Pirates seize ship
“The British steamer Tungchow, which was seized by Chinese pirates, arrived in Hong Kong today. A guard was killed and another wounded, but the rest of the crew and passengers, including 70 children, were not harmed. The children said the pirates were kind and let them have as many oranges as they wanted. One lad boasted that he had eaten 17. The pirates abandoned the vessel following the approach of a British warship.”
Hunter lightning
“Two trams, a school and a house were struck by lightning during a thunderstorm in the Newcastle district yesterday. No person was injured. The Tighe’s Hill Public School suffered the most. A chimney was struck and collapsed with some of the brick landing in the street. One of the trams struck was travelling along the Wallsend line. The other was on the Waratah line. The insulating system of each tram prevented damage except to the motors.”
