Government rejects calls for military intervention in Peru Government rejects calls for military intervention in Peru 9 de junio de 2021, 17:17Lima, Jun 9 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Peru spoke out today against messages from the extreme right that, given the imminent victory of the leftist candidate Pedro Castillo, call for a military coup to prevent it. The Ministry of Defense issued a statement to this effect 'in the face of the dissemination on social networks of calls for the intervention of the Armed Forces in electoral or political matters.' The text adds that the role of the uniformed men is national defense and that 'they are not deliberative and are subordinated to constitutional power, so any call to breach this duty is inappropriate for a democracy.'
