and hero's welcome. the superstar surfer returns home overnight after that shark scare. now a worldwide phenomenon. he opens up about that close encounter to friends and family joking about why he was targeted. >> i had fish the night before. maybe that's why. >> as the internet goes into overdrive with its new hero. i'm glad he can joke about a shark attack right now. but we're all going to have to get into the water to escape this heat. >> i'm telling you. we'll begin with the sizzling heat. millions of americans in ten states from texas to virginia under heat warnings and advisories. it was the hottest day of the year in major cities across the northeast. and temperatures could top 90 degrees again. ginger, where else would she be but outside in the heat for us this morning. good morning, ginger. >> oh, good morning to you, robin. this is supposed to be the hottest time of year, and, boy, is it turning out to be. already in the low 80s this morning. that's one of the issues. the temperatures are not dropping. the other issue, a lot of moisture in the air. that's what makes it dangerous. look at some of the heat indices this morning. it feels already like 90 in washington, d.c. that's closer to their average high for this time of the year. you have the heat and humidity and that's when you start to get into the danger zone. >> this is worse than brutal. it's treacherous. >> reporter: oppressive, blistering heat. >> it's awful and it's very, very, very hot. >> reporter: overnight, parts of new york city without power. in staten island, portable light towers brought in illuminating officers directing traffic. no power forcing this hospital to run on backup generators. >> brutal. >> reporter: power lines igniting from the overload. new york city, now in the midst of what will likely be the first official heat wave we've had since 2013. nearly a dozen firefighters treated for heat-related ailments. some rushed to the hospital. >> check on your neighbors. particularly our senior citizens. >> reporter: in philadelphia, city buses free for seniors to ride, keeping them out of that heat and cooled off. in louisiana, and in texas, roads buckling. heat indices above 105. >> flames rolling out. >> reporter: in new hampshire take a look at this. nascar driver alex bowman's right front tire literally burning rubber as temperatures soared to 126 degrees on the track. the other problem is the heat is cumulative. that's why we have advisories in effect from texas all the way to southern virginia, southeast virginia really. excessive heat warning for florence, south carolina up to wilmington, north carolina. the numbers are going to soar above 106. jackson, mississippi, what it will feel like. good news, everybody. if you are north of philadelphia, you're going to see some fresher, much less humid and cooler air going into the end of this week. so things are going to improve, george. >> okay, ginger, thanks very much. to the race for president now. your voice, your vote and our brand-new abc news/"washington post" poll. big news for donald trump jumping out to the widest lead yet on the republican side. nearly double the support of his closest rival. let's get more on this from jon karl. and jon, a pretty stunning surge there. but it does come with an asterisk. >> reporter: stunning surge with a big caveat. first the surge, look at the numbers, trump weighs in with 24% support among republicans. that is twice as much as jeb bush. and it is the biggest lead we have seen by any republican so far in this race, by far. but here's the caveat. most of this poll was conducted before his controversial comments on john mccain. among those surveyed after those comments, his support went down conspicuously. and take a look at this morning's "daily news," "the new york daily news." trump is once again getting hammer over those comments. "the daily news" pointing out trump received five deferments avoiding the draft in vietnam while mccain was spending his time as a p.o.w. >> yeah lots of questions about his draft record right there. now, most top republican strategists think he won't get the nomination. but they're worried he's a spoiler. >> reporter: look at the polls. jeb bush versus hillary clinton, you have a very close race. but if trump jumps in as an independent, suddenly hillary clinton wins in a landslide, almost all of trump's support coming from republicans. >> and, jon, i'll be heading to ohio today to interview the ohio governor, john kasich. he'll become the 16th candidate right now. not really registering in the polls, but his profile gives him a lot of potential. >> reporter: so hard to break through but, look, he is the governor of ohio, he has won election twice in ohio and as you know there probably is no battleground state more significant than ohio. so if anybody has a chance to break through at this late game it may be john kasich. >> that will be on "world news tonight." and "good morning america" tomorrow. >> i'll now you'll scoot out early for that. the latest on sandra bland, the woman found dead in a texas jail cell three days after being arrested during a traffic stop. police have released new video from outside her cell around the time she died. as her family awaits the results of that private autopsy. abc's ryan smith has been tracking the case for us. