and on this friday morning, we do begin with the latest on what appears to be an act of homegrown terror, the deadly attack on american service members in chattanooga, tennessee. >> four marines killed and three people wounded when a gunman opened fire at two military centers and the suspect is also dead. >> prayer vigils held across the area last night. strangers coming together in this thing. security being stepped up across the country at military recruiting sites like this one in manhattan. we are covering all angles for you this morning. our bazi kanani with the warning from the pentagon. but we want to start with abc's stephanie ramos who has the latest from chattanooga. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. a deadly rampage here in chattanooga, tennessee, the targets, a naval reserve center and this armed forces recruiting center. the suspected gunman shot dead. authorities, though, still trying to figure out if that suspect had any ties to isis or any other terror groups. ♪ prayer vigils held across chattanooga as a community and investigators try to figure out what made this man go on a deadly shooting spree. >> chattanooga is a great city with a broken heart tonight. >> reporter: the terror started at 10:45 thursday morning. dozens of shots echoed throughout the city. >> he just pulled up and next thing you know, he lifted up his arms like this with a big black gun and just -- it was one shot, and then it was just endless shots. >> reporter: witnesses say the suspected gunman identified as 24-year-old mohammod youssuf abdulazeez armed with numerous weapons fired at the glass doors of this armed forces recruitment center in a strip mall injuring one marine. in this rented silver convertible, the gunman raced seven miles down the street where he opened fire again this time at a naval reserve center. officials say he rammed into a security gate, entered the building and then shot and killed four marines. >> all units respond. all units respond. we're treating this as a mass casualty incident. >> reporter: then a gun battle with police. one officer injured. >> we are conducting this as an act of domestic terrorism. >> reporter: the suspect was born in kuwait but was a u.s. citizen who recently graduated from the university of tennessee. >> we still have three active crime scenes that we are investigating. it's going to be a long night for our folks. >> reporter: and this is just the beginning of the investigation. the fbi expects to be here for several more days. >> abc's stephanie ramos live for us in chattanooga. we're learning more. co-workers said he called sick several days this week and worked at this wire and table factory for three months. the fbi now there talking to a man who commuted to work with the suspect. >> the shooting spree comes just weeks after warnings from counterterrorism officials led to heightened security during the fourth of july holiday. well, investigators are now trying to figure out if this gunman was answering a call from isis to launch attacks on u.s. soil. with more, we have abc's bazi kanani in washington. bazi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, reena. good morning, t.j. as recently as last weekend, isis was posting online more calls for attacks against the u.s. military. now counterterrorism officials say the gunman in chattanooga was not on their radar. no known connections to terrorists, and they're now trying to figure out his motive. the troubling question this morning, what could have led a seemingly successful young man to attack the u.s. military. mohammad youssuf abdulazeez was a college graduate, electrical engineer and athlete seen here in a mixed martial arts competition. his former high school coach is stunned. >> he seemed kind of serious, but the more that i had him in class, he turned out to be just a cut-up. i mean, he was a joker all the time. >> reporter: officials say abdulazeez has no known connection to terrorist organizations, but investigators are still looking into the possibility he was inspired by their internet propaganda. in the last year isis has been urging its followers in the u.s. to attack police and military installations. the group posting photos and addresses of soldiers saying, "what are you waiting for? kill them in their own land." this year alone, the fbi says it has made arrests in at least five plots aimed at domestic military facilities. >> what we are increasingly seeing are individuals who may be motivated by the ideology of a terrorist group, maybe inspired by their social media campaigns but are acting independent of those terrorist organizations. >> reporter: this morning investigators want to know if the lone gunman in chattanooga was the feared lone wolf terrorist much harder to track and stop. the pentagon is now warning military installations across the country to be vigilant. there are some 5,000 military recruiting centers across the country in shopping malls and commercial locations. they are the so-called soft targets with lesser security than officials have been concerned would be targeted by terrorists. reena, t.j. >> all right. bazi morning america." breaking overnight, extreme weather plowed through parts of the midwest. the