i am hoping for a miracle. i am. >> holding out hope for a san francisco teacher missing for more than a week in the wilderness of el dorado county. good evening everyone. 46-year-old ed cavanaugh is a teacher at downtown high school. he went dirt biking with a friend and has been missing since the two parted ways. abc 7 news reporter spoke with cavanaugh's colleagues and sister tonight. melanie? >> reporter: they're distraught and holding on to hope ed will return home. his sister tells me there will be a national guard flyover tonight. using special thermal imaging technology to potentially low kate him -- locate him. downtown high school where students come when graduation can seem out of reach. filled with extraordinary teachers. >> ed is very unique. gruff on the outside, but there is a marshmallow inside. >> reporter: ed cavanaugh's combination of hard/soft has endeared him to nearly everyone inside classroom 12 and beyond. the teacher led more than 20 ten-day backpacking trips with dozens of students. all the more reason his disappearance on a rock creek trail in el dorado is confusing. >> i know ed has all the skills to survive in the wilderness. my only concern is that he is a diabetic. >> reporter: by phone, ed's sister says he would never ride without insulin on him. the question whether or not he has enough. >> it just doesn't feel like a real experience. >> reporter: word of what seems like a bad dream spread by text between teachers. >> we are counting the hours until we see hip.m. day in day out. whatever it took to get the kids a lot of whom had quit on school to get them back into the school. >> reporter: no one is giving up on ed. >> we don't want to stop until he come home. >> ed. we can't wait for you to come back so we can hear your extraordinary story. >> reporter: ed's teacher family expects him to share with studentsstew students when they return next month. >> happening now, one mile of high wave one in pacifica is closed after a head-on crash. a live look at the highway. we have seen major backups throughout the night. all lanes are shut down. in both directions. between sassler and kresley drive. two people are hurt. police are calling it a major injury crash. two cars were involved. both are badly damaged. the highway is expected to reopen in a few hours. >> a small plane went down just after departing the san carlos airport tonight. the redwood city fire department tweeted the picture you. can see the plane in a slight nose-dive position in tall grass. the faa says there was one person on board. that person was not hurt. >> developing now a new wildfire is burning north of interstate 80 in nevada. the lowell fire started at 2:30 west of alta. the fire has grown to 4,000 acres and there are mandatory evacuations. 600 firefighters are doing everything they can to stop those flames. >> you have a very large response on the fire. with conditions. so dry. we are hitting it with everything we have. very large air attack as well. it is difficult to get access on the ground. we have a lot of air tank making drops. coppers making water drops. doing everything to slow down the fire. >> investigators are trying to find a white jeep wrangler, no top and no front doors seen leaving the area when the fire started. >> all mandatory evacuations at the rag fire burning near the lake have been lifted. the fire which began wednesday has burned 6,900 acres and is 55% contained. abc 7 news reporter sergio cantano at a townhall meeting where residents had a lot of questions for fire officials. >> reporter: through the week the rag fire near the lake raged consuming hundreds of acres in just the first day. but now crews have a better handle on this fire. >> the good news of the week is that there have been no injuries to citizens. structure loss was minimal. all residences are still standing. >> the fire chief told us crews are cutting a containment line along the southern edge of the fire. all roads were reopened at 10:00 a.m. residents allowed to return home. >> fire trucks are on the ground. patrolling for hot spots. now with all evacuations cleared, a lot of the residents are going over lessons learned from this fire. >> fire team leaders held an afternoon briefing with the community and fielded a number of questions including consaernzcerns about drinking water and concerns about communication. when we vac wagss s evacuations were called not everyone got the 911 call that system doesn't recognize cell phone numbers. one community had a solution. >> set up our on robo call system. private one. put some body and inexpensive. >> evacuating live stock. lessons learned from last year's fire got animals moved fast. >> must have seen 50 trailers in a two, three hour time span. it was amazing how -- everybody got together. and i know that there were people moving cattle too. >> fire team con concerned. create maintain defensible spaces around homes. in tonight to a fall in police officer in san leandro. part of the street is now known as dan neemy way. abc 7 news at the street renaming today on the tenth anniversary of the officer's death. dozens of his colleagues celebrated his life and honored him at a special ceremony. the chief shared what the officer wrote about being an officer >> we can't save the world. in fact i doubt the word even wants to be saved. if, however once in a while we can make someone a little safer leave someone just a little better off than we found them, doesn't that count for something? >> he left behind a wife and two children. the man who shot him is on death row. >> heyward police sergeant scott lunger laid to rest wednesday. shot and killed in a traffic stop wednesday. because so many are expected to attend area. the search is on for a killer after chp officers in san leandro found a man dead. investigating an accident on 880 this morning when they heard gunfire nearby near marina boulevard offramp. officers found the sound. found the victim. police believe it was an isolated incident. in less than an hour, some streets in san francisco will be closing down in preparation for the 38th annual san francisco marathon. the race begins and ends at the embarcadero and mission street after winding through the city. abc 7 news was in san francisco as crews began preparations for the race. street video of black smoke billowing into the air. fire crews evacuated the hotel and shut down streets around the hotel for several hours. abc news reporter alex perez has the latest. >> a towering inferno lot of guests who perhaps this is their first time visiting the national forest. this provide a guided opportunity to interact in a natural setting. that folks might otherwise feel intimidating or beyond their skill set. >> it also creates year-round income for heavenly and year round work for employees. >> we have 135 folks on staff. jobs did not exist two years ago. >> on the hill. crews are building an alpine coaster similar to this one running at a colorado resort. they're also working on something called a canopy tour. >> going to have platforms built up around the trees. and you are going to zip tree to tree. >> the project took years of planning. the main objections came from the sierra club worried about more traffic and environmental damage. but the forest service believes there are now enough protections in place and the park is going full speed ahead. heavenly spending millions on summer improvements. other ski resorts on public land are watching to see if the
