and trouble for taylor. the new video that has the "shake it off" superstar shaken up this morning. swift seeing red after a fan grabs her during a concert. how she managed to go on with the show in style. ♪ shake it off ♪ and good morning, america. let's get right to the news starting with that scene that is so scary and so sadly familiar these last few months, another attack at an american movie theater. >> yeah this time it was outside nashville during a showing of the movie "mad max." police and s.w.a.t. teams wasting no time descending on the scene. >> abc's steve osunsami there right now. he starts us off. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. this is now the second shooting at a movie theater in the last few weeks and people who were inside thought they were going to die. without question, this is making people across the country even more nervous about going to the movies. >> he pulled out like a hatchet and started attacking this family and then pulled out a gun and we all ran out of the theater. >> reporter: police say this is the man who sent people running for their lives at a nashville area movie theater 29-year-old vicente david montano. witnesses say he stood up in the middle of an afternoon showing the new "mad max" movie wearing a surgical mask and two backpacks and carrying what police say now was a fake gun. he started hitting people with this hatchet and blasting them with pepper spray. around 1:13 p.m. the first 911 calls came in. >> it was a lot of shots. it was coming from the side of the theater. >> reporter: just minutes later an officer nearby responds. police say montano is firing a plastic gun that shoots plastic pellets but say it looks and sounds like a semiautomatic pistol. officer jonathan frith shoots back but with real bullets. montano answers him by filling the auditorium with pepper spray as terrified people inside the theater run. the police force him out of the theater where a small army is now waiting and firing. he dies in a hail of gunfire. one of the theater's customers wounded in the shoulder by that hatchet says he's thankful no one else was seriously hurt. >> i would also like to thank all of the citizens who gathered around us, helped my daughter when we were pepper sprayed. that kind of gives me a little bit more faith in humanity again. >> reporter: police have yet to share a motive but underline this is the second attack at a movie theater this summer and they worry. >> this is maybe what we call the new normal, and we can't just shut down america. we carry on. >> reporter: police say this man had a history of mental health issues and given what happened in aurora and lafayette where people were killed they're thanking the police. george. >> they got there so fast. steve, thanks very much. we'll move on to breaking news in the search for that malaysian airlines flight that went missing a year and a half ago. officials this morning say they have recovered more debris that may be from flight 370. as malaysian officials say a piece of wing washed ashore is from that plane, french officials will not confirm that yet. abc's david wright is in paris with all the latest. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, lara. we still don't know if that new debris is actually from flight 370. only one confirmed piece of the plane so far, and for the family members, understandable frustration at the mixed signals. they have the big answer they need but still so many questions. on reunion island new reports of wreckage handed over to the authorities here in france. >> we knew -- >> reporter: malaysian officials say it appears to be a plane window, some aluminum foil and some other items. but this is the only confirmed piece of the jigsaw puzzle conclusively identified by investigators as a wing flap from a boeing 777. there's only one plane of that type unaccounted for in the world, proof enough for the malaysian prime minister. >> flight mh370 tragically ended in the southern indian ocean. >> reporter: but sources tell abc news the investigators here have not been able to match a serial number to the part. [ speaking a foreign language ] raising here it's a strong presumption the part is actually from the plane. we still don't know why the plane crashed or where, and even though the wing flap washed up on reunion island, the currents could have dragged it an ocean away from the crash site. >> the real answer to what's happened to this airplane is sitting at the bottom of the ocean. >> reporter: for those family members waiting so long, more frustration. >> i'm not disappointed. i'm disgusted. i think the whole 17 months has been horrible. it's been handled appallingly. >> reporter: even now still not the answers they need. >> it's a very painful thing to go through. not knowing anything. >> reporter: as for that new debris still unconfirmed, the french investigators will be having a strong look at everything hoping that if they get more pieces of the puzzle, they may finally have some answers. george. >> we certainly hope so. okay, david, thanks very much. we're going to turn now to tonight's main event, the first presidential debate for the republican. the top ten candidates face off in cleveland, the very same arena where one of them will be nominated next july. abc's tom llamas is there and, tom, i've never seen a debate this early with such high stakes. >> reporter: that's right, george, and good morning. usually it's lebron who brings the action at this arena but tonight it's the republicans, and as you mentioned, there is so much hype, so many people and so much trump. this morning, republican candidates hard at work preparing for tonight's debate, but not the front-runner, donald trump. a senior adviser telling abc news, trump doesn't rehearse. the