storm chaser captured a powerful tornado on camera looming over an area southwest of chicago. gas and electricity were cut off as a precaution. dozens of homes have been damaged, but the full extent can't be assessed till daybreak. then this touched down in missouri and destroyed buildings at a seed business. nobody injured there. employees spent the rest of the day trying to salvage what they could before the next storm hit. the colorado theater shooter could be getting the death penalty now that he's been convicted of 12 people. it took jurors less than 13 hours to return the verdict. they apparently did not buy the defense argument that james holmes was insane at the time of the shooting. outside the courtroom tom teves, who lost his son, held up a shirt showing the 12 victims. >> they're dirt bags who kill real people. okay, these are real people and real families, and there are 70 or 80 people that are really injured, and they'll be injured for life when you guys all run to the next thing. >> the same jury will begin hearing evidence in the punishment phase beginning wednesday. that could take a month. there were solemn ceremonies in australia today to remember the victims of malaysia airlines flight 17, which crashed a year ago. 38 australians were among the 298 people who died after the plane was shot down under circumstances that still are not clear. ukraine has blamed russian-backed rebels while moscow blames ukraine for the attack. president obama is more determined than ever, he says, to bring about changes to the justice system. the president visited with inmates at a federal prison in oklahoma telling them he made mistakes as a young man and that without strong family support, he could have ended up where they are. he says the justice system must distinguish between violent criminals and young people doing, quote, stupid things. well, former president george h.w. bush is spending another night in the hospital recovering from a broken bone in his neck. his son jeb says mr. bush apparently fell while being lifted from his wheelchair. doctors say the 91-year-old faces months of physical therapy and limited mobility, but the good news is he won't need surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. we wish him the very best there. coming up here, the hollywood heavyweights get into a food fight with costco. also, google's self-driving car getting into an accident. but whose fault was it? and the massive explosion blowing up this is not good. >> we're getting new images now of the mess left by that tornado we told you about earlier. it hammered an area 200 miles southwest of chicago. the damage extensive. thousands without power and temporary shelters have been set up. emergency teams are still going door to door. no injuries to report so far. lots of wet roads into the great lakes and flooding into texas and new mexico. flying airport delays possible in detroit, phoenix and las vegas. the search for a motive for that deadly attack in tennessee. >> four marines killed and three wounded at two military centers. the gunman identified as 24-year-old mohammod youssuf abdulazeez an american born citizen in kuwait. the fbi is treating it as an act of domestic terrorism and trying to determine if he was influenced by isis. live coverage on "good morning america." well breaking overnight two in critical condition after a house exploded in st. louis. one was reduced to rubble and the other one on either side were damaged by the fire. a witness said she was about a block away when she heard an explosion and somebody yelling get me out of the basement. investigators were going through the rubble. a texas grand jury will be looking into the death of a woman found hanging in her jail cell. sandra bland is her name. she was arrested near houston last friday after what started as a routine traffic stop. she was caught on camera here. things escalated between her and the police. just three days later she was found dead in the cell. the coroner ruled it a suicide. her heartbroken loved ones say they can't believe she would have taken her own life. >> it's unimaginable and difficult for us to wrap our minds around based on the sandy i knew. that's unfathomable to me. >> her friends are planning a rally outside the jail where she died. fbi joining the texas rangers to investigate the traffic stop and how she died. the 16-year-old who managed to survive a plane crash that killed her grandparents is talking about the ordeal. autumn veatch said they couldn't see a thing. she tried in vain to save them from the wreckage and forced to walk for two days. at first she thought she was die then positive she would live. veatch described cha whept her going. >> i couldn't die without saying good-bye to people. i couldn't die without feeling certain feelings again. >> veatch says once she finally made it to a busy freeway it took more than an hour for someone to finally stop and help her. despite it all she's never wanted to live more. two computer hackers being rewarded by united airlines. the carrier has given them 1 million frequent flier miles apiece for finding security holes in its computer system. those million miles are enough for several first class trips to
