snow in the forecast all week. there's already a foot of snow on the ground in the buffalo area, and whiteout conditions exist on many highways. >> there are travel advisories now in place. rob marciano with more. >> reporter: more than 100 million americans feeling the effects of this winter blast. lake-effect snow falling from indiana to new york. thundersnow, startling west seneca. three miles south, this scene, the bills/colts game, snow falling up to two inches per hour, so thick at times you can barely see the field. indiana drivers dealing with whiteout conditions, slick roads causing crashes. a jackknifed tractor-trailer slowing traffic to a crawl. this driver careening into a pond outside boston. at the height of the winter storm almost 300,000 without power. >> there's trees popping all over. never know when one going to pop you off. >> reporter: crews now working to get everyone back online. >> we want to get them warm, get their electricity back on. >> reporter: but one major school district outside of atlanta still in the dark and closed on monday. lake-effect snow warnings continue on monday with some locations getting over 20 inches of snow. and another yeah, already off to an early start. >> thanks a lot, farmer's almanac. now to the other story we're following, the breaking news out of southern california. the thomas fire we've been paying attention to in ventura county is now expanding. >> it has burned 230,000 acres, the fifth-largest fire on record in california and is now moving into santa barbara county. threatening many beach resort areas there. more evacuation orders have been issued, some in the middle of the night. >> my mash across the street pounding on my door at 3:00 in the morning. debbie, get out! debbie, pack your stuff, get out. >> get this. staggering numbers here. some 18,000 buildings are threatened by those wildfires at this very moment. it's also cut power to tens of thousands of residence and some schools are now closed until the new year. the race in alabama to fill attorney general jeff sessions' senate seat is reaching a feeferred pitch today. alabama voters could end up electing their first democratic senator in 25 years in what should have been an easy win for republicans. after eight women accused candidate roy moore of sexual misconduct. two of them claim he sexually assaulted them when he was in his 30s and they were just teenagers. >> these allegations are completely false. i did not date underage women. i did not molest anyone. >> i believe those women in etowah county. it's like senator shelby said, where there's smoke there's fire. there's some fire in there. >> one day before the election, polls show the candidates in a dead heat. and with president trump lending his voice to a state-wide robocall, it is being called a referendum on the president. the president's former campaign manager, paul manafort, is back in court today. we're also learning new details about robert mueller's russia investigation. in newly-unsealed documents, e-mails are revealed between manafort and rick gates, and their discussions about a press strategy after he left the campaign. court documents also show that prosecutors obtained 15 search warrants. they seized thousands of documents and dozens of electronic devices. outrage is growing in the middle east over president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital. meanwhile, israel is touting a major victory in its war against underground tunnel threats. over the weekend, israeli authorities say they used new techniques to destroy a tunnel built by hamas militants. army officials say the timing of the operation is not connected to the wave of violence following the u.s. decision. james longman has more. >> reporter: water cannons and tear gas wounded protesters. and then the crackdown. harrowing scenes outside the u.s. embassy in beirut as anger at the president's speech echoes throughout the region. violence doesn't seem to show any sign of abating. the rocks are still being thrown and the tear gas still coming back. >> it's our home. our land. >> reporter: and the political fallout continues. the arab league petitioning other countries to recognize east jerusalem as the capital of a future islamic state. as nikki haley defends the decision. >> we don't do things to please every other country in the world. we do things to advance the ball. and that's what the president did. >> reporter: the palestinian foreign minister saying they will have no communication with u.s. officials and that they won't meet with the vice president mike pence when he visits later this month. mike pence's office calling that unfortunate. iraq celebrating the victory over isis. iraqi helicopters flew over baghdad to commemorate the end of the offensive against the islamic state. the iraqi prime minister formally announced the end of the war over the weekend. that announcement comes just two days after the russian military declared it had defeated isis in neighboring syria. this year's nobel peace prizewinner has accepted the award with an ominous warning. for the rest of the world. the executive director of ican, the international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons accepted the honore long side a survivor of the 1945 bombing of hiroshima. but she noted the hostility between president trump and kim jong un. >> will it be the end of nuclear weapons? or will it be end of us? one of these things will happen. the only rational course of action is to cease living where our mutual destruction is one impulsive tantrum away. >> the nobel committee recognized the group for its involvement in a u.n. treaty banning nuclear weapons. bitcoin begins its first weekday of trading on a major u.s. exchange. so the crypto currency got off to a strong start on the chicago board of of options exchanged. futures gained more than 2% in its first 75 minutes, jumping more than $300. it kingdom now, a zoo in berlin is celebrating the birth of this tiny polar bear cub. the mother, named tonya, gave birth a few days ago, and this morning the cub is only the size of a guinea pig. >> a largest fires in california history. fanned by those strong winds that won't let up. a full report from the front lines. alabama voters are one day away from the high-stakes senate election. in a rare interview, with republican roy moore is insisting he never molested anyones as democrat doug jones is standing by the women accusing his opponent of sexual misconduct. new details about a deadly plane had a good time. >> hopefully they won the game after all that. we'll break that all down in sports, but we're going to start with the battle in southern california against the wildfires there. >> breaking overnight, new evacuation orders have been issued. the biggest and most out of control is the thomas fire burning northwest of los angeles. it's now moving into santa barbara county and has burned 230,000 acres. >> nearly 800 buildings have been destroyed and thousands more are threatened this morning. abc's marci gonzalez in the fire zone. >> reporter: this massive inferno now raging up the southern california coast and still growing. >> look at how big that is. look at how dangerous it is. >> reporter: those powerful santa ana winds intensifying, whipping the flames over hillsides and towards homes. >> this area was under evacuation two days ago and we lifted those orders