The Illinois Eastern Community College Board of Trustees met Tuesday night at Olney Central College. Trustee Al Henager announced his retirement from the board on January 18th, and the board appointed Roger Browning to fill his seat on Tuesday. Browning will be seated in March and will serve until the 2023 election, at which time he may seek election to a two-year term. Browning ran for a seat in 2021 and missed election at that time by about 40 votes to Brady Waldrop. The Cisne Village Board met this week and approved a $1,000 donation to the Cisne Reunion, and it approved city workers to help the bank clear an area of Barth Park near the gazebo to be decorated for holidays. The board also approved covering the cost of three dumpsters for cleanup of property at 113 South Watkins Street. Edwards County Sheriff Darby Boewe has announced he will seek re-election to his post. He has been sheriff for nearly 14 years; Boewe says former Sheriff Scott Meserole resigned in 2008, and he was appointed to the office in May before winning a special election in November 2008. He has since won each election for the Republican Party. The primary election this year will be on June 28th. Residents will be able to seek vote-by-mail ballots between March 30th and June 23rd, and in-person early voting will begin on May 19th. Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield has become the latest group to come out in support of a potential Business District in the city. The endorsement came after a vote by the VPF Board and a day after the Greater Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce announced it stands behind the proposal. Some residents have shown concern over the potential increase, saying it will drive people out of Fairfield for shopping. Much of southeastern Illinois, including Wayne, Edwards, Wabash, Hamilton, and White counties, is under a wind advisory until 6 tonight. Winds will sit in the 15-25 mile-per-hour range, and gusts could hit 50 to blow around unsecured objects or small tree limbs. High-profile vehicles should use extra caution, especially on east/west roads. Wind advisories are issued when sustained winds are expected to reach at least 30 miles per hour for longer than an hour, or when gusts are anticipated to hit 40 or more for any duration. The IDPH reported eight new cases of COVID-19 in Wayne County yesterday and two in Edwards County. Wabash County added five cases, Richland County four, and Hamilton County zero. White County jumped by eight cases, Lawrence County by nine, and Clay County by 12. Jefferson County increased by 31 cases, and Marion County added 12. As a state, Illinois announced 3,323 new cases and 104 additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 3,007,987 cases and 32,176 deaths. The Southern Region had a seven-day positivity rate of 8.5 percent on the 13th, down from 8.9 percent on the 12th. River stages as of early this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 19.19 feet, above the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 7.02 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 13.04 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 7.07 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 14.18 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 11.93 feet.
