live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> did you shoot last wednesday? >> yes. >> the jail house confession of an accused killer. only on abc7 news francisco sanchez admits to the murder of a san francisco woman. tonight officers reexamine the crime scene after what sanchez told us about the gun. good evening. 56-year-old sanchez spoke only to abc7 news today in a 45-minute jail house interview. he called 32-year-old kate's killing an accident. sergio is live in the newsroom with sanchez's confession. sergio? >> francisco sanchez says he doesn't remember everything about what happened on pier14 because he was under the influence of what he believes were sleeping pills he found nearby. francisco sanchez says he is the one responsible in the tragic shooting of kate steinley. >> did you shoot kate steinley, the lady on pier 14? >> yes. >> you did shoot her? >> yes. >> he said it was an accident. he told my colleague, cornell bernard, he was on pier 14 and found the gun under one of the benches. >> she over there something like that. >> you found the gun on the ground? >> yes. >> it wasp wrad in a -- it was wrapped in a t-shirt? >> yes. >> i picked it up and boom, boom, three times. >> minutes after that interview aired investigators with the san francisco police department taped off the pier and began reexamining the scene. we watched as two officers crouched near a group of benches. they used a laser to take measurements while another officer held a white sheet of paper against the back of a female investigator. steinley was shot in the back. then they reopened the pier. >> can you comment on what you are doing? >> investigating. >> sanchez said after the gun went off he lit a cigarette and walked away. >> did you throw gun in the water? >> yes. >> but he said he didn't know he shot someone until he was arrested later that evening. according to police sources he told investigators where he dropped the gun and divers found it near pier. sanchez has felonies and has been deported to mexico five times and was last in immigration custody in march. >> why did you keep coming back to the u.s.? why did you come back to san francisco? >> because i'm looking for [inaudible] roofing, lot keeping. >> now that he is in jail again sanchez says he is sorry for what harpened. >> [speaking spanish]. >> he says he he wants the harshest punishment possible and he wants to tell kate's parents in court that he does president want to go on after what he -- he doesn't want to go on after what he did. >> he was turned over because of an outstanding warrant. he was released after the district attorney's office dropped charges in a 1997 case against him. the sheriff's office tells us even though there was a detainer by ins because of department policy and a sanctuary city ordinance they will not hold an undocumented immigrant for ice agents unless they have an order from a federal judge. in the newsroom, abc7 news. >> thank you. kate's dad and brother talked with abc news tonight. they have no comment on the jail house interview. they want only to focus on kate's life and legacy. >> he was with his daughter, kate on pier 14 the moment she was shot. >> we heard a pop and kate turned and said help me dad. i did all i could. here we are. >> he says he started cpr, a skill he learned in the military, and another man stepped in to help. neither knew what happened until they found the bullet wound in her back. that's not what this story is about. this story is about kate's life. >> the reason i feel we need to do these interviews is to let everybody know how amazing my sister was. she was a beautiful person inside and out. >> kate's brother brad who is expecting a baby girl says he lost his best friend. >> i hope there is a piece of kate's soul and when i look at my baby i can remember her. >> brad and jim say they will mess everything about kate. >> kind, thoughtful, spiritual deep caring loving. >> those qualities and kate's spirit helping them cope as they try to live by her example. >> we want the people in the world to know and the people in san francisco to know that kindness will win this battle details about a fatal police shooting in pleasanton. it happened around 2:00 this morning when the officer responded to a break in call at a classic car shop on first street. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley is there with video showing the moments before the shooting. leslie? >> it is quite a story, actually. a man wearing a can dan -- bandanna and carrying an acoustic guitar broke into this place overnight. the managers took me on a walk through tour of all of the damage that was done. it was just before the suspect was fatally shot by one of the officers confronting him. >> that jack right there, it is 50/50 power. he shook this through the wean dough. >> he walked me through the specialty sales classics' showroom. here is the hood of a 67 mustang scralled on with a sharpee and on a cadillac worth $150,000. >> he walked on the hood and cracking the paint here and you can't repaint this. there is a bunch of other damage he did. graffiti on the mirror in the bathroom. >> with the words "humanity has failed." >> he walked around with a guitar and broke it off right here. >> surveillance video is in the hands of pleasanton police. they say it documents the suspect moving around the showroom for 40 minutes and police entering with rifles. >> the male was very agitated and he was very aggressive toward the officers. the male ran back into the business and moments later was seen climbing through a broken window to the rear of the business. >> that's where the officer got into a physical fight with the man killing him. >> the break in occurred blocks away from the massive july 4th fireworks show at the alameda county fair. and they think there is a connection. >> i saw the part of the surveillance footage where from over here you can see pops of light and kind of sparks flying off an explosion which made me believe it was some sort of fire work. >> the suspect has not