because we thought we were in pretty good shape. >> residents here in started. >> residents here in carpenteria >> my neighbor across the street pounding on my door at 3:00 in the morning. debbie, get out! pack your stuff, get out! >> reporter: those terrified neighbors scrambling, the flames closing in fast. >> in ten seconds, we had the fire close to us from 30 to 6 0 to 100 feet high. >> reporter: but luis decided to stay, grabbing a hose, doing what he could to keep the fire from spreading. and his efforts paid off. the flames came dangerously close, but he was able to help save some of his neighbors' homes. now the fight to make sure others in santa barbara county fare as well. >> this fire is going to keep spreading for a while. >> reporter: but a glimmer of hope for the rest of southern california. crews getting the upper hand on four other fires and one is now completely out. but the devastation left behind is hard to swallow. >> just absolutely traumatic. >> reporter: sharon flores and her daughter ariana in disbelief. only their mailbox left standing. >> i was hopeful, you know, a 50/50 chance. it doesn't seem like it's real. we just spent thanksgiving here. >> reporter: and you can see the flames and smoke where firefighters are still hard at work. there is some potential relief in sight because the winds are dying down, but it is dry out here and there is no rain in the forecast for more than a week. kendis, diane. >> marci, thank you. we're also following the brutal winter weather here in the eastern u.s. >> even the south got snow this weekend. icy roads are likely for this morning's commute. so much for it being hot-lanta. overnight temperatures will be in the low 30s and schools are closed or delayed because of the conditions. you're looking at upstate new york. snow fell, as well. the same for new england. >> there won't be much of a break before the next storm either. let's get the full forecast from accuweather's melissa constanzer. good morning, melissa. >> diane, kendis, along the west coast, we have high pressure in control. that's going to keep things dry across the southwest. and we keep the offshore flow. still gusty santa ana winds. the fire danger stays elevated here. further off through the northeast, it's all about that cold really blasting in. and we are talking about some big chill here as we go through the middle of the week. wednesday there you see another shot of cold air. even thursday, there's more lining up across the great lakes. at times, when you factor in the winds here, it will feel like it's in the teens, even below zero as we go through wednesday in the northeast. kendis, diane. >> some of the coldest temperatures of the year. thank you. what should have been an easy republican victory in the election to fill the senate seat of attorney general jeff sessions is now coming down to the wire as one of alabama's most hotly-en contested showdown in decades. here's abc's richard cantu. >> reporter: embattled republican senate candidate roy moore spoke out on sunday who have accused him of actions ranging from inappropriate behavior to sexual assault when he was in his 30s and some of the women were in their teens. >> these allegations are completely false. i did not date underage women. i did not molest anyone. >> reporter: his opponent in the race, democrat doug jones, >> just like senator shelby today, i believe those women. >> reporter: richard shelby is alabama's senior u.s. senator, a republican. he has already cast his ballot, choosing a republican write-in candidate over moore. >> i would rather see the republican win, but i hope that republican would be a write-in. i couldn't vote for roy moore. i didn't vote for roy moore. >> reporter: but president trump once again backed moore with new robo calls that went statewide sunday. >> roy moore is the guy we need to pass our make america great again agenda. >> reporter: and moore's chief strategist saying in stark terms on "the this week" that the special election is a referendum on the president. >> this is donald trump on trial in alabama. if the people of alabama vote for this liberal democrat, doug jones, then they're voting against the president who they put in office at the highest level. >> reporter: alabamans have not elected a democratic senator in 25 years. richard cantu, new york. and today the women accusing president trump of sexual harassment and assault are expected to appear together for the first time and demand a congressional investigation. on sunday, u.n. ambassador nikki haley said those women deserve to be heard. that's a stark contrast to many republicans who defended the president saying he was elected despite those allegations. haley says the president's accusers should not be treated differently than other women who have come forward. >> women who accuse anyone should be heard. they should be heard and they should be dealt with. i think we heard from them prior to the election. and i think any woman who has felt violated or felt mistreated in any way, they have every right to speak up. >> meanwhile, some democrats are calling for the president's resignation. bernie sanders says the president should follow the example of minnesota senator al franken and resign. two other democratic senators are also calling on the president to step down. former trump campaign manager paul manafort and his associate, rick gates, are due in court today. newly unsealed documents reveal they discussed a press strategy after he left the trump campaign. it appears manafort was looking to defend himself. manafort and gates are charged with making false or misleading statements and acting as unregistered agents of a foreign principal, as it's called, in this case ukraine. and we have new details this morning of a deadly crash of a small plane into a house in san diego. two of the four people on board that single engine aircraft were killed on sunday just minutes after the pilot reported catastrophic engine failure. the other two are hospitalized. the house luckily was empty at the time. the homeowner left for work just ten minutes before the crash and his wife and 2-year-old daughter were out of town. and spirit airlines is standing behind its decision to kick a houston family off a flight to new york on friday. this cell phone video was taken by the mother who says she told flight attendants she would stop breast-feeding her 2-year-old son and put him back in his seat when the cabin doors closed. but the crew says she failed to comply with crew instructions several times before takeoff. some two months following hurricane maria, the official death toll in puerto rico has risen to 64. although other reports indicate it may be more than 1,000. the federal assistance price tag has now topped $1 billion. and the island's power grid remains a mess. it's unclear how many people remain in the dark, but officials say about 65% of power-generation has been restored. a texas teen is getting a lot of attention for her marathon finish this morning, and not just because of her time. >> on the left is chandler self. she's just yards away from the women's portion of the dallas marathon, but she can barely stand up. she said her legs felt like jell-o. they looked like that. >> but there next to her, a 17-year-old arianna looterman comes alongside her and helps her stumble across the finish line. 17 years old, being hailed as a
