>> hi, everyone. i'm lizzie bermudez. welcome to "bay area life," the place where lifestyle, interests, food, and entertainment all come together. there's so much to explore. on today's show, we're exploring the beautiful trails of mount diablo. we've taken our girls -- we've got two little ones -- on hikes, and i love that it's a workout that the whole family can do. and a weekend getaway that will make you want to pack your bags tonight. >> you can do anything, and it's all right here, without ever having to get back in your car and go anywhere else. >> and we're filling our bellies with mexican fare. >> now we're gonna taste it. i'm gonna give you a taste of this delicious guacamole. >> plus, a community-based organization investing in the lives of local seniors. >> it's just like a new room to us, brand-new. everything is so clean, so convenient. >> all of this fun driven by your northern california honda dealers. ♪ i'm gonna try doing something that i don't do a lot, and that's hiking. i'm at mount diablo in danville, and i know just the person to take me on a great hike today. okay, i'm ready for a hike, lorrie. >> you ready? >> yes, i am! >> what a great day! >> i'm a little nervous. [ laughs ] >> oh, no. this is fun. this was the first hike i did 16 years ago when i first started hiking, yeah. so it's a beauty. >> and you brought this perfect, beautiful weather here in the bay area today. >> i want it to rain so badly, but this is nice. >> this is pretty spectacular. >> this is really spectacular. >> okay, tell people who might be intimidated about hiking, why they need to be out here in the outdoors. >> oh, you know, well, first of all, it doesn't have to be just hiking. walking, just getting outdoors. sometimes, i go on a paved road. it doesn't have to be a trail. you don't have to have all the proper gear. i think you don't need to get caught up in all that. just get outside your front door. i think what research has actually shown now is that people become so engaged in what they're doing, they end up going further, longer, faster. and then it just becomes a habit. that's what i've been telling women. when i started 16 years ago, i hiked off 35 pounds. it was a way for me to get out of a gym environment that was a little intimidating for me. i've been doing this for 16 years. and my husband is captain sullenberger, who landed in the hudson river. and on the day before he left on that trip back in 2009, the economy was very bad. we thought we were gonna sell our house, and we were gonna move in base back east. and we didn't want to do that. and so we had gone on a hike near our house on a hill, and it was in the evening. the sun was setting. and we walked up to the top of that hill, and we looked out over the valley. and he turned to me, and he said, "looking out there makes you feel like anything's possible, doesn't it?" and i said, "yeah, it does." clouds came in, and we walked down. we went to bed. he got up in the dark the next morning and left on the four-day trip that ended in the hudson river. >> are you serious? oh, my gosh. >> and he called me after -- the first time he could call me after they had gotten out of the river. and he said, "do you remember sunday night what we were doing?" and i said, "yeah." and he said, "do you remember what i said to you?" and i said, "yeah." and he said, "well, this isn't the anything i was thinking of." >> [ laughs ] >> i said, "yeah. me, neither." but i just think it speaks to the power of the outdoors and nature and what it can do. and after he got back and after the initial craziness left, the very first thing we did was we went back out on a hike. >> well, let's get moving. i like it. i love it. wow. that's powerful, lorrie. >> so, one of the really fun things that i've done with groups before is bingo hikes. so, get your kids out. it's like a scavenger hunt. but you can actually go online and print out these nature bingo cards. and so the kids can look for a round rock or a blue feather or, you know, something like that. >> oh, how fun. you know what i like about hiking is you're using your entire body as you're working out, as you're walking. >> you know, if you use poles, which i don't often use poles, but if you use walking sticks, they say it burns 20% more calories, as well. >> we've taken our girls -- we've got two little ones -- on hikes, and i love that it's a workout that the whole family can do. >> well, and you also can talk and communicate. just think -- you don't have your phones. i think it makes for really quality family time, as well as teaching them about lifestyle activity without having them do, you know, exercise. >> right. >> okay. this is it. this is the rock that i was telling you about from this top. isn't this great? >> this is gorgeous! >> is it as advertised? >> this is better than advertised, lorrie. this is spectacular. boy. gorgeous. >> great, isn't it? i could stick to this, where going to the gym at a certain time, i couldn't do. but this, i could do. and this, i just want to share with everyone. >> coming up, the perfect weekend getaway just a car ride away. >> cheers. strawberry margarita. >> oh, my gosh. >> yum. >> dream right there. is the home of "wow" savings. (tires screeching) ( ♪ ) ( ♪ ) to the next generation of greats. from high school stars, to college athletes and fans. we're excited to meet you. >> welcome back to the show, everyone. i'm almost to my next location. all i need to do is park. and parallel parking in the civic couldn't be easier. ♪ hey, guys. i made