yet been identified and police have not said whether or not he was armed. in pleasanton leslie brinkley, abc7 news. police in san jose are investigating a shooting east of interstate 680. at least one person was shot on poko way. it happened around 8:00 tonight. officers releasing very little information about the shooting at this point but we are working to get more. a woman in san mateo has admitted to police she killed another woman. officers say 40-year-old brenda martinez went to the police department and reported the crime. they found the 66-year-old woman dead from head trauma in a home on north clairemont street. they believe she was hit in the head with a baseball bat. police say the two women were neighbors. new at 11:00, smoke rose from an apartment building there interstate 80 in hercules after a fire broke out before thine:00. the plane damaged four units before the firefighters brought the fire under control. nobody was hurt. the red cross is working to help the people who are displaced. investigators are looking for what caused the fire. could be a bit of moisture coming our way. let's head over to meteorologist drew touma with live doppler 7hd. >> katie it was a cooler finish to the holiday weekend thanks to a stronger sea breeze. looking at the cooling trend over the past 24 hours they saw double-digit drops. novato cooler and concord 11 degrees cooler and ukiah 12 degrees cooler topping out at 90 degrees. the same system that cooled us off today could bring us some showers this week. we will talk about the timing in a few minutes. >> thank you. in sonoma county divers spent another day searching lake sonoma for a missing teenage boy. he vanished in the water after being thrown from an inter tube that was being pulled by a jetski yesterday afternoon. another boy was with him and that boy was able to swim to shore. a helicopter and a dive team from marin county took part in today's search along with a boat that uses sonar. still to come on abc7 news at 11:00, the dangers of of mishandling fireworks. how friends are remembering a young man who died after a pyrotechnic mistake. more trouble for this serial stowaway after attempts to breech security at two busy airports. and later the practical joke that was no laughing matter. san francisco international airport. asiana airway crashed short of the runway at sfo after a flight from seoul, south korea. three people died and one was crushed by an airport fire truck at the crash scene. another 187 people were hurt. 290 people were on board the boeing 777. investigators blame pilot error for the crash. firefighters quickly contained a brushfire in hayward this afternoon. it started along west winton avenue south of the executive airport and near the shoreline of san francisco bay. crews attacked it from the ground and the air. the flames burned about 26 acres on land controlled by the alameda flood control district. they are looking into what caused the fire. it never threatened any structures. drinking and setting off fireworks turned deadly for a man in maine. devon staples died on the fourth of july when friends say he tried to launch a fire work off the top of his head. authorities say he died instantly. it happened at a backyard party where everyone was drinking. friends say they urged staples not to do it. >> happy. he is fun to be around. >> there is a reason why it goes boom. that's not just a benign piece of fun. it is deaning russ. it is dangerous. >> this is the state's first fireworks death since the new law took affect. a bay area homeless woman who sneaks past airport security and on to airplanes can't seem to stay out of trouble. one day after getting out of jail in chicago for sneaking past security at o'hare and midway airports police arrested marilyn hartman again. this time they say she had a valid ticket, but caused a disturbance. she has already been released. last august she snuck on to a plane from san jose to los angeles. it is time for another check of the forecast and we will send it over to drew with a post push to the east. what it will do is bring back the morning clouds on monday and tuesday and it will bring us a chance of spotty drizzle. as it moves over us midweek it will bring some light showers fireworks show in sacramento. the fireworks did light up the sky above cal expo for 13 minutes of the 23-minute show. a large mortar failed when it launched. that forced the rest of the show to be canceled due to safety concerns. >> it destroyed the rack. so it destroyed the footings on the racks and the racks turned sideways. the bullets -- the shells, the devices themselves were being launched sideways in assisted of going up in the air. >> nobody was hurt and the mishap never threatened the 25,000 spectators. the firefighters did quickly distinguish two small fires that were sparked by the miss firing mortar. soccer fans watched and celebrated as the usa women's team captured a world cup title. they enjoyed the match while displaying the prism. -- pay -- patriotism. we broadcast center. this is abc7 news. >> good evening. in tonight's headlines, san francisco police reexamine a murder scene on the embarcadero tonight after an exclusive jail house confession to abc7 news. francisco sanchez told us he tanned a gun wrap -- he found a gun wrapped in a t-shirt under a san francisco bench. he said he picked it up and it accidentally went off killing kate steinley. that's different than what he told police. he also told us he is sorry and wants the harshest punishment possible. a bandanna and carrying a classic guitar broke into a classic carhop and vandalized cars. arrived they say he fought with an officer and he fired the gun killing hill. killing him ?ie. in hercules -- in hercules four people are out of their homes. no one was hurt. a showdown in greece tonight as the country is on the brink of a collapse. today citizens rejected a bailout that may have had far reaching impacts. abc news reporter is in athens with more on what this means for europe and the u.s. >> tonight the polls