good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, september 24th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa arjen. >> good morning, caroline. we are warmer this morning thanks to the fog conditions and a dryer air mass. relative humidity will be decreasing as well, and we'll still be looking at high fire danger today. on tuesday, a red flag warning in the north bay above 5,000 feet. we could extend this in the east bay valleys. we are dry everywhere. look at the clear sky. very dangerous conditions not only today but it looks like through the rest of the month. 63 in the city. it is 61 in san jose. 51 the cool spot in gilroy, but this looks nice. later on today, low 80s in santa cruz, 59 novato, livermore 58. your forecast today calling for temperatures to be flirting with 80 by noontime inland. we'll see the numbers quickly warm around the bay. 70s at the coast. it will be a beautiful beach day. really nice around the bay, it's just how warm will we get and for how long? i'll have the answers in just a few minutes. caroline? >> lisa, thank you. we're following breaking news of a deadly officer-involved shooting in san francisco. police say they got into a standoff with a man who was holding his wife and two kids hostage. police were called to an apartment on salmon street just off pacific avenue. around 11:30 last night they said they heard yelling and gunshots from inside the home. for hours police tried to negotiate with the suspect. they eventually broke into the apartment and shot him. the suspect died at the hospital. the wife and children are expected to be okay. . ♪ oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light. also breaking this morning a show of solidarity on the football field the day after president trump said players who kneel at the national anthem are disrespectful and should be fired. the baltimore ravens and the jacksonville jaguars are playing right now at wimbley stadium in london. when the national anthem played during kickoff, coaches and players linked arm and arm. nearly two dozen players knelt, most notably shawn khan and had donated $1 million to mr. trump during his election. he later criticized president trump for the ban on muslims in our country. the kneeling came from the u.k. the pittsburgh steelers plan to stay in the locker room during the national anthem at their game. and raiders players are expected to also protest tonight in washington. this morning the nfl network's ian rapaport tweeted, this will be powerful. raiders' offensive line, the only all african-americannit in the nfl plans to sit or kneel together during the anthem. president trump was up early on twitter this morning calling on sports fans to take action. he said, if nfl fans refuse to go to games until players stop, quote, disrespecting our flag and country, you will see change take place fast. fire or suspend. he goes on to say that nfl attendance and ratings are way down. boring games, yes, but many stay away because they love our country. league should back u.s. also on twitter trump repeated his call to fire players who refused to stand for the national anthem. roger goodell called the comments divisive saying, they demonstrate a lack of respect for the nfl, the game and its players. president trump shot back saying goodell's statement was trying to justify the, quote, total disrespect certain players show to our country. tell them to stand. san francisco 49ers jed york has also weighed in calling it callous and offensive made by the president for this great country we stand for. our players have exercised their rights as u.s. citizens in order to spark conversation and action to address social justice. bruce maxwell is the first major league baseball player to join the protest. he knelt at the national anthem yesterday after the president blasted nfl players for doing the same thing. maxwell said it was a decision that was a long time coming. he said mr. trump's rhetoric on twitter took the movement to styeerytweedated, inequality is being displayed bigger than ever right now as our president showst t of protest and speech is not allowed. maxwell talked to the media after yesterday's game. >> this was the right thing for me to do personally just from the endeavors i've been through myself and where i'm from and the people that i do know that have been victims of racial indifferences. >> if he wants to take a knee, take a knee. are you going to ban him like they did kaepernick? >> the players feel they have a platform to make a change, but the people that are striking back, they're seeing to me what the fabric of america is like. >> the oakland a's issued this statement which says the oakland a's pride ourselves on being inclusive. we respect and support our players' constitutional rights and freedom of expression. maxwell says he will continue to kneel during the anthem at future games. before the oakland a's, there was the dust-up between president trump and thearsupers curry, curry telling reporters he did not want to visit the white house as nba champs are traditionally invited to do. the president responded