This morning firefighters are most concerned about the thomas fire in ventura counseledty. Here is a live look from kabc. As of last night cal fire said this fire is the largest, burned at least 50,000 acres and 150 structures. It is still zero percent contained. Fire officials evacuated 27,000 people from their homes. Its incredible. It started behind my house. My parents house is burning down 15 miles away. You see the flames, your heart sinks down and you keep praying. You keep hoping. This morning firefighters are struggling to contain another wildfire, this one in the san fernando valley. The creek fire has forced people and their animals to evacuate. You see volunteers leading horses, alpacas and dogs to safety that fire has burned more than 11,000 acres so far and destroyed about 30 buildings. Helping to fight the fires in socal, hearing from a captain from the Fire Department who is fighting flames. Matt keller is live at fire station one in the city of santa clara. Good morning, matt. Reporter dozens and dozens of firefighters are now in Southern California. Many were sent to the front lines including some firefighters from station ten here in the city of santa clara. Check out this tweet they sent last night. You can see whats happening on the front lines in Southern California. This is from santa claras engine 90 at the thomas fire. The firefighters are on structure protection and say the winddriven fire embers are over 75 Miles Per Hour and make for tenuous conditions. The city of santa clara is part of two strike teams that also includes firefighters from san jose, milpitas, the county, palo alto and morgan hill. Captain bill murphy of the Fire Department talked with us via face time from the front lines of the thomas fire in ventura county. Only two months ago captain murphy informs a similar firefight in santa rosa. Probably the biggest difference would be the temperature is not quite as high as it was in the north bay fires but the wind, the relative humidities are very similar to what happened in the north bay. Reporter and just like the north bay fires there are multiple fires burning at the same time. Marin county sent ten engines and 44 firefighters to Southern California. They have scorched a combined 66,000 acres of land, so thats 103 square miles. Heres a live look at the thomas fire currently burning at ventura county. Cal fire says this fire is the largest one with at least 50,000 acres burned. 150 structures are damaged or destroyed. 12,000 more are threatened. Its just devastating. The crew here has their hose laid down ready to put out the flames if need be. These workers say their salaries arent keeping up with the cost of living in oakland. The mayor says the city only has so much money. The city always tells us theyre broke. Ive been here 20 years. They said theyre broke. I recognize their frustration but i cannot spend money i dont have. I cant. What do you want . Reporter expect to see this today, picketing outside city buildings like the library and city hall. Nonemergency services will not be available today. Now there could be some movement in the negotiations. The city council is set to meet behind closed doors to take another look at their offer. Police in fremont are questioning a driver about a deadly hitandrun crash. A car hit a pedestrian around 5 30 yesterday at east warren avenue and bradley street. Police say the victim died at the scene. Investigators found the vehicle involved in the accident with major front end damage parked at a nearby shopping center. And thats where they found the driver. Its unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors. A homeowner has a mess to clean up following this accident. Jose Ines Garcia Zarate was found not guilty on murder and manslaughter charges last week. A grand jury has indicted him for being a felon in possession of a firearm and having a gun while being in the u. S. Illegally. He is an undocumented immigrant. Hes back in local court for sentencing on a gun possession conviction in the steinle case. Student activists are celebrating the resignation of a san jose state professor accused of sexually harassing students. A Victory Party last night. The Organization Led a petition drive against him. The board of supervisors overwhelmingly approved it. The shop is at the time to go on 22nd avenue. There has been strong opposition to neighbors who raised concerns it could increase crime. It would be dangerous with all the children who live in the area. New details on a plan to settle disputes between tenants and landlords in marin county. County supervisors are moving forward with a mandatory mediation ordinance. It requires landlords who want to raise the rent over 5 to enter into mediation with tenants. Right now landlords are under no obligation to negotiate. This ordinance doesnt do enough, though. They lobbied for a just cause for eviction ordinance but the board of supervisors reject that had idea. Thousands of families in the south bay are getting fluoride in their water. Moving ahead with construction of a new well in east san jose. Officials say the area has a high concentration of lowincome families and many dont have access to proper dental care. Investment is critical because its a new well. Its not something that has to be retrofitted and that means well have the best opportunity we can to do this in a very effective and efficient way.
