Ice candles are seen lit on the shores of Lake Yamanaka in the village of Yamanakako, Yamanashi Prefecture, on Feb. 13, 2021. The 15th edition of the Lake Yamanaka Ice Candle Festival was organized by the Yamanakako Tourist Association. As a measure to prevent novel coronavirus infections, the festival was held without spectators and streamed online for the first time. Staff members started lighting 6,000 ice candles arranged at Yamanakako Communication Plaza Kirara with Mount Fuji in the background at 4 p.m., and launched fireworks just before 6 p.m. Youth members of an association of local inns also released about 100 LED sky lanterns. During this season, the "Diamond Fuji" phenomenon, in which the sun sets over the top of the mountain, and the festival have traditionally attracted many tourists around Lake Yamanaka. Diamond Fuji began to be seen in mid-October last year from the Panorama Dai viewing platform near Communication Plaza Kirara. It can be seen from points near the lake until around Feb. 25 before the local Diamond Fuji viewing area returns to Panorama Dai.
