>> well, it looks like they're trying to fire bob mueller or the fbi investigating this by proxy. they're trying to do it by proxy, by undermining it. i think it's really problematic. as you know, we walready have tribalism that has seeped into every institution in our country, with two exceptions, the military and the fbi. now we see the fbi being politicized and special prosecutor being politicized. in order to get a political gain. you would think they would be trying to increase the credibility of the last two institutions that we trust. but no, it's becoming as i say, vested in tribalism. >> do you think the president and the republicans, if they are in fact trying to mire the thing down have reached the point, if mueller brings charges that people will disregard it? >> well, that's a big worry. i think the reaction we need to look at -- i think the american public will trust whatever the fbi and special prosecutor does. i think they will trust that, so the american public will trust it, but the question is will the american leaders who seem to be partners in this with donald trump, and undermining it, will they respond to it if bob mueller brings charges? that's a question we don't know the answer to. >> matthew dowd, we appreciate your analysis. thank you for joining us on a wednesday morning. paula, over to you. thank you very much. we want to move to the unprecedented security for the new year's eve ball drop. nypd on high alert after recent deadly terrorist attacks including the mass shooting in las vegas. abc's gio benitez has the very latest for us this morning. good morning to you, gio. >> reporter: hey, paula. good morning. plan you know it. on new year's eve, this is going to be people and packed with police, you know, they learned so much from this year's attacks, and that's why they are pulling out all the stops. the countdown on for new year's eve celebrations. security officials are on high alert. in new york -- >> three, two, one. >> reporter: -- expect the most security ever with new garage closures, streets blocked off, concrete barricades, armed and plainclothes officers amongst the crowd plus several additional checkpoints before entering times square. banned from this year's ball drop are backpacks, large bags and umbrellas. the strict rules and heightened law enforcement presence come after two terrorist attacks in new york city just in the past two months. >> people should expect to see an increase in security this new year's because of the ongoing threat we've seen from ice. over the past few years they sought to encourage followers to carry out low level attacks whenever they can, particularly targeting people where they gather in crowds. >> reporter: a recent joint assessment by fbi, nypd and the new york port authority said they remain concerned about international terrorists and domestic extremists potentially targeting the celebration in times square where more than 1 million people are expected to gather to ring in 2018. but also along the las vegas strip. law enforcement increasing security following the shooting in october that killed 58 and injured hundreds. >> they are going to be concerned about any place where he is the crowds gathering, or there's a certain vulnerability to those types of targets. >> reporter: there's one thing these police want you to bring to any of these events, and that's your patience. some things feel inconvenient and they will be but it's for your own safety. they want to make sure they can prevent any scenario. paula and dan?
