the amount that we're drinking in yes and no but major differences when it comes to gender and how alcohol affects women. in particular the brain. there's some new data that suggests that women actually have to consume more alcohol to activate that reward center in the brain and there are other differences as well. first of all, why women drink. most women drink more to avoid a negative feeling like anxiety than to get a positive affect. there are different reward pathways men versus women in drinking and may have a greater stress response to withdrawal and throughout the stages of the addiction cycle women actually have more prominent effects so there are some differences. >> tell us about the medical consequences. >> we've heard some data supports positive effects with some moderate consumption, head to toe take a look at this chart. there are some negative effects from the brain down to the esophagus. breast, liver, empty calories, the list goes on and on. >> so how, we have these wine glasses, how do you evaluate your intake? >> okay, well, first of all the moderate definition of moderate consumption is seven five-ounce servings of wine which look like this. >> that's moderate. >> this is moderate per week. if you have a heavy pour, robin, this is the same amount. >> oh. >> it's five seven-ounce -- per week it's one bottle plus two five-ounce glasses so it's important to understand what's moderate to know if you're over it and, listen, i will tell you, doctor heal thyself. i am doing a dry month. >> what motivated you? [ cheers and applause ] danica patrick. danica patrick. great guest to start the new year. she is a top race car driver. into retirement but it's this new book, getting pretty intense on the speedway and now in her new book "pretty intense" sharing secrets to being unstoppable physically, mentally and emotionally. danica, it is so good to see you. >> thank you. always good it see you. >> you're saying a 90-day plan but you think people will stick with it. >> you have to establish a program and something that has structure, but what i hope that people take away from it because the book not only has the workout program in it that's 12 weeks and 50 recipes i wrote and photographed which was new for me. but it also has the first part of the book is five chapters on the mind and so what i'm hope something that people really realize that this is a lifestyle and i want them to develop a good relationship with food and exercise to not be a reward or punishment but a way of life and something that makes you feel good and something that makes you a better you every single day. >> i mean right up here. you got to change the way to think in order to change the way you feel. you got your mom into this. >> i did. what's funny, mom, i'm your daughter. you had this possibility forever and so but my mom loves organization and so the fact that the program was set up, she did it and she never stopped. >> she's got abs. >> she weighs 110 pounds. isn't that crazy. >> go, mom. >> my mom is almost 60. she's going -- >> go easy, tiger. >> well, we're dropping 20, right. so 40 is the new 20 and 60 is the new 40. >> this will make us feel young. you'll show us some moves here. >> the first will get your heart rate up so it's called "pretty intense" so the whole point most of the workouts all but one each week is meant to be 20, 25 minutes so jack up the cardio. get moving, lift some weights if you can but anyway we'll start with toe taps then we'll do hop-overs so this is called a slam ball and start with your right foot on the ball and we're going to do 20 alternating side to side then after that we'll stand on the left side of the ball and do ten hop-overs so everybody ready. here we go, 20. >> nice. >> pretty intense. nice. >> all right then we stand on the side of the ball. >> have these heels on. >> i know. robin, here we go. ten. >> over. >> whoa. hang on, my hair. >> what if you don't have a ball at home like this? put something -- >> so you can use anything. i mean these are, you know, fairly lightweight balls, six pounds but what i'm at home with my hair not in my face so i can't see what i'm doing i use a 20-pound ball so that's your fitness level so for your hob-overs and toe taps all about speed. that's your modification. >> i feel your heart is beating, isn't it? >> yeah. >> what else will you show us. >> the next move is going to get a little more into strength. push-ups on the slam ball. get down in a plank position. if you can't do a push-up you'll do alternating side to side. if you can't do this, get into plank and drop your knees down and that's your modification. i'd like you to be in plank first otherwise they start on their knees and their butt is too high. ten each side. >> only ten each identify. >> only ten each side. >> nice. again, and, again, you can pod phi it, can't you? >> you k you can get on your knees and that works too. still hard. i'd rather see you do full range of motion than half range. >> give us another one. >> okay. first this is your typical slam ball move. pick the ball up. get it overhead, drop down on the ground. just keep going. so we'll do ten of these. >> whoo. drop it down. and what is that? it works the whole body. >> this is going to get the squat. you'll get your legs into it. your arms into it. [ applause ] >> he's like tossing the ball up like it's nothing. >> your modification is just war weight so i use a 0-pound slam ball, sometimes 30 if i'm feeling good. >> 30? >> that gets your legs into it but again it's 20 minute, meant to be intense and meant to get you going. there's one workout a week -- >> why did you want to do this? >> well, you know, i just found a program that worked for me. a diet program that works for me. cutting out dairy, gluten, grains, all kinds of stuff like that that kind of lugs you down so i just melt more energy, clearly the workout moves because i'm kind of out of breath. >> okay. >> and, you know, there's just something about feeling good, right? when you eat well, when you get moving you just -- i feel like i'm better every day so it was a program i worked out since i was 15 years old and so this one has been the most effective so why not tell people. >> you're still going to get on the track, aren't you, at the daytona 500. >> oh, yeah, yeah. [ applause ] >> it's fission. it's physical being a driver. >> you know, daytona in february, it's like very mental. but the race gets to be physical, just you're side-by-side, bumper-to-bumper for four or five hours and finish up at the indy 500 in may so that's -- >> yes! yes many. dan characters always, just seeing how you've grown and matured, so incredibly giving. >> we've known reach other a long time. >> i feel like an amazon. >> striker is 5 now and we acquired him when he was 6 months old and he's 5 years old now so about 4 and a half years but he's been campaigned to do what he's doing to win this dog show for the past two years. >> what goes into it? >> a lot of hard work. >> a lot of grooming. >> a lot of grooming. this is kind of like a 24-hour a day job. you got to take care of animals all the time dough a lot of training as you said, a lot of grooming, when he's being campaigned like he is, he goes to three or four dog shows a week so you're grooming almost like every day. >> dogs he take well to it. >> yes, he loves it. the dogs that do this and are successful at it, i mean you can see how happy he is, tail is always going. >> putting that nose up in the air. he looks like snoopy. >> adorable. >> does he ever get down time when he's not perfectly coifed. >> he gets to go out and roll around in the mud. >> he loves this being surrounded by people and lights, everything. >> yi, when we were out earlier and had the balls he wanted to come up and play ball with everyone. all the people make no difference to him. >> he's very chill right now. >> i just wanted to say did you know from a young age when you first got him, you said he's been campaigning as you call it, but he had that special something. >> he was 6 months old and they charge change but by the time they're a year you see what you have. six months old we thought there was a possibility but by the time he was a year old we knew what he had. >> what is the it you look for?