billionaire, who is still in new york, has been lowering expectations. >> i've never debated before. i'm not a debater. >> reporter: telling george wednesday that he doesn't plan on throwing the first punch. >> i don't want to attack anybody and, you know, maybe i'll be attacked and maybe not. i'd rather just discuss the issues. >> reporter: overnight "gma" getting a first look at how the candidates are gearing up for the debate. >> i like to be mentally focused. >> i take my new phone thanks to the donald and listen to motown. >> before a debate i go out to run. it's a great way to relax. >> before a debate, i normally call my mom to get advice. >> reporter: the lighthearted videos made by the conservative news website independent journal review. >> let me check on that. >> reporter: tonight the top ten candidates will fight to break out and fight for time. only two hours including commercial breaks, that's only about ten minutes per candidate and some may try to draw a difference with trump now dealing with a damaging report. trump spoke with president bill clinton on the phone about his political inclinations just weeks before he jumped into the race, a sign he may be too up close and personal with the clintons. >> i wouldn't be surprised if in the course of the debate, this conversation about bill clinton and how genuine of a republican or how real authentic a conservative donald trump is, i think it could easily become part of that equation. >> reporter: now, there are more than ten republican debates and right now 17 candidates, but this debate is important. you'll remember during 2012 so many republicans either skyrocketed or collapsed because of a debate. george. >> yeah, one candidate had to drop out after the first debate. okay, tom, thanks very much. let's break this down with jon karl starting out with that phone call. depending who you talk to it was a courtesy call or a strategy session. >> if you listen to the trump people, they told me that this -- that president clinton said trump would have a huge impact on the republican party if he were to get involved, that he would be a disrupter, somebody that could have an impact on the entire political system. if you talk to the clinton people, they say the 2016 race didn't even come up, but, george, this call happened in late may right after hillary announced and just a couple weeks before trump announced. >> meantime, you know, i was struck by one of the fox moderators said. he said we don't want to make this the donald trump show but it is. >> it is. they both get a minute to respond to questions but if their name gets mentioned by another candidate they get an extra 30 seconds. every time you mention trump's name he gets another 30 seconds. facebook is out with this, starting from the bottom up, scott walker, about 3 million people talking about him, ted cruz, about the same. bush, 5 million. bernie sanders, about the same. hillary clinton, 11 million. look at trump's number, 26 million. he basically has twice as many as hillary clinton and jeb bush combined. >> so, the other candidates don't want to give him more air time, but they all have to be ready. >> yes, especially jeb bush, who will be standing right next to trump at center stage. >> okay, jon karl, thanks very much. >> and every time they utter his name, another chance. >> another 30 seconds. >> for him. going to have to come up with a nickname. all right. moving on now to that monster storm tearing through the pacific ocean. take a look at this image of it from space taken by astronauts scott kelly. at its peak it was the strongest storm of the year. now it's headed straight for land. ginger zee has all the latest. >> yeah, the current satellite takes it just east of taiwan, look at that thing, it's moving only at 12 miles an hour and will target taiwan in the next 24 to 36 hours. that's going to be the worst of it and the heftiest side of that storm is usually the right side, so northeast corner, the coast where the storm surge, flash flooding, talking noon tomorrow our time and just after and then it'll make into the strait of taiwan and eventually east china but taipei is what we're concerned about this morning and one of the world's tallest buildings is there and our neal karlinsky is on top. >> reporter: we're way up near the top right now and being in a 101-story building made of glass might seem like a terrible idea in the middle of a typhoon but they insist it can take it. they've been built to withstand 134-mile-per-hour winds but this typhoon might come in with winds up to 140 miles per hour. >> neal was talking were the gusts at 140 miles per hour. but when we put the sustained winds, the constant wind of 100 plus miles per hour, fortunately taipei is on that one side of the mountain so may have a little protection. i'm mostly concerned about flash flooding, some of the smaller villages at the bottom. this is going to be a big storm and we'll be talking about it for the next 36 hours. >> i'm sure we will, thank you, ginger. turning now to a major security breach at the new orleans airport where a driver crashed through a fence right onto an active runway. abc's jim avila has the story. >> reporter: is this a warning to america's airports? a simple sedan takes out two fences at new orleans louis armstrong international airport. making it all the way onto an active runway. >> down on the taxiway there. do you know who he is? >> we don't even know who that is. it's a random vehicle. >> reporter: the dark blue dodge challenger with a 23-year-old male at the wheel penetrated airport security, jamming through one fence and onto the tarmac. then as police approach, the driver almost immediately gunned it again and punched through a second fence, finally arrested just off airport property