by withdrawing the invitation. abc 7 news reporter mongalesian has more on the back and forth. >> steph curry moves off the court on what prompted the president to report this tweet. going to the white house is considered a great honor for a championship. stephen curry is hesitating, therefore, the invitation is withdrawn. the team had decided not to visit before president trump's tweet. >> this is not what leaders do. >> reporter: curry's teammates quickly coming to his defense and pushing the conversation away from political affiliation and instead toward something bigger. >> there was a respect for the office and also a respect not only from us but from the president himself. >> as for going to call every player that takes a knee a [ bleep ], i'm like, huh? we're talking, what? that don't even make sense to me. >> draymond green is talking about this. >> i say get that son of a [ bleep ] off the field right now. he's fired! >> the players are kneeling for police brutality and equality during the national anthem. >> the warriors will travel to washington, d.c. in february to play the wizards. they'll also use that trip to, quote, celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion. oakland raiders punter king stands in solidarity. he posted this picture yesterday. he is holding a sign outside the white house that suggested president trump can invoke his invitation, too. the raiders are in the d.c. area for tonight's game against washington. free speech week at uc berkeley was supposed to start today. officially it's been canceled. but conservative speaker yanopolous plans to speak, anyway. >> reporter: the commentator held a press conference it secret location and posted it on facebook live. he said he was blindsided when the group pulled its sponsorship. he plans to still speak outside the town hall sunday with or witout their concentration. >> the administration has done everything in its power to crush students' aspirations. students will graduate knowing less than they did as freshmen, but you have to give the school credit. they are masters at bureaucratic dealing. >> the university plans to let the speech go on. they released a statement saying in part, the university was prepared to do whatever was necessary to support the first amendment rights of the student organization. this included spending more than $1 million if necessary to provide the resorts to keep students safe. >> no hate in the bay. >> reporter: protesters gathered at 69th and adelineadelineadelie rally in the bay area. organizers said their message goes beyond free speech week. they're uniting against white supremacy and fascism. >> we don't want any kind of hate or violence in our communities. >> reporter: protesters welcome the recent cancellation of events but want berkeley officials and the university to take a strong stand against racism and violence. they plan to be back out protesting on sunday. abc sunday news. >> we'll be forecast. > happening today, a popular having a special sunday brunch to raise money for the victims of the mexico earthquake. the owner of cala also owns a restaurant in mexico city. that restaurant has been serving free food to rescue workers and volunteers. today cala restaurant will charge $100 for sunday brunch and drinks. the fundraiser will be held from 11:00 to 4:00. all of the money will go to the red cross, unicef and topos, the mexico volunteer rescuers. police have arrested an orrville couple accused of leaving their 1-year-old son home alone while they went to a bar. they are facing charges of public intoxication and felony child endangerment. police say the couple was arrested at a bar after getting into a fight. they told officers their baby was home alone. he was found asleep in the living room and is now in the custody of child protective services. happening today, leaders in san francisco are searching for answers to a health crisis facing the city's african-american community. ucsf researcher jonathan butler tracks the health of different communities. he says the disparity facing the city's black population is clear. >> the life expectancy for african-americans are 69 years of age compared to a hispanic which is 85 years old. a white person is 81 years old. >> the naacp has helped organize a community meeting today at providence baptist church on mckinnon avenue in san francisco. leaders will look for answers to problems ranging from access to health care, healthy food and housing. it was a celebration 30 years in the making, an event to honor the female pioneers who became firefighters in san francisco. abc 7 news was in the south of market neighborhood as firefighters young and old swapped stories and memories. the first female firefighter on the force faced sharing bathrooms and common sleeping areas but persevered. >> all i wanted from them was to share their knowledge and they did, and when that happened, i was shocked, but they were very giving in their knowledge, which is what you need to be a good firefighter, so i was blessed i was at station 5. >> today the department has a female chief, 272 women in various