bay bridge toll plaza, katie utis, abc news. well, a brief scare this afternoon on treasure island. a call came in just after 1:00 of a truck in the water at the northeast end of the island. >> the san francisco fire department sent a boat out to check it out. when drivers entered the water, they found that the truck was empty. the atf is investigating a suspicious device found inside a mailbox in oakland. they shut down san pablo avenue. this is the third suspicious package found in the mail since early last month. leslie brinkley is live with more on this. leslie? >> reporter: good evening. this box is here along very busy san pablo avenue. it was a routine saturday afternoon. a postal carrier came here to open it up, take the mail out. they found, though, a suspicious device and reported it. a woman i spoke with here says she witnessed all of that says that to her it looked like a bottle with wires come ots of it. that's not confirmed by officials, though. the oakland fire department, the police department, u.s. postal inspectors, atf and the alameda bomb squad reported to the scene. it was blocked off creating gridlock. >> the sheriff's department rendered the item left in the box safe. and then atf agents and postal inspectors collected all the evidence. we were working on the crime scene almost until midnight last night. >> reporter: officials will not confirm if it was an explosive or a hoax. it will be sent to the crime lab near washington, d.c. along with two other recent exploding packages. in those cases, the recipient did receive non-life-threatening injuries the and if those two instances, the boxes were mailed. they were delivered before they blew up. in this case, they think the device or the box was placed inside this mailbox before. it did not pass through the postal system. it you find a suspicious device, you're advised to call 911. live in oakland, leslie brink i wi abc 7 news. tomorrow preliminary hearings will be held for those involved in the ghost ship. they have pleaded not guilty to 36 counts of manslaughter. the hearing is expected to last five days and it will be the first time a judge will hear evidence against the men. a memorial to kate steinle has been removed from pier 14 in san francisco at the request of her family. a group helped set it up after the man accused of killing her was acquitted. that group has strong ties to the white nationalist rally held this past august in charlottesville, virginia. they asked that the memorial be taken down to keep it from being politicized. all that's left are flowers. president trump is firing back on the investigation into alleged russian interference. today mr. trump tweeted i never asked comey to stop investigating flynn. that tweet reflects comey's testimony. now dianne feinstein says she believes she's seeing robert mueller putting an obstruction of justice case and the white house is panicked. >> i see it in the hyperfrenetic coastline until tuesday afternoon at p:3: in the afternoon. ari mill valley will be affected. 10 1 10:1:79 a.m. where the tide could reach as high as seven feet. it will be a chilly night but a windy saddened to report to you that we have recovered what we believe are the remains of little mariah woods. >> reporter: a medical examiner has not yet positively identified the remains, but investigators say the body was discovered by a dive team in a creek in a neighboring county from where mariah lived. her mother reported her missing last monday morning and told local media she last saw mariah when she put her to bid the night before. for days, the military came together to search for the missing girl with no luck. >> we've had a tremendous amount of people come out from this community, willing to assist, not only with their support, their willingness to help but also their prayers for this community. >> reporter: mariah's father was skeptical of the circumstances from the connection w w w w disappearance. a homeless man is called a hero. 36-year-old anyval angullo was near the home. the grandfather kopcouldn't get the children because of the flames and locked security door. angullo rushed in and pulled both children to safety. they were treated for smoke inhalation. the children would have been seriously injured or even killed if not for his actions they later tweeted he is a true hero. it is the season for giving. >> in san francisco today, the gifts were rolling in for several children in need of a little cheer. plus, the super moon is out tonight.