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning. authorities say they believe sandra bland's death was a tragic accident and not one of criminal intent. but they're also adding they're viewing it like a murder investigation and now releasing video from inside the jail where she was held during the last moments of her life. this morning, authorities say this newly released jailhouse video shows the moments police officers realized sandra bland was dead. hanging in her cell, a garbage bag around her neck. the three-hour surveillance tape shows little activity in the hallway leading to bland's cell. but watch as this officer goes to check on her, looks through a window and runs back to the main jail area to summon help. >> this is being treated like a murder investigation. >> reporter: the texas rangers now investigating how she died after being arrested in this routine traffic stop. >> you just slammed my head into the ground. do you not even care about that? >> reporter: police placed her in this area of jail cells. you can't see her, but they claim her health was intact. >> there were no reported injuries by miss bland. no additional medical treatment was requested. >> reporter: less than three hours before her death, authorities say jailers conducted their rounds. >> a jailer personally spoke with miss bland. miss bland reported to this jailer, i'm fine. >> reporter: later she asked about making agent phone call, one never made. it would be their last conversation with her. an hour later, a guard comes to sandra's cell. >> the jailer looked through the window and observed miss bland hanging from the privacy partition in her cell. >> reporter: but this video still leaving her family with more questions than answers. >> it wasn't much of anything there so, of course, that's still was lingering questions. i will tell you that what i think it shows is that it's clear that something is wrong. >> reporter: while a coroner listed sandra's cause of death as suicide, authorities say they're not so sure. >> it is too early to make any kind of determination that this was a suicide or a murder. >> reporter: police say they expect to release dash cam video of the arrest today. and they're downloading data from sandra's phone indicating she was recording the incident. and as for her family, they're hoping private autopsy results expected today will help solve the mystery of her death. >> thanks very much. let's talk to dan abrams about this right now. the police treating this like a murder investigation. but no evidence that anyone went in the cell. >> that's right so you have the sheriff and the coroner deeming this to be a suicide. but in essence, what the district attorney is saying, yeah, i know that's their position. but i'm still going to do an independent investigation here to determine could there be something else? meaning, you could still look, for example, at the plastic bag. where there fingerprints? were there dna? these are important questions that need to be answered. and by the d.a. coming out and saying, i'll look at it as if it were a murder investigation, he's saying this isn't over. and i'm pretty sure he's going to end up handing this to a grand jury to ultimately make that decision. >> that's why the autopsy is so important, but also the release of this dash cam video. >> right, so the dash cam video is from when she's arrested. we're expecting that to be released today. a somewhat separate issue as to why was she arrested. did the police behave properly when she was arrested? that will be more important in any civil lawsuit that she may file against the police department than necessarily in the murder investigation. >> why she spent three days in jail as well. >> that's right. >> all right, dan abrams. thank you very much. now to new developments overnight in the investigation into that deadly shooting in chattanooga. we're learning new details this morning about the killer. and his ties to an influential al qaeda cleric. abc's brian ross is here with the latest. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. for the first time officials this morning say they have found the links they thought they would find between the chattanooga shooter and islamic terrorists. it turns out that mohammad abdulazeez was an online follower of the radical preacher and al qaeda recruiter anwar al awlaki. and fbi technicians discovered the links in an extensive search of his smartphone and online activity. and family representative confirms to abc news today that in the days before the weekly shooting last week the deadly shooting last week abdulazeez went online searching for religious justification for attacking the two u.s. military sites. apparently hoping that by carrying out his suicide mission, allah would forgive his earthly sins, including drug abuse and a long list of personal failures. what his family sees as more evidence of his mental illness and what the fbi sees as a clear link to radical islam. >> disturbing. all the way around. >> yes. >> thank you, brian. something else disturbing. new drone video. take a look at this. it shows the drone actually firing a gun. it's going viral on youtube and now the faa is investigating. david kerley is has the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: morning, george. we've seen drones doing some outrageous things. but this one has the faa's attention. someone mounting a handgun on a drone and firing it. this drone violated the no-fly zone around the white house flying over the fence. jetliner pilots on final approach avoiding the small craft. >> kennedy tower, we just saw a little drone below us. >> reporter: but this morning, it's this drone that has caught the eye of the feds. called the flying gun on youtube, a semi-automatic handgun fired several times from the drone. >> there are countless ways the drones can be useful. using one as a remote controlled weapon is not one of them and i question the judgment of anyone who would attempt to do so. >> reporter: this drone, the creation of an 18-year-old mechanical engineering college student in connecticut, who the faa is now investigating for violating aviation rules and possibly criminal laws, as well. the college student claims building this drone is part of his studies. problem