is to pay off credit card debt. >> mm-hm. and i'm going to quiz you and find out if you know anything about personal finance. how much debt do you think the average household currently has, over $25,000, over $15,000 or over $5,000? >> i'd say definitely over $15,000. >> ding, ding, ding, you got it. over $15,000. that is the current amount. it's approaching $16,000. $15,654 right now. about 50% of households roll that debt over month to month. they're paying about $900 in interest. paying this off should be a top priority. because in 2018 we're going to get more interest rate hikes. but, then, what are the solutions for paying it off? you know that we have $50,000 in debt. >> there's no one size fits all strategy. some people like to chip away at the card that has the most, others like to nail the one that has the least amount because it makes them feel good. you just have to have a strategy. >> another popular resolution, save more. >> your options. >> $600. >> not quite 1%, about 3% or just over 5%? >> i'll say not quite 1%. >> just a little over that. but that's not good. 5%, 4%, 3% over the last couple years. personal finance experts say you need to stash away 10% to 15%. we're not doing that. you want to make a resolution to try to save more in 2018. >> all right, how do you technically save more? >> you spend less, i guess. >> that is one strategy. build an emergency fund. that is definitely one of the key things. >> this is an important resolution. a lot of people get into predict unexpected job loss or car repairs. how many americans have no emergency savings whatsoever, 11 million, 32 million or 57 million. >> i'm going to go with the top. 57 million. >> 57 million americans. this is not a good number. what does happen if you have an unexpected job loss or medical bill, you end up putting it on the credit card, charging up a storm, not good. you want at least six months' safety net to go. the easiest way to do that is have it set up for a certain a money from your paycheck into your savings. >> and we're seeing by that six months of your salary. >> maybe more than that depending on your situation, but that's the general ballpark. >> that is frightening to know. so, resolution number four is boost your credit. >> right. so, this is an important resolution. if you have bad credit, it makes it difficult to buy or rent a home, land a job or purchase a car or get a cell phone or all of the above. >> so, no test there? >> no there is a test. the answer is all of the above. here's the thing. bad credit makes it difficult to do all these things. it's just a tough situation you're putting yourself in. so you really want to make it priority to actually boost your credit score. you should, first, if you don't know what it is, you should find out what your score is by going to annual credit report.com and you want to pay your bills on time. that accounts for the largest component of your score. having a responsible mix of credit, not having too much. things like that. >> not having $15,000 as debt. >> ooh, yeah. >> and with the calendar turn being, you get one year closer to retirement. for me, it's to recommit to retirement. >> retirement's a lot different today than your fathers and grandfathers. people aren't sitting on the back porch drinking lemonade. they're working. what is the percentage of americans who plan to work in retirement. over 30%, over 50%, 70%? >> i'm going to go 30%. and we're not talking walmart greeter here. >> some of them are doing part-time gigs like that. we've got a growing percentage of pre-retirees becoming you know are drivers, airbnb, anything they can to bring in a little extra cash. it's, it's social. they like the flexibility and they do like having a little extra money. >> over 30%. >> mm-hm. >> working after retirement. >> surely we will be having these conversations next year at this time. how do we keep our resolutions? >> smart. smart. s-m-a-r-t. specific, we're looking for unseasonably cold weather in charlotte, charleston, tampa, jackson, mississippi and all the way towards houston. not only there, but we're looking for the cold air to stay persistent through the northeast and the arctic chill to punch its way across. and we're looking for the coldest air of the season courtesy of this arctic high to wrap around the north central part of the country. let's talk about something here. blizzard expected throughout portions of the northeast. it's going to set up with unusually cold air, 30 and below, just brutal cold throughout portions of the northeast. then we watch out for two scenarios, if the low swings a little closer to us. we are watching out for a major snowstorm that could bring feet of snow along the east coast. kendis, diane? >> feet of snow. wow. >> paul, thank you. and president trump is getting back to work following a 11-day stay at his mar-a-lago resort in florida. he arrived back at the white house last night after another day of golfing and tweeting. after protests in iran, he slammed the government saying it's time for a change. in another tweet, he accused pakistan of lies and deceit. he is facing a hefty to-do list. he's planning to roll out his infrastructure plan for starters, and he wants to work out an immigration deal for the so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers. and avert a government shutdown. and north korea started out the new year by issuing a fresh threat to the united states, jooung used his annual address to warn that nuclear forces are a reality, saying the nuclear button is on his desk. he added that the entire u.s. mainland is within striking distance. president trump responded by saying "we'll see." kim jong un also said his country might send a delegation to the winter olympics in south korea and seoul is offering to hold high-level talks to discuss that option. a team from the national transportation safety board is joining the investigation into the crash that killed ten americans in costa rica. they're looking at strong winds as a likely factor but not ruling out possible mechanical problems. the small plane went down sunday shortly after takeoff killing two american families, a tour guide from wisconsin and their two local pilots. the families were bruce and ire rein steinberg, the new york family there. and from florida, mitchell and leslie weiss. both doctors, traveling with their two kids. and just hours ago, a southwest airlines flight was forced to return to seattle over a problem with the nose gear. the plane was heading to baltimore when the mechanical issue cropped up. the pilot had to circle over washington state and burn off fuel before landing safely back at seatac airport. and