Hilltop Mall situation grows worse as Macy's closes permanently

Richmond's Hilltop Mall, already a ghost town, is about to get even emptier.
Mayor Tom Butt announced Tuesday that Macy's will be closing permanently. It's part of a 45-store closure across the nation for the struggling department store chain.
Butt shared part of the letter the city and county received from Macy's, which indicated the store will permanently shutter sometime between March 14-27. Its 133 employees will be laid off, although the company said it would help transfer some employees to other Bay Area Macy's stores.
Hilltop's JC Penney and Sears store already closed in recent years, making Walmart their last remaining anchor tenant.
