and we begin with new hope in the mystery of the missing malaysian passenger jet. >> the experts are saying they're confident that the wing part found by the man on a tiny french island of africa is from flight 370. >> the debris is already shedding light on what may have happened to the plane. many saying its condition supports the theory that it was a deliberate act, but it's not expected to lead investigators to the rest of the wreckage. abc's bazi kanani has the latest. >> reporter: a critical clue loaded into an evidence van now on the way to france while helicopters search the shores of reunion island for any other debris that might have come from the missing malaysia jetliner. it's not confirmed if a suitcase found nearby is connected to the plane that disappeared nearly 17 months ago. but this morning, investigators have few doubts about the origin of the six-foot-long wing part. a source close to the investigation tells abc news this number was on the piece of wreckage, and it matches a boeing 777. only one is missing in the world, malaysia flight 370. the newly discovered wing part is called a flaperon used to help the plane turn and to slow it down for landing. its condition leading experts to believe someone was alive and at the controls of flight 370 when it crashed. >> it must have landed in water at slow speed, because if it had hit at very high speed, this flaperon would have been a ball of metal. >> reporter: the floating flaperon was found at least 2600 miles from the search area for the plane. it is possible the plane's debris could drift that far, but it is not possible to trace it back to exactly where it came from. >> it does not lead us back to where that airplane is resting on the bottom. it does not tell us what happened at the end of this flight. >> reporter: experts say until the rest of the wreckage is found, especially the black boxes, the grieving families of the 239 people on board will keep waiting for answers. bazi kanani, abc news, washington. >> bazi, thank you. >> months ago u.s. intelligence agencies had put together an assessment on the crash saying they believe it was not an accident but a deliberate act by someone in the cockpit. >> that conclusion seems to be in line with the initial clues but an exhaustive cia review of the passengers and crew has turned up nothing suspicious. also breaking overnight, hot, dry conditions fueling at least 14 major wildfires in california. >> one of the largest is the rocky fire northeast of sacramento. overnight, it grew to more than 13,000 acres, and it's destroyed at least three homes. hundreds of people have been evacuated and the blaze only 5% contained. and residents are also out of their homes further south because the willow fire north of fresno, that blaze has consumed nearly 4,000 acres. more than 7,000 firefighters statewide are battling these wildfires. and also in northern california, a grass fire tore through a mobile home park. seven residences were destroyed and half a dozen damaged. residents say the fire moved so quickly, all they could do was watch. no injuries were reported. new developments in the cincinnati police shooting that has sparked so much outrage. the former police officer charged with murder is out on bond this morning. ray tensing's attorney says he's received offers from all over the country from people willing to put up the money, and the attorney also says tensing is getting death threats. here's abc's michelle franzen. >> reporter: ray tensing quietly left jail thursday night. the former police officer posting a $100,000 cash bond, the 10% required of the $1 million figure set by the judge. >> he was dressed out, given his property, and he was escorted out the door. >> reporter: authorities saying he appeared to be in a state of shock despite leaving jail uneventfully. >> you understand you've been charged with one count of murder and one count of voluntary manslaughter. >> yes, your honor. >> reporter: tensing was in court earlier in the day pleading not guilty to charges he murdered 43-year-old sam dubose. the deadly encounter captured on the officer's body camera. >> but i didn't even do nothing. >> go ahead and take your seat belt off. stop, stop. >> reporter: dubose unarmed was shot once in the head. the 25-year-old officer claiming in a police report he was being dragged by the vehicle and had to fire his weapon. police releasing body cam video from two responding officers, at least one showing tensing on the ground moments later, but he gets up, chases the car, which rolls 100 yards before crashing, video showing tensing looking into the driver's seat shutting off the engine, then moments later he radios in. >> i almost got ran over by the car. he took off on me. i discharged one round. >> reporter: prosecutors say that body cam tape tells a very different story. >> this is without question a murder. >> reporter: tensing's attorney insisting instead the university of cincinnati cop feared for his life. michelle franzen, abc news, new york. well, it was a rough day at dallas/ft. worth airport. first an american airlines jet about to depart for chicago was evacuated after smoke appeared in the cabin. three passengers were injured slightly while using the emergency slides and the landing gear on a spirit airlines jet caught fire while landing. the flames were put out quickly and the 178 passengers were all able to get off the plane at a gate. an intense manhunt is underway in western pennsylvania for an escapee suspected of murder. police in rural pittsburgh describe robert crissman as extremely dangerous after running away from a work release program. crissman is suspected of killing a woman he knew who apparently did not know he escaped. the district attorney says drug use may be behind crissman's violent behavior. and we're getting new details about last week's theater shooting in louisiana. surveillance video shows the gunman, john russell houser, coming and buying a ticket to a showing of the movie "trainwreck." 20 minutes into the showing he began shooting killing two people and wounding nine before taking his own life. at least six different people called 911 from inside the theater. >> 911, what are you reporting? >> there's a shooting at grand 16. >> how many shots have you heard? >> like six or seven. he shot right at people. >> he was shooting at people? >> yes. >> in the last reporting released, a caller tells a dispatcher, we need more ambulances at the grand theater. a week later authorities still have no idea why houser opened fire. former president george h.w. bush says he's feeling much better two weeks after falling and breaking a bone in his neck. the 91-year-old tweeted a photo and an update saying who knew jumping out of planes was safer than getting out of bed. thanks for all of your kind well wishes. now, doctors expect him to make a full recovery, but look at that spirit. >>