police in texas have issued an amber alert for the search for two girls that may have been abducted, one child is 7 and the other is 14. an amber alert comes after a mother had been found dead inside a home. they searching for a 44-year-old man who also lived in that home. he is a person of interest in the woman's death and possibly connected to the girls' disappearance. they suspect he may be heading for louisiana. and tennessee authorities are searching for two gunmen suspected of shooting two memphis area officers. an altercation broke out at a club. the officers were shot, both officers were hit as was a club goer. but all three are expected to be okay. a third suspect was arrested on monday morning. now to the small community of highlands ranch, colorado which is in mourning this morning. a candlelight vigil was held to honor zachary parish. who died zurngd sunday during an ambush. people are bringing flowers, cards and other items, memorials for the officers. now, we're also learning disturbing new details about the gunman, an iraq war veteran with a troubled history. abc's clayton sandell has more. >> reporter: in highlands ranch, colorado, 2018 is beginning with a life ending. >> shots fired, shots fired! >> reporter: five officers responding to a disturbance call early sunday and two civilians shot in a violent ambush. >> the person is still inside the apartment still. >> reporter: 29-year-old zachary parish, married with two young daughters was killed. >> we have one deputy down inside the apartment. >> reporter: three of the four wounded officers are out of the hospital. >> libertarian candidate. >> reporter: the gunman, 37-year-old matthew riehl was killed by an s.w.a.t. team. he was already on police radar. for rants against police. he posted these photos last summer showing a rifle. he graduated law school at the university of wyoming. after several incoherent facebook rants against the school last fall, they warned students and faculty if they saw riehl to call police. >> law enforcement has to consider indicators of somebody having mental health issues and factor that into whether they are either planning to commit a crime or capable of committing one. >> reporter: iriehl also servinged in the wyoming national guard. deploying to iraq in 2009, an honorable discharge in 2012. and you can see how intense the firefight was. if you take a look up here, you can see the building is absolutely riddled with bullet holes. the windows broken, not just here but on buildings around it, the sheriff said over an hour and a half, the suspect fired more than 100 shots, clayton sandell, abc news, highly highland ranch, colorado. and californians kicked off the new year with a new law and long lines. it's now legal for those 21 and older to buy pot for recreational use. so the lines started forming early outside the roughly 90 retailers who got licenses to open on new year's day. you can't light up anywhere cigarettes aren't allowed. but not everyone is celebrating. the california highway patrol is bracing for the downside which they say could bring an uptick in car accidents. well, the temperatures in milwaukee are subzero, but that didn't stop the new year's revelers from >> good morning, diane, kendis. we are looking for the cold wave to persist. frigid conditions throughout the northeast. arctic air overtaking the ohio valley region, reaching into the deep south. unseasonably cold weather in charleston, jacksonville, houston, tampa and jackson, mississippi. an arctic high pressure system in place, but then take a peek at this. no kidding, a blizzard possibly threatening the east coast. as this low moves along the east coast. diane, kendis. >> we'll keep an eye on that blizzard. it could be what's called by meteorologists as a bomb. later on this week with powerful winds. to washington or south of there where federal investigators from the u.s. are pitching in to help determine the cause of a plane crash in costa rica that left ten americans dead. there were gusty winds in the area when the plane went down shortly after takeoff. abc's adrienne bankert has more. >> reporter: a ntsb team on its way to costa rica to join authorities to determine why this routine flight crashed. killing ten americans and two crew on board. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: that plane smashing into pieces in mountainous terrain just minutes after takeoff in the capital of san jose on new year's eve. an american tourist saw it all from a nearby restaurant. >> the left hand turn, and it was totally side wise, and then nosedived straight into the ground. >> reporter: the plane, operated by nature air, the largest carrier in costa rica, the airline has a good safety record but had one crash last year killing one passenger. on board this flight, two costa rican pilots and a tour guide amanda geissler and this family. bruce and irene steinberg on vacation with their three sons from scarsdale, new york. the family shares on facebook we are in utter shock and disbelief right now. outside their home, their babysitter inconsolable. >> i don't know what happened. >> reporter: also killed mitchell and leslie weiss from tampa along with their teenaged daughter and son. >> you know want it to happen to somebody that you know. and they were a good, good family. >> reporter: costa rican authorities say they were good pilots but the winds were so strong. earlier in the day, that same plane had delayed landing due to winds. adrienne bankert, abc news. new york. >> thanks, adrienne for the update. the president is starting the year with a packed agenda now that he's back at the white house. >> he's poised to take on a series as challenges as congress returns tomorrow but facing thorny issues on the other side of the world. abc's megan hughes has details. >> reporter: president trump back in d.c. after a day of golf and a glitzy new year's eve bash at mar-a-lago. where he shrugged off questions about the latest warn about the north korean leader. >> we'll see, we'll see. >> reporter: in his new year's address, leader kim jong-un says that the u.s. should know that the but for nuclear weapons is on my table. kim jong-un said, the entire area of the u.s. mainland is within our nuclear strike range. another hot spot, iran. anti-government protests have raged since thursday and several people have been killed. the president tweeting that it's time for change. lindsey graham slamming trump's twitter approach on "face the nation." >> president trump is tweeting very sympathetically to the iranian people, but he just can't tweet here. he has to lay out a plan. >> have you conveyed this personally to the president?
