The lastminute deals and apps to use to get the perfect and personalized present just in time for the holiday using only your phone. And good morning, america. Thank you so much for joining us on this thursday morning. Its great to have you, tom llamas, here with us. We want to get to that breaking news. A terrifying attack in australia. Thats right, amy. A driver rammed into a crowd of Holiday Shoppers during rush hour on a busy street in melbourne injuring more than a dozen people. Police have called it deliberate and that driver is under arrest along with another person and James Longman has the latest for us. Good morning, james. Reporter amy, good morning. Police are saying they still have no clear idea on motive, although the suspects Mental Health issues are being raised. Whatever his reasons, this is yet another deadly attack in a major western city. The white suv plowed through crowds as they crossed this busy street barreling across an intersection filled with pedestrians. At least 19 injured, several of whom who are in critical condition. A preschool age child rushed to the hospital with a head wound. At this stage we believe its a deliberate act. And i repeat that. At this stage, we believe it is a deliberate act. However, we do not know the motivation. Reporter witnesses say the suv ran through red lights, railed onto rail tracks before deliberately taking aim at those going about their day. I saw people running. Turned around. Saw people scattered on the road. Some were nonresponsive. He made a collision with the people but obviously a pole or curb and lost control of the vehicle and crashed. I saw a man getting arrested outside of the jeep, maybe 30 years old. Reporter they say the perpetrator is of afghan descent with a history of mental illness. One witness posting this. This is the man would rammed into pedestrians. It was one sole person in the car that was the driver. Thats the offender we have in custody. There was also another 24yearold male in close proximity around that time filming that incident with his mobile phone and had a bag with possession of knives in it and taken into custody to determine whether he was, in fact, connected with the incident. At this stage we dont believe that to be the case. Scary, obviously. Reporter the area still on lockdown. I heard what i thought was shots. I just ran straight through the crowd. Reporter a similar incident took place just around the corner from here in january. That killed six people. As a result concrete blocks were installed to prevent these car attacks, but they didnt manage to stop this one. Amy . James longman, thanks so much. Abc newss Aaron Katersky joins us from australia. Good morning to you, and tell us what the mood is like right now. Reporter good morning to you. Christmas falls at the height of summer so the crowds are thick christmas shoppers going till midnight in the days going up to the holiday because of the nice weather and whether or not this turns out to be terrorism or something else, it does bring back memories of an attack just before christmastime three years ago at a Lindt Chocolate shop when hostages were taken under siege. The building came under siege and people were on edge, and i think its those very memories this attack in melbourne brings back right here in sydney where the streets are still clogged with Holiday Shoppers toting gift bags as they go on about their night and its just the kind of thing that authorities across the u. S. And in europe and elsewhere have been warning about because of the heightened concerns regarding terrorism, christmas, isis propaganda, but here in sydney, there are still plenty of people on the streets even as it approaches midnight now. People are very mindful of what happened in melbourne, but still determined to going on about their day with the glittering lights and the streets, the christmas windows, although shoppers in short sleeves. I have to say, amy, there is no real worry here although people are telling me that they are worried that something may happen because they know as the counterterror chief for new south wales, the municipality in sydney has been telling them, another attack in inevitable. Aaron katersky, thanks so much from australia. People being mindful of what could still happen there. Tom. Amy, thank you. Back here at home, Law Enforcement is taking extra steps to keep everyone safe amid chilling new threats online. That recent attempt, and millions of americans on the move for the Holiday Season. Pierre thomas is in washington with the alert being sent out. Pierre, good morning. Reporter tom, good morning. Overnight, the department of homeland security, the fbi preparing to remind americans to be on alert. Federal Law Enforcement officials working on a new video which should be released soon encouraging vigilance this Holiday Season. A draft of a dhs fbi script says in part, as you travel, shop and gather to celebrate the Holiday Season, we ask you to stay alert. You play a Critical Role in keeping our nation and our neighborhoods safe. Even though there is no credible threat Law Enforcement officials are on guard after that recent vehicle attempt and attempted bombing in new york city. One source telling us new york city wouldbe bomber was motivated to attack times square during the Christmas Season because of isis call for holiday terror and just days ago the terror group