Abby, carli, christine and the entire team, theyre the best of the best and before they make history one more time this morning, theyre joining us live on gma right now. And good morning america, you are looking live at the statehouse in Columbia South carolina where the Confederate Flag is come down. Welcome to our viewers he in the west. I want to pause for a moment to the rest of the country can enjoy a special report. Announcer this is an abc news special report. Now reporting, george stephanopoulos. And we are coming on the air right now for a moment of history. We are going to look live right now at the statehouse in Columbia South carolina where the Confederate Flag flying for more than 50 years at that statehouse is about to come down an honor guard will approach the flag poll, bring down the flag for the last time and be moved to a Military Museum near the capitol there in Columbia South carolina this all began at the Emanuel Ame Church in South Carolina where nine operationers including the reverend reverend were gunned down by a white supremacist. Dylann roof. It set off events. The family members appeared in court to forgive the man who murdered their loved ones. Since then we had debates across the country. All across the south. Confederate flags coming down. Culminating after 50 years of debate in the statehouse to bring it down. On the grounds right now the crowd is developing and they are chanting bring it down. It has been such an emotional debate in South Carolina and the country. Right now the family members of the nine victims are being brought out. They will be joined by the thousands. By the governor and former South Carolina governors and the pastor norvell goss. Steve osunsami is there. Steve . Reporter george there are thousands upon thousands of people here. It is swelteringly hot. I can tell you the plan here is to make this ceremony very brief, quick, respectful ceremony. Were being told. People are cheering now as more state officials step out. The family members that you just made reference to are about a couple hundred feet in front of me on the steps here. They set them apart from the ceremony. And they are all this sort of standing there, in that area right by the color guard. I can tell you that a lot of people here have high emotions about this. Many people who wanted to see this bit of history. There are people in the rafters in this building directly behind me watching i dont know if you can see them up there is of course one little factual point that must be said in all of this that many of the fragments detractors underline, that is this flag was put here in 1961 as the governments response to courtordered desegregation. George . They never said it would come down. You are watching the governor she signed the bill to bring it down with nine separate pen, one for each of the victims of that shooting in charleston. President obama, of course also weigh egg in with that remarkable eulogy in charleston a couple weeks ago where he sang amazing grace. And, steve, so many have remarked how this debate even though it had been going on to so long in South Carolina really did seem to bring so much of the state together. Reporter it did. It was something that we saw that was quite unique here. We saw, not only in this state, but people came in from across the country to that ame church to bring flowers, to remember the victims, to pay their respects. There was a feeling here that it was important for americans much all color, to show that this behavior that this act of hate as police have described it, was unacceptable. Of course, the accused gunman accused in this case in the murders is seen in what we believed from Police Online and in pictures the Confederate Flag in one hand and a gun in the other. So many people wanted to do something to counter that image, the image of hate that so many people p associated with this flag that police said led to these murders at a bible study at a black church. You saw in the debate on wednesday and thursday decendents of jefferson davis. Saying now is the time, steve. Now is the time for this flag to come down. She was quite emotional. Looks like now, george the color guard is starting to march out. Its been a long debate. They debated for hours and hours in the middle of the night. Here comes the color guard right now from the South Carolina highway patrol. They reached the flag they will lower and fold it and it will be given to the kerrater of the confederate relic room in the Military Museum. The crowd includes the governor and former governors, and members of the legislature, other political leaders in South Carolina. Steve said in a solemn ceremony a lot of joy in that crowd today. Reporter there is, but also there are a lot of people here mourning the loss of this flag. There are a number of People Holding Confederate Flags in the crowd. Some of them even africanamerican. There is a van driving around the state grounds with two large con fed receipt flags. It has been driving around this area nonstop. So many people also very upset, very frustrated by what is happening here today. The honor guard of the South Carolina state police. You hear the reaction as that flag comes down. Are for the last time. Looking live at the state grounds of the statehouse in of Columbia South carolina where the Confederate Flag has just come down. It now being folded by thes hopper guard of the state police. Now are they chanting usa . Reporter ed kraut is chanting usa. We see people waving the american flag. Im looking at the families now, the family sies wiping tears from their eyes no doubt moved the this. Its a deaths of the nine people at bible study that lead to years, and years, of debate. Keeping in mind, there are many other people p very frustrated, very upset who feel their heritage is being stepped on. Those families touched so many people in South Carolina and across the country. The flag now down and folded. The flag pole will come down as well as the flag is moved to the Military Museum in columbia. As the honor guard marches off, lets take one more look at that moment when the flag the Confederate Flag was lowered from statehouse grounds in Columbia South carolina. That is it for the flag no doubt those emotions will linger in South Carolina, so much of the country for some time. And as the honor guard marches off to hand that flag to the kerrater of the North Carolina museum we want to return now to our regular programming, for so much of the country, that is good morning america. A announcer this has been a special report from abc news. Youve been watching those moments at the Columbia South carolina statehouse where the flags has come down. I want to go to Steve Osunsami who was there on the scene as it happened. Steve are you there . Reporter the honor guard removing the Confederate Flag. You can hear people cheering now as they walk away with it. They handed it to the curator of the relic museum who will now keep this flag for safekeeping. Steve, talk a little more about the scene there this morning. We see that huge crowd. Somewhat of a varied it crowd . Reporter i didnt hear your last question. I can tell you, there are thousands upon thousands of people here on both sides of the issues i would say that the people wanting to bring down the flag outnumber those who support it but there are people carrying Confederate Flags in this crowd, and many of those people feel that their heritage is being stepped on. Steve, i know youve been covering this debate for a long time as i have as well. It seemed to come up every four years during president ial campaigns, but no matter what happened up until this shooting in charleston the flag persisted. Reporter i heard half of that i think you mentioned the shooting in charleston. It had a great deal to do what happened here. It was the wind beneath the wings of lawmakers who were pushing for this. One of the most emotional interviews that i did over the past few days was with a lawmaker who was the decentant of the p confederate general who said this had to happen. This morning, the ended if a decades long flight over the confederate battle fight. The flag coming down the flag pole removed. Outside in 100 degree heat. Some coming to celebrate, hers to mourn. Im not racist prejudice. Its a heritage thing. Reporter South Carolinas governor is celebrating, signing an order to take down the flag after the shooting in what police call are hate crime. These nine pens go to each of the nine familyies. Reporter the state senator saying this wouldnt have happened without that loss. Sometimes it takes a horrific depiction for us to really grasp the gravity of the situation. Reporter state officials report that lawmakerses getting death threats. Jenny horn the if descendent of jefferson davis. Confederate president. She pushed to take down the flag. I have a great deal of respect for my ancestor honor, my parents. My legacy is what i do while imim here. Now. Here and now. Reporter the white house pushing to remove any emblem that has the battle flag. The state can now bid for College Tournament games and championships, a decadelong boycott against the state is lifting. That is the scene in South Carolina president obama just put out a tweet. He said South Carolina taking down a Confederate Flag a signal of goodwill and healing and a meaningful step towards a better future. We want to move on to a celebration in new york.
