The officer got out of the patrol car and he heard a shot, coming from inside the vehicle. The car windows were so heavily tinted. Responding officers could not see inside. They fired bine bag rounds to break out the windows. Ny confirmed that the occupant of the vehicle was deceased from a gunshot wound. Las vegas police tell us they were going to ask the District Attorney to charge a caucasian with two counts of attempted lewdness with a child. Because of his suicide, the case is now closed. The train was traveling at least twice the speed allowed before going off the rails. Marcy gonzalez looks at what went wrong. The railcars hauled from the scene of mondays deadly amtrak accident. Emergency, emergency. The train was on an inaugural run. Rounding a curve over i5 in dupont, washington when it derailed. People are flying, youre like, oh, my god, this is real. The train was going well over twice the speed limit, 80 miles an hour in a 30 mile per hour zone. Its crazy. Railcars sent spilling over the overpass, some crashing on to the busy highway during the morning rush. Crushing 7 vehicles. That train is derailed over the freeway. One of the trains had tipped up side down and spilled the passengers out and then the train came down on top of them. More than 70 people injured, three on board the train killed. Among them, transit employee zach will hoyt. This afternoon, that man, robert vega was given the maximum sentence in a fairfield courtroom. Laura anthony was in court for what turned out to be a very emotional end to the case. In an emotional hearing, inside a fairfield courtroom. The family of Augustine Gus vegas, told a judge what his loss 22 months ago has meant to them. Several of vegas ten children gave statements, some offering forgiveness to robert vega, a man once considered part of the family. We have some that didnt want to see rob do that many year s the maximum 21 years, eight times in his vallejo home. He was dating vegas daughter and is the father of their young child who witnessed the shooting. Maybe it would have been easier if it had been a stranger. Theres no way to make sense of this. When he risks his life every day for everybody and gets his one sanctuary, his one place where he knows he can lay his head. Thats where his life was taken. The iraq war veteran suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder. And thought he was in danger. On his way out of court, vega turned to the family and said, i love us with all my heart, im not a danger. Im not a bad person. This [ bleep ] is not justice. I really believe in my son for his Mental Illness and posttraumatic stress. For both of our families, this is a great tragedy. The father indicated he does plan to appeal.