it. it was such a beautiful drive. and right now, i'm about to find out what makes capitola village a perfect getaway. ♪ >> you know, capitola is so beautiful, year-round. and there's so many fun things to do. you park your car once. you can go shopping. you can go out to eat. you can go to the beach. there's surfing. there's stand-up paddling. there's fishing out on the wharf. it's romantic. it's picturesque. you can walk from wherever you're staying and walk to the beach. and you can go and grab something to eat. and you can go and rent paddleboards or take a surf lesson. you can do anything, and it's all right here without ever having to get back in your car and go anywhere else. and you will be in heaven. there's plenty of lodging. there's hotels right in capitola village, again, walking distance to everything. there's the capitola venetian hotel, which is the one that i think everybody recognizes, with the pretty, little bungalows that are right on the beach. there's a variety of vacation rental properties, from places that are appropriate for just two people to a whole family. and then, there's the gorgeous inn at depot hill. ♪ it's turn of the century railroad depot that's been converted into a bed and breakfast inn. gorgeous rooms, all with a travel theme. what a romantic place to stay. >> oh, cute, the little one. [ gasps ] i know one of your favorite -- one of my favorite things to do is shop, carrie, right? >> i love shopping. i could shop all day long. >> and so we're gonna go visit some shops in capitola village, right? >> oh, there's so many great shops. whatever it is that you, you know, are looking for, maybe if you're not looking for anything -- you just like to go and window-shop -- there are so many great places to go. and you're gonna come away with something that you're always gonna remember your trip to capitola by. >> for 10 years, i only made necklaces. >> and one of my favorites -- capitola reef. super cute beachwear. >> oh, look at that. cute. >> jewelry. speaking of jewelry, toe rings. >> okay. well, let's do it. >> let's do it. >> have you ever had a toe ring before? >> i have not. is it like a wedding ring? like, if i put it on my left toe, i'm married? if i put it on my right, i'm not? i don't know. >> no hidden or specific meaning to either foot at all. so it's just up to you, your preference. most women do the second toe, the toe next to your big toe, this one here. is that okay? >> [ laughs ] >> are you ticklish? >> yes. [ laughter ] >> okay, well, it's only gonna take a second here. >> okay. >> so, that's perfect. >> well, thank you very much! >> you're so welcome. thank you. >> oh, this is gonna look cute in my sandals. look at that. i might have to change my accessories, though, to match my toe ring. thank you, devin. >> you're welcome. thanks for coming in. >> thank you so much. okay, we've been busy in capitola village, doing some shopping. and i've worked up an appetite, so carrie's brought me to margaritaville! [ laughs ] >> sign me up. ♪ and here we are. >> well, that's service, i'll tell you what. >> this is the shadowbrook. this is the famous shadowbrook. it's the most romantic restaurant i think in the whole world. >> i love the tram! >> taking the little cable car down to the restaurant is so much fun. and it's a beautiful walk, traversing the gardens. >> and where does this let us off, the tram? >> this lets us off right at the bar entrance. ♪ >> welcome to the shadowbrook. here's your wine. >> thank you. >> you're very welcome. please enjoy. >> thanks. >> this looks great. >> it does look great. okay, before we dig in, 'cause this looks really, really good, tell me a little bit about what you know about the history of the shadowbrook. >> it opened in 1947 with the theme of being a romantic restaurant. and over the years, it's just maintained that since 1947. i think it was voted in the top 100 most romantic restaurants in the united states. ♪ >> i can't find a better way to end the day. >> isn't this great? >> yes, we are. >> but first, i want to find out a little bit more about you two, 'cause you guys have an interesting story. you two grew up in mexico? >> yes. >> yeah, we're from the same town. we're from cuernavaca. and long story short, we moved out of cuernavaca. never thought we would end up with someone from the same town. and 14 years later, we re-met in boston, and here we are, 21 years later. >> wow. >> after three kids, a few restaurants, a few guacamoles made already -- [ both laugh ] >> i'll be darned. that's fantastic. so, tell me why you guys got into restaurants. >> you know, we both are absolute passionate about food. and quite honestly, we would have a lot of people over at our house, and they would always ask, "wait, is this mexican food?" and the truth of the matter is that we never felt that there was a true representation of authentic mexican cuisine in san francisco, especially at that time, 12 years ago. >> well, this looks so good. this has been sitting in front of us as we've been setting up. so, i understand eduardo's gonna walk us through -- [ laughter ] >> i don't think so. >> you don't think so? come on. >> i don't think i'll deliver what you're looking for, so i'll let my beautiful wife do the honors. >> sí, so, what i wanted to show you is how easy, i mean, it is just to make a guacamole. >> okay. >> so we'll just start with, you know, scraping the avocado. so, we'll take the avocado and a half, 1 1/2 spoons of onion, get some tomatoes. we will do some jalapeños, a spoon of cilantro. and