is he may have violated two federal bans. releasing anything from an aircraft. and arming a civilian aircraft. robin, he may be getting a visit from the feds. >> i'm sure he will. david, thank you. now to incredible new information about that daring prison break in upstate new york. convict david sweat speaking out from behind bars, revealing elaborate details about how he and richard matt broke out last month and the work that went into it. abc's linzie janis with that story. >> reporter: this morning, stunning new details about how david sweat and richard matt pulled off a prison break worthy of a hollywood blockbuster. investigators telling abc news sweat revealing to them he spent night after night for nearly six months roaming around inside the walls of the prison, scouting out an escape route. the convicted killer boasting that he did the majority of the work, crawling out of a hole he cut in his cell around 11:30 each night, making sure he was back by the 5:30 a.m. count. >> they had access to seeing what the inner, you know, portions of that part of the facility looked like. >> reporter: sweat shimmying down a pipe four floors into those tunnels, busting a hole through a brick wall with a sledge hammer. spotting that giant hot steam pipe that led to the outside world. according to police, sweat waiting until the spring when the heating system was shut off, then spending weeks cutting it with only a hacksaw. sweat and matt finally making it to freedom june 6th, an escape many compare to the one in "shawshank redemption." including sweat and matt themselves, according to "the new york times," sweat telling investigators he first looked to escape through a sewer pipe like the one used in the film before reaching a dead end. according to the paper sweat also telling police that he and matt joked that while it took the film's character andy dufresne 20 years to escape, it would only take them territory. jet is part costco, part amazon and the goal, according to its founder, is to undercut everyone on price. this morning, there's a new option for online shoppers. jet.com, which launched at midnight, is hoping to rival retail giants amazon and walmart adds the cheapest web retailer. the company describing itself as an online price club saving members 10% to 15% on more than 10 million products. shoppers on jet.com will pay a $50 yearly membership fee for access to those low prices. >> we only profit from the membership. once we know what products the consumer wants to buy, we can figure out what's the cheapest most efficient way to get that basket to the consumer. >> reporter: the low-cost promise seems to be true. jet.com charging $7.49 for this women's schick quattro they sell on amazon for $8.20. and this dell laptop is selling for over $40 less on jet.com than walmart and more than there are 200 less than am don. but this hamilton beach slow cooker is $8 cheaper on wall yart -- walmart and amazon. jet's prices were 27% lower on average and performed especially well in the house hold category, where prices were a surprising 39% more affordable. >> the real hard collapse in los angeles. >> that's right. we're hearing for the first time from the driver who was left dangling in his truck for hours after the highway bridge collapsed in flooding rains in california. in an off-camera interview from the hospital, brian caster says he found god. he says he was sure he was going to die. and there were no warning signs before that bridge gave way. the bridge passed a safety inspection just last year. and caster says he started praying when chunks of concrete fell on his head. fortunately his friend escaped and called for help. he is recovering from broken ribs and a shattered knee. a developing story overseas. british authorities have arrest arrested a man they say was planning to attack u.s. military personnel in england. the suspect and his unging are in court today. and concerning numbers about american children living in poferty. 2% of children were living below the poverty line in 2013. that's up 80% from the recession. poverty rates up among african-americans and native americans. new details now about what caused the explosion of that private rocket carrying cargo to the space station last month. engineers now blaming a two-foot steel strut that snapped under pressure. 4,000 pounds of cargo was lost costing taxpayers $110 million. well, after becoming the first female head coach in the nba summer league, becky hammon just and nowhere closer. this is the marina where dr. jeffrey whiteside, a prominent critical care and pulmonary physician vanished. police say he was last seen walking away from the yacht harbor after arguing with his wife. >> it's just so out of character for him. >> reporter: this morning, police scaling back the search saying despite three weeks of searching not a single clue has turned up. >> our job is always to bring people home. >> we really just try to focus on doing our jobs as best we can. >> reporter: dr. whiteside and his wife vacationing in the upscale door county on lake michigan where they own a condo and a boat. he vanished on june 29th. his wife returning to their home two hours away in wisconsin reporting him missing two days later. >> as each day goes by we become more and more concerned a good outcome is becoming less likely. >> reporter: authorities using sonar-equipped boats, a plane, and canine units to scour the area. steadily expanding their search. 