Gov. Kay Ivey’s prison lease plan faces key financing deadline today

Today is a key date in Gov. Kay Ivey’s plan to lease new men’s prisons that would be financed and built by private developers, a plan the governor and the Alabama Department of Corrections have worked on for more than two years.
Ivey signed leases for two new men’s prisons in February. The prisons would be built in Elmore and Escambia County. The leases say June 1 is the “financial close” date.