we'll squeeze the half lime. smash the avocado. now we're gonna taste it. i'm gonna give you a taste of this delicious guacamole. >> ooh, that looks good. >> okay. >> the tortilla's still warm! >> okay, so, the tortillas are, like, warm tortillas, corn tortillas, like, mixed with just -- is that delicious? she's tasting the beautiful flavor of the tomatoes with the lime and then the nice cilantro, the jalapeños. >> it's not too spicy for you? >> no. no, i like things spicy. oh, my gosh. i haven't eaten today, so... >> oh, that's perfect. >> go ahead. keep talking! >> that's perfect. ♪ >> okay. so now you're gonna make a couple variations of the guacamole, correct? >> yes. >> should i move this over here for you, eduardo? >> okay. i'm gonna have the pomegranate, which is my favorite. so i'm gonna do this. and then i'm also gonna do a little bit of the seeds. >> those are pumpkin seeds? >> the pumpkin seeds that are roasted. >> oh, yum. >> so look how cool that looks. i'm gonna grab two pieces, three pieces of bacon. >> oh, my goodness. >> and there we go. that looks good, no? >> yeah, that looks good. >> the marriage of two perfect things, bacon and guacamole. >> that's so beautiful. okay, so, i'll do one in a sweeter side, where we add the mango, all the mango. and then we'll mix the pomegranate. and the tangy and, you know, the sweeter. so we'll just mix these. >> i'll mix this, too. >> you know, i think we're good here. we're just gonna put the pepper just for fun. and here you go. >> freshly made corn tortillas. >> it makes a big difference. >> oh, my goodness. >> and they're making them all day long, so you always get them no more than 20 minutes after they come out. so they're always nice and delicious. >> thank you both so much. >> thank you so much for having us. >> i'm so happy to have you here. and now it's time to enjoy the guacamole that you can try all the flavors. >> wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. i'm already thanking you, and we forgot one important thing. >> which is? [ cheers and applause ] >> this project was built and completed back in 1980, so 37 years into the project. and it really was time to really be able to make this project last another 30 to 40 years. and we recognize just the value that it has played to the people that we serve. certainly, our roots that go back 45 years in this community. and, again, we are really proud of the pioneering efforts that we've made to really bring this concept of housing and services together. >> the timing of the on lok renovation couldn't be better. affordable housing and care for seniors in the bay area is rare. >> there are many, many people looking for housing, many seniors who are looking for housing. san francisco happens to be a tight market. it's difficult in the bay area. housing is expensive. construction is expensive. but we feel that we have a commitment. we've continued the commitment, and we'll look at things that we can do in the future in order to serve the needs of our seniors. >> and the investment shows. many upgrades were made to the building, including new windows, lighting, painting, and handrails in the halls. in the apartments, there are new cabinets, counters, appliances, and bathroom upgrades. >> in this rehabilitation at powell house, we will have spent, when all is said and done, approximately $10 million. it's financed. it's not money that we actually put out of pocket ourselves. but it is money that we will pay back. it's a big commitment for us. >> the founders of on lok house had incredible foresight when they decided to stake a claim in this community back in the late '70s. in fact, some would say they were pioneers. >> the co-founders, marie-louise ansak and dr. william gee, were trying to come up with a solution to respond to a need that we recognize in the community, which was as seniors aged, and they became ill, and they needed more care, where were they gonna go? >> we acted like we weren't there. but he knew we were, 'cause he was sending me texts like i'm outside, you haven't left your house since 6:00 a.m., i know you're inside. you better answer. you better come answer. and he was walking around our house. every single window he tried, every single door. >> what was he saying when he's out there? >> "i'm in front of your home. you better have your gun because i brought mine." and then we're very, very scared so we're actually going around the house just to make sure everything is locked. we're like, "is he going to bust out the door and come in and then shoot us?" >> reporter: the two terrified young women barricade themselves in the bathroom. while baillie gets text messages like this, "you tell the cops and it won't end well for you." >> how scared were you? >> scared. we sat in the bathroom and we were both crying and we didn't have anything to protect ourselves. >> were you afraid you were going to die? >> yes. >> did you think of calling the police at that moment? you're in the house, he's outside circling the house. why didn't you just call the police? >> could they really protect me? in an e-mail he says, you think the cops can get to you faster than i can? if i'm breaking through your house and i have a gun loaded coming at you, you think they're gonna save you? >> reporter: she says after about an hour of prowling around outside the house, carter finally leaves. and soon issues a warning shot of sorts. >> later that same day, craig carter sent a text to bailey gibson, with what appeared to be a gun barrel in his mouth and the