18 of dr. whiteside's colleagues and friends also joining the search scouring the area including part of a state park. for now police say they aren't ruling anything out including foul play. and what makes this even stranger, no suicide note, no one yet to be arrested and police will not say what dr. whiteside and his wife were arguing about. robin? >> all right, tom, thank you. now to that dramatic hot car rescue. a kansas woman caught on camera saving a toddler left alone in a car in a shopping center parking lot in sweltering heat. she used a tire iron to break the window. abc's gio benitez has that story. good morning, gio. >> reporter: it's incredible. the woman says it felt like she was never going to get that window open. and this morning, she is speaking out about that harrowing rescue. what you're looking at is a kansas city woman's desperate attempt to save a child. sarah oropeza trying to smash the window with a tire iron. a 2-year-old little girl inside the shouldering hot car, accidentally left behind by her care givers. >> she was just covered in sweat like her ponytail was dripping sweat off it. >> reporter: in reality the ordeal lasting three minutes. in her mind time stood still. >> i was thinking when i was hitting the window what if she dies? what if i can't get her out? what's going to happen? what are we going to do? and i -- i just did what i thought was right. just hit the window till it broke. >> reporter: police ticketing her caregivers when they came out of the store. criminal charges may be on the way. >> i don't care if it was a minute or two minutes or 15 minutes, that's too long to leave a small child in a car. >> reporter: on monday police in pennsylvania smashing this window after a mother called 911 to report that two children were accidentally locked inside. so far this year, ten children have died because they were left behind in hot cars. one child dying just last friday in texas. >> 98.3. >> reporter: just two weeks ago i saw how quickly a hot car can affect an adult body. i mean we're just dripping sweat everywhere. in just 30 minutes i went from a healthy body temp of 98.3 degrees to a scorching 105. >> 105. >> reporter: wow. in a child, that can happen in less than ten minutes. >> i want people to see that it's okay to step in and help. you should step in and help. >> reporter: and while police are still investigating this case, child safety groups insist any parent can accidentally leave their child behind. the biggest tip -- try to create memory triggers like leaving your purse or even cell phone in the backseat, things you would have grabbed before the child was even born. >> i remember you also told us if you put a stuffed animal in the front seat. >> yes. >> that can remind you, hey, you have >> reporter: will ferrell, vince vaughn and others making the world safe for the dad bod, the six-pack exchanged for a quarter keg. now a new study says the dad bod is no joke. fatherhood can make you fat. and those love handles can be lethal. >> they may skip their exercise skip their ability to go out and take care of themselves a little bit. >> reporter: jamie is trying to lose the pregnancy weight even though he's never been pregnant. the former high school and college tennis player and friend of a "gma" producer, he started packing on the pounds about two yearsing a right about the time little jackson was born. >> the poor guy, he really did join me in my own weight gain as i was pregnant with jackson. there was some collaborative eating. >> there were a lot of changes in my eating habits. if there were leftovers or things he would not finish eating, rather than waste or anything else, we would do a little snacking ourselves. >> reporter: less time and energy for exercise, too. >> we were both working full time. by the time we would put jackson down at night, we were just exhausted. >> reporter: total weight gain for jamie easily eight to ten pounds. turns out he's in good company. the new northwestern university study followed more than 10,000 men over a 20-year period and found a typical six foot man gains nearly 4.5 pounds after becoming a dad. nondads actually lose about 1.5 pounds over the same time period. >> what we found is that fathers increase their weight after they transition into fatherhood compared to men who didn't become fathers. >> reporter: so the message here don't succumb to the dad bod. >> the unintentional weight gain corresponds to mindless eating, making poor food choices. parents need to think about their health the same way that they think about their kids' health. >> reporter: the researchers did not appear to control for the fact that men without kids were also far more likely to be unmarried, so fatherhood may not be the only reason for those extra pounds. but still, be cautious about the dad bod. >> but you also lose those extra hours to hit the gym because you're being a good dad. >> and you're tireder, that's true. thank you very much, david. you're going to want to hear this, everybody, because next up on the "heat index," we are counting down to "the bachelorette." the big finale coming up in less than a week, and that will be when we find out who kaitlyn chooses. last night, though she came face to face with every one of the men she said good-bye to in "the men tell all." things got a little wild. a little emotional. abbie boudreau was there for us for all the highlights. >> reporter: she's the most talked about bachelorette and kaitlyn's controversial journey is coming to a close. >> i'm in love with two guys and two guys are in love with me. >> reporter: but not before facing the suitors she rejected during "the men tell all." there were awkward apologies. >> are you proposing right now? >> no. >> reporter: but by far the most polarizing issue of the season, kaitlyn's conduct with nick. >> when it's thousands and thousands of comments after comments just pouring in of people hating -- like i get death threats. >> reporter: host chris harrison reading some of those hateful and at times explicit messages directed at kaitlyn out loud. >> i'm going to read these as they were received by kaitlyn.
