Jet fuel shortage could ground firefighting aircraft during potentially ferocious wildfire season Share Updated: 3:33 PM CDT Jul 13, 2021 By KEITH RIDLER, Associated Press Jet fuel shortage could ground firefighting aircraft during potentially ferocious wildfire season Share Updated: 3:33 PM CDT Jul 13, 2021 Hide Transcript Show Transcript while jets are critical for the travel of people and goods around the world, they're not exactly eco friendly. In fact, the BBC reported that an economy class return flight from London to new york creates 0.73 tons of CO two per passenger and accounts for 12% of all CO two emissions. But now scientists have developed an iron based catalyst which they believe could someday allow us to use CO two pulled straight out of the sky to power our planes to make the CO two based fuel experts combined the new iron catalyst, hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide in the reaction chamber and pressure heated them. And in a single step, they were able to separate the carbon from the carbon dioxide molecules, which then attached to the hydrogen, turning simple CO two into jet fuel. It's not the first catalyst to convert CO two into usable fuel, but it is the first to use something inexpensive like iron to do so. Mhm. Mhm.
