i'm dion lim. the family wasn't home during this fire and the damage could have been worse if not for a quick response from firefighters. >> news reporter melanie woodrow reports. >> reporter: firefighters say an early morning fire christmas eve is unlike any they'd seen before. >> the first time in 20 years i've come across a squirrel fire. >> reporter: a squirrel chewed through the neutral line energizing the entire home. with that surge of electricity, looking for some place to ground. >> right behind the left side of this plywood was actually the doorbell. >> reporter: which is where the smoldering fire began. >> from here it up anterior. >> reporter: menlo park fire district chief was walking his dog and noticed the fire. >> somebody was ringing the doorbell. >> reporter: emily allen says he told her to call 911. >> if he hasn't been walking his dog, it could have been very bad. >> reporter: pg&e determined it was a squirrel that caused the fire. the fire got here into the attic. the damage inside the home is minimal. about $5,000. could be more costly once an relektrition examines the damage. >> bad luck on christmas eve. >> reporter: firefighters rushed to the home a second time this morning to put out a hot spot. no one was inside and there were no injuries. melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> here's a question, did you finish your christmas shopping target, toys "r" us and such stayed open a bit later hoping to cash in on the ultimate procrastinators. >> i forgot an extra controller for my boyfriend's ps4. i got him a controller and another game. see you then. christmas eve had a soggy start for neighbors in the south bay. abc7 news was where crews responded to a broken water main. neighbors shared photos and video with abc7. you're looking at marble arch avenue. neighbors say they heard a loud noise which ended up being a manhole cover. >> it shot up in the air. water was shooting about 20 feet up and the water main broke. and watered a couple of garages. about a foot of water in my garage. >> neighbors say crews told them an old valve may be to blame for the break. cities across the nation stepped up security as a precaution as crowds gatter for holiday events. abc7 was in san francisco at pier 39 where on friday, you may remember the fbi prevented a planned christmas terror attack. 26-year-old ex-marinever rit aaron jameson is in jail accused of hatching the plan inspired by isis. it doesn't seem to be affecting anyone's christmas spirit. authorities remind the public, if you see something, say something. he is scheduled for a court hearing january 5th. he will pleat not guilty to any charges brought against him. >> the holidays can be an especially difficult time emotionally. for some people, they have no one to support them. there is a bay area group stepping up to try to save lives. news reporter lonnie rivera is at the golden gate bridge tonight with their story. >> a wonder of the modern world is san francisco landmark draws crowds during the year. those who come alone raise concerns especially during the holidays. >> we're looking for people ho come here alone, lingering mid span and maybe displaying some behavior that's emotional. >> mia is part of a group of volunteers called bridge watch angels. their sole purpose, look for for signs of depression. >> someone pacing, someone appropriately dressed for the weather, someone staring out into the distance. >> reporter: the bridge watch angels work in teams, wear orange arm bands and their job is positive engagement. >> really listen. that's the most important thing to let them unload despair and tell us what's going on or what triggered them. >> they're on the bridge helping others who obviously have come to a point in their life they're going through a lot. >> reporter: since january of 2017, bridge watch angels and police conducted 235 suicide interventions. they're hopeful intervention along with barriers being built will save lives. in san francisco, lonni rivera, abc7 news. another robbery at one of a b.a.r.t. station involving a group of teens. a man had a cell phone stolen last night an the el cerrito norte station. police detained several people but the man couldn't identify the suspects. they also didn't find a cell phone and couldn't track it. the victim was taken to the hospital for minor francisco and been 43 the overnight low. we had a storm system move into the pacific northwest bringing snow showers to seattle. a rain/snow mix to portland. it was too far north for us to receive any ready, a record breaking number of santas did something a little bit out of the ordinary today. more than 800 surfers donned the santa hats on christmas eve and dove into the waters of cocoa beach, florida. i wonder how they stay on. more than 10,000 people watched. last year 772 santas suved the waters there. they raised $35,000 for charity at today's event. >> i think i saw mrs. claus out there. or several. the season of giving is alive at well at antioch high school. students and faculty teamed up to brighten christmas for a young man who thought his holiday was ruined. >> want to see what the real spirit of christmas looks like. >> >> it was a picture-perfect response to what at first appeared to be a dark chamfer in shawn hawkins' young life. his old nintendo 3ds, a gift from his grandma was stolen at school while he was in gym class. >> my backpack was too big. i put it in my locker. >> he was devastated when it was stolen and wrote a note on the community white board begging for its return. this story could have ended right there if not for a couple of caring friends. >> he's a sweet kid and doesn't do anything wrong to anyone. i feel bad for him. >> these friends secretly began collecting money to buy him a new one, a dollar here, $5 there, persevering even when the mean kids spoke out. >> i told a couple people i was raising money. that kid that got it stolen? that's not funny. >> piper took this jid io of the emotional day they presented him with a new one. >> we need to induce these these moments more. >> those girls proved me wrong. >> shawn i think found out people care about him and are looking out for him. i think for shawn and piper the rewards of giving were pretty special for them, as well. >> for shawn this was more than having a video game system stolen. he studied for what he hopes to be his future career, a video game designer. >> he's already gone top camp to learn to write code. with a friend he came up with a couple ideas they've been begun designing. that was really important to him for his future. >> that's all it takes to ignite the spark into something big. >> it's nice to see good kids doing good things. >> i'm dion lim. the family wasn't home during this fire and the damage could have been worse if not