message, "bye, i love you." now he later said that it wasn't a gun barrel, it was just a pipe. but if you're baillie gibson in that moment i'm sure it was unnerving, to say the least. >> reporter: then about 30 minutes later another text. "i didn't have the balls to pull the trigger. you win." for baillie's best friend julie it is the breaking point. she's had enough. and decides it's time, time she says they turn the tables on their tormentor of a track coach. so she helps baillie hatch a plan to secretly record him. >> i told baillie, i'm like, this is not right what he's saying. you should take your phone honestly and record this and send that to the authorities. >> you want her to have evidence? >> yes. >> reporter: so when carter angrily calls julie's phone looking for baillie, they secretly hit the record button. >> the only way i could get your attention is if i -- threatened. here i'm the bad guy, because i threatened. >> you should have never put your hands on me. >> well, actually i probably should have killed you. >> reporter: for more than an hour, carter threatening and desperate. inchts wanted your attention. i wanted you to love me. you were in a [ bleep ] game with me the whole time. that is wrong man. i'm going to make you pay. i know exactly where you're going to be. every day. so don't tell me that you're going to call the cops. because when you are going to call them? because i'm going to bust through your window, with a shotgun loaded coming right at you? you gonna call 'em real fast? think they'll get there in time? i just want to hold the pistol to your head and then what? i guess you would have to blow me away, right? should we try that? >> it was an incredible phone call in that he made several damning threats. craig carter, more than anything is trying to get baillie gibson to meet him one last time for a sexual encounter. >> i make sure i [ bleep ] you one more time. >> reporter: baillie agrees to meet her coach later that week but carter doesn't leave her alone instead sending her a series of hostile e-mails. >> i'm like a mountain lion who stalks his prey before he kills. we will see if you're smart enough to do what's wrong or what will cost you your life. >> craig carter's action were not rational by any measure. this is a guy who was coming unhinged and the e-mails he sent to baillie gibson were so graphic and so disturbing unlike anything i've ever seen a coach send an athlete. >> reporter: then, two days later coach carter ambushes her outside one of her classes. >> i turn around and he's right behind me and had this smirk on his face like i caught you. i said i don't want to talk to you and he said you can either do this the easy or the hard way. >> reporter: it's a consequential mistake. there are plenty of witnesses. one student even calling 911. >> university police this is claudia. >> harassed by a male? >> yes. he was saying things like you need to leave here with me and like trying to pull her away. >> reporter: thanks to that 911 call campus police are now actively investigating. >> at that point the university of arizona was coming to grips with the fact that one of its coaches had issued some serious, serious threats to a student athlete. >> reporter: it doesn't prevent carter from sending baillie this e-mail. >> you just dug your grave. >> baillie says she had become numb to his threats, but this one is unlike any other. >> that's what i should take away, something that matters to you, like your mom. i don't have to hurt you, i can hurt somebody else that means a lot to you. >> i could have cared less if he killed me, but when he brought in my family and friends that was the main part that was like that could happen. >> reporter: finally baillie calls her mother and reveals her deep secret. >> i was crying. i tell her everything at that point. i'm so distraught. i was like i just want you to love me. i don't want you to think bad of me. >> she arranges to meet up with herb her paints at a relative's home in las vegas. >> i just held her and she cried. that night we went to bed and she woke up i don't know how many times screaming in the night. it was, don't kill my mom, don't kill my mom. >> she said, i didn't tell you because i didn't want you to quit loving me. that's hard. >> reporter: next, coach carter is in the interrogation room. turning the tables. >> she was the one that was, you know, kind of coming on to me. >> reporter: and surprising texts from baillie that appear to bolster his claim. >> reporter: to some people that sounds like a girl who maybe has a crush on her coach. stay with us. whitens my teeth or... a toothpaste that ...one that's good for my teeth? >> well it's easy when you're trying to protect your life. >> reporter: another puzzling detail? turns out, when bailee finally told campus police about her situation, they understood it to have begun as a consensual relationship, and bailee first tells them it all began on campus before those olympic trials. she says what she told us happened in oregon is in fact the true story. within two weeks, carter is indicted by an arizona grand jury on four felony counts including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and stalking. he pleads not guilty, but curiously, no sexual assault charges are filed. >> these prosecutors believe they can prove the stalking and box cutter incident but sexual assault would be tougher for them to win. >> reporter: craig carter is released from jail on bond and resigns from his coaching job. just as baillie returns to