ranks and the largest percentage of women on any force in the united states and the top five in the world. police arrested a woman after she fell through the roof of a san francisco liquor store. it happened at homrun lickers on ocean avenue. the owner said an ex-girlfriend would not leave him alone so he called the police. she ran upstairs and we'll let the owner take it from there. >> we were talking, having a conversation, and next thing you know she fell from the roof. i thought -- i had to pinch myself to see if i was dreaming. it was beyond comprehension, and i'm glad she didn't fall on my chihuahua because he was taking a nap. >> well, police came and put the woman in the back of a squad car. good morning to you. no fog out there. tons of sun and temperatures are warming quickly thanks to those north winds. you know, relative humidity already by the delta down to 27%, so that just gives you an idea of how dry it is out there. this morning we're warmer than we were yesterday at this time. not a lot warmer, and this will translate into warmer afternoon readings by about three or four degrees. look how pretty it is on the beach at santa cruz where yesterday you had the 80s for lows a lows. 64 in san francisco, 62 in oakland, 61 in mountain view and ha ilf moonn bay already at 57 degrees. uniform temperatures throughout most of the bayrea. should say the bay and inland with a lot of 80s to arrive today. 71 in santa rosa, in concord, livermore 68. once again today, it will be very warm out there and it looks like if you look toward the extended outlook, september ends next weekend. it looks like we're going to be warm right on through the end of the month. so hot fire danger not only through tuesday with the national weather service fire danger outlook, but looking at all week temperatures above average. here's a look at the highs today in the south bay. up by about 3 degrees in san jose. santa clara 84, 82 78 in millbrae. look at 70s at the coast and the city, upper 70s. about 7 degrees above average in the city. mid-80s today in petaluma, napa. 82 in vallejo. looking at upper 70s in oakland. head inland, mid-80s. not that warm but still warmer than it should be for this time of year. the atmosphere is so dry, it will continue to cool off overnight. i want to get an update on maria as it continues to hold on. category 2 with winds over 105 miles an hour. it is moving away from the bahamas but it's going to turn up some big surf along mid-atlanta. dangerous rip tides here. the forecast showing the temperatures coming today inland in the upper 80s. 70s at the coast. warm by a few degrees tomorrow and this will take us to tuesday. by wednesday and thursday, that should be the warmest days of the week. upper 80s around the bay. 90s inland. download the accuweather app and you'll notice the temperatures in your neighborhood really ticking up hour by hour. but when we do cool off, not so much. it's still going to be above ahead, not your avera here's a love story you don't hear every day. a san jose couple got married after many years together. the bride is 100 years old, the groom 85. they're both from mexico but met at a dance in san jose about 35 years ago. >> they are people of strong faith, and for them to receive the sacrament is to be in good standing with the catholic church. i see it more as a dream come true for them. >> the couple doesn't have any relatives who live in the area, so parish volunteers planned the wedding for them. four-legged friends rode the waifrz yesterday. about 40 dogs entered the surf dog competition. it was held in hunting ton beto. it's a fundraiser for several bay area charities. they held one last month in pacifica. meet rocket squirrel. >> hey, look at him go! the 20! (dog grunting, panting) is... is he okay? real people? living and breathing. hopefully not breathing like that. for all the things that keep you up at night, anthem blue cross has a solution. welcome back, everyone. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. hi, everyone. it's a beautiful start to the day, although we are warming up quickly and the atmosphere continues to dry out, decreasing our relative humidity, creating that high fire danger. 66 in vallejo, 71 in the delta, with relative humidity dropping to less than 28%. with all the warmth there, the national weather service issued a high fire danger warning for the north bay mountains above 1,000 feet. this is mt. sait. winds 20 miles an hour out of the north-northeast. that can easily start fires which can spread rapidly. we're having another beach day today. in santa cruz in the 80s, we're looking at temperatures that will continue to warm quickly. and with numbers in the 70s at our beaches, it's going to be a great place to be. numbers today by the afternoon in the mid-80less s inland with cool night ahead. developing news on this football sunday. nfl teams in solidarity against president trump. the baltimore ravens and the jacksonville jaguars just wrapped up their game at wimbley stadium in london. before the game during the national anthem, players and coaches linked arm in