sent posters depicting the Washington National cathedral on fire with a threat against new york as well writing, wait for us. We meet in new york for christmas soon. Tom. Americans have to stay vigilant. Thank you, pierre. Amy. Millions of americans are on the move this morning heading out for the holidays. Take a live look, in fact, at the roads out in new jersey, and then in chicagos ohare airport. So many people traveling as that storm moves across the country and you know ginger is tracking it all for everyone. Good morning, ginger. Good morning, amy. Up to 40 inches of snow fell in parts of montana, and the roads look like this. So that is not what you want to see when you are headed to grandmas house here, and you know what . It wasnt just there. Minot, north dakota, looked almost blizzardlike. You dont need that when thats running across highway 2 there. It wasnt officially blizzardlike. What i do want to show you where this tracks next. Traveling 80 or 90 through really tomorrow night, thats where you see that cold front come through. Dallas to memphis could see thunderstorms. Friday night in massachusetts, including bostons airport, including interstate 90 and some of 80, i would watch out the farther west you go for some of the icing to happen. So you could end up with 2 to 4 inches of snow in some places, but then a tenth of an inch of ice, and that could be a problem. Saturday night, new york and boston being rain and some in washington, d. C. And interior new england is where we end up with accumulating snow. Overall not a ton of White Christmas ahead, but a ton of cold which ill show you in a bit. Amy . Mother nature not cooperating. Ginger, thanks so much. All that weather playing a major role in holiday travel. 51 million americans expected to fly during the holidays as we showed you that line at chicagos ohare, the line is growing, and Abcs David Kerley is at Reagan National airport in d. C. Also busy, and see the lines right behind you. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning, tom. Yes, absolutely. This is kind of the peak more the morning rush and folks have been getting in for their flights taking off this morning. Today and tomorrow the very busy days before christmas as folks try to get home for the holidays, about a 3. 5 increase in the number of travelers this year compared to last year, and, of course, the busiest places are going to be these tsa lines, in fact, tsa tells us theyre expecting about 20 more travelers coming through their spots. The busiest airports, guess it, atlanta, where we had the problem with the power outage earlier in the week and caused all the problems across the country. December 26th will be particularly bad there, the day after christmas. L. A. X. , plan for extra security tomorrow and more travelers could mean longer lines at the tsa security lines. Part of the reason are new requirements about electronic devices. Anything bigger than a cell phone has to be taken out, and you wont get that in the precheck line, but in the standard line, they may ask you to take it out of your bag, tom. If they dont, its because its being phased in, so dont be surprised if they dont waask y right away. That could have a major impact as well. David, we saw that wild headline about American Airlines and a scheduling glitch that left some flights without pilots over the holidays. Did they resolve that issue . Reporter yes, americas telling us they have using reserve pilots and the reason its kind of continued into the Holiday Season is that they have to sign them 24 hours before the flight, and they say its taken care of. All the airlines, tom, are worried about the weather, but so far as ginger showed us, it may not be that bad. Well see. Reserve pilots. Hope they have enough. David, thanks so much. Amy. From the airways to the highways nearly 100 Million People are expected to be traveling by road between this weekend and new years day. The worst of it expected today and tomorrow. Abcs eva pilgrim is out on the new jersey turnpike with an early look at conditions and some tips to avoid all the rush. Good morning, eva. Reporter good morning, amy. Get ready for traffic jams. More than 97 Million People are expected to be traveling on the roads this Holiday Season. Thats despite the fact that gas prices are slightly up this year, about 17 cents more to fill up this year than last year. Instead, we are expecting another record year with more people hitting the roads. Its up about 3 more people will be hitting the roads this year. You can see when you look at the traffic right now there are cars. This is normal morning traffic, but today is slated to be one of the busiest days on the roads. Tomorrow will be bad, as well, and if youre traveling in the afternoon, that is the tough time of day to travel. Expect to sit in traffic. The worst cities for traffic, new york, washington, d. C. , chicago and boston and the gridlock times pretty much that afternoon rush hour between 3 00 and 6 00. Amy. Sometimes even later. Eva, what about the best days to travel . Give us those days. Reporter well, the best days to travel are christmas and new years. So if you wait till everyone gets to where theyre going then you hit the roads, you wont have to deal with all the traffic. We appreciate it. Thanks, eva. Stay safe. Tom. New years day always a little tough to travel. Turning to other major headlines.