arizona to graduate. she says the excitement of the day is overshadowed by fear. what are you thinking as you're getting your diploma? >> please don't let him be in the crowd and shoot me on the stage. please can i just walk across it and get my diploma and be safe? >> reporter: the college graduate's special day comes and goes without any carter contact. but at one point she does receive a text. this one not from carter but from his wife. >> what did she say? >> will you just please stop this. you know he's a good guy. >> reporter: joanne carter pleading with baillie texts, i know of craig's actions which i'm sorry and i'm asking woman to woman to not make anything worse for us. she's apparently standing by her man even after her husband admits to a three-year long sexual relationship with a student. >> even if this was consensual, him being coach and her being student makes it a violation certainly of ncaa rules. and potentially worse. there's no question that this relationship in and of itself was an abuse of power. by him. towards her. >> reporter: six months after carter's arrest baillie files a civil suit alleging that carter committed acts of rape and that the university of arizona, the head track coach and athletic director failed to protect her from inappropriate sexual conduct. greg byrne wouldn't comment for this report. >> the essence of the report against coach carter was you did this to me. against everyone else is you could have and should have stopped this. >> reporter: reporter john barr investigated the story for espn's "outside the lines." >> we spoke to a number of different attorneys and all agree that the university of arizona just did the bare minimum when it had information that there was something inappropriate going on. >> reporter: arizona residents may be interested in this tidbit. school, they're obligated to because u of a is a state school, they're obligated to foot the bill to defend that civil suit including carter's defense, more than $600,000 to date. >> you can understand why taxpayers in the state of arizona are saying what? we have to help foot his bill? >> reporter: in a statement to abc news the university of arizona said it took immediate action after baillie spoke up about carter. and it and the athletics department condemn his behavior and the impact it had on a student. coming up -- >> you admitted to grabbing her and threatening her with a box cutter. >> you don't know that she got in my face and pushing me and saying hit me either. >> reporter: in a stunning interview when we come bac if you've got a life, you gotta swiffer >> craig, this is john barr calling from espn. >> reporter: embattled former college coach craig carter declines to talk to us on camera about the baillie gibson case, but he does speak with espn's john barr on the phone. >> do you feel like you've been portrayed unfairly in the media? >> oh, yeah. they're portraying me to be this guy that raped this girl for three years, when all along it was consensual. i've read a bunch of this crap, and 90% of it is garbage. >> are you denying that you sexually assaulted her? >> oh, 100%. >> reporter: what did you make of that conversation? >> well, he was surprisingly candid. he didn't deny that he had a sexual relationship with baillie gibson, but he maintained that it started as a consensual relationship and continued as a consensual relationship. he acknowledged that he put his hands on baillie gibson that day in his office. craig, it's my understanding you admitted to grabbing her and threatening her with a box cutter. >> i don't deny it, no. but, as far as touching her, i never touched her in my life, until that day. you don't know that she got in my face and was pushing me and saying, "hit me, hit me, hit me," either, you don't know that. now you do. ask her about it. how she got in my face, and yelled, "hit me, hit me, hit me," and then shoved me. >> reporter: baillie denies provoking her coach. carter also admits that he violated arizona school policy. >> you were not supposed to have any kind of relationship with a student athlete. >> yeah, well, people mess up. >> reporter: what about those pictures? she says that he held these pictures over her head. >> he absolutely denies that he blackmailed her. >> reporter: but carter is doing more than just denying sexual assault. he's lobbing accusations back at baillie, countersuing the former athlete for defaming him. >> craig carter has filed a counter lawsuit against baillie gibson, alleging that she initiated, and enthusiastically pursued a sexual relationship with him, with the intention of destroying his career and family. >> reporter: they're saying that you're lying. that you aggressively pursued him, knowing that you were going to wreck his career and wreck his family life. they're blaming you. >> yeah. it's ridiculous. how can i wreck his marriage when he knows what he's doing? i've never, ever, had an affection feeling towards that man. ever. >> reporter: as he continues his fight in court -- carter is now living with his family back in utah, awaiting trial, with no monitoring bracelet. and as for baillie, though they're hundreds of miles apart, she's constantly looking over her shoulder. >> i'm still depressed. i still have my hard times. i'm back home and i see a car that looks like his and my heart stops. he could come to my home anytime. >> reporter: a broken young woman, a would-be champion, now just fighting to survive. >> if you woulda asked me at the beginning what my life was gonna be like?
