in france are investigating an attack by an armed gunman aboard a paris-bound train. it could have been a massacre if not for the life-saving efforts of three americans, all with ties to northern california. one from pittsburgh, one from sacramento and the third from oregon w he have the latest. >> in this dramatic exclusive video obtained by cnn you see you the gunman with his weapon nearby and injured while taking him down. potential terror attack happened on a train traveling from amsterdam to paris. according to reports, two u.s. servicemen, alek skarlatos and spencer stone, both with sacramento ties, heard the loading of a gun in a restroom and saw the man come out with the weapon. he came out shirtless with a rifle flung over his shoulder. he sprang into action and wrestled him to the ground. their mothers relieved. >> if they hadn't stepped up, there could have been a lot of deaths. >> we are very proud of them. >> anthony sadler was the third man who helped thwart the attack. he yelled "get him!" and spencer charged the gunman. three people were injured, including spencer. he said the gunman slashed him with a box cutter. >> he has some cuts on his back and tried to cut his eye out. >> his finger. >> finger. >> they each credit each other for saving their lives. >> he said i would have been dead in it wasn't for alec. >> >> i talked to alek and he said the same thing. if it weren't for spencer, i would be dead. >> the gunman's motives are not yet no one. he was taken into custody. a potentially deadly train ride that ended much differently because of the heroic efforts of three men. >> very big relief. >> stone is hospitalized and is reportedly doing okay. paris' anti-terrorism unit is now investigating. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. also this morning many people are concerned about their 4301ks after a brutal finish to the week on wall street, the worst in four years. stocks plummeted yesterday on fear china's economy is slowing and because of a dip in oil prices. index lost more than 1,000 points this week alone. the nasdaq lost more than 170 points and the s&p 500 dropped 64 points. investors are worried, particularly those at or near retirement age. >> recently the last year or so we had quite a few increases in the stock. so i hope it didn't take it all away. >> economists warn the worst things you can do is bail out. >> you have to look through the ups and downs in the market. strategically you should be diversify your assets. this is blocking and tackling. >> the recent reduction in the value of china's currency weighed heavily on how the market reacted this week. 6:03 is our time. >> a planned parenthood clinic in san jose accused of harvesting organs from a late-term fetus that was aborted and using it for research. it was recorded at a group in san jose. it called center for medical progress. it recorded it from the group in san jose. they have been posting videos that planned parenthood claimed were obtained illegally but yesterday it was ruled at the can be used publicly and an appeal is in the works. abortion opponents are planning a nation-wide protest against planned parenthood in morning 47 states and 300 cities. there's one planned for 7:00 at the planned parenthood in concord. a san francisco area is now afraid of leaving their richmond neighborhood at night, not because of muggers, but because of racoons. they were attacked and saved by a neighbor who came to their rescue. abc7 news reporter, sergio quintana has the story. >> patty said that she is and her husband went down monday night to let their dog get one last walk and that's when a raccoon pounced. >> so i started to swing the dog around trying to get it off. >> then a pack of racoons attacked. >> then i got another one on my other leg. at this point i'm in the middle of the street and i look up to see where is my husband, how come he's not helping? i look, and he's it throwing. racoons are just jumping on him. >> their neighbor came to their rescue with his golf club. >> i was running down the hill going. [yelling] [ >> i was down the hill and i heard the yelling. >> wong said he used his club to bang on the garbage cans that were left out for trash collection night. patty suffered several bite wounds and scratches. she and her husband are going through a series of rabies treatment. melanie is an urban wildlife expert in san rafael. she said people shouldn't be concerned about racoons attacking. this is very unusual. >> typically the only time they would come in contact with a problem animal again, someone has been hand-feeding them and they are used to people or a mom defending young and she feels threatened. >> upset that her neighbors could do more to help with the wild animals if they lock their garbage cans and stop feeding the racoons. >> in san francisco, sergio quintana, abc7 news. >> authorities are warning pet warners to be careful if you are visit lake mendocino. a pig with rabies was found and it's a form of herpes that is transmitted through fluid or feces and can be carried on shoes or clothing. and watch out if you like to swim or live in the russian river. health officials have issued warnings after discovering the first-ever samples of blue-green algae. the algae poses the greatest threat to pets and children. health officials say that the best thing to do is to avoid the water altogether. high temperatures and the drought are ideal conditions for the algae according to officials. police in daly city are on the lookout for an older man who molested a child at a popular mall. a surveillance video shows the man they are looking for. police said he inappropriately touched a juvenile inside the restroom. he's described at 70 to 80 years old and was seen driving away in a silver honda. >> san francisco police have released surveillance video to help find six people who attacked a man aboard a muni bus. the unprovoked assault happened early morning on july 24. this happened on the 5 bus stopped at folsom and masonic. three people punched or smacked the man as he left and police identified one suspect, an 18-year-old, but he has not yet been arrested. the home season for the niners begins tomorrow and there are valid concerns about the turf trouble at levi's stadium. why the dallas cowboys are worried about playing there. ♪ >> taylor swift's two concerts shook the grass right out of the dirt at levi's stadium in santa clara. >> now left which they plan on filling over the weekend. they had 50 openings before a job fair on wednesday. district officials say they don't anticipate expanding class sizes because they have now hired flags. this video shows a small tattered piece of the american flag left on the post outside of the post on pearl street. they also cut a pow-mia flag completely off the pole. it happened late yesterday night or early in the morning. the flags had only been up about three weeks. happening today, distracted drivers in napa beware. police