>> the nba teams. yes. >> they're all over the place. it's really confusing. man, but they're so hopeful. the knicks are in first place and in last place. we begin this half hour now with the nba but with the nfl's attempt to deal with the players kneeling during the anthem. >> so owners and the union today are huddling in new york. the league says it's looking to move on from the issue which sparked some comments from the white house. >> in the meantime, players want to make sure they won't be punished for a protest designed to highlight racial inequality, not disrespect to the american flag. here's abc danya bacchus. >> reporter: out of work nfl quarterback colin kaepernick now taking a stand against the nfl, accusing the league and team owners of colluding to keep him sidelined. the reason says his taking a knee protest. against police mistreatment of african-americans during the national anthem. a grievance against the league alleges teams wanted to seen him only to mysteriously go silent with no explanation. kaepernick's actions created a movement and fueled a national debate about free speech and the national anthem. >> get that son of a [ bleep ] off the field right now. out, he's fired. >> reporter: last month, the debate intensified when president trump lashed out at nfl players who joined the protests. despite players and their defenders insisting they are not disrespecting the anthem. >> you're disrespecting our flag and our country. >> reporter: more than three dozen other quarterbacks have been signed since kaepernick hit free agency. his attorneys say the nfl violated the league's collective bargaining agreement, saying he's an ideal candidate. having played six seasons with the 49ers leading them to the super bowl. >> he has got to have actual evidence, something tangible to show that two teams got together or a team and the league got together and said we got to keep this guy out of the league. >> reporter: the nfl hasn't commented. and on tuesday in a rare move, the nfl owners have invited players and union reps to attend their meeting in the hopes of finding a compromise to allow players to continue protesting without alienating the fans. diane and kendis? >> donya, thank you. and a federal corruption probe has officially cost rick pitino his job as head basketball coach. and rick pitino's contract was terminated yesterday. he isn't named in any probe complaints, but his contract was violated. he won the national championship in 2013. >> big deal there. moving on now, president trump waved off reports of republican infighting as he made a joint appearance with senator mitch mcconnell. >> the president gave no warning before holding a long and wide-ranging news conference to tout his friend championship with the man he once called a weak leader. he insists the republican party is very unified. >> reporter: a show of unity in the rose garden. >> my relationship with this gentleman is outstanding, has been outstanding. >> reporter: the president previously used twitter to criticize senate majority leader mitch mcconnell for not getting an obamacare repeal and replace bill passed through the senate. even before lunch, president trump sympathized with his former chief strategist, steve bannon, who's vowed to wage war on the gop establishment and mitch mcconnell. >> i can understand fully how steve bannon feels. and i'm not going to blame myself, i'll be honest. they are not getting the job done. >> reporter: but just a few hours after saying the republican party should be ashamed of themselves, the president changed his tune. >> the republican party is very, very unified. this man is going to get it done. and i think get it done long before anybody else. >> reporter: and the apparent contradictions come as congress faces a daunting to-do list before the end of the year. they want to tackle tax reform and protection for dreamers. the president wants congress to strengthen the iran deal and health care reform, all this as they still need to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling. >> obviously, passing the budget which enables tax reform and tax reduction comes next. >> reporter: president trump says he and mitch mcconnell are closer than ever before and he also said democrats are extremely unified, slamming them for what he calls being obstructionists. kendis and diane? >> and speaking of the president, his approval rating on the u.s. response to the recent hurricanes has plummeted since hurricane maria devastated puerto rico. a new cnn poll was taken after the president criticized the mayor of san juan. and many puerto ricans struggle without electricity and clean water. apparently 44% of americans say they approve of how the president handled the response. that's down 20 points from a month ago after hurricanes harvey and irma hit texas and florida. and president trump appears to be pointing the finger directly at cuba for a series of mysterious attacks. the attacks impacting the health of nearly two dozen american government workers in havana. the u.s. had not assigned blame to cuba for what many are calling sonic attacks. but officials say they believe the cuban government could have stopped them. now president trump seems to be going even further. >> i do believe cuba's responsible. i do believe that. and it's a very unusual attack as you know. but i do believe cuba is responsible, yes. >> it is not clear if the president is saying cuba is actually behind the attacks or responsible because they failed to keep americans safe. meanwhile, the u.s. is calling for calm on both sides after iraqi forces pushed kurdish allies out of disputed city of kirkuk seizing oil fields and other facilities. this comes amid rising tensions after last month's kurdish vote for independence. it could trigger a civil war inside iraq. newly-released 911 calls reveal the chaos inside a nursing home in florida. increasingly frantic workers made several calls on behalf of patients, but only once did a nurse mention that the air conditioning was not working. at least 14 deaths have been blamed on the sweltering heat inside the hollywood hills nursing home. staffers appeared to have problems answering the most basic questions from operators. >> how old is the patient? the person he called on to be the next drug czar. an investigator report revealed that pennsylvania congressman tom marino pushed legislation that ultimately cleared the way for the opioid crisis. it stripped the dea of powers to go after pharmaceutical companies sending drugs to the black market. the president agreed to reconsider the nomination and promised a major announcement on the opioid saying that nuclear war may break out on the peninsula at any moment. the ambassador says the situation has reached a touch-and-go point. he told a u.n. committee, the u.s. has subjected his in a minute nation to an extreme nuclear threat. he insist his country has the right to have nuclear weapons to defend itself. and the are russian president vladimir putin signed a u.n. order triggering sanctions against north korea. he did it while a delegation from pyongyang is attending a diplomatic event in russia. one north korean official called the sanction state terrorism, designed to destroy his country. and on the island of malta, mourners have turned out to remember a journalist killed by a car bomb. 53-year-old caruana galizia. she was called "one-woman wikileaks." she exposed the country's links to offshore tax havens through the leaked panama papers. she told police two weeks ago she was receiving threats. back here at home, the coast guard has suspended the search for a worker missing after an louisiana oil rig explosion. 44-year-old timothy morgan was a subcontractor on the rig. seven people were injured and four were released from the hospital. an investigation into the cause of the explosion is under way. and about 100 people are still missing in the deadly wildfires in northern california. firefighters say they're making progress against the fires thanks to calmer winds, and thousands of homeowners are heading home after mandatory evacuation orders were lifted. abc's clayton sandell has the details. >> reporter: the staggering death toll from california's wildfires added one more when a water tanker driver was killed in a crash. >> traffic medical for possible water tender rollover. >> reporter: the first fire fighting death in a week-long firestorm. >> this is day eight for these fires to be raging through napa and sonoma counties. fatigue is definitely a factor. >> reporter: the blazes have already killed 40 other people, carmen berriz and her husband armando jumped into a swimming pool last week trying to survive the intense heat and smoke. she died in his arms. >> no one should have to live through that violent furry. it is remarkable what my father has endured. >> reporter: there is progress, but flames are still spreading in these hard-to-reach areas. these water-dropping helicopters are critical because the terrain here is so steep, these narrow canyons it's hard for firefighters to get in. and you can see from the smoke there's a long way to go. those devil winds that created hell on earth are gone for now. >> we're going to [ bleep ] die, dude. we've got to get out of here. >> reporter: but are still on alert. >> this fire is still capable of turning on us. we have to keep working on it, stay vigilant and