charged with hit-and-run and drunk driving. no other airport damage done and no planes even delayed. but just this spring the associated press found america's airport perimeters had been breached at least 268 times since 2004. some of them caught on tape like this driver being chased by police right onto the massive dallas/ft. worth runway or this san diego runway incursion by a pedestrian in full view of a pilot and his passengers and, of course, there was this famous runway incursion in philadelphia where a jeep driven by another inebriated man led police on a chase through the airfield. these runways are supposed to be secure, and some airports do have ground sensors, but as we saw in new orleans too often all that's between planes and trouble is a chain link fence. lara. >> that's scary. jim avila, thank you so [ sirens ] >> reporter: this morning, newly released police dash cam video showing the final moments a former college athlete jonathan ferrell's life. watch as north carolina officers responding to a breaking and entering call pull up to ferrell. you can see the red light from a taser appearing on ferrell's shirt. then he begins running. >> get on the ground. get on the ground. get on the ground! >> reporter: moments later a burst of police gunfire. then eight more shots. [ gunfire ] after ferrell was already down, killing the 24-year-old. >> shots fired. shots fired. >> reporter: the video played during the trial of charlotte police officer randall kerrick facing voluntary manslaughter charges for the 2013 shooting. prosecutors saying he used excessive force. police say ferrell had just crashed his car when he went to a nearby home for help at 2:30 in the morning alarming the homeowner. >> there is a guy breaking in my front door. >> reporter: officers say when they arrived ferrell charged them. >> he started coming towards the officers. >> reporter: defense attorneys saying ferrell behaved aggressively and officer kerrick feared for his life. but prosecutors say ferrell, who was unarmed, was the one afraid and was running away from the taser light, not towards officers. >> who polices the police when they do wrong? >> reporter: kerrick has pleaded not guilty facing up to 11 years in prison. for "good morning america," mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> mara, thank you. and we turn now to that bizarre case of mistaken identity. a group of bounty hunters raiding a home in phoenix. on the hunt for a fugitive but as it turns out, they got the wrong guy, the police chief. abc's t.j. holmes is here with the story. good morning, t.j. >> yeah lara how do you you mix these two up? the bounty hunters looking for a guy described as a black male, 6'3", 300 plus pounds. they show up on the front door of a guy who is 5'10", 175 pounds and white. well how does that happen because the bounty hunt ersers believed something they read on facebook. >> open the door. >> reporter: bounty hunters trying to capture a fugitive they believe to be hiding inside this house. their target described as a 6'3" black male weighing 310 pounds wanted in oklahoma on drug charges. following a tip that came in on facebook, the group of 11 bounty hunters armed with handguns descended on this phoenix home late tuesday night. >> turn your light off. >> reporter: the man inside the home refuses to let them in instead his girlfriend calls 911. >> 911, what is your 347b8g? >> we have some -- i don't know if they're bounty hunters or what they are, but they're -- they just banged down our door and looking for somebody. >> reporter: when police arrive it's not a fugitive placed under arrest but one of the bounty hunters instead because the home they were surrounding did not belong to their fugitive after all. it belongs to this man, joseph yahner, the chief of police. >> once the situation got de-escalated, one of the individuals that remained there that we booked into jail ultimately was still refusing to leave the home, was demanding that he identify himself, even though he clearly didn't match the description of the individual that they were looking for, which was a very heavy-set larger black male. >> reporter: brent farley has been charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct. police say he had his weapon unholstered during the confrontation refusing to leave the property after he was told the fugitive was not there. he has not yet entered a plea. authorities now looking into the tip that led the bounty hunters to the home of a police chief and touched off this bizarre case of mistaken identity. now, in many places bounty hunters do have some broad authority to arrest at least the person they're going after but critics talk about they're not regulated enough in some states and in particular in arizona they don't have specific laws. one person put it, you can be 18, a high school dropout, no training and go out and start arresting people, and that's how mistakes like this can be made. >> boy, sure is. okay, t.j., thanks very much. take a look at this. it's a new hoverboard everyone is talking about. you see it right there. a million views on youtube. michael will show you what happened to these guys in a moment in "the speed feed." but first we want to get a quick check of the weather from ginger. >> update on the rocky fire in california talking about it for days. firefighters working so hard they've made progress. now 30% contained. almost 70,000 acres burned though and red flag warnings just east of sacramento up in the sierra, part of nevada, northern california and right there into southern oregon. we're going to see along that midlevel low some lightning and certainly some wind. flood watches in the >> good morning, i am meteorologist mike nicco. it will be warmer than average and humid today. 