We do have a live look at the fire and you can see that homes are burning right now. Authorities do say at least one person has died trying to escape the flames, one firefighter has been injured and the official number is 150 structures that are gone, just completely destroyed, that number is going to rise. Our sister station in l. A. Reports that the vista delmar hospital, a behavioral healthcare facility in ventura was completely leveled by the blaze. Fortunately all patients and staff were evacuated. Deputies have been going door to door waking up families. 27,000 people and about 8,000 homes are currently under mandatory evacuation. We had a reverse 911 call for mandatory evacuation. My son is a firefighter and im not going to wait around for somebody to have to come rescue me, so im out of here. Reporter now, there are widespread power outages, several School Districts have closed today and many roads including parts of highway 150 are shut down. Firefighters hope to start attacking the fire from the air at day break. Again, the thomas fire started as a small brush fire at around 6 30 last night at only 50 acres, right now its estimated at 31,000 acres, zero percent contained, threatening thousands of homes and it is expected to grow throughout the day. In the east bay gunfire broke up a busy night of holiday shopping, this is emeryville. Two people in Critical Condition and police have detained one person. Lilian kim has the story. Reporter officers talked around the emeryville target looking for any evidence the number of bullet holes found on at least two vehicles shows that several shots were fired. There were a lot of shoppers in the area, a lot of cars in the parking lot and people so it was it was quite a hectic scene for a while. Officers say two people were shot, both now in Critical Condition. One managed to walk to home depot where he was picked up by an ambulance, a third person who was involved in the incident was not injured. Officers found him walking a block away where they took him into custody. Police are trying to determine what led up to the shooting but they say it appears none of them had been shopping. It appears they just came here parked and some incident ensued in which two people received gunshot wounds and one person has been detained. Reporter target remained closed for the rest of the night. Nearby shoppers we talked with were surprised to hear what happened. One lane of the bay bridge will remain closed for weeks as caltrans makes repairs after a truck driver plowed into a tollbooth killing a toll collector. The thomas fire has grown by thousands of acres in just the past few hours, strong winds and dry fuel are driving the flames toward downtown ventura right now. Flames have already crossed into the city limits. We have seen dozens of homes burning. This is a live look from the kabc chopper, you can see structures that are burning, others that are threatened. Authorities say at least one person has died, one firefighter was injured and at least 150 structures have burned already. That number is going to go up. A Mobile Home Park, an apartment complex and a behavioral hospital are all among the destroyed buildings. Deputies were going door to door overnight waking up people in the evacuation zen and at last update 27,000 people and about 8,000 homes are under mandatory evacuation. There is widespread power outages, several School Districts are closed and many roads are shut down. The prospects for containment are not food, really Mother Nature will decide when we have the ability to put it out because it is pushing hard with the wind. That wind is the major problem right now. 500 firefighters are on scene, they hope to start attacking the fire from the air at day break, the wind is going to determine some of that. The thomas fire exploded from just about 50 acres, 11 hours ago, to 31,000 acres right now and again the wind is expected to drive it throughout the day. The seiu union says it hopes the strike will help city leaders see how essential these 3,000 workers are to life in oakland. They are upset about wages and understaffing which means temporary workers have to come in and those temporary workers want benefits. We dont receive the Healthcare Plan that full time and permanent parttime workers receive. We are also exempt from contributions to the citys retirement plan. We cant spend money we dont have. We have to preserve our basic services. Oaklanders need those potholes filled, they need the trash picked up off the street. If we spend money we dont have we then compromise services. Reporter the mayor says the city has negotiated in good faith for seven months. They have agreed to mediation, they just need more time. But the strike is set for today. Emergency services will still be available, police, firefighters, 911 dispatchers they will all be at work today. Lawyers plan to appeal the gun possession conviction against the man who was acquitted on murder charges in the death of kate steinle. Jose ines Garcia Zarates lead attorney believes that the gun charge conviction is inconsistent with the jurys decision to acquit his client on much more serious charges. Prosecutors accused Garcia Zarate of intentionally firing at steinle at San Franciscos pier 14 in 2015. He remains in jail now and faces federal immigration charges. Families in san jose are fighting to keep their schools from shutting down. The Oak Grove School district claims there arent enough students to keep all eight schools in operation. The justices will hear arguments in the case of a baker citing religious grounds when he ref e refused to make a wedding cake for a samesex couple. A lower court found his refusal was unlawful discrimination. The baker says this violates his rights to religious freedom and free speech. The case is the first involving gay rights since the Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that states could not prevent samesex couples from marrying.
