A bomb shattered the silence of Christmas morning in Nashville shortly after 6:30 a.m.
By then, residents and a handful of Nashville police officers had been listening to a chilling countdown for about 15-minutes, alerting residents to leave the area because of an impending explosion. In between warnings, speakers on the RV played the wistful 1964 song “Downtown” by Petula Clark.
The explosion shook Tennessean staff members out of bed. Some headed to the scene while others started collecting information and answering key questions online. Together the small band of reporters, photographers, producers and editors would begin providing essential information in those crucial early moments, setting the table for the urgent and in-depth reporting The Tennessean would provide to the community, nation and world in the coming days.
