the fda is issuing an alert about this popular candy. and meet the other george papadopoulos, the man who shares a now famous name tries to explain himself to the internet. a good tuesday morning. we begin with reports of a furious president trump after the first indictments in the russia investigation. >> ex-campaign chair paul manafort and his former deputy now under house arrest after pleading not guilty to charges connected to their business dealings. but the first evidence of possible collusion is coming from another former trump adviser who apparently cut a deal after lying to the fbi about russia. we're now just learning about it. abc's janai norman is joining us from washington where things are pretty busy this morning. good morning, janai. >> reporter: absolutely, kendis and diane. so special counsel robert mueller handed up the first indictments in the russia investigation. we expected that, but then came the unexpected news, that guilty plea from a former adviser to the trump campaign. >> did you commit a crime? >> reporter: former trump campaign chairman paul manafort and one-time deputy campaign manager rick gates both charged in a sweeping 12-count indictment of conspiracy against the united states, money laundering, and failing to register as agents for a foreign government. >> did you collude with russia? >> reporter: both former campaign leaders pled not guilty to the charges unrelated to their ac on the trump campaign.viti worng but the biggest break in the investigation led by special counsel robert mueller, the revelation that former trump campaign foreign policy adviser george papadopoulos worked with suspected russian agents then denied it to the fbi. >> george papadopoulos, he's an oil and energy consultant, excellent guy. >> reporter: papadopoulos seen just a few seats from donald trump at a national security meeting pleaded guilty earlier this month to lying to the fbi and has been secretly cooperating. according to the fbi in april 2016, russians told papadopoulos they had dirt on hillary clinton and thousands of e-mails long before they were made public. the day after that meeting, donald trump gave his first foreign policy speech with an emphasis on russia. >> i believe an easing of tensions, an improved relations with russia from a position of strength only is possible, absolutely possible. >> reporter: and according to court filings, papadopoulos reported to four senior campaign managers or policy advisers as he worked to try to set up a meeting between then candidate donald trump and russian president vladimir putin. diane and kendis. >> all right, janai norman live from washington, thanks, janai. so for now the president is trying to distance himself from his former associates. white house press secretary sarah sanders dismissed papadopoulos as a low-level volunteer saying he played a limited role in the campaign and she insists the charges have nothing to do with the campaign itself. abc news political director rick klein has more on what these developments mean for the trump white house at least going forward. rick. >> diane and kendis, the trump presidency is no longer controlled solely even primarily by president trump. bob mueller taking control, using his special counsel's office to now direct a brand-new set of investigations that's all throughout the trump operation, maybe even up to the white house itself. in taking on and indicting president trump's former campaign chairman and his top deputy, the clear message, the clear implication is that nothing is off limits. the president and his own finances could potentially come on to the table, and more intriguingly, a junior level aide who has now pleaded guilty and is cooperating with authorities, the question is who else is cooperating? did he wear a wire? are there other people he will implicate in his explanation of the facts? this probe is very clearly now getting much larger before it gets smaller, and the clear indication from bob mueller is that he will look anywhere and anything -- and at anything that leads him from the directions that he started even if that means going far afield from his original mission. he is not going to stop until he pursues every lead that gets at the truth. diane and kendis. >> and, rick, clearly he'll look at anyone because the mueller investigation has now led to the resignation of a top democratic lobbyist. tony podesta has stepped down from his lobbying firm after the firm was referenced in the paul manafort indictment. manafort is accused of using the firm as part of a pr scheme for pro-russian/ukrainian clients. podesta's brother john was hillary clinton's campaign chairman. we're also hearing new revelations about russian sponsored content on social media during last year's election. facebook executives will testify on capitol hill today that a russian group posted more than 80,000 times during and after president trump's victory, and that content reached as many as 126 million people, far more than previously disclosed. meanwhile, twitter has now identified nearly 3,000 russian linked accounts. that's nearly 14 times the number first disclosed, and today google is expected to identify 18 youtube channels linked to russian influence, but it describes only limited activity on the accounts. there are some new comments about the civil war from the white house chief of staff john kelly that have been getting a little bit of attention overnight. kelly appearing on fox news and was asked about confederate monuments. he called confederate general robert e. lee an honorable man who gave up his country to fight for his state. and kelly did not place the blame for the civil war on slavery. >> the lack of an ability to compromise led to the civil war, and men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand. >> and martin luther king's daughter reacting overnight claiming kelly made a fight to make slavery sound courageous. some controversial comments over night from kelly. a federal judge has partially blocked president trump's ban on transgender people serving openly in the military. the judge issued a preliminary injunction that halts both the ban and transgender recruiting efforts. it's now up to the government whether to appeal. the judge did uphold a provision that bans federal funding for sex reassignment procedures. convicted army deserter bowe bergdahl admits he made a mistake. he deserted his post in afghanistan and was then captured by the taliban. during the sentencing phase of his trial monday, bergdahl said he never intended for anyone to get hurt while searching for him. president trump has called him a traitor who should be executed. the judge says those comments by the president could be grounds for a lighter sentence. the u.s. says it has captured a second militant who planned the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. mustafa al imam was seized during a raid by special ops in libya. he's being returned to the united states for trial. four american officials including an ambassador were killed in the 2012 attacks. time now for a look to pieces. luckily, nobody was inside at the time. still no doubt heartbreaking for that family. farther north the white mountains have been bracing for mudslides there as well. just a very difficult time for those people all over that northern area. >> yeah, several inches of rain in those parts. well, coming up, the health benefits of a popular food called into question this morning. that story we told you about. the international academy of television arts and sciences says it will not honor spacey with a special founder's emmy. in the meantime, netflix says "house of cards" will end after the upcoming season. but it says that decision was made before the allegation came to light. harvey weinstein is facing new backlash in his sexual abuse scandal. the producers guild of america has taken the unprecedented step of banning him for life. this comes as new accusations push the time line of alleged abuse back into the 1970s. president trump has reportedly chosen the next chairman of the federal reserve. he's expected to name jerome powell who is already on the board of the central bank. powell has supported the current fed chair's policy of slowly raising interest rates. the fda is making the rare move of proposing to revoke the heart healthy claims of soy protein. since 1999 foodmakers have been allowed to slap those claims onto their products that contain that ingredient, but the fda is now saying the evidence that soy protein actually lowers heart-damaging ldl cholesterol is inconsistent. it's the first time the agency has ever attempted to retract a previously authorized health claim. and on this halloween the fda is warning people who love black licorice not to indulge too much because it could cause major health problems. the fda posted this video warning people over 40 to limit their intake of black licorice to a maximum of two ounces a day, otherwise, you risk risk developing high blood pressure, swelling or even congestive heart failure. that's because a compound a compound is in the licorice root that lowers your body's potassium levels. as halloween is approaching many were visiting candy stores including this black bear in gatlinburg, tennessee. there was no une inside mahalia's candies at the time. the bear left the store without any tricks or treats. >> nothing? empty handed? >> nothing. >> come on. they could have given him a sam ruskin and he is being hailed a hero for rescuing that man whose boat capsized off the coast of florida. 13 years old and as you can see the entire incident was actually captured on drone video. >> the camera was rolling as those waves pulled the boat underwater and just as all the whole thing unfolded, sam was surfing nearby about his cousin and saw the boater get tossed in the water and
