‘Hidden money’: $50m flows in secret political donations

The nation’s major political parties took in $50 million in donations from unknown sources last financial year, with new analysis showing 30 per cent of all income amounts to “hidden money”.
Using newly released Australian Electoral Commission data, the watchdog group, the Centre for Public Integrity, found that $1.2 billion in gifts and donations from unknown sources has been received since 1998-99.
“Reform is needed now so that the funding of the coming election is transparent,” says Centre for Public Integrity chairman Anthony Whealy.