67 at the coast and 95 inland from 10:00 tonight through 5:00 tomorrow we have a chance of scattered showers and storms. have a great >> all that weather brought to you by liberty mutual. and this is not just a picture of a plane. it was parked here because it was too hot in phoenix. it made it to 112. their fuselage was too hot. you don't need a plane when you have a hoverboard, do you, michael? >> it was critically important. we realized the risks. i would be injecting myself with the very hormone that my tumor feeds on, and even with all of those risks, we knew that this was our last best chance. >> reporter: the then 41-year-old deciding along with her husband to create and preserve five embryos, but by 2013, their marriage unraveled, findley filing for divorce. tell me about the consent form that you signed. the focus is on that one line that says, in the case of divorce, the embryos would be unfrozen and discarded. >> that's right. >> reporter: that signed consent form, a leading silent witness at the trial now determining what should happen to the embryos. findley asking the court to enforce it as a legally binding contract. >> it's still an agreement. agreement is in this document at least 27 times. >> reporter: and order the embryos destroyed. findley also testifying his concern that his ex-wife would "manipulate the situation to extract money for other purposes," a claim which lee denies. on the opposing side, lee's argument that signing the consent form does not prevent her from changing her mind. pleading for the preservation of the embryos, the now 46-year-old says are her last chance to have children. >> i have biological children ready to come to life. >> she's got a powerful and compelling moral argument, but because she signed that document, she's in a tough spot legally. >> you've made it very clear that you do not expect stephen to be a part of these children's lives physically, logistically and more specifically financially. correct? >> correct. >> your ex-husband's lawyer said it's not that stephen doesn't want to have children, he just doesn't want to have children with mimi. >> those are hard words to hear from anybody. >> what was it like being in the courtroom after all you had been through together? abc's linsey davis here with the story. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, george. that's right. specifically this story alleges an affair with the nanny. now, according to "people" magazine, staff there say sources have told them that affleck admitted to garner that he had not been faithful in the past, but he categorically denies these accusations with the nanny. explosive new claims in "people" magazine's cover story about ben affleck and jennifer garner's split. sordid details about an alleged affair with the nanny, christine ouzounian, allegations he denies. >> sources close to christine say that the nanny is in love with ben and that they've had an ongoing relationship. >> reporter: ouzounian seen here sharing a laugh with affleck outside of his home several weeks after the announcement of his divorce took care of the couple's three children. >> is it true that jennifer found you? and by avoiding shopping via apps, are we missing out on big deals? well, to find out i've got to buy some clothes. shopping on your phone, okay, first off the screen is kind of small. most people will window shop on the phone but they don't hit the buy button until they get on a computer. how come? ah, expiration, security code. entering your information is laborious. okay, this part, it's just a pain, and in a study by comscore shoppers said they struggled to find discount codes on their phones. >> i do probably about 90% of my purchases on my mobile device. >> reporter: but guess who loves to shop via smartphone millennials, especially fashion bloggers, so we turned to some of youtube's finest. >> hi, my name is sonia castenada. >> hey, guys, casey holmes here. >> reporter: first the case for mobile. they see shopping as entertainment. >> i discover a lot of new products because it's just literally in the palm of my hand. >> i probably find at least 40% more items online than i ever would if i was shopping inside the store. >> it's fast fashion. >> reporter: next they tackled two of the big complaints with one solution. instead of shopping on your phone's browser -- >> most big retailers have an app on the app store and they also save your credit card most of the times. >> reporter: if you do end up needing to buy through the browser -- >> i just am obsessed with using ypal. it fills in all of the billing and shipping address which i know i hate filling out. >> reporter: sonia uses apple pay, a similar service that's gaining traction. >> you just have to set up your card information once and after that everything is shopping at a click of a button. >> reporter: finally they say shopping through a retailer's app offers more discounts and rewards than trying to find promo codes. >> they offer push notifications to let you know when things are on sale, providing coupons and things like that. >> reporter: so i took their advice, used the app, hit the buy button. the moment of truth. i like it. and you know what, buying on my phone was actually a lot easier and more fun than i would have thought. now, one of the biggest reasons people say they don't buy on their phones is they worry about security. but the truth is, data being transmitted over a cell signal is more secure than when you transmit your credit card info and your personal details on wi-fi and as all the credit card hacks in the news have told us, george, the weakest link is how the retailer secures your financial data, not how it's transmitted. >> yeah. we have certainly learned that. so it's easy and it's fun. you're satisfied. how about savings?