are closed and the votes have been counted. a resounding victory for the greek government and its camp. a full throated rejection of an international bailout plan that reveals tougher austerity measures. millions of greek citizens turned out today to vote in a historic referendum on whether to accept or reject the terms. a simple yes or no vote. but the emergency injection. greece will run out in the coming days. abc news, athens. tomorrow lawmakers in sorell sorell -- south carolina will talk about taking down the flag from the state capitol. on the fourth of july a large crowd demanded it to be taken down and put into a museum. they believe it stands foraysism. foraysism. for racism. calls to take it down have grown after photos show a man charged in a deadly shooting at an african-american church posing with the flag. supporters say it is a a symbol of southern heritage and fallen civil war soldiers. a confederate statue at the university of north carolina chapel hill was vandalized. it was spray painted with murderer and black lives matter. the statue has been on campus since 1913 and it was put there as a memorial to the more than 300 students who died in the civil war. many have been fighting to remove it. pope francis is in ecuador on an eight-day visit to south america. he landed in windy conditions at the airport this afternoon. he is the first pope to set foot in ecuador since john paul ii in 1985. tomorrow he will attend a mass at the coastal shrine that is expected to draw $1 million. he plans to visit young. covering daly city, dublin, los gatos and all of the bay area, this is abc7 news. north coast government officials are asking cal trans put a stop to a plan to use poison on lands it is supposed to be protecting. it is the latest battle over a troubled prog -- project we have been investigating for two years. cal trans is building a bypass around the town. here is abc7 fuse anchor dan ashley with the story. >> the six-mile freeway bypass is now 70% finished and expected to open next year. but cal trans has struggled to meet its environmental requirements and now faces new controversy over plans to use herbicides to speed up the removal of nonnative blackberries. >> for mitigate expimg proving the wet land habitat what they are proposing is to poison it. >> the bypass runs right through protected wet lands and the streams. damage from construction is so extreme cal trans is required to do the largest environmental mitigation in history to compensate. that includes restoring sensitive habitat and creating new wet lands. a massive plan that may cost taxpayers as much as $100 million with little public input. >> the whole mitigation in planning was done behind closed doors. >> but the project's permits are public and herb sides and pesticides shall not be used on the mitigation parcells unless certain conditions are met. >> there is no question the use of herb sides can prevent -- present water quality problems. it is why we have a permit associated with the use of herbacides. >> cal trans does not have that permit yet. it is work that includes a herbicide plan to poison 67 acres of invasive blackberries along with three pages of approved chemicals. >> the project document require taz if cal trans considers herbicides it must consult with a mendocino board of supervisors. cal trans did not do that. >> in fact a few weeks ago the board of supervisors voted to oppose using herbicides on the project. the city council voted 4-1 against herbicides and local indian tribes oppose it too. cal trans should stick to a plan to remove the blackberries by hand or with machines. or just leave them and focus on removing other more harmful invasives. concerned citizens demanded that cal trans keep the chemicals out of the environmentally sensitive valley around willis. >> it was never suggested to herbicides. they are unknown. >> cal trans did not appear at the hearing because the issue was not actually on the agenda. but a spokesman sent us an e-mail saying in part we must use herbicides to meet our mitigation goals and time line. any herbicide application will follow all laws. they will apply for the proper permit, but the water board could block it. >> we have concerns but we have yet to see what cal trans ' proposal is to know the full extent of it. >> that was dan ashley reporting. cal trans is planning a public meeting on the herbicide issue and there will be 30 days for public comment, but no date has been announced. you will find a link to a cal trans site where the agency provided early de teals of the her -- early details of the herbicide plan. a phoenix man found himself stuck in a chimney after he was locked out by friends playing a joke on him. the man tried to get back into the home by going down the chimney. he was stuck halfway down. it took half an hour for firefighters to knockdown an outside wall and break open a hole for him to escape. he was taken to the hospital for evaluation. abc7 news meteorologist drew touma follows that. take it away. try to follow that. >> on to weather we go. live doppler 7hd we have a dry sweep around here right now. we will widen out the picture and show you what is happening across the lower 48. we have a cold front that is marching to the east through the great lakes and parts of the plains. around chicago it is 81 degrees and the front will spark strong storms even to saint luis and -- st. louis and toward nebraska. it is comfortable and humid. temperatures in the low to mid80s. pop up showers are possible and even around the four corners you have the monsoonal moisture. hit or miss showers. we go to 67 in denver. you notice lots of sunshine and the only exception is in the higher elevation and in the sierra where they could see pop up thundershowers once again. here in the bay area we will have the clouds and perhaps drizzle early in the morning giving way to afternoon sunshine. 80 in concord and 66 san francisco and 79 san jose. accu-weather seven-day forecast, the drizzle is possible tomorrow. tuesday the best chance