arm. about two dozen players knelt. this after the president said players who kneel are disrespecting the u.s. the jaguars owner, shadd khan, linked arms with his team. khan had donated $1 mill kwion president trump's campaign during the election. our sister station espn reports that the steelers will stay in the locker room during the national anthem. news reporter mary bruce has more on the battle between the president and pro athletes. >> reporter: this morning it's the president versus the players as president trump sparks a political war with professional sports. it started withab andhi ts profanity about football players like colin kaepernick who an t protest racial and nal social injustice. >> wouldn't you love to see one of these nfl owners when someone disrespects our flag to say, get that son of a [ bleep ] off the field right now? he's fired. he's fired! >> reporter: but there pntdesi a player wants the privilege of making dollars in the league, he or she should not be able to disrespect our flag and our country and should stand for the national anthem. if not, you're fired. find something else to do. the nfl fired back saying divisive comments like these display an unfortunate lack of respect for the nfl, our great game and all of our players. it's an unusually strong rebuke from a league whose owners collectively donated more than $7 million to trump's campaign. one of those donors, new england patriots owner robert craft, a close friend of the president. he says he's deeply disappointed by the tone of the president's comments and that he supports the players' right to peacefully effect social change and raise awareness in a manner they feel is socially impactful. trump is taking on basketball, too, after nba champion steph curry said he would vote against a golden state warriors visit to the white house. >> i don't want to go. that's really it. >> reporter: trump then beat him to it, disinviting him, tweeting, going to the white house is a great honor for a championship team. stephen curry is hesitating, therefore the invitation is withdrawn. lebron james said, you bum. he already said he ain't going. >> i think i'll bring people together. that includes blacks and whites and everything. >> reporter: now he's again inserting himself into the debate over race in america. mary bruce, abc news, washington. >> now, among the nfl teams that have not issued statements in support of players who choose to protest, seven have owners who donated to president trump's election campaign. here is a full list of those teams. the dallas cowboys, houston texans, jacksonville jaguars whose owner has not released a statement but as we noted, he did protest with his players today. the l.a. rams, the jets, the tampa bay buccaneers and the washington redskins. president trump and north korea are exchanging a fresh round of public insults this weekend. this as the pentagon sent a message to pyongyang by flying bombers and fighter jets along the north korean coast. abc news repter stephanie ramos has the latest. >> reporter: this morning there is even more tension with north korea after the president tweeted this overnight. "just heard foreign minister of north korea speak at u.n. if he echoes thoughts of little rocket man, they won't be around much longer." this tweet fired out after north korea's foreign minister slammed president trump for insulting north korea's leader, kim jong-un, saying he's committed an irreversible mistake. he says, in case innocent lives of the u.s. are harmed because of the suicide attack, trump will be held totally responsible. he called president trump a mentally deranged person, full of megalomania and complacency with his finger on the nuclear button. the insults between trump and kim jong-un are getting worse, not leaving much room for a diplomatic solution. >> what north korea wants more standoff or confrontation with the united states. >> reporter: in a show of military strength, u.s. air forceb-1 bombers and fighter jets flew off the coast on saturday. rex tillerson continued to say military options are on the table if the u.s. needs to defend itself. but those options would come at a high cost. >> any sort of phenomencon -- confrontation would be devastating given the toll. >> a u.s. poll shows most americans do not believe president trump can handle the north korea situation responsibly. take a look at these numbers a survey involving about a thousand americans found 62% do not trust the president. about three-fourths of the people surveyed support tougher economic sanctions against north korea. a majority opposes a strike on north korean military targets and offering financial incentives to north korea. the death toll from hurricane maria in puerto rico is now at least 10, and officials are struggling to communicate with tens of thousands of people downstream of a failing dam. maria toppled power lines and cell phone towers, leaving much ofsland without power. dozens of mayors met with puerto rico's governor to talk about the things they urgently need, including water, ice and fuel. a>re>> back from florida where they were