for a quick response from firefighters. >> news reporter melanie woodrow reports. >> reporter: firefighters say an early morning fire christmas eve is unlike any they'd seen before. >> the first time in 20 years i've come across a squirrel fire. >> reporter: a squirrel chewed through the neutral line energizing the entire home. with that surge of electricity, looking for some place to ground. >> right behind the left side of this plywood was actually the doorbell. >> reporter: which is where the smoldering fire began. >> from here it up anterior. >> reporter: menlo park fire district chief was walking his dog and noticed the fire. >> somebody was ringing the doorbell. >> reporter: emily allen says he told her to call 911. >> if he hasn't been walking his dog, it could have been very bad. >> reporter: pg&e determined it was a squirrel that caused the fire. the fire got here into the attic. the damage inside the home is minimal. about $5,000. could be more costly once an relektrition examines the damage. >> bad luck on christmas eve. >> reporter: firefighters rushed to the home a second time this morning to put out a hot spot. no one was inside and there were no injuries. melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> here's a question, did you finish your christmas shopping target, toys "r" us and such stayed open a bit later hoping to cash in on the ultimate procrastinators. >> i forgot an extra controller for my boyfriend's ps4. i got him a controller and another game. see you then. christmas eve had a soggy start for neighbors in the south bay. abc7 news was where crews responded to a broken water main. neighbors shared photos and video with abc7. you're looking at marble arch avenue. neighbors say they heard a loud noise which ended up being a manhole cover. >> it shot up in the air. water was shooting about 20 feet up and the water main broke. and watered a couple of garages. about a foot of water in my garage. >> neighbors say crews told them an old valve may be to blame for the break. cities across the nation stepped up security as a precaution as crowds gatter for holiday events. abc7 was in san francisco at pier 39 where on friday, you may remember the fbi prevented a planned christmas terror attack. 26-year-old ex-marinever rit aaron jameson is in jail accused of hatching the plan inspired by isis. it doesn't seem to be affecting anyone's christmas spirit. authorities remind the public, if you see something, say something. he is scheduled for a court hearing january 5th. he will pleat not guilty to any charges brought against him. >> the holidays can be an especially difficult time emotionally. for some people, they have no one to support them. there is a bay area group stepping up to try to save lives. news reporter lonnie rivera is at the golden gate bridge tonight with their story. >> a wonder of the modern world is san francisco landmark draws crowds during the year. those who come alone raise concerns especially during the holidays. >> we're looking for people ho come here alone, lingering mid span and maybe displaying some behavior that's emotional. >> mia is part of a group of volunteers called bridge watch angels. their sole purpose, look for for signs of depression. >> someone pacing, someone appropriately dressed for the weather, someone staring out into the distance. >> reporter: the bridge watch angels work in teams, wear orange arm bands and their job is positive engagement. >> really listen. that's the most important thing to let them unload despair and tell us what's going on or what triggered them. >> they're on the bridge helping others who obviously have come to a point in their life they're going through a lot. >> reporter: since january of 2017, bridge watch angels and police conducted 235 suicide interventions. they're hopeful intervention along with barriers being built will save lives. in san francisco, lonni rivera, abc7 news. another robbery at one of a b.a.r.t. station involving a group of teens. a man had a cell phone stolen last night an the el cerrito norte station. police detained several people but the man couldn't identify the suspects. they also didn't find a cell phone and couldn't track it. the victim was taken to the hospital for minor legislative affairs director defending the president today on fox news. >> the president is saying we need to have -- we need to know our civil servants are doing the honorable thing. it's important the american people know what happened in that investigation. >> reporter: democrats defended mccabe's integrity. california representative jackie speiers saying he has not displayed any conduct that would suggest he should be fired. the fbi says at the time of the political donations mccabe consulted with the ethics officials about the contributions. >> aaa is bringing back its tipsy toe program ready, a record breaking number of santas did something a little bit out of the ordinary today. more than 800 surfers donned the santa hats on christmas eve and dove into the waters of cocoa beach, florida. i wonder how they stay on. more than 10,000 people watched. last year 772 santas suved the waters there. they raised $35,000 for charity at today's event. >> i think i saw mrs. claus out there. or several. the season of giving is alive at well at antioch high school. students and faculty teamed up to brighten christmas for a young man who thought his holiday was ruined. >> want to see what the real spirit of christmas looks like. >> >> it was a picture-perfect response to what at first appeared to be a dark chamfer in shawn hawkins' young life. his old nintendo 3ds, a gift from his grandma was stolen at school while he was in gym class. >> my backpack was too big. i put it in my locker. >> he was devastated when it was stolen and wrote a note on the community white board begging for its return. this story could have ended right there if not for a couple of caring friends. >> he's a sweet kid and doesn't do anything wrong to anyone. i feel bad for him. >> these friends secretly began collecting money to buy him a new one, a dollar here, $5 there, persevering even when the mean kids spoke out. >> i told a couple people i was raising money. that kid that got it stolen? that's not funny. >> piper took this jid io of the emotional day they presented him with a new one. >> we need to induce these these moments more. >> those girls proved me wrong. >> shawn i think found out people care about him and are looking out for him. i think for shawn and piper the rewards of giving were pretty special for them, as well. >> for shawn this was more than having a video game system stolen. he studied for what he hopes to be his future career, a video game designer. >> he's already gone top camp to learn to write code. with a friend he came up with a couple
