Reporter the housing battle in san jose is reaching a boiling point. Fight, fight, fight reporter the city council is expected to vote on a new apartment rent ordinance today. About half of all apartment u t units in san jose are covered by rent control, 140,000 People Living if them. When the city put in place the apartment rent ordinance in 1979 it limited landlords to an 8 annual increase. Last year the city Council Voted to reduce it to 5 . Today theyre expected to vote on whether to keep it at 5 or attach it to the Consumer Price index. With limits on the top and bottom numbers. Both options allow landlords to pass on building improvement and maintenance costs to tenants. Council member peralez wants the annual increase tied to inflation because incomes are not keeping up.