seen here passing out christmas brochures will be using extra officers to catch people driving while using cell phones or other electronic devices. data proves distracted driving can be a killer. in 2012 more than 3,000 people died because of distracted driving. napa police say even using a hands-free phone can make driving more dangerous because it takes the driver's attention off the road. a flood of insects that invaded the desert where burning man being set up has spread into california. they are being drawn by the lights in the nevada desert, as well as eastern california. the state ag department took samples thursday and found out they were false sinch bugs. they emit odors like a stinkbug, and they can bite, but pose no health risk. >> i think with the weather patterns we've had with the rains and stuff, that changed the food source, which are the weeds and stuff on the desert, so that they grew and then produced the insects and now we have them at this time of year. >> officials expect their numbers to drop before burning man starts on august 30th. fire crews continue mop-up work on the tesla fire burning near livermore. cal fire says that the wildfire is now 75% contained. the fire that broke out wednesday, broke out 2500 acres. it spread near and around homes but only one uninhabited home was destroyed. cal fair is having to fight it with fewer crews because of the fires all across the state. 6:16 is our time. civil disobedience will be the order of the day in san francisco. a group will hold a protest to help save the last undeveloped plot on telegraph hill. it's just below coit tower and on the gilbert steps and offers a spectacular view of downtown. the protest begins at 10:00 this morning on the northeast side of the hill. the committee to build the park will be kickoff a petition drive to gather signatures for a ballot initiative to stop the development. >> friends and family will gather this morning to help raise money for a low-income breast cancer patients. she was a reporter at ktvu and she died in 2003 after a long battle with breast cancer. abc7 news reporter carolyn tyler was her friend and she's part of the organization, keeping the memory alive through others facing a similar challenge. >> she came together with a group of us in the media and said she wanted us to do something who helped women who had fewer resources than she had to deal with the disease. >> the friends of in the overcast. upper 50s from napa and novato. cooler in the north bay. 53 with the gray sky toward concord and livermore. here's a look from the exploratorium camera. you see the overcast. a cloudy start. mild to warm this weekend, justify the way we like it. 60s and 70s. some 80s in the inland east bay. and temperatures come back up to near average. trending a little bit below over the weekend. and here's why. look at the low cloud deck. it's going to be banking up right along the shoreline again. and that will allow for a good, steady sea breeze. gets a little breezy around the bay by midday. a you will in all that's our typical summertime pattern where we get the usual spread. about a 30 degrees spread with 60s at the coast. and finally an area of low pressure up in the gulf of alaska, one to the south. that's allowing for the high to stay at a moderate strength. it's not going to build like it did and that allows for the quiet pattern. and temperatures really quite comfortable with that steady on shore push each and every day. little variation. it's going to be very persistent as we go through the rest of the weekend and into next week. 80 in san jose. 79 in santa clara. on the peninsula plenty of upper 70 eats for redwood city and palo alto 78. los altos 67, half moon bay. the water temperatures still above average in the low to mid-60s. upper 60s downtown, partly cloudy. the north bay notice the orange getting toward cloverdale and lake port with 80s, maybe upper 80s there. 77 castro valley and fremont. you head inland, 83 concord and 87 6.0 napa earthquake is this coming monday. a lot of repairs have been paid but there's still more to do. we have the story. >> if this crumbling wall were in italy or greece, someone would describe it morning in an effort to diffuse tensions. the talks began 30 minutes after a deadline impose bid north korea, demanding that south korea stop playing messages from loud speakers along their border. there were shells fired this weekend and the south returned fire. a former ambassador said the latest escalation is dangerous. >> i think we are really into a crisis moment right now, and i'm not sure there's an easy way to de-escalate this at this point. >> the latest tensions began earlier this month when two south korean soldiers were maimed by landmines. mines the united nations says were planted by north korea on the southern side. 6:33 is our time. while southern california tries to lure the raiders away from the bay area, the developer work to go keep them in oakland has submitted his final proposal to the city. >> a key deadline has been met. developer floyd kephart said he submitted his final coliseum package to oakland, who will have several weeks to analyze it. >> the next couple weeks we will review all the material and be ready when the supervisors and city council comes back from recess and we will inform them of our findings. >> he admits it's still an uphill battle to keep the raiders and a's in oakland as part of a over billion dollars package that would see a new stadium for each. retail and housing at the current coliseum sites. >> we are trying to find hundreds of millions of dollars to make it work. >> no details on how he would close the $400 million funding gap that does not include paying off existing coliseum debt or buying almeda county out of the deal. still "save oakland sports" president is confident that oakland can keep both the raiders and the a's. >> money is not the issue. it's the political will. can we get all the players together and make it happen? he says he will come up with the money. i don't want to see them strain the city financially to keep them, but i'm hoping that something can come out of it. >> kephart confirmed he volunteers will repair fencing, prune trees, and install drip irrigation at the bernal heights community gardens. it will this morning and last until noon. a $20,000 grant from disney, abc7's parent commute. you know the backup when you cross from oakland to san francisco. the timed metering lights help with the traffic but they have glitches and sometimes they appear to create congestion, even when traffic it light. >> that is what causes the traffic when it's red and there's no need for it. no traffic at all, we have to stop and that's the build-up, the backup, and we are like why? so that is a big problem. now caltrans is working to make them more responsive to current traffic conditions. the $7 million project is the first major update since 1974 when the lights were installed.