helping to restore power lost during hurricane contain irma. it showed line workers returning after spending two weeks in the hurricane zone. some were surprised at the resilience and generosity of the people they were helping. >> they were actually offering us things and they had nothing themselves. out of power for days but they were giving us water. they were asking if we wanted food. they would offer us anything they could to help us out. >> the workers say they hope they left the hurricane victims in better shape by the time they left. new this morning, the mayor of san jose says the city's police department is getting stronger. the police departme struggled tontas h retain offic amid layoffs, pay cuts and battles over pension reform nc recession. mayor sam mcale published an op-ed in the news. he said the recruiting process is paying off. by the end of the year, 100 new officers will be on the force. mcardle said a pinch and reform process last year helped retain officers. he said the department must focus more on accountability and building trust with the community. still ahead on abc 7 mornings. the new tools in home security. what's different about choosing products from the installation to the response. here's a live look from our east bay hills camera. it is really going to be hot in that part of the bay today. in fact, everywhere as a heat wave takes hold. lisa arge throughout history, the one meal when we come together, break bread, share our day and connect as a family. you run for pthe pylon and do i have -- dive in for the touchdown. 16 yards to trent irwin. they go up to 20-30. then the dagger. brice love, fourth quarter, finds a seam. he's got speed and he is gone. 69 yards, 30 carries for 263 yards, his biggest day at stanford. the cardinal improved a 2-2 with a 54-38 victory. san jose state opening conference play against utah state. this game showed on facebook. second quarter, fourth and 3. knt meyers with a toss t gooing support tackling and go 43 yards for another touchdown. utah state goes on to win 61-10. spartan falls 1-4. the raiders in d.c. tonight. we'll have those highlights coming up later. that's the way the ball bounces. i'm mike shumann. have a great day. good morning. temperatures pretty mild right now with the atmosphere so dry we bottomed out into the 40s in many locations. but right now numbers are in the 60s. in fact, upper 60s in many spots. so we're looking at not only the warm air but numbers warming in. average high should be about 70. we've got low 60s in mountain view and san jose at 65. and half moon bay you were in the 40s earlier. look at that 72 in santa rosa with 70 in napa and the numbers continue to warm except for livermore. the outlyer there at 50 degrees. we cool off rather quickly this time of year, and unfortunately the relative humidity comes down as well. beautiful view exploratorium camera. we're not going to see the fog for quite some time. end of the month we're still looking warm. last week of september upon us right now, and numbers look to be warmest by about wednesday. so warmer days throughout the next week and we'll look for high fire danger right on through tuesday. according to the national weather service and those gusty offshore winds about 75 feet. temperatures will continue to be well above where they should be. we're looking at highs tomorrow near 90 around antioch and fairfield, and that warmth is just going to spread westward. looking around the bay into the low 80s and 70s at the coast today. so about two to three degrees of warming each day. by tuesday we've got mid-90s, mid to upper 80s around the bay. this is when i think we could see those 80s in san francisco bay. it's going to get pretty warm here on wednesday and we could even see 80 at half moon bay with 90s here. with that dry atmosphere we cool off very, very quickly so we'll be back in the 50s at night. west wind picks up later on. 61 degrees ocean beach. warmer ocean waters there. should be a beautiful day. and it's going to be a warm day over in oakland with mid-70s for you today. perhaps even 80 near the stands there. regionwide, all above average today with 74 half moon bay, 85 in concord. moving back to the cool numbers here, look at the 40s coming back into play even in oakland. it will be a comfortable night and we'll be looking at the accuweather 7-day forecast looking at the dry, dry weather each and every day. we'll look at temperatures at the coast coming up. 90s inland. the warmest day should be wednesday-thursday but slightly cooler toward the end of the week. but really, the fog does not want to come back so that's kind of sad. >> well, welcome to fall. thanks, lisa. a tech company that gave us smart thermostats and smart f our home.eras want to expan o reporter jonathan bloom was at the unveiling in san francisco as google's nest showed their new products. >> reporter: matt rogers cofounded nest with big dreams. so after putting smarts into thermostats, smoke alarms and security cameras, nest revealed the next place it wants to make waves. >> can you think of a better industry for us to disrupt?
